Fewer touches than Lammens: Amorim must boldly bench 5/10 Man Utd favourite

Manchester United can count themselves lucky that their unbeaten run is still intact. The Red Devils secured a late point away to Tottenham Hotspur, drawing 2-2 in North London, after a largely uninspiring performance once again from Ruben Amorim’s team.

Last season, the Lilywhites were something of a bogey team for United, who lost to Spurs four times. However, when Bryan Mbeumo scored just past the half-hour mark, it looked like that run could be coming to an end.

It was a good goal too, with Amad swinging a cross in for the Cameroonian attacker to guide home with his head.

The Red Devils were passive for most of the game, happy for Spurs to dominate the ball. Eventually, they did buckle under the pressure. In the 83rd minute, Mathys Tel saw his strike take a deflection and fly past Senne Lammens after excellent back-to-goal play.

Eight minutes later, in the first of six added minutes, Richarlison got his head on Wilson Odobert’s shot to direct it home. United seemed dead and buried, but Matthijs de Ligt was the saviour, heading home Bruno Fernandes’ corner to secure a draw.

It was a lacklustre performance from Amorim’s side, with De Ligt a key man at the back.

De Ligt’s stats vs. Spurs

Dutch international De Ligt capped off a good week for him personally by getting on the scoresheet. He was also recalled to the Netherlands squad after a fantastic start to the season at Old Trafford.

His last-gasp header to earn a point for United was an impressive effort.

He managed to shake off his marker and ghosted towards the back post, rising unmarked to head past Guglielmo Vicario in the Spurs goal.

Defensively, the former Ajax star impressed. He was the player whose deflection sent Tel’s strike into the back of the net, but it is hard to blame him after good centre-forward play.

Aside from that, De Ligt made six clearances and three recoveries, mainly operating at right centre-back, having largely bullied the likes of Richarlison ahead of him.

The heroic late goal from the Dutchman, meanwhile, would have brought relief to United fans and players alike. That includes another starter, who struggled against Spurs.

The United star who struggled against Spurs

Despite the performance of De Ligt, United were disappointing against Thomas Frank’s side. It was a largely toothless performance going forward, with Amorim’s side managing just five shots in the entire game.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

One of those attacking players who struggled was Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian has shone this season as something of an Amorim favourite, but, operating as a number nine on Saturday, was largely anonymous.

He certainly had a tough day going up against Cristian Romero and Mickey van de Ven.

In fact, Cunha didn’t really manage to get himself into the game at all. The former Atletico Madrid star only managed 35 touches in the 72 minutes he played, less than Lammens’ 37.

He also had four touches in the Spurs box and won one out of seven ground duels.

Well, it was a performance which MEN writer Steven Railston also seemed to think left a little to be desired. He gave Cunha a 5/10 for his afternoon’s work, and said the 17-cap Brazil star was ‘not at his best’ at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It will certainly give Amorim something to think about. United’s next game sees them take on Everton, and with two more physically imposing centre-backs in Michael Keane and James Tarkowski, he might decide against starting Cunha against the Toffees.

There are other options if he decides to rotate the Red Devils’ number 10 out of the lineup. Benjamin Sesko is, of course, one player who could start, although he picked up an injury against Spurs. Joshua Zirkzee is another player Amorim could turn to, and his hold-up play could be important against the Toffees.

Whatever decision the United boss chooses, he will need his side to create more going forward. On another day, they could have easily been put to the sword in North London.

Alice Davidson-Richards powers chase as Surrey halt Hampshire

Winning run comes to an end despite fifties from Maia Bouchier and Freya Kemp

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay25-Jul-2025Alice Davidson-Richards produced a game-changing fifty as Surrey ended Hampshire’s winning streak in a rain-curtailed Metrobank Women’s One Day Cup clash in Guildford.Freya Kemp’s 58 and Maia Bouchier’s 51 gave Hampshire a platform for a big score, but wickets at regular intervals, including three for Phoebe Franklin, restricted the visitors to 278.Surrey initially struggled to build regular partnerships but Davidson-Richards capitalised on a lengthy rain delay and smashed 62 to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat for Surrey.Having been sent in to bat, Hampshire got off to a positive start as openers Bouchier and Rhianna Southby capitalised on some erratic bowling from the Surrey quicks before Southby chopped on for 27.Bouchier anchored Hampshire’s innings well as she marshalled her side past 100 but then mistimed a flick straight to midwicket to fall for 51 as the run rate slowed.Surrey were sharp in the field throughout, as Ryana MacDonald-Gay produced two diving stops before substitute fielder Alexa Stonehouse took a reflex catch at midwicket to dismiss Georgia Adams as Hampshire slumped to 131 for 4.Abi Norgrove joined Kemp to bring about a revival and the two increased the tempo, cruising beyond 200 with a blend of big hitting and well-placed strokes before Norgrove was dismissed for 40.Kemp breezed past 50 and rotated the strike effectively with Nancy Harman until she was run out by Alice Monaghan for 58 attempting to take two on the boundary rider’s throw. But a flurry of wickets prevented Hampshire from fully attacking during the death overs and Surrey restricted the visitors to 278 all out.As dark clouds loomed over Guildford, Hampshire used the conditions to dismiss Kira Chathli early on for a duck but Bryony Smith and Alice Capsey counterattacked to make the most of the powerplay. The pair raced to 46 for 1 after seven overs before a brief shower forced the players off. Immediately after the resumption, Smith was dismissed for 24, having driven Perry straight to cover.Surrey began to settle once more but Freya Davies returned to the Hampshire attack and took the crucial wicket of Capsey for 47 thanks to Bouchier’s juggling take at midwicket.Hampshire continued to turn the screw as Ava Lee and Perry dismissed Paige Scholfield and Grace Harris, leaving the hosts 123 for 5 after 21 overs.Davidson-Richards and Danni Wyatt-Hodge kept the run rate manageable as they put together a meaningful partnership to steer Surrey to the drinks break. The rain showers that had persisted throughout the innings finally got too heavy, forcing the players off with Surrey 19 runs behind the DLS par score. After a lengthy delay, Surrey were set a revised target of 63 off 29 balls and their hopes looked over when Wyatt-Hodge holed out to cover. But Davidson-Richards and Monaghan took up the mantle, smashing a barrage of boundaries to chase down the target with two balls to spare.

Walk-Off Wagers: MLB Best Bets Today (Trust Logan Webb, Keep Fading Yankees on Wednesday Night)

There are multiple doubleheaders in Major League Baseball on Wednesday, which means we can start betting on the action as early as 1:45 p.m. EST when the Kansas City Royals take on the St. Louis Cardinals.

With so many games on the slate, I’ve narrowed down my three favorite plays on July 10, including a mix of prop bets and outright picks.

Let’s break down today’s targets!

MLB Best Bets Today for Wednesday, July 10

  • San Francisco Giants Moneyline (-155) vs. Toronto Blue Jays
  • Corbin Burnes UNDER 6.5 Strikeouts (-115)
  • Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline (-112) vs. New York Yankees

San Francisco Giants Moneyline (-155) vs. Toronto Blue Jays

The San Francisco Giants have ace Logan Webb on the mound at home against the Toronto Blue Jays and Chris Bassitt on Wednesday night.

Webb is one of the best pitchers in baseball this season, posting a 3.09 ERA and 2.72 FIP through 19 starts. He’s also thrown at least six innings in 11 straight starts, a huge lift to a Giants team that has had some struggles in the bullpen (4.36 ERA) in 2024.

Bassitt (3.43 ERA) has been solid in 2024, but the Jays are just 7-11 in his 18 outings and have struggled overall on the road, going just 20-26.

I give Webb the edge here – especially at home where the Giants are 6-2 straight up when he pitches.

Corbin Burnes UNDER 6.5 Strikeouts (-115)

I don’t want to call this a fade of Corbin Burnes, as his body of work for the Baltimore Orioles this season has been extremely impressive.

However, he’s failed to clear 6.5 strikeouts in 15 of his 18 starts, only doing so against the Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners and Philadelphia Phillies. In fact, Burnes has recorded six or fewer punchouts in seven of his last eight starts – dating back to late May.

The Cubs haven’t been great at avoiding the punch out this season (8.97 per game), but even when Burnes has pitched deep into games, he hasn’t been a lock to clear this prop. In his last five starts where he pitched at least seven innings, he’s failed to hit the OVER every time.

I’m playing the percentages here and taking the UNDER since it’s hit  83.3 percent of the time in 2024.

Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline (-112) vs. New York Yankees

The New York Yankees cannot win a baseball game right now, losing to the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday to fall to 6-17 in their last 23 games.

Marcus Stroman gets the ball for the Yankees tonight, and he’s struggled as of late, posting a 5.74 ERA and 6.65 FIP in six starts since the beginning of June.

That’s not going to get it done against Zach Eflin (4.19 ERA, 3.76 FIP), who held the Yankees scoreless across six innings earlier this season.

The Rays are also an impressive 10-6 in Eflin’s outings in 2024. Until the Yankees prove they can turn things around, I’m fading them at a price like this.

Rangers: Positive Ibrox talks held with 4-3-3 manager to replace Martin

Glasgow Rangers have held positive Ibrox talks with a leading Gers manager target to replace Russell Martin.

Managers who could replace Martin at Rangers

Sunday’s 1-1 Scottish Premiership draw with Falkirk proved to be the last straw for Martin at Rangers, who was dismissed that evening.

Gers chairman Andrew Cavenagh and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe have since written an open letter to Ibrox supporters, telling fans that a ‘rigorous, thoughtful recruitment process is already underway’ to find a new manager, with the pair ‘treating it with the urgency it deserves’ and are ‘deeply involved’.

A number of targets have already been linked with a move to Glasgow, including former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl who is “appreciated by senior figures” at Ibrox.

Another candidate currently out of work is Sean Dyche. The former Everton and Burnley boss has been without a job since leaving Goodison Park, and he is thought to be very keen on moving to Glasgow.

In Europe, there have also been more names mentioned to come in and replace Martin. Dutch head coach Mark van Bommel is another “interested” in replacing Martin, whereas Spanish manager Quique Setien is also on the Gers’ radar after leaving Beijing Guoan.

A ‘fan favourite’ and one of Rangers’ top targets, though, is former Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard, and there has now been a positive development over a return to Glasgow for the former title winner.

Rangers hold positive talks with Steven Gerrard

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Rangers have now had ‘positive progress in talks with Gerrard’ over a reunion at Ibrox.

It was stated on Monday that discussions were set to continue and that negotiations are complex, however, the ball appears to be rolling in regards to a move back to Glasgow for the 45-year-old.

Gerrard, who plays an attacking 4-3-3 system, averaged 2.15 points per game during his 192 matches in charge of Rangers between 2018-2021, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2020.

His assistant from his time at Ibrox, Gary McAllister, was even asked about a return to Rangers with Gerrard on Monday, to which he said:

“We had a wonderful time there. We really enjoyed our time there. Steven did an amazing job to get that 55th title.

“He’s always going to be linked with Glasgow Rangers, he loved his time up there. You never know what can happen.”

Rangers look set to take their time when appointing their fourth manager of 2025 due to the current international break, but by the looks of things, a return to Ibrox for Gerrard is a real possibility.

Marcus Rashford set for key new role at Barcelona after impressive start as Hansi Flick plans tactical change in response to PSG and Sevilla defeats

Marcus Rashford is reportedly set for a key new role at Barcelona as Hansi Flick is determined to make a tactical change after defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla. Once written off and loaned out of Manchester United, the English forward has gone from Premier League exile to Barcelona’s next big hope. After being ditched by Ruben Amorim and sent packing to Aston Villa in January, his career looked in freefall. But fast forward a few months, a new boss and a new sense of purpose have changed everything.

  • Flick’s plan for Rashford after a double disaster

According to the German coach, furious with his team’s lack of intensity and pressing, has spent the international break dissecting every detail. Against PSG, Barca were bullied by the French champions’ power and precision. Whereas, against Sevilla, they were simply outworked. And his solution is bold: reinventing Rashford as Barcelona’s centre-forward.

Flick’s blueprint involves Rashford spearheading the attack, with Raphinha on the left, Lamine Yamal on the right, and Fermín Lopez just behind them. That trio, though, have all been nursing injuries, and their fitness will determine when the new system debuts. The manager is already eyeing Barcelona’s next fixtures as a testing ground. The first could be Girona on October 18 at Montjuic, followed by a crucial Champions League clash against Olympiacos on the 21st. If all goes well, the real test will come a week later: El Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu on October 26.

Rashford's chance to make it count as a No.9

Flick's plan to use Rashford as a No.9 has been brewing for a long time. During pre-season, Rashford looked like a man reborn, scoring in a 5-0 friendly demolition of Daegu FC and impressing Flick with his movement and aggression. In that match, he was told to lead the line in the second half after he replaced Lewandowski. The forward did not disappoint, and that has inspired Flick to experiment once more in the thick of the campaign.

"He can play at No.9 or No.11," said Flick. "We changed it because we had to be careful with Ferran. We wanted to see how he adapted to the position."

Rashford has always said his best work comes from the left flank, cutting inside onto his right foot; the same way he’s scored most of his career goals. But Flick sees something different: a powerful runner who can press defenders, stretch the backline, and finish with composure. Barcelona’s recent lack of pressing has cost them dearly, and the manager believes that with Rashford up front, the team can rediscover the ferocious energy that powered them to a domestic treble last season.

  • Deco drops transfer bombshell regarding a new No.9

The tactical shift also aligns with the club’s broader vision. Sporting director Deco has made it clear that Barcelona won’t chase a big-name striker to replace Robert Lewandowski, who turned 37 this year and still has a contract until 2026. With rumours linking Barca to Erling Haaland and Serhou Guirassy, Deco’s stance suggests Flick’s new approach is part of a long-term evolution rather than a stopgap fix.

“We shouldn’t be obsessed with signing a number 9,” he said. “Perhaps you can do without one. This isn’t the time to talk about signings. Ferran (Torres) can play as a 9. PSG won the Champions League without a penalty-area player. Talking about a ‘9’ is a bit of a mistake, although there are good players."

The Polish legend, who has alternated starts with Torres this season, is being eased out of a full-time role. Flick wants to preserve his experience but is ready to inject youth and pace into the front line. That’s where Rashford fits perfectly: a player who combines Premier League explosiveness with Champions League pedigree. If the experiment works, he could become the long-term heir to Lewandowski’s throne.

Rashford looking to shine in El Clasico

All eyes are now on Rashford’s adaptation. If he delivers against Girona and Olympiacos, he could lead the line at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid, a chance to silence doubters and announce himself as Barcelona’s new star striker. A few months ago, he was on the fringes. Now, he’s on the verge of becoming the man Hansi Flick builds Barcelona around. And if the experiment works, the Nou Camp faithful might soon have a new anthem to sing; not for Lewandowski, but for Rashford, the Englishman who came to Spain and found himself again.

Morris set for rare back-to-back Shield games as WA press for another final

Western Australia quick Lance Morris is set to be unleashed against New South Wales amid a complicated balancing act with his bowling load management as WA push to try and qualify for a fourth straight Sheffield Shield final.Meanwhile, Test offspinner Nathan Lyon will not play again this season for NSW as he continues to rest and rehab a hip complaint he managed through the tour of Sri Lanka. Lyon’s spin partner in Sri Lanka, Matthew Kuhnemann will return for Tasmania after being cleared of throwing following ICC testing while Usman Khawaja has also been named for Queensland.Related

  • Kuhnemann cleared of suspect bowling action by ICC

Morris has been named in WA’s 14-man squad alongside Cameron Bancroft who will return from the broken shoulder he suffered in the BBL to play his 100th Shield match against NSW at the WACA ground.Morris’ inclusion is the most noteworthy given he is contracted to Cricket Australia and they have been managing his playing schedule this summer. Morris, who turns 27 later this month, has played just three Shield matches this season, including WA’s most recent win against Queensland in Brisbane, but has been playing with a maximum overs restriction of 25 per game coming off a stress fracture last winter as well as a quad strain late in the pre-season.It is understood he was initially set to be rested from the match against NSW with a view to being made available for WA’s final home and away game against Victoria next week at the WACA ground. Such a schedule could have left him unavailable for the final as CA’s medical team are understandably very cautious about Morris playing back-to-back Shield games at the moment due to his extensive injury history, given he is a developing international prospect as one of the few bowlers in Australia capable of clocking speeds in excess of 150kph consistently.Morris is understood to be frustrated at being held back despite being in good shape having bowled well in the second innings at the Gabba after some rust in the first innings. Morris articulated his frustration earlier in the summer in an interview with ESPNCricinfo explaining that scans have shown a stress issue that is not causing him pain. WA have also had difficulty trying to manage his overs restrictions in games while trying to qualify for the Shield final. Morris has not bowled more than 25 overs in a match since November 2023 and has not played four Shield games in succession since late 2022.Morris’ case is a prime example of why CA has appointed Adam Griffith as the new national pace bowling coach to unify the approach to management of fast bowlers across national, state and franchise cricket. CA have also appointed current travelling Australia men’s team physio Nick Jones to a permanent Australia-based case manager role to coordinate and oversee the rehabilitation of injured players while a new team physio will be appointed to travel full-time with the team.Cameron Green is another player who will be managed by Jones as he continues his recovery from back surgery, but he is unlikely to play a Shield game before a County Championship stint with Gloucestershire.Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft collided when going for the same catch•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

Meanwhile, Bancroft is set to become the 13th WA player to play 100 Shield matches. He will return at the top of the order and will be fine to field in the slips but will be slow to return to throwing after breaking his right shoulder in a sickening collision with Sydney Thunder teammate Daniel Sams during the BBL.Australia’s semi-final exit from the Champions Trophy on Tuesday also opens the door for Cooper Connolly to potentially be available for WA’s next Shield clash with Victoria but it appears unlikely they will get Josh Inglis or Aaron Hardie back for either the last round of the season or a potential final given both have IPL contracts, with the IPL starting on March 21 just three days after the last Shield round of the season and five days before the Shield final.Elsewhere, Khawaja will return for Queensland to face Tasmania at Bellerive Oval in Hobart after resting from the loss to WA following his successful tour of Sri Lanka. Jack Clayton also returns to further bolster Queensland’s batting after missing the WA clash with a hamstring injury. Kuhnemann has been included in Tasmania’s squad as has left-hander Caleb Jewell who has not played Shield cricket since he was omitted from Tasmania’s first-choice side in November.Victoria have named exciting 18-year-old left-hander Oliver Peake in their 13-man squad to face Shield leaders South Australia at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. Peake is in-line to make his first-class debut having been a development tourist with Australia’s Test squad in Sri Lanka last month. Peake made 99 in Victoria’s most recent second XI match against WA and has been included alongside former NSW batter Blake Macdonald who made twin centuries in the same game. Peter Handscomb will captain Victoria as Will Sutherland has been rested. The Shield’s leading wicket-taker Nathan McAndrew has been withdrawn on match eve to manage his workload with Henry Thornton called in fresh off starring in South Australia’s Dean Jones Trophy win last weekend.South Australia can lock up a home Shield final with a win over Victoria with Adelaide Oval still an outside chance to host the game in between Australia Football League fixtures if the drop-in pitches can be transplanted back into the venue without too much disruption after being removed for the start of the football season following the One-Day final.Sheffield Shield squadsWestern Australia: Sam Whiteman (c), Cameron Bancroft, Hilton Cartwright, Brody Couch, Keaton Critchell, Joel Curtis, Sam Fanning, Cameron Gannon, Jayden Goodwin, Lance Morris, Joel Paris, Corey Rocchiccioli, Charlie Stobo, Ashton TurnerNew South Wales: Jackson Bird, Ollie Davies, Jack Edwards (c), Matt Gilkes, Chris Green, Ryan Hadley, Liam Hatcher, Hanno Jacobs, Sam Konstas, Nic Maddinson, Kurtis Patterson, Josh Philippe, Lachlan ShawVictoria: Peter Handscomb (c), Scott Boland, Xavier Crone, Harry Dixon, Sam Elliott, Sam Harper, Marcus Harris, Campbell Kellaway, Blake Macdonald, Todd Murphy, Fergus O’Neill, Oliver Peake, Mitch PerrySouth Australia: Jordan Buckingham, Brendan Doggett, Henry Hunt, Jake Lehmann, Ben Manenti, Connor McInerney, Nathan McSweeney (c), Harry Nielsen, Lloyd Pope, Jason Sangha, Liam Scott, Henry ThorntonTasmania: Jordan Silk (c), Gabe Bell, Jake Doran, Kieran Elliott, Brad Hope, Caleb Jewell, Matt Kuhnemann, Riley Meredith, Aidan O’Connor, Mitch Owen, Nivethan Radhakrishnan, Tim Ward, Jake Weatherald, Beau WebsterQueensland: Mitchell Swepson (c), Xavier Bartlett, Jack Clayton, Lachlan Hearne, Usman Khawaja, Angus Lovell, Ben McDermott, Michael Neser, Jimmy Pierson, Matthew Renshaw, Mark Steketee, Callum Vidler, Jack Wildermuth

Clear-minded Patidar leads MP to SMAT final with his sixes

Having been retained by RCB for IPL 2025, the MP captain hopes to carry his confidence into his batting and leadership

Rajat Patidar scored a match-winning 66* off 29 balls in the semi-final against Delhi•PTI

Madhya Pradesh (MP) have made it to their first Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) final since 2010-11, and their captain Rajat Patidar has been key to their success this season. Ahead of the final against Mumbai on December 15, he has scored 347 runs, including four half-centuries, and batted at an impactful strike rate of 182.63.Patidar has continued from where he had left off in the IPL this year, where he was Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) third-highest run-getter with 395 runs at a strike rate of 177.13. It is his six-hitting ability which has helped him gallop at that pace. While at the IPL he smacked 33 sixes in 13 innings, Patidar has 21 sixes in the SMAT across eight innings.”I’m just trying to back my strength in the areas where I’m going to hit,” Patidar said after taking MP to victory against Delhi in the semi-final on Friday, when he cracked 66 not out off just 29 balls. “I was hitting long from last year, [and] last-to-last year. So I’m just trying to find the same pattern that I was playing [with] in IPL, and how I have to go about it.”Related

Patidar whirlwind blows Delhi away, MP in final

Patidar arrived to bat at a troublesome 46 for 3 in MP’s chase of 147 against Delhi, and he got going in no time despite the situation. Facing pace bowler Himanshu Chauhan, he slashed his fifth ball for four past point, before dispatching Chauhan for six over deep square leg to take 14 runs from the over. The sixes kept flowing off Patidar’s bat – he thumped six of them in total – with heaves over midwicket and long-on, and the pull over square leg earning him the big hits.”I try to put my impact on the opposition for my team,” he said on his consistency. “I’ve never paid attention to getting the big scores. My mantra is to play one ball at a time. So I try to do that. I’ve never thought that I’ll get a big score. I focus on what I can do.”Even against Saurashtra in the quarter-final, Patidar had walked out in a tricky situation in a bigger chase, but he had his say in the game. MP’s required run rate touched 10.14 an over with seven overs to go in their pursuit of 174, and he smashed 28 off 18 balls to help wrap up the chase with four deliveries remaining.RCB’s decision to retain Patidar for INR 11 crore for IPL 2025 has been vindicated by his performances in the SMAT. He feels RCB’s decision has given him “a lot of confidence”, and he “will be happy” if the opportunity to lead his IPL team arose in the future.”I’ve learned much. I’ve enjoyed learning more tactically because I love seeing the players, and anticipate what they can do,” he said of his captaincy stint with MP. “It’s a great time [which] I spend with my coach Chandrakant Pandit about captaincy. So, yeah, I am learning a lot.”MP face Mumbai in the final at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, a team they had beaten by six wickets in the Ranji Trophy 2021-22 final at the same ground. Patidar had scored 122 in that win, and he believes that the victory from two years ago will boost his side.
