Sai Sudharsan says GT didn't 'react well' to Suryavanshi-Jaiswal onslaught

It was the first ball of the second over in Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) chase against Gujarat Titans (GT). Yashasvi Jaiswal tried to pull Ishant Sharma, top-edged it, and sent it swirling towards point. There was a fielder closer to the ball, but Jos Buttler called for it, ran after it, and spilled it.”We could have and we should have taken that catch, that would have made a big difference,” B Sai Sudharsan said after the game, while adding that it was early on in the game, and “we can’t be so harsh”. As it turned out, Jaiswal made 31 in 16 balls in the powerplay and his 14-year-old opening partner Vaibhav Suryavanshi 52 in 20. RR got to 87 after six overs. The two ended up adding 166 in 11.5 overs, Suryavanshi breaking records on his way to a 38-ball 101 and Jaiswal, very much the support act, finishing unbeaten on 70 from 40 balls. The win came with 25 balls in hand despite the target being 210.”When we finished [batting], we felt it was par or ten runs over par, is what our feeling was. But the way they started and batted showed us that we were wrong,” Sai Sudharsan, who scored 39 in 30 balls to take the Orange Cap back from Virat Kohli, said.Related

But it was not just about the batting. Sai Sudharsan felt the bowlers could have done better.”No credit taken [away] from Vaibhav, the way he batted was tremendous and fantastic to watch, [even though we were] fielding,” he said. “But at the same time, we could have reacted well. The way they started the powerplay was brilliant, but we could have reacted well and had better plans.”Maybe the lengths, and we could have been aware of the wicket, how it reacted to the ball, which they bowled in the first innings. Maybe we could have taken cues from that and executed that. Maybe we could have gone wider, we could have not bowled into his arc, maybe we could have done that and things would have been different.”

Why are GT hiding Sai Kishore away?

Not for the first time, R Sai Kishore was given just one over in the game since the opposition had left-hand batters in the middle for the longest time. Sai Kishore remains their second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 12 wickets, but, like against Delhi Capitals (DC) not long ago, he bowled just one over since left-hand batters were in front of him.5:32

Aaron: Sai Sudharsan ‘definitely’ in if there’s vacancy in India’s T20I side

“Sai Kishore came on very late,” Varun Aaron said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. Sai Kishore’s only over was the 15th of the chase, after Suryavanshi and Nitish Rana had been dismissed. “Yeah, there were two lefties batting, but Sai Kishore can bowl really well to lefties as well. And anyway the guys were going for 25-30 runs [per over]. Somebody who has been performing well, who has the confidence… and Sai Kishore is somebody who likes the challenge.”Ian Bishop was in agreement. “They have been doing this to Sai Kishore the last three or four games,” he said. “That’s what worries me. Are you saying to Sai Kishore that he can only bowl when right-handers are batting?”GT have, however, done most things right this IPL 2025 season and, despite the defeat, are at No. 3 with 12 points from nine games and well-placed to make the playoffs. Their next game is on Friday, at home against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Significant Man City contract claim emerges with new deal now close

One Manchester City player is now reportedly on the verge of signing a new deal at the club, following a fresh claim from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Guardiola delighted with Foden's resurgence

Pep Guardiola’s side host Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, acting as a good chance to pick up three more points.

One player who is back in form for City is Phil Foden, having scored in the recent wins over Manchester United and Huddersfield Town, and Guardiola is clearly happy with what he is seeing from the Englishman.

“Phil playing behind the striker is a real threat. We would have liked to score a second goal and make the substitutions before for Nico O’Reilly and Phil because they played a tough game against Arsenal three days ago. But they are young. They have good vitamins during the days, good food, good protein and yeah, now come back to Manchester to prepare [for Burnley].

“We have seen already Phil in a few games when the team play better. When every player makes his potential – but it’s not just today – the games against Arsenal, United and Napoli he was really good.”

Foden is a huge player for City moving forward, and now a new update suggests that another attacker could be committing his future to the club.

Big Man City contract claim emerges

Taking to X, Romano claimed that Manchester City winger Savinho is set to sign a contract extension at the Etihad, with an agreement reached.

While Savinho hasn’t necessarily hit the heights many expected of him when he joined City last year, this still has to be considered exciting news, given his long-term potential as a player.

It is easy to forget that the Brazilian is still only 21 years of age, and Guardiola has spoken of his admiration over the past 12 months, clearly rating him highly.

“We’re a way from what we have to be as a team, but Savinho made an incredible performance again like he did against Everton. He’s a guy who can play on both sides, today he finally scored a goal. He has an incredible ability and quality he’s proven in that period.”

The aim now for Savinho is to find more consistency and end product in his game, having only scored four goals in 52 appearances for City, but that should come with age.

RCB look to boost top-two chances in Lucknow home game

The big picture: RCB hope to get some cricket

On May 7, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) rolled into Lucknow brimming with the confidence of a rare double over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and hungry to strengthen their chances of a top-two finish. But just hours prior to their scheduled fixture against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), they were informed that IPL 2025 was being temporarily suspended. It has been more than two weeks since then and RCB are still searching for a game of cricket. The in-between period had seen players head home only to quickly dash back (except for Josh Hazlewood who is nursing a shoulder niggle but is expected to return soon), even as Bengaluru has seen relentless rain.Their home fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) that should have restarted the season last Saturday was abandoned without a ball bowled. And for three full days after that, RCB were left wondering if the Friday fixture would suffer a similar fate.Related

  • RCB bring in Muzarabani as Ngidi's temporary replacement

  • Seifert named as Bethell's temporary replacement at RCB

Just as all that bottled-up intensity began to find refuge at pickleball and badminton, RCB were informed of another late move: head to Lucknow, again. First for a “home” fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before rounding off their league phase with an “away” fixture at the same venue. RCB shouldn’t mind that, really – they have a flawless away record this season. The only difference from when RCB last came to Lucknow is that they have one more point in the kitty that has guaranteed a playoffs spot – their fifth in the last six seasons. But they are trying to scale peaks they haven’t since 2016 – a top-two spot. For that, it could yet be possible that RCB will need to win both of their remaining games and hope for other results to go their way. They will have the advantage of knowing what they should do. Ironically, even this season, the calculators continue to torment them.SRH haven’t had a lot of cricket themselves. They utilised the break, thanks to the scheduling prior to the tournament’s suspension, to dash off to the Maldives for rejuvenation. They had barely regrouped when asked to disband. Upon resumption, they put together a complete game to see off LSG three nights ago. While SRH are already eliminated from the playoffs race, they have two more games to aim for a mid-table finish and try the combinations that could lay the foundation for 2026.2:25

Form guide

Royal Challengers Bengaluru WWWWL
Sunrisers Hyderabad WLWLL

In the spotlight: Rajat Patidar and Travis Head

Rajat Patidar’s form had dipped significantly before the IPL took a pause, as he averaged just 10.6 in his last five innings, compared to 37.2 in his first five games. Heading to Lucknow, Patidar can take solace in the fact that his away form has been far more promising than his form in Bengaluru, where he has averaged just 14.4 at a strike rate of 101. Both his half-centuries have come on the road, where his strike rate is 169. While a hand injury had only added to his growing concerns, the extended break has allowed him time to recover. It’s been a frustrating season for Travis Head, whose average has dropped from 40.5 in 2024 to 28.1 this year. The once-feared opening pair of Head and Abhishek Sharma, dubbed Travishek, hasn’t had the same impact, with their average falling from 49.4 to 36.5. Apart from a 171-run stand in a chase against Punjab Kings (PBKS), they have struggled to make a mark. Now fully recovered from Covid, can Head rejoin Abhishek to deliver a parting gift for SRH fans in the remaining games?4:12

What went wrong for Ishan Kishan at SRH?

Team news and probable XII

Hazlewood is yet to return, but all other squad members are available. RCB will have a decision to make on their No. 3 in the wake of Devdutt Padikkal’s injury. Indications are it will be the experienced Mayank Agarwal.Royal Challengers Bengaluru (probable): 1 Phil Salt, 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Mayank Agarwal, 4 Rajat Patidar (capt), 5 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 6 Romario Shepherd, 7 Tim David, 8 Krunal Pandya, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Yash Dayal, 11 Lungi Ngidi, 12 Suyash SharmaHead has been declared fit and is likely to slot back into the XII. Jaydev Unadkat, who missed the previous game, has also rejoined the squad.Sunrisers Hyderabad (probable): 1 Travis Head, 2 Abhishek Sharma, 3 Ishan Kishan (wk), 4 Nitish Reddy, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 Aniket Verma, 7 Abhinav Manohar, 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Harsh Dubey, 11 Eshan Malinga, 12 Jaydev Unadkat

The big question

Pitch and conditions

The LSG-SRH game three nights ago was played on a black-soil deck. Friday’s fixture will be played on a red-soil pitch at RCB’s preference, as they are the home team. That means more bounce and carry, and a possibility of sharp turn. RCB also have the advantage of significant intel on the venue, with Andy Flower having coached LSG for two seasons, and Krunal Pandya having played under him there.

Stats and trivia

  • Virat Kohli is one away from surpassing David Warner (62) for the most half-centuries in IPL history. Kohli comes in on the back of four consecutive 50-plus scores.
  • RCB’s economy of 10.2 is the second-best among all teams in the death overs.
  • Since starting the season with a century, Ishan Kishan has averaged just 13.9 and crossed 30 only twice in ten games.
  • SRH have taken the least wickets by a spin unit (ten) while also having the highest economy (10) for this variety of bowling.
  • Tim David’s 11 sixes are the most by a batter between overs 17-20 this season. It mirrors RCB’s death-overs scoring, which is the highest (12.4) for any team.

Quotes

“We’ve got a good record away, we’ve been able to flex for the away conditions really well and I am backing our players to do that again tomorrow. So we’re okay playing here at this point.”

Cost £1.3m, sold for 1823% more: Leeds struck gold selling their own Wilson

Leeds United supporters have not been accustomed to goal-filled matches involving their beloved side since promotion to the Premier League.

Indeed, Daniel Farke’s Whites are yet to score a goal from open play in league action, with their only strike to date being Lukas Nmecha’s penalty, which won a tight affair versus Everton.

Since then, it’s been many a spurned opportunity from the West Yorkshire outfit, with the free transfer addition of Dominic Calvert-Lewin not even boosting their early-season output.

Leeds might not be so frustrated in this department right now if they had managed to win a deal for Harry Wilson on deadline day, with the Welshman never arriving at Elland Road in the end from Fulham, despite serious efforts to bring him in at the final hour.

Why Leeds failed to sign Harry Wilson

Ultimately, the top-flight newcomers left themselves with too much to do as the clock ticked down, with Fulham deciding last-minute to keep their entertaining attacker around.

Why? Well, the story is a source of frustration as far as Leeds are concerned. They initially met Fulham’s quoted asking price a few days before deadline, but with the Cottagers focused on incomings, the Londoners ended up wanting to re-negotiate a move on the final day of the window.

The Whites did return with an improved offer and while that bid was accepted, resulting in a deal sheet being submitted to get the move signed off, Fulham ultimately decided that they did not want to sell the player, communicating to the hierarchy at Elland Road that a deal was off just minutes before the 7pm deadline.

It was a bitter blow for the Yorkshire side, but it’s understandable that Marco Silva’s men wanted to keep him, knowing full well what he’s capable of at the peak of his powers.

Indeed, the “incredible” number eight – as he was once lauded by Jurgen Klopp – is capable of stunning moments like the one above, culminating in Wilson tallying up 26 goal contributions in total for Fulham in the Premier League.

With a further 30 goal contributions coming his way in the Championship for Silva’s men, Leeds might well have thought they’d struck gold by tempting Wilson to Elland Road, with the Wrexham-born forward also offering depth down either the left or right wing for Farke, amid some gaps in the German’s squad.

Ipswich Town'sLeifDavisin action with Fulham's Harry Wilson

However, it just wasn’t to be, as Farke now has to rely on the likes of Wilfried Gnonto and Daniel James until January.

Leeds did once have a tantalising winger in a similar mould to Wilson, though.

Leeds struck gold with their original Harry Wilson

Farke should hopefully have enough at his disposal to get the goals eventually flowing, with Calvert-Lewin boasting 57 Premier League goals at Everton when performing at full capacity.

He would love to have Crysencio Summerville back for selection if he could; however, notably having managed to get the very best out of the electric Dutchman during his first up-and-down season at the helm.

Arguably, his previous dynamite output in the Championship for Leeds puts him on the same pedestal Wilson once found himself on at Fulham in the second tier.

A bumper 28-goal contributions fell into his lap come the end of a breakout 2023/24 season, which somehow saw the Whites slip up in their bid to return to the Premier League in a jittery playoff final.

Still, Summerville would find his own avenue up to the top-flight with West Ham United, as Leeds were powerless to a £25m bid coming their way, in the wake of promotion failing to be secured.

Leeds could let themselves be eaten up with regret here, considering Summerville is now strutting his stuff in London – not too far away from Wilson’s Fulham – with two assists next to his name already this campaign.

But, the table above reinforces the idea that Leeds struck gold on the Feyenoord-born attacker when they did, with Summerville purchased for just £1.3m four years ago.

Taking into account the £25m he was sold for, that is a wild 1823% increase between the two prices, with Leeds then putting their riches to good use to construct a promotion-winning team.

While they may be stunted in the here and now with no Summerville-style figure, with the Dutchman also adaptable like Wilson to play down either flank, time is still on Leeds’ side to beat the drop.

The likes of Noah Okafor, who did end up through the door this summer, could well turn into Leeds’ new, impactful Summerville-like presence down the line, with all hope not lost just yet at Elland Road.

Leeds already preparing January offer to sign £40m Calvert-Lewin upgrade

Leeds United are already preparing a formal offer to sign a star who would replace Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Washington Spirit star Trinity Rodman exits game with knee injury, the same day she was called into Emma Hayes' latest USWNT camp

Trinity Rodman was injured during the Washington Spirit's CONCACAF W Champions Cup group stage win over Monterrey Wednesday night and had to be removed from the game. The USWNT star couldn't put any weight on her right leg as she departed. Rodman was in distress after attempting a tackle, and left the field on crutches at half time.

A tense moment

Rodman took an awkward step onto her right leg while attempting to challenge an opponent shortly before half time. She was able to walk off the pitch with support, but was in tears on the bench. She limped off the pitch on crutches a bag of ice on her knee at the break.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesInjury problems of late

The injury comes at an unfortunate time for Rodman, who has struggled with a litany of back problems of late. She missed nearly 4 months of action after the back injury, and was just starting to rediscover her best. The gold medal-winning forward has tallied seven goal contributions in an injury-shortened campaign. She was named to the 2024 NWSL best XI.

'Had to play without her for more than a year'

Emma Hayes will likely be concerned. The USWNT coach called Rodman into her squad for the first time since April, as they face Portugal and New Zealand over the next two weeks.

The former Chelsea boss backed her star winger to make an impact in her return, dubbing her "one of the best players in the world" in a news conference Wednesday afternoon after the roster announcement. She was expected to feature as the USWNT gear up for 2027 World Cup qualification.

It was an otherwise successful evening for Washington, who are currently second in the NWSL standings. They  strolled to a 4-0 win over Monterrey, and are currently top of Group B after four matches.

But Knott followed up scores of 58 against Durham and 64 versus Somerset to crash a classy 82, with Georgia Adams picking up 68 to keep Hampshire top of the table heading into the Vitality Blast break.Warwickshire chose to bat first, less than 24 hours after nine of the players had featured in the Vitality T20 County Cup victory in Devon. The change of format appeared to frazzle the top-order on a slow pitch as they slumped to 38 for 4 inside the first 10 over, which continued to 93 for 6.Bex Tyson took the mantle of the main left-arm spinner, with Linsey Smith on England duty, and immediately struck as she pinned Meg Austin with her first delivery. At the other end, Freya Davies accounted for Sterre Kalis and Davina Perrin in back-to-back overs – Yorkshire loanee Kalis had her stump flattened while teenager Perrin steered to point.Mary Taylor entered the attack and bowled Katie George in her first over, before spin resumed its hold with wicketkeeper Rhianna Southby catching Bethan Ellis and Nat Wraith off Adams and Knott.Hampshire may well have be considering a short chase and an afternoon off, but Freeborn had other ideas. She manipulated the field to prevent her side from being routed, while striking semi-regular boundaries square of the wicket to build the foundations of a strong total.Charis Pavely gave her energetic support with the duo putting on 97 in good time, with Freeborn reaching her second fifty of the season in 84 deliveries.Pavely followed her in 70 balls as an above-par score looked on the cards, and when Pavely was stumped for 55, Georgia Davis took over. The pair put on an unbroken 53, including 40 off the last three overs, but they couldn’t contrive to take Freeborn – who swept strongly in the second half of her innings – to three figures. However, 243 for 7 was significantly competitive after Hampshire had allowed things to drift.Hannah Rainey hadn’t had to bat on her One-Day Cup debut but with the new ball, she began with a maiden.Ella McCaughan and Maia Bouchier cracked seven boundaries between them, but both fell to Davis when set. Bouchier flicked to square leg, while McCaughan was lbw. But Knott and Adams avoided a similar top-order slip to Warwickshire earlier, with both oozing class and timing.Australian Knott’s scoring was dominated by boundaries, eight of them in her 46-ball half-century. Knott gave Davis her third wicket when she top-edged a sweep on 82, before Southby chopped a pull onto her own stumps.Adams fell for 68 when she was leg-before to Hannah Baker, with Abi Norgrove slicing to point as Hampshire wobbled to 205 for 6 – still 38 runs short. In the reverse fixture at Edgbaston, the two teams tied, and they flirted with a similar outcome, especially when Nancy Harman was bowled with eight needed off 16 balls. But having taken it to the final over, Taylor secured the three-wicket victory with four balls to spare.
