Surrey 153 for 4 (Pope 48*, Abbas 2-39) trail Hampshire 254 (Brown 95, Lawes 4-58) by 101 runsIf you’re plugged into the internet, you have probably already come across this story told by Cameron Ponsonby on the latest edition of the If not, here we go.Last weekend, Manchester City were playing away to Southampton in the Premier League. As many teams do when preparing for a fixture at St Mary’s, they stayed at the Hilton hotel adjoining the Ageas Bowl. A request was put in for their manager, Pep Guardiola, to take up residence in one of the plusher suites. Usually, that’s no problem. But during this period when the football and cricket seasons overlap, there was. No can do, came the response – that’s Mohammad Abbas’ suite. It’s a hell of a story – County Championship over the Premier League? You love to see it – made all the better by confirmation from a couple of sources. One privately to ESPNcricinfo was accompanied by a fascinating question to wrestle with: which is more intimidating to play against, tiki-taka or the wobble seam? Surrey certainly had their hands full with the latter on Friday, as Abbas found the edges of Dom Sibley and then Rory Burns within 17 overs of a Friday punctuated by rain delays. The opening pair had resumed their stand on 37 before it was broken on 44.

Five minutes into the first rain delay at 11:30am, Keith Barker offered his confirmation of the Abbas-Pep anecdote, commenting “This is 100% true” under the clip on Instagram. He then shared the post on his own feed with the words “True Story”.There is a lot to unpack from this, but let’s focus on the guts of it. A man who overcame the Galacticos of Real Madrid and the establishment of Manchester United, a fervent advocate of Catalan independence from Spain no less, couldn’t shift a bloke from their bed because he nibbles the ball both ways.Rightly so, from Hampshire’s point of view. Such loyalty to a seamer has already been repaid in spades, with 100 wickets at an average of 16.59 coming into this fixture. And a day after his side had stuttered to 254 in their first innings, his endeavour throughout 13 overs on day two made it look like a hundred more.Just as it has not been just Abbas these last two years, it wasn’t solely the currently erstwhile Pakistan international here. Indeed Hampshire’s two highest wicket-takers last summer were Barker (52) and Kyle Abbott (58), and they were typically relentless with the ball.Fresh from a valiant 58, Barker was unlucky not to bag what would have been a 500th career dismissal. A close-looking lbw appeal against Burns was turned down when the Surrey captain was on 26, before Ollie Pope edged between James Vince (first slip) and Liam Dawson (second) with just 4 to his name.Abbott would have to wait until five overs before bad light brought an end to play at 5:36pm – Jordan Clark trapped in front – while James Fuller nicked off Ryan Patel just as the left-hander was getting comfortable. However, Pope’s continued presence on 48 not out compounds the early miss off Barker.Related

England’s incumbent No.3 played to type. He jumped forward into the occasional defensive shot, then picked off runs at will, particularly early on. His third boundary took him to a sprightly 21 from 27 deliveries and was perhaps the shot of the match so far: a gorgeously caressed late cut that took Abbas for the third of the four boundaries conceded from his 21 overs so far.Though he did slow down, the game seemed to move along quicker during his time at the crease, which is particularly useful when almost 47 overs were lost due to the weather. So far, 109 runs have been added while the 25-year-old has occupied one end, at a rate of just over 3.5 an over. With Jamie Smith alongside him, they will aim to chip away the first-innings arrears of 101 that remain at a good enough pace when they return on Saturday. Smith, in particular, will be keen to show he is in step with the nu-wave England Test way of putting time back into matches by embracing positivity. Surrey certainly could do with that approach after last week’s stalemate with Lancashire, though both Pope and Smith are capable of moving forward without rushing. We are probably still too early in this match for anyone to be considering pressing the accelerator. And moreover, these are two bowling attacks that rarely, if ever, let batters get away from them. Even someone as proactive as Pope.At 5:25pm, we got a snapshot of the main battle in the offing on day three. Abbas went wide of the crease, angled one in and nipped it away, squaring up Pope, who was on 39 at the time. The outside edge was narrowly missed, knowing glances were passed back and forth. Admiration sent one way, frustration the other.Pope sauntered off, first to do some gardening and then, a few overs later, to the dressing room and home. A sound night’s sleep awaits, this one at Abbas’ expense. Not even Guardiola could manage that.

Johnson stars with seven to keep Queensland's lead in check

Exciting left-arm quick Spencer Johnson took a stunning career-best 7 for 49 while Queensland captain Jimmy Peirson has come to the rescue for the second time in a week as his side recovered to collect a slim 18-run first-innings lead over South Australia at the Gabba.Peirson earned player of the match honours with a century last week against New South Wales, and this time a counter-attacking 90 helped Queensland reach 290 in response to South Australia’s 272. The skipper’s innings was even more impressive in the face of Johnson’s exceptional performance. In just his second first-class outing he scythed through some of his Brisbane Heat BBL team-mates to finish with seven wickets having taking 6 for 87 on Sheffield Shield debut a fortnight ago against Victoria.South Australia survived four tricky overs late in the day to reach 8 for 0.Peirson came to the crease with the Bulls struggling at 99 for 5, but his 150-ball 90 featuring 11 boundaries – along with contributions from Max Byrant and Michael Neser – helped revive the home side despite Johnson taking seven of the final eight wickets for the innings. After a very slow first session, a steady flow of runs saw Queensland earn enough batting bonus points to edge into second on the table in the event both they and Victoria earn victories in this round.South Australia must win in Brisbane to have any chance of reaching the Shield final. South Australia’s attack was without Wes Agar, with the Shield’s leading wicket-taker rested ahead of next week’s One-Day Cup final.

Kathryn Bryce blazes a trail to victory over Storm

Finalists The Blaze secure seven-wicket win on back of her unbeaten fifty, plus two wickets

ECB Reporters Network07-Jun-2023Kathryn Bryce scored a superbly-judged unbeaten half-century to propel Charlotte Edwards Cup finalists The Blaze to a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Western Storm at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens.Chasing 135 to win, The Blaze achieved their target with eight balls to spare thanks to an innings of 54 not out from 35 balls by Bryce, who shared in stands of 66 and 41 with Georgie Boyce and Marie Kelly for the third and fourth wickets respectively.Put in to bat, Storm slumped to 49 for 4 and were indebted to Emma Corney, who top-scored with 23 and shared in a restorative stand of 42 for the fifth wicket with Sophie Luff, while Alex Griffiths clubbed 19 not out at the death. But Blaze were always in control, Grace Ballinger taking 2 for 24 with the new ball and Kathryn Bryce weighing in with 2 for 17, including the key wicket of Luff, as Storm were restricted to 134 for 7.Having already qualified for Saturday’s final at New Road, Worcester, group winners Blaze ensured they finished with a 100 percent winning record, extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 matches in 2023. A team in transition, Storm won three of their seven fixtures to claim fifth place.Even without star players Kirstie Gordon, Tammy Beaumont, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sarah Glenn, who were involved in England’s two-day training match ahead of the women’s Ashes, Blaze proved too strong for a Storm side that were missing Heather Knight, Dani Gibson and Lauren Filer.Ballinger made a breakthrough in the first over, bowling Nat Wraith for four with her second delivery from the River End, after which she and Nadine de Klerk sent down 10 consecutive dot balls to apply immediate pressure.Orla Prendergast had registered a superb hundred on debut in her last appearance at Sophia Gardens in April, but managed just 19 from 14 balls on this occasion as Storm slipped to 35 for 2 in the fifth over. The Ireland international plundered three consecutive fours at the expense of Ballinger, who then exacted a swift revenge by pinning Prendergast lbw next ball.Although the powerplay yielded 44 runs, Storm continued to lose wickets and Niamh Holland, promoted to open the batting in the absence of Gibson, was run out by de Klerk, having contributed a 23-ball 21. Fran Wilson went in the very next over with the score on 49, driving at a length ball from Sophie Munro and finding Kathryn Bryce at extra cover.Charged with the task of rebuilding, Luff and Corney played spinners Josie Groves and Lucy Higham well, combining deft placement and quick running between the wickets to keep the scoreboard ticking over during the middle overs.Corney enjoyed a large slice of good fortune when, having scored seven, she was dropped by Beth Harmer at mid-on off the bowling of Groves with the score on 76. But there was no let-off when Luff stepped in front of a straight ball from Kathryn Bryce and was adjudged lbw in the 15th over. Storm’s influential captain had raised 19 from 18 balls and helped add 42 runs in 6.5 overs for the fifth wicket, but her dismissal represented a body blow to the home side, who were 91 for 5 in the 15th over.Previously deployed in the role of chief support, Corney now picked up the cudgels, driving fluently to register her highest score in the competition, advancing to 23 from 32 balls before being bowled by the returning Kathryn Bryce as Blaze sought to reimpose their earlier dominance. Sophia Smale was bowled by de Klerk for 10 in the penultimate over, but Griffiths was able to score an unbeaten 19 at a run-a-ball to haul Storm to respectability.Prepared to take a risk at every opportunity, Sarah Bryce and Beth Harmer rode their luck to provide the Blaze reply with early momentum, the opening pair adding 28 in 4.2 overs. But Harmer then scooped off spinner Claire Nicholas to short fine leg and departed for 12 and Smale had Bryce held at mid-off for 15 in the next over to reduce the visitors to 30 for 2.Unperturbed by that double setback, Kathryn Bryce and Boyce initially went about their business in workmanlike fashion, finding the gaps and running hard to keep the rate down. When Bryce hoisted Smale over mid-wicket for the first six of the match and then drove her next ball through the covers for four, Blaze were 69 for 2 at the halfway point of their innings, requiring a further 66 at 6.6 an over with plenty of wickets in hand.Becoming ever-more expansive, Bryce then helped herself to three boundaries in the twelfth over, sent down by Prendergast, at which point the rate was below a run a ball for the first time. Nicholas returned to have Boyce caught at mid-off for a 27-ball 26 in the 14th over, in the process terminating a productive stand that had yielded 66 runs in 8.1 overs and giving Storm renewed hope. But skipper Kelly slammed the door shut on West Country ambition, seizing the initiative in a forthright knock of 20 in 18 balls, which put the outcome beyond doubt before Bryce raised her 50 from 31 balls with her sixth four in the 18th over.

ECB requests £500,000 fine, points deductions in Yorkshire racism case

Yorkshire could face points deductions as well as a fine•Getty Images

The ECB has recommended that Yorkshire be fined £500,000 and face points deductions in all three competitions this season in the wake of the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal.Yorkshire pleaded guilty to four amended charges of bringing the game into disrepute earlier this year, with their punishment due to be decided after a Cricket Discipline Committee (CDC) sanctions hearing.Jane Mulcahy KC, representing the ECB, said the governing body was not trying to put Yorkshire out of business and aimed to “strike a balance” in its recommendations. The fine was broken down according to the four charges: £100,000 for mishandling the Rafiq inquiry, £100,000 for destruction of data, £150,000 for not taking action in relation to racist behaviour, and £150,000 for the systemic use of racist language at the club. It was suggested that £350,000 of the fine would be suspended, with the rest paid in instalments. The ECB also proposed sporting sanctions comprising a deduction of 48-72 points in the LV= Insurance County Championship, 4-6 points in the One-Day Cup and 4-6 points in the Vitality Blast.Yorkshire lost a swathe of sponsors over their handling of the Rafiq affair and face severe financial difficulties, with the club owing almost £15 million to the family trust of the former chair, Colin Graves, and in the process of seeking new investment. In a statement released ahead of Tuesday’s hearing, Yorkshire asked that the CDC consider imposing sanctions that “are reflective of the circumstances of the club” after almost two years of turmoil and concerted attempts to “encourage greater inclusivity and tackle discrimination”.”Racism and discrimination in any form is unacceptable and, as a board, we have been clear on the need to take accountability for the historical cultural issues that allowed racist and discriminatory behaviour to go unchallenged at the club,” the statement said. “The acceptance of four amended charges brought by the CDC was part of a continued effort to acknowledge what happened in the past so we can learn and move forward.”In making representations to the CDC panel, we hope to achieve a reasonable sanction which takes into account our acceptance of the charges, YCCC’s current financial position and the robust work we have undertaken to build the foundations for a club which is truly inclusive and welcoming to all.”The Yorkshire hearings took place on the same day that the ECB issued an apology to those who had experienced discrimination in the game following the publication of the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket report.

Gill and Shami seal top-two finish for Titans

Gujarat Titans stormed to a top-two finish for the second time in a row with a 34-run win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Ahmedabad on Monday. With 18 points from 13 matches, the defending champions are the first team to seal a playoff berth, en route knocking Sunrisers out of the contention.Shubman Gill’s maiden IPL hundred and Sai Sudharsan’s 47 propelled Titans to 188 for 9 after being put into bat. That set the stage for Mohammed Shami, Yash Dayal and Mohit Sharma to trigger a Sunrisers collapse very early in the chase and that was basically that. Despite Heinrich Klaasen’s fighting fifty, too much was left too late to chase down.It was also a night when pacers called the shots, accounting for 17 of the 18 wickets to fall on the red-soil pitch at Motera Stadium. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was one among them, who shone the brightest by taking a five-wicket haul, however, it wasn’t enough for Sunrisers who now have nothing to play for but their own wounded pride.

Gill and Sudharsan turn it on

Wriddhiman Saha’s stay was short-lived as he nicked an outswinger from Bhuvneshwar to be out for a duck off the third ball of the innings. From there on, it was the Gill-Sudharsan show as the duo put on 149 runs for the second wicket. Barring them, none of the Titans’ batters even touched double-figures.Both Gill and Sudharsan’s innings were filled with fours – 13 to the centurion and six to the almost half-centurion. They hit ten fours in the powerplay with four of them coming back-to-back in the fourth over bowled by left-arm quick Fazalhaq Farooqi. A pull, a short-arm jab, a cover drive, a scoop, you name it, Gill played it.From 65 for 1 after six overs, the total touched 100 in the next four as the Titans kept accelerating. Interestingly, the first six of the innings came only in the 11th over, off Sudharsan’s bat when he scooped left-arm seamer Marco Jansen over fine leg.Having reached his first fifty, with nine fours and no sixes, in 22 balls, Gill slowed down a bit, needing 34 more to bring up his hundred.Sudharsan, who replaced Vijay Shankar to play his first match in almost a month, looked solid in terms of technique, finding gaps and putting away loose balls. He did, however, benefit from two dropped catches.Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up three wickets in the final over•BCCI

Five-star Bhuvneshwar

It all began in the 15th over bowled by Jansen, who had missed Sunrisers’ last few games. By that time, the left-arm pacer had conceded 32 runs in his three overs and had bowled four wides and two no-balls. Yet Aiden Markram backed him and the bowler repaid that faith. He dismissed Sudharsan with his first delivery of the over when Natarajan ran from backward point and took an excellent catch. In the next over, Bhuvneshwar had Hardik Pandya caught at backward point. Natarajan came on for the 17th over and he picked up the wicket of David Miller. It was then Farooqi’s turn to dismiss the IPL debutant Dasun Shanaka. Then came the final over where Bhuvneshwar went W, W, W, 1, W, 1b to close things out. He scalped three wickets and effected a run-out to finish with an excellent figure of 5 for 30.Three four-wicket hauls in GT vs SRH•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Titans strangle SRH upfront

Sunrisers couldn’t handle the pace of Shami, Dayal and Mohit, who combined to take all nine wickets that fell in the chase. In the first over, Anmolpreet Singh top-edged a back-of-the-length ball and was caught by Rashid Khan, running across from deep third. In the second, Dayal induced an outside edge to send Abhishek Sharma back. Then came steaming hot Shami who was too good for both Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram. At that stage, he seemed almost unplayable – three wickets for five runs in 10 balls.Sunrisers’ 29 for 4 became 59 for 7 when Mohit picked up three wickets in his first two overs.

Klaasen, the lone warrior

Losing regular wickets at the other end didn’t stop Klaasen from looking for quick runs. In an otherwise forgettable season for Sunrisers’ batters, the South African was the only one to cross the 300-run mark this season. On Monday, though he started patiently by scoring 23 off his first 18 deliveries, he took the attack against Noor Ahmad, smashing two sixes and a boundary off his bowling to up the ante. He got to his second fifty of the season in 35 balls. The only notable partnership for the visitors was the one for the eighth wicket between Klaasen (64) and Bhuvneshwar (27) as they stitched 68 runs off 47 deliveries.

India 152 runs away from victory after Jurel, Ashwin and Kuldeep's toil

India’s spinners came to the party on day three in Ranchi after their wicketkeeper dug them out of a hole

Valkerie Baynes25-Feb-20241:11

Manjrekar: Ashwin’s artistry on show once again

R Ashwin’s five-wicket haul, and Kuldeep Yadav’s four, spun India to an achievable target for victory in the third Test, and the series. On a day when two youngsters, each playing their second Tests, confirmed their arrival by exerting considerable influence on the match, it was the vastly experienced Ashwin who lit up India’s efforts to seize some control, with Kuldeep stepping in for an economical 4 for 22 from his 15 overs to help contain England’s advantage to 191.Ashwin followed two wickets in as many balls with that of first-innings centurion Joe Root as England slipped to 65 for 3, then sealed his 35th Test five-for late in the day to bowl England out for 145 in their second innings and give India’s openers a nibble at the deficit over the final 20 minutes or so before the close. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal negotiated that period safely, reducing their task to 152 runs.It came after 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel had posted his maiden Test fifty, falling just 10 runs shy of a ton to be India’s top-scorer as he pushed his side to 307 all out, closing the first-innings gap to 46 after they started the day 134 runs adrift with three wickets in hand. Shoaib Bashir, England’s 20-year-old offspinner who toiled through 32 overs – 31 of them on the trot – for his four wickets on the second day, became the second-youngest England bowler to take a five-for in men’s Tests behind Rehan Ahmed, whom he replaced for this match.England lost 5 for 25 in 21 overs after the tea break as the pitch began to grip and turn more frequently. They were 19 for 2 in the fifth over after Ashwin had Ben Duckett caught at short leg off a length ball which drifted in and found the inside edge, popping to Sarfaraz Khan for a regulation catch. Ollie Pope was out for a pair when Ashwin pinned him lbw next ball, one which didn’t turn as much as the batter had perhaps expected as he was rapped on the back pad in line with leg stump.Root shared a 46-run partnership with Zak Crawley before Ashwin struck again, finding some turn from around the wicket with a full ball that beat Root’s inside edge and rapped the pad. Adjudged not out initially, India reviewed with question marks hanging over whether the ball had pitched outside leg stump, with replays suggesting the ball had pitched marginally in line with leg and was going on to hit it.2:08

Did Kuldeep’s slower pace help him be more dangerous?

Crawley raised his 13th in Test fifty and third of this series, and settled into another stand with Jonny Bairstow, worth 45. Jurel missed a stumping chance off Bairstow when he was on 23 with England 106 for 3 but Kuldeep began to find appreciable turn which accounted for Crawley, bowled on middle stump for 60.Stokes couldn’t stifle a wry smile when he survived an lbw appeal off Ravindra Jadeja on umpire’s call, given his questioning of that element of the DRS earlier in this series, as Jadeja beat him on the inside edge with a delivery that ball-tracking suggested was headed for the top of leg stump.Jadeja and Kuldeep were getting the ball to turn more often late in the middle session on a pitch that was still behaving unpredictably and Kuldeep got Stokes with a gem that stayed low, slid onto the back pad, between the batter’s legs and into the stumps. That left England on 120 for 5 at tea, but Jadeja made it 120 for 6 with the first delivery after the interval, tossing one up off stump which turned away out of a crack as Bairstow jabbed towards Rajat Patidar for a simple catch at short cover.Kuldeep doubled his tally in his ninth over – an eventful one in which he had Tom Hartley well caught by Sarfaraz at mid-on, bringing Ollie Robinson to the crease following his first-innings half-century. Robinson had to call for a review immediately after he was given out lbw attempting a reverse-sweep with replays showing the ball struck his glove on its way through to the pad. There was no reprieve two balls later though, Robinson’s attempt to overturn another lbw decision failing when Kuldeep turned the ball in towards middle and leg, hitting the pad below the knee roll and he was given out umpire’s call on leg stump.Ashwin claimed his fourth with a return catch when Ben Foakes, who had just overturned an lbw decision off the same bowler, failed to pick the carrom ball and chipped straight back. He removed James Anderson for a pair three balls later when Jurel took an excellent one-handed catch behind the stumps.Earlier, Jurel and Kuldeep capitalised on the most favourable batting conditions of the day as they put on a 76-run partnership for the eighth wicket in a steady first hour.Jurel upped the tempo after Anderson bowled Kuldeep for 28 off 131 balls. With a maximum already to his name when he resumed the day on 22, Jurel smashed Bashir down the ground for six and four off consecutive deliveries. He struck two more sixes, off Bashir and Hartley, before he was last man out, bowled by an excellent Hartley delivery which angled in and spun past his defence, crashing into middle and off stump to end an innings of great maturity. Before his dismissal, however, came that of Akash Deep, who also struck a six off Bashir before he provided the spinner’s crucial fifth wicket, lbw for 9 in a decision which stood on umpire’s call despite his hopeful review.

However, the move is in limbo, delayed by Galatasaray’s aggressive push to permanently sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Galatasaray’s pursuit of Osimhen from Napoli has hit a wall due to financial and contractual complications, including instalment terms, resale clauses, and an anti-Juventus condition. These delays are affecting other deals, most notably Morata’s expected return to Milan and subsequent move to Como. With Mauro Icardi sidelined by injury, coach Okan Buruk has halted Morata’s exit, bringing him back for pre-season training. While the Spaniard had already pledged to join Como, no further developments will be allowed to take place until Galatasaray reach a resolution with regards to Osimhen.

While Como have bolstered their squad impressively, Morata remains the missing piece. The deal hasn’t collapsed, but it’s no longer the near-certainty it once appeared. Galatasaray had initially cleared Morata’s return to Italy, supporting his planned move to Como. However, a final agreement with the Rossoneri is still pending. Talks are in the final stages, with both club presidents – Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Olivier Letang involved to iron out the add-on structure. Chevalier’s arrival marks another step in Les Parisiens' commitment to a new transfer model focused on young, high-potential talent. Meanwhile, Donnarumma, despite a strong 2024-25 campaign, has rebuffed their offers to extend his contract. His current deal runs until 2026, but a disagreement over the salary has stalled progress, resulting in interest from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Saudi Arabian clubs.
