Marc-Andre ter Stegen assured Barcelona have no grounds to punish him over medical report as Spanish players' union offers support to goalkeeper

The Spanish players' union reached out to Marc-Andre ter Stegen and offered their support to the player in his dispute with Barcelona.

Ter Stegen and Barcelona are at war with each other, embroiled in a tense dispute over the player's refusal to sign the consent form which will allow Barcelona to share his medical report with La Liga's medical commission. Now, reports the Spanish players' union (AFE) has offered its support to the goalkeeper amid his standoff with the Catalans.

La Liga are now preventing the club from submitting the goalkeeper’s medical report without his consent. According to , Barca management confirms they won’t send the report to the Medical Commission without the player’s approval, despite believing they have legal grounds to do so. Sports law expert Miguel Angel Galan argues that exceptions exist for assessing a worker’s fitness, which may justify Barca's stance. However, he notes the final decision lies with the league.

Meanwhile, the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) has reached out to Ter Stegen, offering support and confirming that Barca’s disciplinary action against him cannot be appealed. In a shift of tone, Barcelona, previously open to reconciliation, have opted against meeting with Ter Stegen unless he initiates it. A scheduled meeting is now on hold, underscoring the widening rift between club and player.

Ter Stegen’s absence from Barcelona’s pre-season tour of Asia, following lower back surgery, has added further tension to his relationship with the club. The situation escalated after the German international released a personal statement about the procedure, reportedly without notifying Barca in advance. In his announcement, Ter Stegen indicated a recovery time of around three months, notably shorter than the club’s internal estimate of four to five months. This discrepancy frustrated Barcelona, who had intended to submit medical documentation to La Liga reflecting the longer timeline. The club did so recently, aiming to activate a financial provision that would allow them to allocate 80 per cent of the goalkeeper’s salary toward registering new signings, in accordance with La Liga’s financial fair play regulations. The lack of coordination has deepened the rift between player and club, complicating an already delicate situation surrounding his recovery and Barca’s registration strategy. Now, without Ter Stegen's signature, the league will not classify his injury as long-term.

Legal proceedings are likely to follow, with the club not ruling out imposing sanctions on Ter Stegen, which could even include the termination of his contract. Ter Stegen, per reports from Spain, has completely cut off all contact with the club. With the league set to begin in less than 10 days, it remains to be seen whether the club and the 33-year-old can find a middle ground, or if the situation ends up exacerbating.

Agora sob comando do Grupo City, Bahia adere à Libra

Heartbreak for Wrexham: Southampton score two late goals to deny Red Dragons win on Championship return despite Josh Windass & Conor Coady heroics

Wrexham snatched defeat from the jaws of victory as two stoppage time goals secured Southampton a comeback 2-1 win in their Championship opener.

    TELL ME MORE

Wrexham initially picked up where they left off after their League One promotion with a street-wise and slick start at St Mary's on Saturday. Right from the off, they went toe to toe with a side that was relegated from the Premier League just a few months ago.

Conor Coady missed a big chance when he volleyed over from inside the six-yard box, and then fellow summer recruit Josh Windass' superb 20-yard effort crashed against the crossbar.

At the other end, new signing Danny Ward made smart stops from Jay Steven Robinson and Adam Armstrong as the Welsh outfit maintained their reputation for a strong defensive line after keeping 24 clean sheets last season.

Wrexham's transfer team would have been licking their lips when Kieffer Moore drove into the box, won a penalty after Ronnie Edwards clumsily fouled him, and Windass scored from the spot in the 22nd minute.

The visitors, who also saw Lewis Brunt's header nestle on the roof of the net, breathed a sigh of relief just before half-time when Robinson's effort from a tight angle hit the post, and then Coady did brilliantly to twice deny Armstrong from point-blank range.

In the second half, Wrexham were content to let Will Still's team have the lion's share of possession and hit them on the counter-attack as the home fans – who howled in anger at referee James Bell's officiating – pleaded for an equaliser.

Those protests did not go away when Joshua Quarshie appealed for a penalty after having his shirt pulled by Sam Smith, but it came to nothing. Wrexham nearly got a second, only for Gavin Bazunu to pull off what would be a match-saving stop to keep out Ryan Hardie's bobbling shot.

Soon after, the away team were denied a famous victory when substitute Ryan Manning fizzed in a brilliant free-kick in the 90th minute from 25 yards. To make matters worse, Jack Stephens scored a 96th-minute winner as he punished some slack defending at the death.

In the end, Wrexham were made to pay for not being proactive enough and sitting too deep as they invited Saints pressure. This one will be tough to swallow for Phil Parkinson and his players, who missed Moore's presence up front.

  • THE MVP

While Moore was a nuisance up front, Windass showed plenty of quality, Ward impressed in goal, and midfielder, Lewis O'Brien was here, there, and everywhere, Coady put in a quality performance. Although his team came away without a point, the former Leicester City man didn't really put a foot wrong. But Manning was the difference maker of the bench for Southampton.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIG LOSER

Wrexham boss Parkinson will be kicking himself for letting this result slip away right at the death. His substitutes did not have the desired effect and they got too defensive as the match wore on. A teachable moment for the manager.

A estátua é bem detalhada.

Wishes from the 'sheriff'! Jude Bellingham FaceTimes James Maddison after Tottenham star undergoes ACL surgery

Jude Bellingham FaceTimed England team-mate James Maddison after the Tottenham forward underwent surgery on his ACL injury. In a touching moment away from the pitch, the Real Madrid star checked in on his compatriot through video calling, delivering a message of strength and support.

What began as a routine pre-season outing against Newcastle last week quickly turned sour for Tottenham as Maddison went down with what was later confirmed as an anterior cruciate ligament injury. It’s a crushing setback for Thomas Frank’s side, who had been counting on the 28-year-old to be a key creative force in their new campaign.

DID YOU KNOW?

Tottenham’s response to Maddison’s absence has been swift. With the Premier League season fast approaching, the club have already tested the waters in the transfer market. Their first move was a €40 million (£35m/$47m) bid for Como’s Nico Paz, but the Italian side swiftly rejected it. Spurs also remain strongly linked with Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze. The 26-year-old has a release clause of £68m ($91.9m/€78.6m), but it will only remain active until August 15, leaving the north London club in a race against the clock to seal a deal.

Barisic repeat: Rangers aiming to sign a "crazy talent" instead of Darling

A huge few weeks are ahead for Rangers.

After the Gers endured a miserable campaign last time round, new manager Russell Martin has a lot of work to do if he is going to dethrone Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Russell Martin watches on whilst in charge of Southampton.

Martin’s first competitive game in charge is little over four weeks away, welcoming Panathinaikos to Ibrox in the Champions League second qualifying round, while the Light Blues will commence their Premiership campaign against Motherwell at Fir Park on 2 August.

Before then, the club are expected to make countless new signings, so are they about to bolster their back-line?

Rangers targeting a new centre-back

According to a report by Hrvoje Tironi in Croatian outlet 24 Sata, Rangers are ‘seriously interested’ in signing Osijek defender Luka Jelenić, facing competition from Portuguese outfit Vitória de Guimarães.

They add that Jelenić only joined Osijek from Varaždin for €800,000 (around £685k) a year ago, but the ‘reliable centre-back’ is likely to be sold for ‘serious money’, following many ‘quality’ performances, despite the fact his team finished down in seventh in last year’s Prva HNL.

Rangers require central defensive reinforcements, especially after it was confirmed on Friday that Leon Balogun had left the club on a free agent for Aris Limassol, where he could partner a familiar face, namely Connor Goldson, in Cyprus next season.

So, could Jelenić prove to be a shrewd addition?

How Jelenić would improve Rangers

As was widely reported, Rangers were strongly interested in signing Harry Darling on a free transfer this summer, given that the Englishman had worked with Martin at both MK Dons and Swansea, but he opted to join Norwich City and Liam Manning instead in the Championship,

This has seemingly seen them step-up their interest in Jelenić, thereby returning to a familiar source of talent, after they failed to convince the now-Canaries star to move to Ibrox.

Back in July 2018, Steven Gerrard’s side dumped NK Osijek out of Europa League qualifying, with Alfredo Morelos the only scorer at Stadion Gradski Vrt, before a 1-1 draw in Glasgow a week later saw them progress.

Gerrard was so impressed with the White and Blues that he swiftly signed two of their players.

The less said about Eros Grezda the better, but the reported £2.2m paid to secure the signature of Borna Barišić proved to be an absolute bargain, considering he would go onto make 236 appearances in a light blue jersey, winning all three domestic trophies, as well as being a key figure in the side that reached the Europa League Final of 2022.

Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

So, could Jelenić have a similar impact?

Well, let’s assess his statistics from this season’s Prva HNL.

As the table outlines, despite somewhat limited minutes, Jelenić ranked highly for every defensive metric, as well as passing accuracy too, underlining that he is a well-rounded defender, who is particularly great at reading the game to make interceptions.

For comparison, Darling ranked 233rd in the EFL Championship for tackles (31) and 130th for interceptions (25), while registering a passing accuracy of 87.8%, only marginally higher than Jelenić’s figure, which suggests that the Croatian star could offer considerably more to the team from a defensive perspective.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labels him a “crazy talent”, while writer Kai Watson outlines how, at 6 ft 2 in tall, Jelenić is physically imposing and boasts ‘strong’ defensive abilities, while also being good in possession.

Meanwhile, Juan Carlos Molero highlights how he is ‘tough to beat’ in defensive duels, and rarely puts a foot wrong.

So, while top target Darling, who has gone elsewhere, is more of a known quantity, Jelenić is certainly a young defender on the up with enormous potential, so it would be an excellent piece of business if Rangers are able to add him to their squad.

Luis Enrique explains why Gianluigi Donnarumma has been dropped and claims he's '100% responsible' for goalkeeper decision

Luis Enrique says he takes full responsibility for dropping Gianluigi Donnarumma from the UEFA Super Cup squad amid transfer rumours.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Ahead of the UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham, the Paris Saint-Germain coach confirmed he personally decided to drop Donnarumma from the squad, with the move coming amid stalled contract talks and transfer speculation. The former Spain coach explained that he wanted a "different kind" of goalkeeper, even though he called Donnarumma “one of the best in the world.”

However, the statement didn't go down well with the Italian stopper, who took to social media to call the decision hurtful. He said he was “disappointed and disheartened” to be told he could no longer be part of the group and expressed a desire for a proper farewell.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Donnarumma joined PSG in 2021 and played a key role in their Champions League and treble-winning season in June. However, with contract talks stalling, the French club signed young goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier as the new starter, effectively pushing Donnarumma out. His agent, Enzo Raiola, has criticised PSG’s handling of the situation, suggesting they are considering legal action against the Champions League winners.

Raiola said: "I understand the need to buy a new goalkeeper, but dismissing Gigio after everything he's done for the club is a huge lack of respect that I will assess with my lawyers. Beyond the fact that it was the coach who made this decision, he also works for the club, and my lawyers and I want to better understand their position."

  • WHAT LUIS ENRIQUE SAID

Luis Enrique has given his say on the matter, though, explaining why he made the decision to drop the Italian. He told reporters: "Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, without a doubt, and even better as a person. However, this is the life of a top-level footballer, and I am 100% responsible for this difficult decision. If it were easy, anyone would do it. These decisions have to do with the profile of the goalkeeper my team needs.

"Lucas Chevalier and Renato Marin have also arrived as signings. These are always difficult decisions to make. I know that. I can only speak highly of Donnarumma. He's one of the best players in his position, without a doubt. He's even better as a person. But we're looking for a different type of goalkeeper. And I'll repeat it. It's always difficult to manage these kinds of situations… There's no more dwelling, no more questions. It's my decision, which the club supports, and we're looking for the best solution for all parties involved."
