India's misfiring batters in the spotlight as West Indies eye series win

Big Picture – Can West Indies seal the series?
West Indies, 2-0 up with three T20Is remaining, have the chance to win their first series of two or more matches against India, in any format, since 2016. They also have the chance to complete back-to-back T20I series victories for the first time since 2017. If they manage to pull it off, it will be a massive confidence boost for West Indies, who will be co-hosting a T20 World Cup less than a year from now.Whether they can seal the series on Tuesday may come down once again to how they tackle India’s spinners, which they did quite well in the first two matches.Pooran fined for umpire criticism

Nicholas Pooran has been fined 15% of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second T20I against India. Pooran was found to have breached Article 2.7 which relates to public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match. The incident occurred following the review of an lbw decision in the fourth over of India’s innings. Pooran criticised the umpires for having to use up a player review for a decision that he thought was not out.
Pooran admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction of a reprimand that was proposed by match referee Richie Richardson. One demerit point has also been added to Pooran’s disciplinary record.

At the forefront of their success has been Nicholas Pooran, who, along with Shimron Hetmyer, has been tasked with taking on India’s wristspinners. Pooran has done the job to perfection, leading the counterattacks on both occasions. The bowlers have also been on point with their execution, mixing it up on pitches that have been two-paced.West Indies have also come out on top in the game of nerves so far: while their bowlers closed out the series-opener on Thursday, their batters did the same in the second game after the team had lost four wickets for three runs in a space of 13 balls. While the likes of Rovman Powell and Hetmyer have offered Pooran support with the bat, West Indies will expect more runs from their top three.Related

India LLWWLIn the spotlight – Hardik Pandya and Kyle Mayers
India captain Hardik Pandya has exuded cool-guy energy despite the losses. “It is what it is,” he said, rather philosophically, after their loss on Sunday. While he’s found his bowling rhythm, his batting has not reached its usual level, and he’s also been under scrutiny for his tactics on the field. In the first T20I, Hardik gave the last over of the powerplay to Axar Patel, despite the in-form and left-handed Pooran’s presence in the middle; that over ended up costing 14 runs. In the second T20I, Hardik did not bowl out his best bowler – Yuzvendra Chahal – during a nail-biting chase when West Indies’ lower order was struggling. The constant presence of left-handers at the crease also meant Axar ended up playing as a pure batter in the second T20I, after being taken for 22 runs in two overs in the first game.Ishan Kishan and Ravi Bishnoi might be under pressure to keep their places in India’s XI•AFP/Getty Images

Kyle Mayers had a superb IPL season, but he’s not been able to replicate that form while playing for West Indies. After a middling ODI series, he’s made 1 and 15 in the first two T20Is. His T20I average is currently 20.75. West Indies have continued to show faith in him despite this, and he will hope to contribute consistently in the top order, which has been one of the team’s weak links in this series.Team news – Will India bring in Yashasvi Jaiswal?
The hosts are unlikely to make too many changes to their winning combination.West Indies (probable): 1 Brandon King, 2 Kyle Mayers, 3 Johnson Charles (wk), 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Rovman Powell (capt), 7 Jason Holder, 8 Romario Shepherd, 9 Akeal Hosein, 10 Alzarri Joseph, 11 Obed McCoyWill India consider bringing in Yashasvi Jaiswal to lengthen their batting? They could bring him in for Ishan Kishan, who has averaged 12.12 in eight T20Is since the start of this year, considering they have another wicketkeeping option in Sanju Samson. India may also want to bring back Kuldeep Yadav – who was out of the second T20I after being hit in the nets – if he’s fit. Ravi Bishnoi, who replaced him, went wicketless for 31 runs.India (probable): 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Ishan Kishan/ Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Tilak Varma, 5 Hardik Pandya (capt), 6 Sanju Samson (wk), 7 Axar Patel, 8 Kuldeep Yadav, 9 Yuzvendra Chahal, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Mukesh KumarPitch and conditions
The surface for the second T20I at Providence Stadium was a slow one, and it’s likely to remain that way; expect spin and slower balls to have their say once more. The weather is expected to be cloudy with a chance of rain in the afternoon.Stats and TriviaPooran has scored half-centuries in his last three T20I innings at the Providence StadiumYuzvendra Chahal took 28 wickets in 26 T20Is at a strike rate of 19.1 across 2021 and 2022. In 2023 so far, he has eight wickets in six games at a strike rate of 12.7.Quotes”We decided on just looking at some players’ workload [for the West Indies T20I series], that we wanted to make sure that they get enough break time and manage them. I definitely fall in that [category] as well. There is another reason to come here [to the USA]. Because you know the World Cup is coming. In June [2024], there will be the T20 World Cup happening in this part of the world. So I’m pretty sure everyone is excited.”

'Probably got to be a bit smarter' – Maxwell's ankle adds World Cup uncertainty

Glenn Maxwell says he is going to have to carefully manage his preparation ahead of the ODI World Cup and may not play all of the lead-in series against India after he was ruled out of the recent T20I series in South Africa due to soreness in his ankle stemming from his previously broken leg.Maxwell was only in South Africa for four days after experiencing soreness in his left ankle while running a lap at his first training session. It is the same leg that he, in his own words, “snapped in half” in a freak accident last November. He has screws still in the ankle following surgery but this soreness stemmed from a different spot to previous pain he has experienced.Related

Speaking at the BBL overseas draft on Sunday night where he was part of Melbourne Stars’ list team, Maxwell confirmed that he had had a cortisone injection in the ankle and revealed that he was unsure how much of the India series he will play as he and the Cricket Australia strength and conditioning team try to map out a program to have him fully fit for the World Cup.”I still want to play some part of that India series,” Maxwell said. “But I’m not feeling any pressure on it. The selectors and the staff have been brilliant with me as well. They don’t want to put too much pressure on me to sort of set that date because they know they’ve got a bit of extra time before the World Cup. So instead of rushing it and probably putting myself a week or two behind, being able to give myself extra time and make sure we get through the whole tournament.”CA’s medical took a conservative approach by ruling him out of the T20I series in South Africa, which Australia wrapped up 3-0 on Sunday, given he was already set to miss the five ODIs that start on Thursday due to the impending birth of his first child.Maxwell is expected to be named in Australia’s initial 15-player World Cup squad on Wednesday, although there are a number of other injury concerns including Mitchell Starc (groin), Steven Smith (wrist), Pat Cummins (wrist) and Ashton Agar (calf) heading into the tournament. Australia do not have to finalise the squad until September 28, after the three matches against India.Maxwell will meet with CA’s medical team on Monday to plan out the next couple of weeks leading into flying to India, after the flight to South Africa and a compromised lead-in led to the soreness he experienced.”I don’t think I could have predicted how sore I was going to be once I got to South Africa,” he said. “But it was one of those things. Even when I went to train that day, I still felt fine. There was nothing wrong. Something just got impinged. I think one of the tendons around my ankle was a little bit inflamed, there’s a bit of swelling, so it kept on catching which meant it just gave me a bit of pain. Hopefully, the cortisone takes care of that and I can get back up and running to where I was just before I went to South Africa.”We’ve probably just got to be a bit smarter going forward. Making sure that my preparation is a bit more managed, I think leading into a flight like that. I’m already back in the gym, so I’ll probably get back into full training probably this week, so it won’t be a long turnaround. It’s just knowing that I’m not over the hurdle of the original injury yet.”Complicating matters further is the birth of his first child. Maxwell is aware that he faces a delicate balancing act on all fronts over the coming weeks.”It’s going to be a busy fortnight,” Maxwell said. “I suppose I’m trying to manage my program and I’ll sit down with the strength conditioning crew tomorrow and nut out of a genuine plan but obviously there’s some distractions as well.”I’m trying to manage obviously a pretty special time my life with a pretty big time my career, trying to manage those two and work out the balance.”Glenn Maxwell has played regular cricket since return from his injury•Getty Images

Maxwell has had a lot of cricket this year since returning from injury in February. He has played 28 T20 matches in the IPL and the Blast and two first-class games for Victoria and Warwickshire, but he has only managed one 50-over match in that time, in part due to the schedule. He was withdrawn from the Hundred prior to the issue in South Africa to rest ahead of the World Cup.He remains a vital part of Australia’s World Cup plans with his offspin especially important in India as Australia do not have a lot of spin-bowling allrounders in their squad. Smith and Travis Head are capable but neither have done much bowling in recent ODI’s. Head has bowled in just four of his last 20 ODIs, and only 13 overs in total in that time, while Smith has bowled just five overs in his last 73 ODIs. Marnus Labuschagne has been omitted from the initial 18-man World Cup squad although he is in the squad for the South Africa ODIs as Smith’s injury replacement.Australia’s selectors have called up Tim David to the South Africa ODI series to give him some exposure in case Maxwell is not fit for the World Cup. David can’t replace Maxwell’s allround skill but Maxwell believes he can translate his T20 form into the ODI format.”He’s a wonderful addition,” Maxwell said. “I think the way he batted in that first [T20I against South Africa], showed great maturity, and a great level head and I think any time you bring a player in who’s in good form, he’s got a history of great power hitting at the back end, but what we probably haven’t seen a lot on the international stage from Tim is that style of play where he is able to get through a tough time. He’s a very good player of spin. He bats well in India. It doesn’t surprise me that he’s been added to that squad.”

Welsh Fire quash London Spirit to keep top three hopes burning

Home pace attack sets up important win on seamers’ paradise at Sophia Gardens

ECB Reporters Network20-Aug-2023Welsh Fire’s seamers set them on the path to a victory which keeps their top three hopes alive, with Jonny Bairstow top scoring as they chased down 110.Captain Tom Abell and Glenn Phillips finished the match with a partnership of 41 off 24 balls, after the platform had been set by the seam bowlers who took 8-65 between them.New Zealand pair Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson impressed in their first game while David Willey and David Payne also took advantage of a seam-friendly wicket, all taking two wickets each. London Spirit had Ravi Bopara to thank for getting them to three figures after an early batting collapse, while Dan Worrall took three early wickets to give them hope in the field. The result sees the two teams swap places in the table between fifth and sixth, while Welsh Fire are level on points with third place, but behind on net run rate.Welsh Fire had lost Pakistan pair Shaheen Shah Afridi and Harris Rauf as they returned to international duty, but Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson flew in from New Zealand as quality replacements. The new-look bowling attack was soon unleashed after London Spirit captain Dan Lawrence won the toss and elected to bat.The tone was set by David Willey who did not concede a run in his opening five balls to Zak Crawley. He did not have to wait long to add a wicket, returning for the third set and dismissing Crawley, caught behind by Joe Clarke via bat and pad.Henry was proving equally effective as his bounce saw the end of Lawrence second ball, caught in the covers by Tom Abell, soon followed by Australian Matthew Wade caught behind trying to scoop Willey.In-form Adam Rossington had been watching the carnage from the other end, but he fell trying to hit Henry out of the ground, a top edge well taken by Abel running back. Willey and Henry bowled all the first 30 balls between them and the Spirit score at that stage was just 21 for 4.Daryl Mitchell and Ravi Bopara started rebuilding, but could only amass 42 at the half way stage. Then Mitchell went to David Payne, Willey taking the boundary catch from a short ball. Matt Critchley’s breezy 21 came to an end when he skied an attempted pull from Ferguson, Glenn Phillips taking the catch. The run rate was always slow, it was only the 92nd ball that the runs equalled the balls bowled for the first time. Ravi Bopara played responsibly, finishing 24 not out off 20, while Liam Dawson’s 24 was a useful contribution as well as Spirit crept up to 109 for 9.The bowling figures were impressive, Willey, Henry, Ferguson and Payne all getting two wickets each, with Henry, Willey and Payne all conceding less than a run a ball.Any possible complacency in the Welsh Fire line-up would soon have been dispelled by Spirit opening bowler Dan Worrall, whose away swing with the new ball proved hard to play. Steve Eskinazi went on the attack and skied the ball, while Joe Clarke and Luke Wells both were caught behind misjudging the swing.Worrall bowled 20 of the first 25 balls, Bairstow hitting a couple of fours to leave the Australian’s final figures as 3 for 24. Bairstow and Tom Abell put on fifty before Barstow was bowled for 41 going for a big swipe off Liam Dawson.Abell survived to see it through, given good support by Phillips, the pair taking 15 from a Daryl Mitchell set of five balls to settle nerves in the final section of the innings. Phillips finished it with a straight six off Nathan Ellis. Abell finished on 37 and Phillips on 21.

Aston Villa now leading race to sign "amazing" 14-goal striker in £33m deal

With the summer transfer window approaching, Aston Villa now reportedly lead the race to sign a Champions League striker who would cost them just over £33m in the coming months.

Aston Villa set to finally replace Duran

If those in the Midland believed that Unai Emery’s attacking options were too good to be true at the start of the season then they were quickly proven right in the January transfer window. The Villans were spoilt for choice with both Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran – both of whom were in excellent form in the opening stages of the season – but it was not a luxury that the latter appreciated.

Aston Villa in contact to sign "magnificent" France U21 rising star

They could land an absolute bargain…

Often forced to perform in cameo roles as Emery’s super sub, Duran headed for the exit door in January, swapping the Midlands for Saudi Arabia and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr side. And whilst since then Marco Asensio has joined Marcus Rashford to add more firepower to their frontline, Villa need a permanent solution away from their loan deals.

With money still to burn from Duran’s sale, a fresh attacking option could be on the cards given recent links to previous target Joao Felix and now another Serie A star.

According to TeamTalk, Aston Villa are now leading the race to sign Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus this summer ahead of their Premier League rivals. The Serbian striker has gradually fallen down the pecking order in Turn and new manager Igor Tudor has now reportedly been told to hand him game time in an attempt to maximise his value.

As things stand, Vlahovic is worth just €40m (£33.5m) in what would hand Villa the chance to land an undeniable bargain. Emery has already helped both Asensio and Rashford rediscover their best form and could now take a gamble on Vlahovic before doing the same next season.

"Amazing" Vlahovic needs Aston Villa move

Villa Park is the place to be for struggling stars to rediscover their golden touch and that may not be any different for Vlahovic. It’s worth noting that, even amid criticism as Juventus, the Serbia international has still scored 14 goals in all competitions in a record that could only improve given that he’s just 25 years old.

It wasn’t so long ago that the forward found himself at the centre of praise either, with football talent scout Jacek Kulig describing the Juventus man as “simply an amazing centre-forward when fully fit” midway through last season.

Juventus already made one mistake by letting Dean Huijsen leave for the Premier League last summer, before watching the defender thrive at Bournemouth. Now, a year on, Villa could take full advantage of their exit door swinging open once again as Vlahovic desperately seeks the chance to get back to his best.

Blame Jude Bellingham: Borussia Dortmund told price for new midfielder Jobe was hiked due to sharing surname with Real Madrid star

Jobe left Sunderland for DortmundJude played for Bundesliga giantsHamann hails 'great move'Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Ex-Liverpool star Hamann has claimed Dortmund may have overpaid in their efforts to sign Jobe due to the success of his brother and namesake Jude. The latter is now regarded as one of the very best players in the world following his move to Real Madrid, where he won a La Liga and Champions League double in his first season. Jobe has now also joined a European giant in Dortmund, where Jude also cut his teeth before relocating to Spain.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Jobe completed a €33m transfer to Germany earlier this month after helping Sunderland achieve promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs. He made his Dortmund debut on Tuesday during the goalless Club World Cup draw with Fluminense and Hamann has claimed the move looks good for all parties.

WHAT HAMANN SAID

Hamann told : "I don't think his surname did him any harm. It probably only hurt Borussia Dortmund because it would've led to a bigger transfer fee.

"Jude was a bit younger when he joined and cost a bit less, we will just have to wait and see how it works out.

"What I will say is that the Championship is a tough league. To make your mark there as a teenager you have to be very tough, that will do him well in the Bundesliga.

"In terms of Dortmund, Jadon Sancho, Jamie Gittens, Jude, Erling Haaland and so many others have improved leaps and bounds at the club, it’s a great place for Jobe to develop.

"They handle young players so well and I think it’s a great move all round. There is a hefty price tag and expectations and he will be compared to his brother even though play in slightly different positions – but the fans are very excited."
