WHAT HAPPENED?
Monterrey have moved quickly and decisively, officially announcing Spanish manager Domènec Torrent as their new head coach this Wednesday – just as Chivas continue to search for a replacement. Torrent will take charge of in the coming days, ahead of a busy stretch that includes the upcoming Liga MX season and a high-stakes appearance at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
In a statement shared on their official social media channels, the club introduced their new manager with enthusiasm: "The club has reached an agreement with Domènec Torrent to take over as head coach of Rayados. The Catalan coach brings experience developed alongside the world’s best, a balanced, dynamic, and competitive style of play, and familiarity with Mexican football. This city beats for Monterrey—now we beat together, mister!"

THE BIGGER PICTURE
At 62, Torrent brings a unique blend of elite experience and familiarity with Mexican football. This will be his second stint in Liga MX, following a notable run with Atlético de San Luis. In his debut tournament with during the Apertura 2024, he led them to a club-record 30 points and an impressive playoff campaign, knocking out Tigres in the quarterfinals before falling to in the semis. However, his second season was less successful, finishing with 18 points and missing out on the Play-In, which led to his recent departure from the club.
Torrent’s managerial résumé includes stops in MLS, Brazil, Turkey, and, most famously, a long-term collaboration with Pep Guardiola. He served as Guardiola’s assistant from the Barcelona B era all the way through the historic treble-winning years at Barça, then followed him to Bayern Munich and Manchester City. He eventually stepped into a head coaching role in 2018 with New York City FC, where he set a franchise record with 68 points and captured the Supporters' Shield.
He later took the reins at Flamengo in 2020, where he earned 15 wins in 26 matches across all competitions. However, a four-match winless streak brought that chapter to a close. A brief stint with Galatasaray followed, but after eight losses in 20 matches, he parted ways with the Turkish giants.

Now back in Mexico, Torrent begins a new chapter with one of the country’s most ambitious clubs. Monterrey’s last league title came in the Apertura 2019 under Antonio Mohamed, and expectations are high for Torrent to bring silverware back to the trophy cabinet—both domestically and on the global stage.

Sunderland missed out on signing an “incredible” attacking talent in the January transfer window, with the player in question reportedly turning down a move to the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland preparing for huge Leeds clash
The Black Cats face arguably their biggest test of the season on Monday night, making the trip to Leeds United for a much-anticipated Championship clash.
Regis Le Bris’ side take on the league’s second-place team at Elland Road, in what represents a massive game for both outfits. Sunderland are fourth in the league after the weekend action, and they know that victory would take them level on points with Burnley and just four behind a top-two spot.
Sunderland'sJobeBellingham
Regardless of the result on Monday, the Black Cats know that they are in a wonderful position to at least finish in the playoff places this season, but failure to win would be a big blow to their automatic promotion hopes.
This will be a huge gauge of where Sunderland are at under Le Bris, in terms of genuinely being automatic contenders or a step down from that level, and it promises to be a fascinating evening against Leeds.
It turns out that they could have had a top-quality player in their ranks for this match, had things panned out a little differently.
Sunderland missed out on "incredible" striker
According to Sunderland AFC News, Adam Armstrong “rejected a deadline day move” to Sunderland, instead deciding to join West Brom on loan from Southampton. That’s due to his “Newcastle allegiances”, having been at the Black Cats’ biggest rivals in the past.
The 28-year-old scored on his debut for the Baggies, coming in a 2-1 win at home to Sheffield Wednesday, and could prove to be an influential signing for them between now and the end of the season.
Armstrong would have been a perfect addition for Sunderland until May, proving to be a guaranteed source of goals and assists at this level. The striker has scored 78 times in the Championship, as well as registering 33 assists in the competition, and former Southampton manager Russell Martin waxed lyrical about him earlier in the season.
“He has been incredible. As a person first, and with the goals as well. He is brave and aggressive. He is just like a warrior. Every team meeting we show a clip of him recovering. He is a striker and tackles and wins the ball. He is demanding of himself and his team-mates, which I think is really important. That’s one of the reasons why he has been wearing the armband.”
Armstrong’s pace and finishing would have been such a potent weapon for Sunderland, so it is hard not to rue him not joining, but the Newcastle element of things was always going to make it difficult.

He’s finally on course to return.

Hopefully, the Black Cats will still be able to secure promotion back to the Premier League without the Englishman, but he could have been a difference-maker for Le Bris in tight games.
Ollie Robinson has been likened to Glenn McGrath for his height and metronomic bowling style, and the England man seems keen to fulfil a similar pantomime villain role when it comes to the Ashes.Having suggested a couple of weeks ago, in an interview with BBC local radio, that England could give Australia “a good hiding” this summer, Robinson was happy to once again talk up his side’s chances while on pre-season media duties for Sussex at Hove. “The way we’re playing cricket, we feel like we can really stick one on them and win the series comfortably,” he said with a smile. For Robinson, who ended the previous Ashes in Australia under scrutiny about his fitness levels, having been last man out at Hobart to complete a 4-0 drubbing, this summer’s contest also represents an opportunity to atone – albeit 11 wickets at 25.54 put him second on the England averages in 2021-22.Related

“There’s definitely a desire there still, a hunger to put it right,” he said. “I felt when I got back from that trip I didn’t leave it all out there and I’d let myself down and the side down a little bit. So it’s definitely something I want to put right and there’s a few fellas in that position as well. So there’s a lot of hungry boys this summer to beat the Aussies again.”Of his recent comments, he said he was happy to have fired the first shots in the 2023 Ashes phoney war: “I was talking to local radio but I was happy that it got out. I mean it’s been happening in every Ashes series for years – Glenn McGrath says 5-0 every Ashes. We say 5-0 every Ashes. It’s one of the biggest series we play, it only comes around every four years in England, so why not talk it up? Get it going, get it big and give the fans what they want.”I think the cricket we’re playing at the moment makes it such an exciting time to play them. We’ve been dominating teams in all conditions for 12 months now. In England we dominated, in Pakistan we dominated and in New Zealand we played most of the cricket for nine days and lost on the last day because we probably weren’t quite there. But I think the way we’re playing cricket, we feel like we can really stick one on them and win the series comfortably.”Robinson is currently No. 6 in the world on the ICC’s bowler rankings, and looks a leaner, fitter presence after heeding the advice of his Test captain, Ben Stokes, last year. He is set to play “three or four” of Sussex’s opening six County Championship games, as part of his preparations for the Test summer, and said that he had already begun to focus his training on pitching the ball up again, after feeling that he had slipped into bowling “pretty” lengths during England’s 1-1 draw in New Zealand last month. He will also be able to practice his Ashes smack talk in the dressing room in a few weeks, with Australia’s Steven Smith due to arrive for a three-game stint with Sussex in May.”It’ll be good to have him here,” Robinson said. “For county cricket it’s great to have Steve Smith at Sussex. For myself, it’s not going to change a huge amount. I’ll prepare the same way. I might get a better look at him in the nets.”I might not bowl at him to be honest. We’ll see how it goes. But we had [Cheteshwar] Pujara here last summer and we played India and I bowled at him a lot. I don’t read too much into it. He’s a good player, he’s going to get runs whether I bowl at him here or not. It’s one of those things.”The signing of Smith, who will be looking to attune himself to English conditions ahead of Australia’s appearance in the World Test Championship final against India, and then the subsequent Ashes, prompted familiar questions about whether the county system should be providing such a service for England’s great rivals. But Paul Farbrace, Sussex’s new head coach and England’s assistant the last time they won the Ashes in 2015, argued that the presence of Smith could potentially be of benefit to Stokes and Brendon McCullum in the long run – with Tom Haines, who scored a century on debut for England Lions over the winter, foremost among a crop of young batters at Hove who will be looking to learn from the way Smith goes about his business.”We want to keep county cricket strong and we want the best players coming to play county cricket,” Farbrace said. “In Tom Haines we’ve got a player who could very much be playing for England in the next 12-18 months. If he spends a month with Steve Smith, batting in the middle and learning about international cricket from him, then Steve Smith is doing English cricket a huge favour.”As long as we can remember, county cricket has been the finishing school for cricketers from all over the world. I was lucky enough to play against Viv Richards and Richard Hadlee and people like that. These players came over and enhanced county cricket. Either we want county cricket to be the best version of cricket in the world it can be or we want it to be second-rate where we don’t want overseas players.”If you ask members and supporters, they want to watch the best players. We moan when we can’t see our own international players, so let’s get the best internationals we can over here and make county championship cricket the best it can be. If it means Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne come and get an opportunity before the Ashes, why not? Absolutely why not?”

Desperately hoping to welcome some much-needed upgrades in the summer, Manchester United have now reportedly made contact over a potential deal to sign a 17-goal striker.
Man Utd transfer news
Closer to the relegation zone than they are to the top four, out of the FA Cup on penalties and stealing all the wrong headlines away from the pitch, Manchester United’s season couldn’t have gone much worse since Ruben Amorim’s arrival. Once again, the Red Devils were blunt against Fulham and once again, Rasmus Hojlund struggled to make his mark with his £72m fee becoming more regretful by the day.
That failure on the pitch continues to have plenty of consequences away from the action too. INEOS’ ruthless cost-cutting measures have been no secret in recent months, with a struggling side costing the jobs of those outside of playing roles as Manchester United desperately look to claw back from growing debt.
Man Utd braced for lowball £16m offer for red-hot player as talks planned
Man Utd will have a decision to make soon as a bid is expected to arrive well below their asking price.
ByBrett Worthington Mar 3, 2025
Just where that leaves the Red Devils in the summer transfer window remains to be seen. Amorim’s side undeniably needs a rebuild, but sales must simply come first before United can splash the cash they’ve recently been linked with spending.
According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United have made contact by expressing an interest in signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig this summer. The impressive striker would certainly be an upgrade on Hojlund, but given that his release clause is expected to be worth a hefty €80m (£66m) at the end of the season, United may have to settle for other options.
With the likes of Arsenal also interested in signing Sesko this summer too, Manchester United are likely to face an uphill battle in the race to secure his signature.
"Excellent" Sesko would be an instant upgrade
Whether it’s been Joshua Zirkzee or Hojlund this season, Manchester United’s frontline simply has not been good enough this season and looks unlikely to change with their current options. Amorim has seen how his system can flourish when a talented goalscorer leads the line courtesy of Viktor Gyokeres. Now, Manchester United need to do everything in their power to replicate that by signing Sesko.
With 17 goals to his name this season in all competitions, the Leipzig star has scored more than both Zirkzee and Hojlund combined. Finally beginning to reach the “high” ceiling and using the “excellent fundamentals” that analyst Ben Mattinson praised last summer, Sesko is destined for a big move.
Whether that big move is one to Old Trafford remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that Sesko would finally end Manchester United’s striker woes.

The Afghanistan board calls CA’s decision “pathetic”, and says it will write to the ICC over the issue

Rashid Khan has threatened to pull out of the BBL, where he plays for Adelaide Strikers, following Cricket Australia’s decision to withdraw its men’s team from a bilateral ODI series against Afghanistan in March because of the Taliban’s stance banning university education for girls in the country.”I am really disappointed to hear that Australia have pulled out of the series to play us in March,” Rashid said. “I take great pride in representing my country, and we have made great progress on the world stage. This decision from CA sets us back in that journey. If playing vs Afghanistan is so uncomfortable for Australia, then I wouldn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable with my presence in the BBL. Therefore, I will be strongly considering my future in that competition.”Rashid played eight matches for Strikers this season before leaving to play for MI Cape Town in the SA20. He was not expected to return to the BBL this season because of conflicting commitments.
Rashid’s statement joined a chorus of protests from Afghanistan’s male cricketers and came shortly after the Afghanistan Cricket Board had called CA’s statement “pathetic”. The ACB said it would write to the ICC over the issue, saying the Australian board was “prioritising political interests over the principles of fair play and sportsmanship”, and “undermining the integrity of the game and damaging the relationship between the two nations”.Earlier on Thursday, CA had announced its decision to withdraw the Australian men’s team from a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in the UAE following consultation with the Australian government. The reason given was a recent announcement from the Taliban – which governs Afghanistan – that it was banning university education for girls, a development that ICC CEO Geoff Allardice had described as concerning.Related

The ACB said in its response that it would now “rethink the participation of Afghan players in the Big Bash League” if CA did not overturn its decision. The ACB’s statement, however, did not make a specific mention of the future of women’s cricket in Afghanistan.”Cricket Australia’s decision to withdraw from upcoming matches against Afghanistan is coming after consultation and potential enforcement from the Australian Government, which is an unfortunate attempt to enter the realm of politics and politicise the sport,” the ACB statement said. "The decision to withdraw from playing the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan is unfair and unexpected, and will have a negative impact on the development and growth of cricket in Afghanistan as well as will affect the love and passion of the Afghan nation for the game.”Cricket has played a significant role in promoting unity and national pride in Afghanistan. After years of war and conflict, cricket has helped to bring people together and provide a sense of normalcy to the country. It has also been an important source of hope and inspiration for all Afghans, particularly young people. In addition, Cricket [sic] has also been an important tool for promoting education and social development in the country.”The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has been working to promote cricket in schools and universities, and it has also been using the sport to promote healthy lifestyles and discourage young people from getting involved in drugs and crime. Cricket has been an important tool for promoting peace, unity, and development in Afghanistan, and it will continue to be a source of inspiration and hope for the people of the country in the years to come.”This is the second time in two years that CA have cancelled a bilateral fixture with Afghanistan due to the Taliban government’s policies on women following the postponement of the one-off Test that was scheduled to be played in Hobart in November 2021.Australia did play Afghanistan in Adelaide during the recent T20 World Cup. They are slated to meet Afghanistan twice more in the next Future Tours cycle, with three T20Is scheduled at a neutral venue in August 2024, and Afghanistan due to tour Australia in August 2026 to play one Test and three T20Is.

Man City struggled in the season after slow summerAl-Mubarak announces plans to splash the cashPlanning to make signings quickly before Club World CupFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?
Manchester City suffered their first trophyless season since the 2016-17 campaign, which was Pep Guardiola's first season in charge at Etihad Stadium. The disappointing 2024-25 season came on the back of their rather inactive summer transfer window in 2024, which saw them only make two moves: re-signing Ilkay Gundogan and signing Savinho from their sister club, Troyes.

Al-Mubarak has now claimed that the club made a mistake by not being aggressive last summer, as he blamed the lack of squad rejuvenation for the failures of the 2024-25 season. The City chairman also warned other Premier League clubs that his side are ready to splash the cash this summer as they look to help Guardiola fight to get their Premier League title back from Liverpool.
AFPWHAT AL-MUBARAK SAID
Speaking in an address to the City fans, Al-Mubarak said: "We will be back and the aim is to build something even better. History is great — but then there’s a new page to write. The future is about what we can do together. How can we keep winning? We’ve been working and preparing for next season since January. We’ll take all the good things and the not-so-good things from this season, learn from it, improve and get better.”
On this season's disappointments: “The beauty of football is that there’s always a new season. And today we get to turn this page. The season that just passed is behind us. The records are there. What we achieved and what we haven’t. And it’s basically black and white. Many circumstances just didn’t work our way.
“Last summer, we probably should have been more aggressive in some changes we needed to do. We didn’t do that and it ended up costing us. We already started that team rebuild in January."

WHAT NEXT FOR MAN CITY?
The eight-time Premier League champions will be keen on showing the world that they are down but not out as of yet, as they plan to make signings before the start of the Club World Cup in June. Al-Mubarak added: “We’ve identified who the targets are, in what positions, and have clear No. 1 and No. 2 options. We’ll go about our business, and it will be very clear, very swift. Our objective is to be ready with the new squad for the Club World Cup.”
One high-profile manager has hinted that he is open to managing Rangers in the future, as those at Ibrox search for Philippe Clement’s long-term successor.
Rangers manager rumours
The Gers decided to bring in former captain Barry Ferguson until the end of the season after parting ways with the Belgian.
However, in the Scottish Premiership, things didn’t go to plan for Ferguson in his first game in charge at Ibrox last weekend. Ferguson’s side lost to Motherwell, however, the ex-skipper can improve his chances of getting the Rangers job on a full-time basis with a positive result against Celtic next weekend.
Top target: 49ers and Rangers now want "excellent" 4-4-2 manager at Ibrox
He’s looking for a job.

It isn’t just Ferguson who has been mentioned as a target for Rangers, with likely new owners the 49ers Enterprises on the manager hunt after agreeing a deal in principle to own the Scottish giants.
Derek McInnes of Kilmarnock and former Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner were two early names mentioned with the long-term Ibrox vacancy, and recently, it has been claimed that Rangers and the 49ers have made Rafael Benitez the preferred managerial target.
The Spaniard has been out of work for 12 months now after leaving Celta Vigo but is keen to return to the dugout, and another experienced name has also hinted at a move to Scotland, but not immediately.
Mourinho hints at managing Rangers in future
Rangers are currently halfway through their Europa League last 16 tie with Fenerbahce, with Ferguson coming up against iconic manager Jose Mourinho.
During the first leg in Turkey, Ferguson got the better of Mourinho, with Rangers taking a 3-1 advantage into the second leg after an opening goal from Cyriel Dessers and a brace from Vaclav Cerny.
The former Real Madrid, Chelsea and Man Utd boss was asked about the chances of managing in Scotland in the future, and appeared to be open to a move down the line, saying ‘why not?’
Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce.
“In this moment, no, because I have a job. It’s a job that motivates me and demands loyalty. But why not in the future? People can say the Scottish league is a league of two teams, but it is a league of passion. Passion in football is everything.
“To play in empty stadiums and competitions where there is not that fire of the passion does not make any sense.
“Celtic and Rangers are two big clubs with incredible history also in Europe. I have lots of respect. They are big clubs with big fan bases, expectations. Celtic has a fantastic coach in Brendan [Rodgers]. Rangers has Ferguson now and I am not searching for a new job.”

Mourinho, who plays a 3-5-2 system and has been called “outstanding”, currently has Fenerbahce second in the Super Lig, four points behind Galatasaray. He also has a 100% record against Rangers’ rivals, Celtic, beating them in the 2003 UEFA Cup final with FC Porto to win his first European trophy.
