Sophie Devine wants to 'pinch the Rose Bowl back' from Australia

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine is putting a positive spin on the two-week quarantine period that her team will have to undergo on their tour of Australia. Devine said the isolation will allow the players to spend time together ahead of the limited-overs series starting September 26, and said they were “in a really fortunate position” to be able to get back on the park so soon.”It’s one of the silver linings of this trip,” Devine told NZC just before New Zealand departed for Australia. “It’s not very often that we get to go on an overseas tour and have two weeks preparation leading into the first game. It’s normally a week.”This will be the first time that both teams will play any competitive cricket since the T20 World Cup in March. While men’s international cricket resumed two months ago with West Indies touring England, this marks the first occasion of a top women’s series taking place since the coronavirus-induced pause in world cricket.”We’re really excited to be spending time as a wider group of 17 players… as we’ve been stuck indoors for the last couple of months,” Devine said. “We now have to be at our best to beat the Australian side in Australia.”Australia are the current holders of the T20 World Cup, but Devine put the sides on the same page, with neither having played competitive cricket in the recent past.”Though the lockdown has been different on either side of the Tasman [Sea], none of us have played cricket for quite a while,” Devine said. “So I think it’s a really nice opportunity for us to go out there and hit the Aussies hard.”Australia have dominated bilateral ODI contests against New Zealand over the last two decades, with New Zealand having last won the Rose Bowl (the trophy for ODI series between the two teams) in 1999.”The aim is to certainly to bring back the Rose Bowl,” Devine said. “It’s been close to 20 years now [since] we’ve had it on our side of the Tasman, so that’s going to be a massive motivation for us to go out there and pinch the Rose Bowl back.”

Bid incoming: Man Utd eye midfield sensation who’s as good as Mainoo

Manchester United’s midfield has been a problem area for years, with only a handful of players living up to their expectations.

Since the arrival of Erik ten Hag, he’s tried to bolster the middle of the field, signing the likes of Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Mason Mount and even Sofyan Amrabat on loan.

Casemiro

However, none of them have truly impressed – Mount notably scoring just once all season – hence why Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to reinforce the position this summer.

Man Utd’s search for a new midfielder

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Man United are plotting a new move for Joao Neves.

Benfica already received an offer from the Red Devils for their midfielder, £51.1m, which was swiftly rejected.

However, they’re set to return with a higher offer of £64m, which could rise to £72.4m with add-ons.

That said, there are a few factors that could make this deal complicated, with Manchester City also keen and Benfica looking to hand him a new contract with a release clause of £128m attached. At the moment it currently stands at €120m (£102m).

Therefore, United will be keen to get the deal done as soon as possible, especially considering he’s just as talented as Kobbie Mainoo.

Why Joao Neves would be a fantastic signing

When a young player breaks onto the scene with such quality, they’re often overhyped, but that’s certainly not the case for Neves or Mainoo.

Both midfielders enjoyed their first major breakthrough campaign last season, and by the end of it, they became key players in the side.

The Portuguese gem started 27 Liga Portugal games while the England international made 24 Premier League starts, both in the double pivot of a 4-2-3-1.

But what exactly makes them so special? And why is Neves just as talented as Mainoo?

Well, first and foremost, the duo are both 19 years of age, yet they play with the confidence and maturity of an elite player ten years their senior, with no occasion affecting them thus far. The very fact Mainoo scored in the FA Cup final says a lot.

Furthermore, as you can see from the stats, their profiles are incredibly complete, boasting technical class and defensive dominance, which is why Neves in particular has been tipped to develop into “one of the best CMs” in the world by football analyst Ben Mattinson.

One of their biggest attributes is how composed they are in possession, often retaining the ball well and being press-resistant, as shown by how few times they lose possession, as well as their pass accuracy and successful dribbles.

On the other hand, they’re also extremely tenacious players who work incredibly hard off the ball, whether that’s winning their individual battles, leading the press, or covering ground with ease.

Although they can both play in numerous roles, including slightly deeper, Neves and Mainoo are at their best in a box-to-box role, where they can dominate the game all over the field.

However, what’s absolutely crazy is the standard and consistency that they’re showing at such a young age and the fact that they are already so important to their clubs.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that Ratcliffe wants to sign Neves this summer, as alongside Mainoo, United would have a midfield to dominate for years to come.

Clement could sign Kris Boyd 2.0 at Rangers in £5m machine

It is no secret that Glasgow Rangers desperately require a proper out-and-out goalscorer if they are to return to the top of Scottish football.

Many have arrived in Glasgow with the weight of expectation thrust upon them, failing to really hit the ground running at Ibrox.

Names such as Cedric Itten, Antonio Colak and, more recently, Cyriel Dessers have all failed to really emerge as players who could regularly score 30 plus goals a season.

Cyriel Dessers

Yes, Colak and Dessers may have netted 18 and 22 goals respectively during their single seasons at the Light Blues, but what Philippe Clement needs is someone in the shape of Kris Boyd.

The former Scotland international may not have been the most agile, or quickest, or even the strongest, yet once the ball dropped to his feet in the box, there was only one outcome. Goal.

Kris Boyd’s Rangers statistics

The striker had begun to make a name for himself during the embryonic stages of his career at Kilmarnock.

Making his debut in the final game of the 2000/01 season – replacing a certain Ally McCoist no less – Boyd came to prominence over the next four and a half seasons, scoring 67 goals for the Ayrshire side, emerging as one of the most prolific strikers in the country.

Midway through the 2005/06 campaign, the Gers were struggling in what was to be Alex McLeish’s final year at the helm of the club.

That December, he managed to secure the services of Boyd from Kilmarnock, and he would go on to repay every single penny over the next four years.

A hat-trick on his debut was an ominous sign as he finished the second half of the season with 20 goals for the Light Blues, and it looked as though the club finally had a Scottish heir to Super Ally.

Despite not always being a regular in Walter Smith’s starting XI, Boyd ended his first spell at the club having scored 127 goals in just 190 appearances, departing for Middlesbrough in 2010.

Since he left, Rangers haven’t had a Scottish striker like him. Could this be about to change in the coming weeks? Clement is reportedly keen on a player who was recently called up to represent Scotland at the 2024 European Championships.

Rangers are interested in a Scottish striker this summer

According to the Daily Record last week, Rangers are showing some interest in signing Bristol City striker Tommy Conway and will make an offer for the striker should he run down the final 12 months of his contract.

The Light Blues could sign him on a pre-contract in January as talks over a new deal have failed to come to anything in recent weeks.

Tommy Conway for Bristol City.

The Bristol Post also states that the club could even listen to offers for him this summer as they look to secure a decent fee for the youngster. This could give Clement plenty of incentive to strike a deal with the centre-forward.

Pundit Tom Sandy believes that City should be looking at around £5m in order to sell him this summer, which could be a slight problem for Rangers unless they sell a few players.

Rangers can repeat Cantwell masterclass by signing "clinical" target

Rangers could bolster their attack with move for a Scottish striker

ByRoss Kilvington Jun 15, 2024

Due to Lyndon Dykes suffering a major injury prior to the competition, Conway was called up by Steve Clarke to link up with the national side in Germany, but he failed to make an appearance off the bench against the host nation in the 5-1 thrashing.

Could the club potentially sign Boyd 2.0 if they manage to lure Conway north of the border? Only time will tell.

Tommy Conway’s season in numbers

Conway broke onto the scene during the 2022/23 campaign, scoring nine Championship goals for City in 34 appearances, adding another three in the EFL Cup.

This appeared to be the catalyst for the 21-year-old to take his game to the next level, as he was superb throughout last season.

Another ten goals in the English second tier was impressive, yet it was his displays against West Ham United in the FA Cup that got tongues wagging regarding his performances.

Tommy Conway celebrates for Bristol City.

Statman Dave lauded the striker as “clinical” after he scored the winner to send City through at the Hammers' expense.

Not only does he have a keen eye for goal, but Conway is also excellent at distributing the ball, a trait not often associated with strikers of his style. Indeed, when compared to his positional peers in the men’s next 14 competitions, Conway ranks in the top 1% for pass success rate (82.2%) per 90, ensuring that he often brings others into play with his vision and passing abilities.

He was lauded as being a “gifted boy” by Steve Evans in 2023, and it is clear that Conway has a bright future ahead, especially considering the teams who are looking to sign him this summer.

Among his teammates in the Championship, the Scot ranked first for goals and assists (11), along with ranking first for shots on target per game (0.7) and second for scoring frequency (a goal every 230 minutes), showcasing his abilities in front of goal last term.

He certainly isn’t the finished article, but Clement is aiming to sign players who have a massive capacity to improve following a move to Ibrox.

The likes of Jefte and Oscar Cortes – two summer signings – are still raw and have plenty to learn, but under the Belgian’s leadership, they could develop into players who could make the Light Blues a stunning profit in the future.

Playing in a league where he could score plenty of goals will do wonders for his confidence and could see the Gers finally land their heir to Boyd.

£7m duo sign, Tavernier & Goldson sold: Rangers' dream XI for 2024/25

Rangers could look very different next season compared to last

ByRoss Kilvington Jun 16, 2024

Clement can either make an offer this summer in a bid to land him, or take a risk and wait until January, when the player can sign a pre-contract agreement.

Whatever happens, Conway is a striker who is constantly improving and if Rangers don’t sign him, it could be another talent who slips through the net.

How Brendon McCullum used the Last Dance to spur Trinbago Knight Riders

Sikandar Raza says the coach challenged the side by saying they had “a lot in common with Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls”

Mohammad Isam and Deivarayan Muthu12-Sep-2020Head coach Brendon McCullum impressed upon the Trinbago Knight Riders the way to build a T20 dynasty by showing them clips from the , the mini documentary series about how Michael Jordan ensured the Chicago Bulls won six NBA titles in the 1990s. The Knight Riders went on to win all their 12 matches in CPL 2020, including a dominating eight-wicket win in the final against the St Lucia Zouks. This was the Knight Riders’ fourth CPL title in the last six editions, and as McCullum rightly envisioned, this indeed is becoming a dynasty. Both Dwayne and Darren Bravo have been involved in all four triumphs. Anderson Phillip, Colin Munro and Khary Pierre have won it thrice, while Amir Jangoo, Fawad Ahmed, Ali Khan and Sunil Narine are among those who have been on the winning side twice.McCullum and Nikita Miller have won it twice as a player and now as head coach and spin-bowling coach respectively, while Kevon Cooper has won it thrice as a player and now as the seam-bowling coach.ALSO READ: Decoding Trinbago Knight Riders’ CPL 2020 dominanceThe continuity within the squad has certainly helped them ease to a fourth title, but the additions of Kieron Pollard and Lendl Simmons in 2019 and then Pravin Tambe and Sikandar Raza this year have also made a difference. Pollard was adjudged Player of the Tournament, while Simmons was the Player of the Final. The 48-year-old Tambe bowled economically in his three appearances while Raza finished with seven wickets at an average of 15.71.According to Raza, McCullum laid down a new marker for the Knight Riders from the very beginning. “It started with one game at a time,” Raza told ESPNcricinfo. “We won the first one. We put our focus on the second one. Baz [McCullum] challenged all of us. He wanted to create a dynasty out of this TKR team by telling us that this team has a lot in common with Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls.”He showed us clips of the . He wanted to challenge us to write some sort of history, something that hasn’t been achieved before. The idea came from Baz. We all bought into this. One game led to another, and another, and we won twelve out of twelve.”Raza rated the Knight Riders right up there among the best T20 sides in the world, thanks to the presence of some of the biggest names in franchise cricket. He also said that McCullum gave him a clear role in the team, which helped him prepare accordingly.”Among all the T20 sides I have been part of, I would most certainly rate this TKR side as the best one going around. It was exciting hitting the nets with Polly [Pollard] and Bravo. These guys will just tee off. I will even add Sunny [Narine] , Lendl and Darren Bravo. These guys hit a long ball as well.”It was important to have that chat with Baz, to basically have an understanding of my role, what’s expected and train accordingly. Once you have these chats and the role is clear, then training becomes a lot clearer. The takeaway was basically how best I can improve my game with what I have. Polly, Bravo, Lendl and Colin Munro were great guys to talk to.”Getty ImagesRaza’s wickets of left-handers Kyle Mayers and Corey Anderson in the game against the Barbados Tridents came in the slog overs, while his figures of 3 for 15 against the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots were his best performance in the competition.”With the TKR, one thing that I understood was that it’s the culture we have,” he said. “We didn’t care if we were bowling the first or the last over. Once you are asked to get the job done, you do it the best you can. If it works, it works. If it doesn’t work, it’s okay. You will come back and be asked to do a better job. If you sulk, it will have a ripple effect on your batting and fielding.”So if you are asked to bowl in the later stages… we have worked hard, we are clear in our plans and we try to execute our skills the best way we can. I thought every over I bowled in the Caribbean was a death over, so there wasn’t much of a change. I had to bowl my best balls, that’s all.”Raza said that the prolonged preparatory phase also gave him a chance to work on his new variations, including an arm-ball that swings in the air. “If you are not evolving as a cricketer consistently, I think you are missing out. So, yes, I have developed a ball that swings in the air. I bowled a couple of variations on my last Bangladesh tour as well, which I felt were okay but they were still raw.”We had a lot of training time here and we bowled a lot with Nikita Miller. We bounced off the idea with the back-of-the-hand and the leggie going the other way. Hopefully, I will manage to bowl those deliveries next time I play for Zimbabwe or in one of those leagues.”Raza, though, could have missed out on being part of the Knight Riders had it not been for their CEO Venky Mysore’s intervention. Raza’s arrival to Trinidad had become a bit of concern due to limited flight options, and he had to go through six transits to reach his destination.”Harare to Trinidad was a long journey but the credit goes to Venky sir. There was a time when it looked like I wasn’t going to make it to the CPL. They basically asked the TKR to sign a replacement, but Venky sir said ‘No, no, no, we will get our boy’.”To tell you the truth, he made sure I get there. The journey was Harare-Addis Ababa-Dubai-Amsterdam-Paris-Fort de France-Martinique-Barbados-TKR. As much as it was tough, now that I look back, it was all worth it.”

Jordan Thompson stars with bat and ball as Yorkshire close in

Yorkshire are closing in on a resounding Bob Willis Trophy victory over Leicestershire at Emerald Headingley, but it will not be enough for them to reach the Lord’s final later this month. The White Rose county’s fate was sealed just before tea on day three when they failed to reach 400 in their first-innings reply to Leicestershire’s 124 – bowled out for 252. They needed to post 400 in order to give themselves a chance to reach 90 points in the North Group, a mark that is likely to secure a place at Lord’s.Leicestershire then closed on 78 for 5 from 26 second-innings overs (16 were lost at the end of the day to bad light), and victory here could still see the hosts top the North table. But the Lord’s finalists will be Essex from the South and either Worcestershire or Somerset, who are locked in battle at New Road, from the Central.Yorkshire’s bid for 400 and a 24-point haul was undermined by collapses at either end of their first innings in overcast and bowler-friendly conditions. They started day three on 36 for 2 and quickly slipped to 46 for 4 as Will Fraine and Tom Loten played loosely at left-arm quick Dieter Klein and were caught at mid-on and behind respectively. But Harry Brook, Jonny Tattersall and standout performer Jordan Thompson – he later claimed three wickets – all hit half-centuries and fashioned a recovery either side of lunch which raised hopes again.Brook, particularly fluent on the way to 53 – an on-drive against Ben Mike will not be forgotten in a hurry – shared 75 with Tattersall before lunch. Tattersall later added 116 with sixth-wicket partner Thompson, helping to secure a first batting point and taking them towards a second. However, when the previously wayward seamer Mike found his range and uprooted wicketkeeper Tattersall’s off-stump for 71, that left Yorkshire at 237 for 6 in the 65th over of their innings and sparked a damaging flurry of wickets. The hosts lost their last five for 15 runs in only 29 balls, with Thompson lbw for 62 as one of three wickets for offspinner Arron Lilley, who also removed Matthew Fisher and Duanne Olivier. When a diving Sam Evans brilliantly caught Ben Coad at point off Mike in the 69th over, that ended Yorkshire’s silverware hopes.Yorkshire can point to an encouraging campaign that has seen the emergence of young players such as allrounder Thompson, who posted his second half-century in five games and took his tally of wickets to 13. But they will want to strengthen that view with a third win – added to two draws – that should see them top the North given pre-game leaders Derbyshire’s struggles against Lancashire at Liverpool. And, after tea, they made the ideal start to Leicestershire’s second innings when Coad trapped Sam Evans lbw to leave the score at 4 for 1 in the third over.Thompson’s seamers then accounted for three wickets in as many overs as Leicestershire toppled to 47 for four in the 18th. Hassan Azad and Harry Dearden were both caught behind in the 14th, the former down leg-side, as the score fell to 35 for 3. Then, in the 18th, on-loan Essex batsman Rishi Patel was caught at cover by Jack Shutt.Fisher also struck to get Harry Swindells caught behind in the 22nd over. There was no play beyond 5.40pm, and Colin Ackermann and Lilley will begin day four on 23 and 10 respectively.Yorkshire’s players, meanwhile, wore black armbands following the death of director of cricket Martyn Moxon’s mother on Monday.

Sky Sports: Rangers have "concrete" interest in signing "great" new 20 y/o

Having already signed Oscar Cortes, Rangers now reportedly have a "concrete" interest in signing another young winger who could only add to the firepower in Philippe Clement's squad.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers have enjoyed a busy summer so far, welcoming both Jefte and Cortes to begin a summer overhaul following the departures of John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Jon McLaughlin and others.

Clement expressed his delight at welcoming Cortes back after an initial loan spell last season, telling the official Rangers website:

"I am really pleased to have Oscar coming back. He was a big asset to the squad when he came to the club and he showed the qualities that attracted him to us. Oscar suffered a setback, but he has worked tirelessly during his recovery and I am sure all of the fans are looking forward to seeing him again next season.”

Rangers very likely to sign "terrific" player for free; talks already held

This comes as a boost to Philippe Clement.

ByTom Cunningham Jun 5, 2024

Now, the Belgian could welcome another young winger. According to Sky Sports' Florian Plettenberg, Rangers have a "concrete" interest in signing Yusuf Kabadayi this summer. The Gers are joined by Lecce and St Pauli in their interest in the Bayern Munich gem but will hope to eventually win the race to add to Clement's attack.

Still just 20 years old, Kabadayi spent last season on loan in the 2.Bundesliga at Schalke and could now step up to the top flight, be that in Italy, Germany or Scotland.

"Great" Kabadayi can form Cortes partnership

A left-winger, who can also play through the middle and on the right-hand side, Kabadayi could form a partnership with Cortes with a move to Rangers this summer. Given how young both players are too, the ceiling could be fairly endless if Clement gets things right. The Belgian has clearly set his sights on more than just next season, given the focus on young players.

After he managed five goals in all competitions last season, Schalke will likely be disappointed to have been outpriced of a move for Kabadayi, who was at the centre of former sporting director Andre Hechelmann's praise when he arrived.

Hechelmann told the official club website: “We are pleased that our efforts to sign Yusuf have been rewarded and that he could fulfill his wish of joining us. As a talented youth international with lots of quality and a great attitude, he will fit perfectly with our philosophy."

That attitude and quality could now benefit Rangers rather than the German club, as the Gers begin to circle around yet another young talent this summer.

Man Utd struck gold on free signing who’s now worth more than Fernandes

Despite the underwhelming performance of the 2023/24 campaign, the Manchester United squad still holds some extreme value.

Yet, if you asked the United fanbase who their most valuable player is, the common answer would be Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese magnifico is simply priceless in the eyes of the Red Devils faithful, which is no surprise considering he’s the best goal scorer and creator in the squad.

Nonetheless, there’s a current United star who’s now become even more valuable than Fernandes, even though he cost the club nothing as a young boy.

Kobbie Mainoo’s rise to success

Prior to last season, Kobbie Mainoo was a name that the Man United faithful were beginning to get familiar with, having seen glimpses of his quality against Charlton Athletic and Reading in the EFL Cup.

After impressing Erik ten Hag, the midfielder was included in United’s pre-season tour, where he initially played against Arsenal before picking up a serious ankle injury.

Manchester United midfielder Mainoo.

This kept him out of action until November when he made his first start in the Premier League against Everton alongside Scott McTominay in a 4-2-3-1.

After just his first action in the game, he looked completely unfazed by the occasion, and he starred throughout the game, even winning the Player of the Match award, which was just the start of his incredible rise to the very top.

Kobbie Mainoo’s transfer value in 2024

Since his debut, Mainoo hasn’t gone on to become just a frequent starter for the Red Devils, but he’s now regarded as a key player in the side.

The 19-year-old has become simply irreplaceable, showcasing his complete attributes week in, week out over his 32 appearances.

Considering he’s been deployed in a double pivot all season, his ability to impact the game in the final third has been phenomenal, scoring five goals and provided three assists, which proves that he’s a “world-class” talent, as dubbed by football creator Liam Canning.

One of those goals was the winner against Manchester City in the FA Cup, where he showed incredible composure to slot the ball home via a first-time finish, which proves he’s made for the big occasion.

Due to his rapid rise, Mainoo has quickly become one of United’s most valuable assets in the entire squad, with an estimated worth of £51m.

This is now even more than Fernandes, whose estimated value currently sits at £43m, which is an £8m difference that’s only set to increase as Mainoo continues to thrive.

Furthermore, this makes the England international the third-most valuable player to have graduated from the United academy, only behind Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.

His £51m valuation also means that he’s the Red Devils midfielder with the highest worth, beating the likes of Fernandes and McTominay.

Fortunately for the new United owners, Mainoo’s value is only set to skyrocket after the European Championships, considering he’ll inevitably play a part for England this summer, not that they’d even begin to consider selling him.

Overall, Mainoo has been truly fantastic this season, and United absolutely hit the jackpot on the youngster. Luckily for them, he’s only going to get even better.

Arsenal hold fresh agent talks as they eye £34 million Sesko alternative

The Gunners could get him for even cheaper than Sesko’s £55m release clause.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 7, 2024

Arsenal pushed Man City all the way to the final day, but fell just short despite accumulating 89 points and scoring 91 top-flight goals. Kai Havertz impressed in a makeshift forward role under Mikel Arteta, chipping in with 13 goals and seven assists over 37 league appearances.

However, despite the German's form, it is believed Arteta personally wants to sign a young Havertz partner for Arsenal this summer, and one who can help to lead the line.

A new striker to alternate with the former Bayer Leverkusen starlet is on the agenda, and one name who won't stop being mentioned in tandem with Arsenal is RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko.

The 6 foot 5 centre-forward scored 18 goals in all competitions, and the £55 million release clause in his contract is tempting elite clubs across Europe. Arsenal chiefs are said to be confident Sesko will choose to join, though, after making him a proposal behind the scenes (TEAMtalk).

Sesko makes it clear that he wants to join Arsenal

According to HITC, Sesko has made it clear via intermediaries that he wants to join Arsenal despite serious interest from Man United, Paris-Saint Germain and Chelsea among others.

Chelsea, in particular, are working hard to sway the 21-year-old, but it is the Emirates Stadium that stands out as his preferred destination as things stand. As well as his proficiency in front of goal, Sesko stands out for his physical attributes, while he possesses top speed for such a tall player.

"It was very exciting to see such a tall player with such good coordination, good speed, not as fast as he is today, and a very soft touch on the ball. That impressed me enormously," said his agent, Elvis Basanovic, to AS in 2021.

"I think he is a very complete forward who can score with his head, with his right foot, with his left foot, inside the area, from medium distance, after dribbling or completing a collective action. He is very fast, in some games he reaches a speed of over 36km/h which makes him one of the fastest forwards in the world.

"But it is also important to say that he is only 18 years old and is just beginning his career. That is why he must keep his feet on the ground, concentrate and continue working hard every day for his development. I don't want to let him think that he already did something in his career. That would be very bad."
