First part of CSA's forensic audit expected by Friday

The fate of the suspended CEO Thabang Moroe could hinge on the findings of the audit

Cricket South Africa is expecting the first part of the forensic audit into its affairs by Friday, which may determine whether suspended CEO Thabang Moroe will face disciplinary charges over allegations of misconduct. CSA President Chris Nenzani confirmed that Moroe’s suspension in December 2019 was directly linked to the audit and promised the organisation had made a “commitment” to providing more clarity in the coming weeks.Moroe was the seventh member of staff to be put on paid leave during CSA’s administrative unraveling late last year, and all the other cases have either been concluded or progressed significantly. Of those, four members of staff have been dismissed including Clive Eksteen, the former head of sales and sponsor relations, who announced earlier on Tuesday that he would take his case to the country’s labour dispute resolution body, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).In a detailed statement, Eksteen claimed he had been charged on five counts and found guilty of one, which related to a sponsorship deal between a multinational company and CSA. He appealed the guilty verdict but lost, and on Saturday, CSA said he had been dismissed as a result of “transgressions of a serious nature.” Eksteen denied that the charge he had been found guilty of was a serious one.”One charge cannot properly be described as “transgressions”, yet CSA chose to do so. The perception that has been created, and the perception, which is still prevalent, is that I was in some way involved in “suspicious” dealings, and therefore subject to an investigation along with other CSA Officials. Nothing could be further from the truth,” his statement read. While Nenzani conceded that Eksteen’s statement was “to some extent factual”, he would not go into details on it’s “merits or demerits”, because the matter is unresolved.Similarly, Nenzani was scant on the details of Moroe’s case save to say that CSA wants to ensure procedural correctness. He explained that when Moroe was suspended, initially by telephone call and then through a letter, it was made clear to Moroe that the finalisation of the audit would be used to gather information to formulate any charges against him. Nenzani indicated Moroe would have known that he was still suspended when Moroe unsuccessfully attempted to return to work last week. “His suspension letter is very clear that his suspension is linked to the finalisation of the forensic audit,” Nenzani said. The audit will also look into the decision-making of the board and Nenzani described the process of starting it as “very elaborate”. As a result, the audit did not start until March, almost three months after Moroe was suspended. Nenzani acknowledged the frustrations that delay has caused among stakeholders including the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), which accused the CSA board of deliberate delaying tactics in dealing with Moroe.”I’m sure SACA would appreciate that you cannot be cavalier in how you address these matters because if you do so, and you rush things and you miss a few steps, you are exposing yourself to a challenge of procedural unfairness,” Nenzani said. “The delay is not to the benefit of CSA, it’s not to the benefit of our supporters and it is not to the benefit if the players that SACA represents. We are making a commitment that in the coming weeks, there is going to be a clear process going forward. We understand the unhappiness… but very few people would have wanted us to flout process.”To that end, Nenzani also provided an assurance that he would step down at the conclusion of his term in September. Nenzani is currently serving his second term, which was extended by a year in 2019, with the aim of stabilising CSA through difficult financial times. Reflecting on his seven years in office, Nenzani said there were three things he would have done differently beginning with looking at “transformation on a radical scale”. CSA was sanctioned by the country’s sports’ ministry in 2016 for the slow pace of representational change but has since been praised for its progress.Nenzani would also have wanted CSA to have acted differently in “the manner in which we engage and communicate.” Though he did not elaborate, CSA’s disputes with SACA over the years, including most recently over a proposed domestic restructure, is one example. Most tellingly, perhaps, Nenzani said that with hindsight, he should not have had an extra year added to his second term. “Looking back, I should not have agreed,” he said. “It is because of how I view leadership. Election to a position is an obligation to serve the people who elect you and therefore when they said please continue, you subject yourself to that directive.”In the last year, CSA has dealt with numerous on and off-field issues including a disappointing World Cup campaign and the tumble of the Test team down the rankings, an administrative overhaul, the loss of major sponsor Standard Bank, and repeated calls for the board to step down. The board’s AGM is set for September 5, when Nenzani and two other directors’ terms end.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Neymar has been out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury since October last year and it is not yet known when he will be back in action. THE BIGGER PICTURE

Brazil have disappointed in World Cup qualifying so far without Neymar as they sit in fourth place and eight points behind leaders Argentina. According to Real Madrid star Rodrygo, the Selecao would be in better shape if the 32-year-old were in the side as he fears for their hopes at the 2026 tournament.

  • WHAT RODRYGO SAID

Rodrygo said to : "I have no words. Everyone can see it, it's clear how much he's missed. He's our star, our best player. To win a World Cup, everyone has to be well to help him. If he's well, which is what we're hoping for, he's in the final stages of his recovery. We want him back as soon as possible. I always exchange messages with him, he's now returning to training with the group. He's a great partner. I feel sad when I see someone talking badly about him, because of the person he is. £55 million star’s agents contact Chelsea this week with Maresca bid likely

A £55 million player's representatives have contacted Chelsea chiefs in the last few days, as momentum builds over Enzo Maresca's side bidding for him this summer.

Maresca makes Chelsea transfer requests as arrival confirmed

The Italian was officially confirmed as Mauricio Pochettino's replacement on Monday, with a new era now beginning at Stamford Bridge after co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart chose Maresca as their standout managerial candidate.

The former Man City coach, who worked under Pep Guardiola as part of his backroom staff, reportedly beat the likes of Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna and Brentford's Thomas Frank in the race to become Chelsea's new manager.

Maresca guided Leicester City to automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking with Leicester City last season, winning the Championship title in the process, and his success at the King Power has earned him the step-up to Stamford Bridge.

The 44-year-old, according to some reports, has already made specific transfer requests behind the scenes. Maresca has held discussions with Chelsea chiefs over the summer window, and it is believed he's floated some desired signings.

Maresca is a real fan of Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, alongside other stars, with defender Tosin Adarabioyo set to become Chelsea's first signing under their new manager on a Bosman deal from Fulham.

The west Londoners are chasing a prolific new forward this summer, and one who can lead Maresca's front line to provide that extra cutting edge. Chelsea were heavily reliant on Cole Palmer last term, and while Nicolas Jackson showed bags of potential, there are still concerns as to whether he is ready to be the vocal point of their attack.

They've been heavily linked with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, coming after the Slovenia international netted 18 goals in all competitions over 2023/2024.

Sesko's agents contact Chelsea this week with Maresca bid likely

As per TEAMtalk, Sesko's agents have contacted Chelsea in the last few days as momentum builds for a bid being placed.

His release clause stands at a tempting £55 million, which is far less than the reported clauses in both Victor Osimhen's (£115m) or Viktor Gyokeres' (£86m) contracts, and that may well shoot Sesko up Maresca's list of transfer priorities.

However, Chelsea will have to compete with London rivals Arsenal for the 6ft 5 star's signature, as Emirates Stadium insiders believe they're one quality striker away from winning the Premier League and are seriously interested in Sesko as well.

Mikel Arteta's side are still thought to be in a strong position to sign the centre-forward, with it clear the two clubs are set to do battle for him.

David Payne five-for has Glamorgan on the ropes

Hosts 23 without loss in second innings, still trailing Gloucestershire by 42 runs

ECB Reporters Network17-Aug-2020A five-wicket haul by David Payne put Glamorgan into rescue mode ahead of the final day of their Bob Willis Trophy match against Gloucestershire in Cardiff.Glamorgan, in their second innings after bowling Gloucestershire out for 181 in their first, will resume on 23 for 0, a deficit of 42 runs, on Tuesday.Payne, Gloucestershire’s left-arm seamer, again proved a nemesis when he produced a superb spell in the morning session to dismiss the home team for a modest first-innings total of 116 in 59.3 overs. The 29-year-old Payne, who ended with figures of 17-7-31-5, took four of the five wickets to fall after Glamorgan had resumed on 80 for 5, has a formidable record against the neighbours across the Severn Bridge, having taken 58 wickets in nine years against them in all formats. He was well supported by the other seamers, notably Josh Shaw, the former Yorkshire paceman who ended with 3 for 13 from his 9.3 overs.Dan Douthwaite was the only Glamorgan batsman to withstand the visitors’ accurate attack, and after defending well, opened up towards the end of the innings to score an unbeaten 30.Gloucestershire also struggled at the start of their innings, losing Chis Dent in the second over, when he feathered a catch to the wicketkeeper, although he clearly felt the ball had struck his arm as he trudged back to the pavilion. His opening partner Ben Charlesworth, experienced a torrid time against the new ball and after padding up to numerous deliveries that were close to the off stump, the tactic brought about his downfall, when he padded up to Graham Wagg and was out leg before – after facing 67 balls for his eight runs.Graham van Buuren, meanwhile, played every ball on its merit and shared a useful partnership with Tom Lace, who was making his Gloucestershire debut after signing from Middlesex. They put on 43, before van Buuren, who had scored 32, was bowled playing inside a delivery from Timm van der Gugten. With the visitors’ score on 89 for 3, a heavy shower curtailed play, and an early tea was taken with Lace on 37 and George Hankins 3.Gloucestershire lost a fourth wicket soon after the lengthy interval, when Hankins was caught at second slip by Nick Selman off Wagg, who had returned to the attack in place of van der Gugten, who had left the field with a dislocated finger.Lace and Ryan Higgins had begun to look comfortable and on course to lead their side to a first-innings lead when Wagg struck again to remove the former, caught low down by keeper Cooke, with the scores level.Gareth Roderick departed soon afterwards, caught behind swinging wildly to a wide Douthwaite delivery outside off-stump.Rotating the three pace bowlers in van der Gugten’s absence, Glamorgan turned to Marchant de Lange, who duly delivered to remove George Scott when he edged behind to a rising delivery.Higgins, amid flurry of heaves off spinner Kieran Bull, was caught at deep square leg by de Lange as the visitors lost their eighth wicket on 173, and their ninth on 181, when Shaw was held low down at slip by Selman off de Lange. The innings concluded when Payne was caught by Bull from his own bowling, the visitors all out for 181, a lead of 65.Glamorgan had 14 overs to face in the final session, and openers Selman and Charlie Hemphrey guided them to the close.

Ten Hag could drop Eriksen to unleash Man Utd’s "physical monster"

It has been a tough season for Manchester United in 2023/24. With just four games to go, including an FA Cup final against Manchester City, United will be hoping to end on a high. They have been on a poor run of form, which has seen them win just one win in eight games, plus the win on penalties in the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry.

The Red Devils currently sit in eighth in the Premier League on 54 points. There is a three-point gap between them and the final Europa League spot, and the Conference League spot, currently occupied by Newcastle and Chelsea respectively, who are both on 57 points.

However, the underlying numbers are much worse than that. According to Understat, United’s expected points total is just 42.49 points, which would place them 14th in the Premier League table.

Manchester United players including Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Of course, it has not been an easy season for Erik ten Hag, largely due to the sheer amount of injuries he has had to handle. The Dutchman’s side has had an unfortunate 60 cases of injury or illness this season, with key players including Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw sidelined for most of the campaign.

However, Ten Hag does have an important player set to return from injury for Arsenal’s trip to Old Trafford on Sunday, which could see one of his signings from his first season in charge dropped from the side.

Christian Eriksen's season in numbers

The man in question here is Denmark international Christian Eriksen, who has found himself in the side in recent weeks, despite a season in which he has only played fleeting minutes for United.

The former Tottenham midfielder has featured just 25 times in all competitions this term, with 19 of those coming in the Premier League. In total, Eriksen has played 1,410 minutes in all competitions, which equates to only 15 full 90 minutes, scoring once and registering two assists along the way.

In his debut year at Old Trafford, Eriksen was a vital player until January, when he suffered an injury in the FA Cup which kept him out until April. Prior to that injury, the 32-year-old had been a key cog in a midfield made up of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes.

However, he has struggled with fitness this season, and at times can struggle to complete a full game if he plays from the start. Not only that, the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo has pushed Eriksen further down the pecking order, meaning there have been even fewer opportunities for the Dane.

Couple that with a hopeless performance against Palace, which was awarded a 1/10 rating by MEN's Samuel Luckhurst and it would not be a shock if he comes out of the team.

Another player, who has had a key role this season under Ten Hag, could well slot into the side along with Mainoo and Fernandes against Arsenal, which would see Eriksen drop the bench against Arsenal.

The man to replace Christian Eriksen

Scotland international Scott McTominay has become a key player under Ten Hag in 2023/24, which has perhaps been surprising to many fans, given he nearly left last summer. West Ham were linked with a £45m move for the midfielder, as per The Telegraph.

McTominay has scored ten goals in all competitions, which is actually United’s third most in the entire squad; only Fernandes with 15 and summer signing Rasmus Hojlund with 14 have scored more times than the Scot.

Scott McTominay

Indeed, the seven goals McTominay has in the Premier League is his best tally since making his debut under Jose Mourinho in the 2016/17 campaign.

Stats from Transfermarkt

McTominay’s effectiveness as a box-crashing, all-phase number eight in midfield has been clear to see this season. His physicality and power to get on the end of crosses has been a key way United have found the back of the net this season, and it has bailed them out on multiple occasions, earning them crucial points when a draw or defeat seemed likely.

Not only has this been noticed by Ten Hag, who has made plenty of use of McTominay’s physicality and box-crashing ability, but former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has noted it in the past.

In 2020, the United legend said that the 27-year-old is “a physical monster”, before acknowledging the fact that McTominay “never shirks anything and he gets his rewards”. This has certainly been the case this season.

It could well be the case that Ten Hag decides to drop Eriksen in favour of McTominay on Sunday. Given his knack for scoring clutch goals, plus his physicality against the likes of Declan Rice and Thomas Partey, he could well be a difference-maker as United look to spoil Arsenal’s title challenge.

Heather Knight 'pretty gutted' at 2021 Women's World Cup postponement

England captain Heather Knight has admitted she feels “pretty gutted” about the ICC’s decision to postpone the Women’s World Cup from 2021 to 2022, and raised fears that boards will use it as “an excuse… to put women’s cricket on the back burner”.The ICC made the decision on Friday, citing the need to maintain the “integrity of the tournament” by ensuring that all teams had sufficient preparation.”We have taken the decision to move the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup to give players from every competing nation, the best opportunity to be ready for the world’s biggest stage and there is still a global qualifier to complete to decide the final three teams,” Manu Sawhney, the ICC’s chief executive, said.”Moving the event by 12 months gives all competing teams the chance to play a sufficient level of cricket ahead of both the qualification event and leading into a Cricket World Cup so the integrity of the tournament is maintained.”ALSO READ: Why the Women’s World Cup was postponedBut Knight expressed her fears that boards would not give sufficient attention to women’s cricket without a world tournament to prepare for. Alyssa Healy, the Australia wicketkeeper, also expressed her frustration at the decision, which she labelled “remarkable” in response to a tweet from journalist Scott Bailey comparing the number of Covid-19 cases in New Zealand and India. Knight’s England team were back in training this week ahead of their series against South Africa, which is due to start at the end of this month. It will be the first women’s international cricket to be played since the Covid-19 pandemic took hold.

Ollie Pope set for scan after shoulder injury on fourth morning

Pope left the field holding his left shoulder, which he dislocated last summer

Ollie Pope will undergo a scan on his left shoulder on Tuesday morning after leaving the field in the second over of Pakistan’s second innings in the third Test at the Ageas Bowl.Pope, who spent three months sidelined last summer after dislocating the same shoulder playing for Surrey, slid to save a boundary off the second ball of Stuart Broad’s first over of the fourth day and left the pitch almost immediately. He stayed off the field throughout the day, with James Bracey on as a substitute fielder in his place. With the majority of England’s squad having left the biosecure bubble to play for their counties, that meant their assistant coach, Paul Collingwood, had to put on his whites to carry drinks for the rest of the day.”He’s obviously banged his shoulder again, so he will go for a scan on that, and we’ll assess from there, really,” Chris Silverwood, England’s head coach, said. “We’ll know more once he’s had a scan.”Pope’s shoulder injury last summer ruled him out of Ashes contention, though he later told that it had been a “blessing in disguise”, allowing him to take a step back from the game and make changes to his technique.

Fabrizio Romano: West Ham in talks to sign "next Kylian Mbappe" for £30m

West Ham United appear to be keen on backing new manager Julen Lopetegui in the transfer market and are now in talks to sign an exciting £30m attacker dubbed the "next Kylian Mbappe".

West Ham transfer rumours

Talking after officially joining the Hammers earlier this month, Lopetegui said that he will try to put his own stamp on things at the London Stadium.

“I feel very happy, first of all, to be able to be part of the future of this big Club. We will try to put our stamp on the Club. I feel that we have a fantastic platform. I think the last few years have been very good years to have this base, of course, but my ambition as a coach is always to be better and better, to achieve more and bigger aims and to encourage and improve the players, the team, and to compete because football is about this – to compete. We are very ambitious about this.

“I am where I want to be. I am here because I want to be here and for us it was a fantastic day when we closed our agreement here because our commitment is 100 per cent to be here. We had other opportunities but I am very happy that West Ham chose me because I chose West Ham too, so we are really happy about this."

There has already been movement ahead of the summer transfer window officially being opened, with a verbal agreement in place to sign Brazil international defender Fabricio Bruno from Flamengo in a deal that could be worth around £11.5m.

There could be soon personal issues with Bruno, though, with Wolves defender Max Kilman also linked with reuniting with Lopetegui. It isn’t just at the back where additions are wanted, though, with Fabrizio Romano sharing a promising West Ham update on Palmeiras attacker Luis Guilherme.

West Ham in £30m Luis Guilherme talks

According to the transfer expert, West Ham are in talks to sign Guilherme in a deal that could be worth £30m.

Guilherme, primarily a right-winger who can play on the left or in an attacking midfield role, has been catching the eye in Brazil over the last few years, with Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig highlighting his pace, acceleration, passing, vision, creativity, technique, ball control, agility and dribbling as very strong attributes.

The 18-year-old was even dubbed the "next Kylian Mbappe" by Football Insider back in February when it was claimed that Liverpool were looking to win the race for his services this summer.

Therefore, if West Ham secure a deal for Guilherme over the coming weeks, it could prove to be a major coup for the Irons, both in the short term and for years to come.
