James Anderson defies glum forecasts to brighten Lancashire prospects

England seamer claims five-for despite delayed start as Derbyshire succumb to 153 all out

Unlike Worcester, which pays a heavy price for its glorious proximity to the Severn, Derbyshire’s home ground can normally handle a deluge with few far-reaching effects. Last week’s downpours were exceptional, though. Spectators encouraged by a warm, drying wind to anticipate a prompt start arrived to see a huddle of Lancashire bowlers toeing dark patches of turf at the Racecourse End, exchanging shrugs and shakes of the head.No one looked less enthused at the idea of running in than James Anderson, although England’s finest fast bowler seldom looks enthused even when he is. He bent down and touched the ground with the palm of his hand, warily examining the droplets of water that attached themselves. Six weeks away from what may be his last Ashes series, by which time he will have turned 37, you can imagine what thoughts were in his mind. Having made his senior Lancashire debut here in 2001, he may well have a soft spot for this ground but he had no wish to jeopardise his summer by turning his ankle in one. Yet his captain had already determined that, if there were to be any play, Lancashire would bowl first. There was no play before lunch. Showers were forecast for later. Yet by 1.40pm the groundstaff had squeezed out enough moisture for umpires Nick Cook and Ian Blackwell to determine that even limbs as vital to the national interest as Anderson’s would be no more than normally at risk. Under an overcast sky, the air nicely humid, Derbyshire batsmen were now wishing the officials had decided on a longer delay.Opening at the City End, Anderson’s line was not perfect at the start, although twice he thought he had Luis Reece, his one-time county team-mate, caught off the glove. His appeals were well supported by keeper and slips but Blackwell was unmoved.Anderson’s new-ball partner, that other evergreen, Graham Onions, was more on the money. Billy Godleman survived a confident shout for caught behind as the ball whistled close to the outside edge but was reprieved only momentarily, edging the next one to gully with a rather loose drive. It was not the Derbyshire captain’s first mistake of the day, having earlier signed off a teamsheet that included a player he had actually left out. Despite the late start, play was under way before the error was spotted. Informed over his earpiece, umpire Cook had to halt proceedings before informing his colleague and asking Dane Vilas, Godleman’s opposite number, if he was happy with Sam Conners playing instead of Tony Palladino.Having drawn first blood in this mini-contest with Anderson, his senior by just a couple of months, Onions surged ahead. Wayne Madsen, also tempted to drive, was taken at first slip by Keaton Jennings, whose height made a difficult catch look deceptively easy. Then Tom Lace, playing across a full length swinging delivery, was leg before.Derbyshire were 14 for 3. It was the kind of fragility their followers had easily envisaged against the Division Two leaders and Anderson was not even started. Onions took a breather with 3 for 9 off six but Anderson kept going, no hint of reluctance now. Reece, after his early survival, was beaten for pace and bowled; Harvey Hosein was trapped in his crease, trying to work away a full delivery. Now Anderson did rest and, for a while, it seemed a different game. Richard Gleeson, Lancashire’s leading wicket-taker before this match, was not selected, which says something about the strength of the Red Rose’s bowling resources. Yet neither Josh Bohannon, a skiddy seamer who adds also to the depth of batting, nor Saqib Mahmood could duplicate the control exerted by the new ball pair. Alex Hughes and Matt Critchley added 62 in 14 overs and, from 24 for 5, Derbyshire went to tea at 86 for 5.All changed again, however, as Anderson returned, refreshed, immediately afterwards. The fifth ball of his new spell accounted for Critchley, caught behind jousting outside off stump; the third over saw Hughes beaten by one that clipped off stump and Logan van Beek leg before to one that clipped his pad. Suddenly, for all his earlier foreboding, Anderson had his second five-for of the season, his 17th in first-class cricket for the county.”We did well to get out there are play,” Anderson said afterwards. “It was very wet and there were a few issues with the ground but once we did get out there it was not too bad under foot.”I thought we bowled really well to start with and having had them 25 for five I felt we could have pressed home that advantage a bit more than we did.”We felt we let them off the hook a little bit. You need all four bowlers to be on it to bowl sides out and maybe we did not have that today. But we are relatively happy with where we are.”It might have been worse for Derbyshire had Leus du Plooy’s unbeaten 39 not been supported with late-order runs from 20-year-old Conners on debut and Ravi Rampaul, the last two wickets adding 62. All out for 153 hardly felt like grounds for optimism, however.More rain, perhaps torrential, is on the radar for Tuesday into Wednesday, another test for the groundstaff. The local forecast is that Lancashire may not need much playing time to register a fourth win of the season, although Reece landed a late counter-punch with the wicket of Jennings.

‘Brutal experience’ but does Cristiano Ronaldo defend enough to start? Portugal boss Roberto Martinez mulling over options ahead of Euro 2024

The “brutal experience” boasted by Cristiano Ronaldo means that Portugal boss Roberto Martinez is prepared to overlook some defensive deficiencies.

All-time great ready for 11th international tournamentFresh from hitting 50 goals for Al-NassrCoach has no concerns regarding effort or workloadWHAT HAPPENED?

With Euro 2024 fast approaching, one of the pre-tournament favourites are mulling over what role their talismanic No.7 will play. Ronaldo may be one of the best to have ever graced a football field, but he is now 39 years of age and plying his club trade in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Nassr.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT MARTINEZ SAID

He has never been the most committed to defensive work either, despite often being required to press and close from the front, and that has led some to question whether he should be starting for his country at another major competition. Martinez has said of Ronaldo working for the greater good: “It is important for us to attack and defend with 11. Cristiano has brutal experience. There is no other with this experience. He is a player who knows very well how to use space in the area and is a special finisher, a special player. Cristiano's focus, reaction to loss and defensive positions were perfect during the games we played, the last 11 games. So for me, there are no doubts, there are no worries.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo is also facing questions of whether he can handle the demands of tournament football, where the games come thick and fast, but Martinez added on an evergreen frontman that hit 50 goals across the 2023-24 campaign: “What happens with European and world tournaments that we need to evaluate every day, all games have different incidences. Cris had 51 games last season and had no problems playing all the games, he played many competitions, but the dates to club level are not the same as at the national team level. I think there is no problem, but we evaluate this in real-time and during the tournament.”

Newcastle set to step up efforts to sign defender in possible record deal

Newcastle United are reportedly set to make further efforts this month to complete the signing of an "elite" player, as they look to get a key piece of transfer business over the line.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies need new signings in the January transfer window, in order to breathe new life into their season, with Saturday's late 3-2 defeat at home to Manchester City their latest disappointing result. There are lots of players who have been touted as possible targets for Newcastle, with Kalvin Phillips perhaps the individual looking the most likely to seal a loan move to St James' Park, bringing an end to his spell at Manchester City.

VfB Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy is someone who the Magpies are believed to be looking at as a strong addition in attack, with the 27-year-old scoring a remarkable 17 goals in only 14 Bundesliga appearances so far this season and has a relatively cheap release clause.

Meanwhile, there is also a chance that Eddie Howe looks to bolster his defensive options in 2024, which is why the likes of Ousmane Diomande and Goncalo Inacio, both of whom are currently at Sporting CP, have been linked with moves to Newcastle.

Ousmane Diomande to Newcastle latest

According to a report from The Mirror, Newcastle arse set to step up their attempts to sign Ousmane Diomande, with owners PIF meaning business despite being "under the microscope" with FFP.

ousmane-diomande-transfer-news-newcastle-premier-league

"Newcastle will step up their scouting of Ousmane Diomande this month in a bid to head off expected stiff competition for the Ivory Coast defender. Diomande, 20, has shot to prominence starring this season for Sporting Lisbon, who top the Portuguese Primeira Liga. He has made 21 appearances this term in Portugal playing recently at the centre of a back three for Sporting but can also play on the right."

The report goes on to add that "Newcastle may have to break their transfer record to land the starlet after previously buying Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad for a record £58million rising to £63m, including add-ons", with Diomande "valued at £70m". With Newcastle's finances "under the microscope", however, they are expected to bid lower than that to begin with, "amid the Premier League Financial Fair Play climate."

If the Magpies could strike a deal for Diomande in 2024, it could prove to be one of their most important pieces of business in some time, given the long-term ceiling that he has as a player. The 20-year-old is already a key figure for Sporting, starting 15 Primeira Liga matches this season and completing 91.2% of his passes, and the table below outlines the positive influence he is having:

Ousmane Diomande's Primeira Liga stats this season Total
Appearances 15
Goals 1
Assists 1
Clearances per game 1.7
Tackles per game 1.5
Pass completion rate 91.2%

The young Frenchman has been hailed as an "elite" player by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who added that "you rarely see a player with such high ball-playing and pure defender skills", and Newcastle must do all they can to snap him up in January, making him a big signing for years to come.

"Happy" – Striker target gives interesting response to Celtic links

Celtic are on the hunt for a new striker, and one of their targets has left the door very much open ahead of a potential Celtic Park switch.

Celtic being pushed in Premiership title race

Though the Bhoys currently sit atop the Scottish Premiership, they could be dethroned should Rangers win their game in hand by a few goals, and there are clearly problems within Brendan Rodgers' squad. Principally, it appears that the front line needs something of a refresh.

Though they completed a loan move for Adam Idah in January, it remains to be seen whether or not Brendan Rodgers opts to make the move permanent, and with Japanese striker Kyogo Furuhashi persistently linked with a move away from Celtic Park a new striker may be needed even if the Norwich man is made permanent.

One man that they have previously been credited with an interest in is Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski, who is the Dons' top goalscorer. Originally a left-back as a youngster, the reformed frontman has been a revelation at Pittodrie. Starting all of Aberdeen's 23 Scottish Premiership this season, he has returned 13 goals and is largely responsible for keeping them out of the drop zone this campaign.

With Celtic thought to have been interested in the North Macedonian before they moved for Idah, it is thought that they would be keen to return for him in the summer, though Aberdeen will still demand that they make him the most expensive transfer between two Scottish sides (a figure that currently stands at £4.4m from when Scott Brown swapped Hibernian for Celtic Park).

Miovski flattered but determined to remain focused

Quizzed on the links, Miovski left the door open to remain in Scotland and move to Celtic, though he was quick to stress that his focus remained on his career with Aberdeen.

"I'm playing the best season of my career at Aberdeen and I'm enjoying football", he said, via Rangers Review.

"I like Scotland. It has a great passion for football. People love the club, they are with us everywhere. I like Scottish football because it is played very quickly and all the time the balls are put forward towards us strikers. The game is played with a lot of contact, but it's direct and I love seeing this much action in the penalty box.

"I am happy to be linked with clubs like Celtic, Rangers and Southampton because that means I'm making progress. I still have two years left on my contract in Aberdeen, I am focused on the club and on winning a place in Europe like last year. What the future will bring?… I don't know.

"Now I am focused only on my club and that is my goal, to be as good as possible. Aberdeen are in the top three clubs in Scotland. Celtic and Rangers are one thing, Aberdeen is another – our club signs young players for less money and gives everyone a chance."

With a third of the season left to play, there is plenty of time for Miovski to attract even bigger suitors and potentially spark a bidding war for his services come the summer transfer window, with goalscorers worth their weight in gold to any side.

Australia choose worst time to put in 'worst performance' of the World Cup

Aaron Finch admits his side were simply ‘outplayed’ by England

Osman Samiuddin at Edgbaston11-Jul-2019Australia chose the worst possible time to put in their “worst performance” of the tournament, an eight-wicket thumping not only ending their world title defence but also consigning them to a first semi-final defeat at a World Cup.In days to come the defeat might sting less, especially in light of where Australia’s ODI form has been over the last year, but Aaron Finch could not hide his disappointment.WATCH on Hotstar (India only) – Highlights of England’s win over Australia”In terms of where we were 12 months ago, obviously I think we have made a huge amount of progress,” he said. “Really proud of everyone involved for how much hard work and how far we have come, but at the same time we came here today to win a semi-final and get ourselves into a position to win another World Cup.”So that was really disappointing how it ended, especially to put up probably one of our worst performances overall for the tournament, so that was really disappointing.”There was a brief phase, during a 103-run partnership between Steve Smith and Alex Carey, when Australia were threatening to do what countless Australian sides before them have done at these tournaments. But Australia were otherwise outplayed, as Finch admitted. And it was the very first ten overs of the game in which the semi-final was lost, Australia left dazed, confused and almost down at 27 for 3.”The damage was really done with the ball,” Finch said. “That sets you back. That forced us to rebuild for such a long time and start to drag some momentum back and then, like I said, you lose a couple of quick wickets again, new batters starting, it is always tough against really good leg-spin and good quicks as well.”So, all in all, we were totally outplayed to be honest all throughout the day, so you look back at that and you can analyse each ten overs, but just outplayed.”Aaron Finch looks on during Australia’s semi-final defeat•IDI via Getty ImagesCarey apart, each of the players who had done so much to get Australia to this point – the ones who stand up in big games, said Finch – failed. They’re not at all in the crisis that England found themselves in after the 2015 World Cup – and this tournament, as Finch pointed out, has been part of overall progress – but a longer-term look towards the next World Cup will be a natural outcome. Part of that will take in the new ODI league that leads into qualification for 2023.”I think that after a World Cup you always start looking and you have one eye towards the next one,” Finch said. “I think that as a management, senior players, I’m sure over the next next couple of months or so we will sit down and start talking about that and start planning how we think that we can best plan and prepare and improve over the next four years to get us to go, well two steps further.”I think that every team will do that. You start looking at what you can improve most, areas that you can identify that you need some work to be done and that will happen no doubt – that happens naturally with players when you are talking about the game and trying to find ways to improve.”But as a coaching staff, as a management, that will be really important as well that everyone gets on the same page and everyone pulls in the same direction which is what we have done. We have been really lucky. Everyone has bought into the way we have played and it is unfortunate we have come up short.”

United decide to keep Ten HagHe reveals details on TVUnited unhappy WHAT HAPPENED?

According to The Sun, United officials are not pleased that the Dutch manager lifted the lid on the private meeting in Ibiza, where they confirmed Ten Hag would be remaining in the role.

The Red Devils boss was on holiday at the time when club officials appeared on his doorstep to ask him to stay on for the 2024/25 season.

Speaking on Dutch TV, Ten Hag revealed the details of the meeting. "Yes, but this week, they really threw a spanner in the works because then, out of nowhere, they suddenly showed up right on our doorstep," he said. "They wanted to continue with me."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

New minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, held an end-of-season review at the club where he evaluated the performance of Ten Hag at Old Trafford. United finished eighth in the Premier League but did secure the FA Cup against rivals Manchester City, which was enough for the hierarchy at the club to back Ten Hag for next season.

With his future now decided, Ten Hag's focus will turn to the summer transfer window where he will look to recruit further reinforcements to build on their performances from last season.

A striker, defensive midfielder and centre-back are understood to be the priorities.

Elanga benched in Nottingham Forest’s predicted lineup vs West Ham

Nottingham Forest have now gone four games without a win in the Premier League, with their last victory coming in 2023.

Last weekend, the Tricky Trees were handed a 3-2 defeat by Newcastle United at the City Ground, despite bouncing back from going a goal behind twice in the first half.

Ryan-Yates-Nottingham-Forest

It was a promising performance from Nuno Espirito Santo's side, and the boss will take plenty of positives from the tie that he can focus on ahead of their game against West Ham United today.

With that in mind, let's take a look at the starting XI that the Portuguese manager could field to defeat the Hammers.

1 GK – Matz Sels

Matz Sels has started the last two matches for Forest since signing in January, and he is set to continue in between the sticks this weekend.

The aim will be to pick up his first Premier League clean sheet.

2 RB – Neco Williams

Leeds United transfer target Neco Williams in Premier League action for Nottingham Forest.

Neco Williams will continue at right back, with Nuno Santo confirming that Gonzalo Montiel is unavailable.

Ola Aina is also not ready to take part in the matchday squad despite returning from the Africa Cup of Nations.

3 CB – Moussa Niakhate

Moussa Niakhate will start in the backline after a solid, albeit unspectacular performance last weekend.

Against Newcastle, the left-footed star made three tackles and won all four of his duels.

4 CB – Murillo

Murillo

Brazilian defender Murillo has started every league game since his debut, and he will partner Niakhate.

5 LB – Nuno Tavares

Nuno Tavares has become the first choice recently, ahead of Harry Toffolo.

The Arsenal loanee will look to provide energy down the left flank.

6 DM – Ryan Yates

Ryan Yates

Ibrahim Sangare is unavailable this weekend, which means Ryan Yates will captain the side.

The 26-year-old has started the last two since the departure of Orel Mangala.

7 DM – Nicolas Dominguez

The Argentine was excellent last weekend against the Magpies, and he will start in midfield.

Nicolas Dominguez picked up an assist, had 90% pass accuracy, and made three tackles.

8 RW – Giovanni Reyna

Nottingham Forest transfer target Gio Reyna in action for the USMNT.

Giovanni Reyna is yet to be handed his first start since becoming a Forest player in January, but he could finally start this weekend.

The 21-year-old played 17 minutes against Newcastle, boasting 92% pass accuracy and making one key pass, and his creativity will be needed against the inevitable West Ham low block.

Although Anthony Elanga scored last week, his performance left a lot to be desired, and he will be the one to make way for the USMNT gem, who's been described as a "special" player by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig.

Potential bargain: Liverpool make contact with enquiry for "brilliant" gem

With injuries piling up once more and Liverpool still missing Wataru Endo due to the Asian Cup, the Reds have reportedly turned their attention to landing yet another midfielder before the end of the January transfer window.

Liverpool's midfield overhaul continues

Top of the Premier League and one leg in the Carabao Cup final, it's fair to say that Liverpool, unlike during the summer, aren't in desperate need of reinforcements during the January transfer window. That said, the injuries are gradually beginning to pile up to hand the Reds a warning sign of what could happen if their squad isn't filled to the brim with talent. Here's how Liverpool's injury list currently looks…

It's an injury list that those at Anfield will want to avoid a repeat of in the second half of the season and an issue that could be solved through the transfer market, especially if they land one potential reinforcement. According to reports in Europe, via Anfield Index, Liverpool have made contact to sign defensive midfielder Federico Redondo, who could be available for as little as €8m (£7m).

Alexis Mac Allister has apparently spoken highly about the Argentinos Juniors midfielder, which is a positive sign, and given that Redondo is just 21-years-old, the Reds could land a real talent for the future. With seven days left in the transfer window, those at Anfield will have to act quickly if they are to seal a deal this month, however.

"Brilliant" Redondo is a star for the future

Whilst Liverpool did well to welcome Dominik Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Endo and Ryan Gravenberch during the summer transfer window, the Reds must now build on their window to complete their rebuild – and Redondo could be a vital part of that. The Reds already have quite the South American contingent, with Alisson Becker, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Mac Allister all sharing a dressing room, meaning that Redondo could slot straight in.

conor-bradley-alexis-mac-allister-liverpool-opinion

With football in his blood, the Argentine is born to reach the top and Liverpool could offer him a hand up to the path that follows in his father's footsteps. For just £7m, as Redondo's stats show, those at Anfield could also get themselves a bargain. As time ticks by in the transfer window, the Liverpool target may well be one to keep an eye on.

86.6% pass completion

7.07 progressive passes

88%

1.65 progressive carries

The midfielder is certainly highly rated by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig too, given that he previously posted on X: "The son of an absolute legend, a 19-year-old academy graduate, and another brilliant young Argentinian midfield controller – Federico Redondo!"
