USMNT vs Jamaica player ratings: Haji Wright and Gio Reyna save the USMNT in extra-time – avoiding CONCACAF Nations League semifinal embarrassment

The U.S. were flat for 90 minutes, but a late own-goal and a dominant performance from standout subs Reyna and Wright saved them from embarrassment.

Talk about flirting with disaster, huh?

The U.S. men's national team found themselves just seconds away from a catastrophic result. Through 95 minutes, they had been outplayed, outhustled and, more importantly, outscored. With the score 1-0 to Jamaica, Matt Turner came all the way up for one last corner kick with the USMNT needing a miracle.

They got one. It came off the head of Miles Robinson, and then off the head of Jamaica's Corey Burke; with an own-goal sending the match to extra-time.

From there, it was one-way traffic. It ended 3-1, a result that flattered the USMNT while somewhat dismissing what really was an incredible performance from the Reggae Boyz. On any other day, Jamaica should have walked away multi-goal winners. Fortunately for the USMNT's hopes of a CONCACAF Nations League threepeat, today wasn't one of those days.

In the 30 minutes of extra-time, substitutes Haji Wright and Gio Reyna stole the show with the Coventry City striker netting twice, and the 21-year-old Nottingham Forest midfielder assisting both goals.

The USMNT performance was nowhere near good enough; it was slow, lethargic and, perhaps most important, really frustrating to watch. However, Gregg Berhalter has stressed learning how to survive knockout rounds, and that's exactly what the USMNT did. Onto the next, they'll say, but the next will have to be a whole lot better if the U.S. wants to make it three-straight in this competition.

GOAL rates the USMNT's players from AT&T Stadium…

USA Today Sports Goalkeeper & Defence

Matt Turner (5/10):

Could he have done better on the goal? It sure felt like it. He had a few other good moments to at least partially make up for that early incident.

Joe Scally (5/10):

Lost his man on the early Jamaica goal, although it wasn't completely his fault given what went on elsewhere. Still, he did have a bad foul later on, earning a yellow, before being yanked at halftime.

Miles Robinson (8/10):

Was among the more solid players on the field. Overall, a good performance as he did well to limit the Reggae Boyz attack before creating the game's biggest moment.

Chris Richards (6/10):

Couldn't quite close down on the early goal and nearly got embarrassed for being unaware on one chance in the second half. Not the best night.

Antonee Robinson (6/10):

A rare bad moment on the goal. Just wasn't ready for that first-minute chance, and it very nearly came back to bite the USMNT.

AdvertisementUSA Today Sports Midfield

Weston McKennie (7/10):

Was relatively quiet in the first half and then was surprisingly moved to right back. Had a good game no matter what position he was playing in, though.

Yunus Musah (7/10):

Really good for large stretches, with his ability to drive the ball through midfield helping the U.S. throughout. Was taken off in the second, though, as the U.S. changed things up tactically.

Malik Tillman (5/10):

Had one good chance that was just blocked away but, overall, was too wasteful. Didn't create nearly enough and his one big chance on a free kick was sent into the 20th row.

USA Today Sports Attack

Tim Weah (6/10):

Had a few good moments, including one great low cross to Tillman. Was unlucky to be taken off relatively early in the second half.

Folarin Balogun (5/10):

Got very little service and did almost nothing with what he had. Did create a good chance for Pulisic and had one decent header but, otherwise, was fairly invisible.

Christian Pulisic (6/10):

A poor day by his standards. Had one good chance that needed to be hit first-time. Set piece-wise, had a few poor ones, but his corner did lead to the own goal, so he gets credit for that.

GettySubs & Manager

Gio Reyna (9/10):

Definitely added creativity and urgency to the USMNT attack. His assists on Wright's goals were spectacular as Reyna proved once again that he can do things that no one else in this player pool can.

Haji Wright (9/10):

Took his chances in extra time, firing a pair of composed finishes to win the game. He was dangerous prior to that, too, but strikers are judged by goals, and Wright got his.

Ricardo Pepi (5/10):

Barely noticeable throughout his runout aside from one decent chance.

Tyler Adams (7/10):

Passing was fantastic, particularly for a player who has barely played over the last year, sparking the U.S. to life. Was unhappy to be taken off, but Berhalter had to protect him in extra-time.

Brenden Aaronson (6/10):

Provided the usual energy, which was key particularly in extra time.

Johnny Cardoso (6/10):

Replaced Adams, who was on a minutes restriction. Passed the ball well and had a few good defensive moments.

Gregg Berhalter (5/10):

One of the worst games of his tenure. You can't gameplan for a first-minute goal, but you can react to it. The USMNT never really did as the team looked slow and uncertain all night long, despite Robinson's last-second save.

Scouts sent: Leeds chiefs have checked on new exciting forward for Farke

Leeds United have deployed chiefs to assess a new forward live in action, but a fresh report has revealed that there are also six other clubs chasing his signature.

Leeds United's season so far

Daniel Farke’s side have made a fairly mixed start to the new campaign having won seven, drawn four and lost three of their opening 14 games in the Championship, meaning that they currently find themselves in third place in the league table.

Ipswich Town (4-3)

Cardiff City (2-2)

Birmingham City (1-0)

Millwall (3-0)

West Bromwich Albion (1-1)

Southampton (3-1)

Watford (3-0)

Sheffield Wednesday (0-0)

Stoke City (1-0)

QPR (1-0)

Hull City (0-0)

Bristol City (2-1)

Norwich City (3-2)

Huddersfield Town (4-1)

The Whites are sure to be full of confidence following the most recent thrashing over Huddersfield Town last weekend and they will know that they are more than capable of pushing for promotion this season, but regardless, that hasn’t stopped chiefs from wanting to strengthen their squad even further.

The Elland Road outfit have identified Fluminense’s right-winger Jhon Arias as a possible target, who has made a total of 135 appearances at the Maracana Stadium since first putting pen to paper back in 2021 (Transfermarkt – Arias statistics).

The Colombia international has made an outstanding beginning to this season having established himself as Fernando Diniz’s overall best-performing player with a match rating of 7.22 (WhoScored – Fluminense statistics), and the 26-year-old’s form has brought him onto the radar in West Yorkshire.

Leeds send scouts to watch Jhon Arias

According to TEAMtalk, Leeds have sent representatives to watch Arias, but they are far from alone in their pursuit ahead of January.

A Colombian attacker who’ll play in the biggest club match of his life next weekend has been scouted by Rangers, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Wolves, Burnley, Leeds Utd and Leicester City, TEAMtalk can confirm.

"TEAMtalk has been told one of Andre’s midfield teammates – Jhon Arias – will also come under observation. We understand Crystal Palace, West Ham, Burnley, Wolves, Leicester, Leeds and Scottish giants Rangers have all checked on Arias.”

Fluminense forward Jhon Arias.

Arias is a crossing machine with fantastic assist numbers

During his time at Fluminense, Arias has posted 56 involvements (30 assists and 26 goals) in 135 outings, so it’s clear to see the positive and prolific impact he makes in the final third, but even if the end product isn’t always there, he constantly tries his best to create chances.

Sponsored by Adidas, Diniz’s £7.1k-per-week earner (Fluminense salaries), also ranks in the 95th percentile for successful take-ons so he loves to use his pace to dribble past his marker (FBRef – Arias statistics), and has made 140 crosses so far this season, which is more than any of his fellow teammates (FBRef – Fluminense statistics).

Leeds are additionally bound to find it attractive that he’s a versatile operator having been deployed in eight different positions since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and in four roles in the midfield, so this really is a no-brainer of a deal to pursue should the right opportunity present itself.

Mayank Agarwal century steers India B to second straight win

Saxena replaces Injured Jayant in India B squad

Jayant Yadav has been ruled out of the Quadrangular series with a right side strain. In a like-for-like substitution, Jalaj Saxena has been called up to replace the offspin-bowling allrounder in the India B squad. Saxena was originally part of India Green squad, who are scheduled to play a Duleep Trophy game against India Blue from August 29.
Jayant played India B’s match against South Africa A on Thursday, bowling eight overs for figures of 0 for 45, but did not feature in their most recent match against India A. He will now undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

For all the seriousness of this being a List A fixture, there was a sense that the result was just academic. It was, after all, a contest between 22 players picked by Rahul Dravid, the India A coach, and the national selectors in two representative Indian squads for the Quadrangular series. While a place in the final was still at stake, it was more about how a group of cricketers that live and dine together for at least six months in a year, play alongside and against each other in the IPL, face each other at the nets, and know each other’s game inside-out, go about their game in a proper match scenario. For the record, India B won by seven wickets to post their second successive win.The contest itself wasn’t particularly exciting, but it produced a number of key individual performances, which, when put in context, provided a glimpse into the players’ mindsets. One of those players was Mayank Agarwal.Perhaps unlucky not to receive a call-up to the Test squad for the last two Tests in England, after a superb English summer with India A – he top-scored with 442 runs in six innings at an average of 88.40 in a victorious tri-series campaign – he knuckled down and flattened a quality fast-bowling attack consisting of Deepak Chahar, Mohammad Siraj and Khaleel Ahmed. He seemed to have put his non-selection aside, and his 114-ball 124 allowed India B to gallop towards their target of 218, which they reached with 53 balls to spare.Agarwal fought through the discomfort of batting with a heavily taped left webbing, which he had damaged while attempting a catch in the slips in the 12th over of the India A innings. He spent a couple of hours off the field, but returned towards the end of India A’s innings. With bat in hand, though – he could open because it was an external injury – he looked as assured as he’s ever been, reeling off boundaries in the Powerplay and checking himself in for an extended batting session. The highlight came as he marched into the 40s and hit successive sixes off K Gowtham – both over deep midwicket with the spin – to bring up his half-century. Then he once again buckled down and accumulated, seemingly intent on converting his start into his 12th List A hundred, and his fourth in his last seven innings in that format. As approached the century mark, he became more adventurous. He played and missed two consecutive deliveries and got into some banter with Siraj. The crowd clearly were on local boy Agarwal’s side and egged him on, chanting ” (hit him, son, hit him>)”. Agarwal responded by stepping out and walloping two length balls over extra-cover to march into the 90s, and then brought up his century with a pulled four. When he was out pulling with India B needing 14, he had hit 14 fours and three sixes.Shubman Gill also had a bumper India A tour of England, batting in the middle order. His seamless transition from the Under-19s to the A level along with Prithvi Shaw has many, including Dravid, excited. Fearlessness and situational awareness are traits that Gill is becoming known for, and he displayed them yet again. In England, he was often the aggressor, coming in with platform set to tee off. Here, he walked in at No. 3 in a chase of a middling target after Ishan Kishan’s early dismissal, knowing there wasn’t any need to be overly aggressive. He cut out the lofted hits and other risky shots, and instead showed off his fleet-footedness and punchy drives as he made 42 in a 97-run stand with Agarwal. Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav completed the chase in the 42nd over.As significant as Agarwal’s contribution was Prasidh Krishna’s earlier in the day. The 22-year old fast bowler, whose action is eerily similar to that of Australia’s Josh Hazlewood, finished with four wickets to go with the four he picked up in Thursday’s series-opening win over South Africa A. Two of these came in his first two overs, but the one that would have given him the most satisfaction was his third, that of Shreyas Iyer in the 11th over of India A’s innings. After setting him up with two length deliveries that angled in and held their line – Iyer edged both towards the slips – Prasidh removed the cover fielder. Iyer went for the drive off the next ball, which jagged back in off a good length, beat the inside edge, and trapped him lbw.Ambati Rayudu reconstructed the innings with a watchful 48 and looked set for another big score until he misread a Shreyas Gopal googly, to be bowled driving against the turn. K Gowtham muscled three sixes in his 35, while Sanju Samson, out first ball on Thursday, briefly held the lower order together in making 32.

Transfer update: Celtic and Rodgers eyeing move to sign new 23 y/o player

Celtic already appear to be at work ahead of the January transfer window, and a specific new midfielder appears to be on the Parkhead radar.

Celtic transfer latest…

The Hoops and Brendan Rodgers were busy over the summer when it came to new additions, with 10 new players brought to Parkhead – eight on permanent transfers and two on loan deals.

On the pitch, things have gotten off to an adequate start, with defeats in the Champions League group stages and Scottish League Cup compared to leading the Scottish Premiership by seven points after eight games. As a result, it looks as if there is still room for improvement in 2024, potentially starting in the January transfer window with further signings.

Korean football journalist Jason Lee shared a Celtic transfer update on Jeong Ho-Yeon in the last 48 hours, a player who Celtic were looking at signing during the summer. He stated that the Hoops are interested in the player and that Jeong is open to moving to Europe.

“Celtic have monitored Gwangju FC's Jung Ho-Yeon and he is of interest to the Scottish giants. Jung recently won military exemption at the Asian Games and would be open to a move to Europe.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

How many Asian players have Celtic signed?

Jeong is 23 years of age and appears to be at the peak of his powers with a career-high Transfermarkt valuation. (Jeong Ho-Yeon transfer value)

Capable of playing as a central or defensive midfielder, the South Korean helped his country win gold in the Asia Games and has spent his career with Gwangju either side of time at Dankook University. In total, Jeong has now made 66 senior appearances for his current employers, contributing to 10 goals in all competitions. Should a move to Celtic materialise, he wouldn’t be the first Asian player at Parkhead, with a number making the move to Scotland in recent years.

Therefore, Jeong could become the 10th senior midfield option on the books at Celtic Park in the New Year, making this a move to keep an eye on.

Nuno signing who netted once for Wolves is outscoring Hwang after leaving

Wolverhampton Wanderers have become prolific at unearthing flops at Molineux as their scattergun transfer strategy continues to curtail the club's quest for progress.

The Old Gold have suffered through a multitude of ill-fated decisions in the market and this is exemplified by their terrible recruitment in recent years.

While Nuno Espirito Santo's time at the club was largely successful, he did suffer a rather chequered history in the transfer market, bringing in incredible talent such as; Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Diogo Jota, but also failing in equal measure.

The Portuguese manager struggled to hit the jackpot in the striker department, aside from Raul Jimenez, shelling out huge sums of money on youngsters Patrick Cutrone and Fabio Silva. Cutrone only scored three goals in 28 appearances and is currently plying his trade in Serie B.

raul-jimenez-wolves

Silva, meanwhile, is still at Molineux and has only mustered a measly five goals in 71 appearances after costing the club a staggering £35m in 2020.

Another of those failed additions was Willian Jose, who arrived on loan from Real Sociedad in January 2021.

Willian Jose's statistics at Wolves

Wolves were desperate to sign a striker in the winter window after seeing Jimenez sidelined with a fractured skull in November, which left him with only 18-year-old club-record signing Silva to call upon through the middle.

The target man was expected to fill the Mexican's void, utilising his physical presence to occupy defenders and someone capable of bringing others into play, which is exactly the kind of player that the Old Gold had missed in the absence of Jimenez.

Aside from possessing the sought-after physical attributes, Jose was also known for his consistent goal-scoring powers having reached double figures in La Liga across four consecutive seasons between 2016 and 2020.

The Brazilian had accumulated 11 goals to his name in 37 appearances for Real Sociedad in the 2019/20 season, however, in the first half of the following term he'd only mustered three goals in 13 matches, which should have drawn concerns over his form.

Wolves instead chose to ignore the warning signs and instantly regretted that decision after he only managed one goal in 17 appearances for the club.

Whilst it was ultimately a disastrous spell for Jose, who struggled to acclimatise to the Premier League's demands, the only saving grace was the option to buy in his contract wasn't mandatory and the club were able to send him back to Spain in June.

What Willian Jose has done after leaving Wolves

After departing Molineux, Jose endured a loan spell at Real Betis in the 2021/22 campaign and made that move a permanent one last year for €11m (£9.5m).

He's spent the majority of his time struggling to find the net, evidenced by only scoring two goals in 28 La Liga appearances last term.

This season, however, the Brazilian has turned into an animal in front of goal, plundering four goals in eight matches in Spain's top flight.

And on Wednesday night, Jose's scoring exploits reached new heights as he notched a remarkable four goals in a 12-1 victory over sixth-tier side CD Hernan Cortes in the Copa Del Rey.

Perhaps more alarming for Wolves, the man who flopped at Molineux has now scored more goals than any of their current players this term, including in-form danger man Hwang-hee Chan.

Surrey's irresistible pace attack makes it eight in a row

Surrey appear unstoppable on their title march after deposing of the defending champions in three days

Matt Roller at Chelmsford06-Sep-20181:55

Surrey make it eight and promotion race hots up

ScorecardNot since 1999 have Surrey won eight Championship games on the bounce, and their current run certainly has a once-in-a-generation feel to it. That run owed much to the dual spin threat of Saqlain Mushtaq and Ian Salisbury; this time, it has been all about the seamers. On the third day at Chelmsford, led by Morne Morkel and the evergreen Rikki Clarke, they bowled Essex out for the second time in just over three sessions to go 43 points clear at the top of the Championship, and look certain to secure the pennant before the final round of games. Ravi Bopara offered staunch resistance with an unbeaten 81, but despite being some way short of their bullish best, Surrey’s pace attack was simply too good. For some time this fixture had been earmarked as a final test of Surrey’s credentials. Away from home against the reigning champions, it should have been a tough challenge; instead, they cruised to victory with a full day to spare.Surrey have proved over the course of the year that Championship cricket requires a squad rather than just a team. They have used 20 players, and that Tom Curran, who did the early damage, was playing for just the second time in this competition this season, showed their impressive level of depth.Curran was fearsome in his opening burst, running in with his collar up and his hair slicked back. He trapped Varun Chopra lbw early, before beating Tom Westley’s outside edge time after time and eventually ending his difficult stay at the crease by sending his off stump cartwheeling. It seems a long time since Curran made his Test bow at the MCG back in December, and his youngest brother Sam has overtaken him in England’s long-form plans this summer. But Tom remains a fine bowler at the Championship level, and his first spell of the day was a reminder of his worth in red-ball cricket. He bowled with hostility and an extra yard of pace, and found enough movement off the seam to keep Essex guessing. The middle-order destroyer was again Clarke. He made good use of a helpful pitch to remove Dan Lawrence and Nick Browne, both caught in the slips off back-of-a-length balls that lifted sharply, before Rory Burns’ stunning catch in the gully accounted for Ryan ten Doeschate to leave Essex five down going into lunch. At that point, the only question was whether or not Essex could make Surrey bat again, and thanks to Bopara and some old-fashioned tail-end slogging from Jamie Porter and Sam Cook, they did. Bopara was the only Essex batsman throughout the game to look comfortable at the crease, as he rotated the strike well and scored fluently both sides of the wicket. When he brought up a 76-ball half-century, he had hit just three boundaries; it was an innings that highlighted the importance of ticking over against quality bowling. But in truth, Bopara’s knock served only to delay the inevitable. Morkel returned to remove Simon Harmer for a pair, and then ended Porter’s fun after a couple of lofted boundaries off Clarke, before Bopara and Cook added 18 to leave Surrey needing two.The impact Morkel has had on this Surrey team cannot be overstated. His Championship debut was the first game of this eight-match winning run, and it would be brave to suggest that is in any way coincidental. He now has 42 wickets at 14.57, and has terrorised Division One batsman up and down the country. He did not bowl as well as he can here, but a couple of sharp bouncers to Michael Pepper and Porter showed that his pace has by no means dropped.Surrey now go to New Road next week to play bottom club Worcestershire in the knowledge that a win will effectively, if not mathematically, seal the title with two games to spare. On the basis of this run, they will be worthy winners.

Chelsea: TalkSport pundit says youngster will become "key"

Chelsea have been told there is a "versatile" youngster in their ranks who could end up being "key" for manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea form this season

The Blues haven't exactly got off to their dream Premier League start, but recent results suggest that they may well be on the up. Before a recent 2-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage, Chelsea hadn't scored a league goal since August, with criticism mounting on Pochettino and the west Londoners.

They had tasted defeat at the hands of West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, while also dropping points at home to Liverpool and away at Bournemouth. However, they've now clinched three successive wins in all competitions; securing much-needed victories over Brighton in the EFL Cup as well as Fulham and a demolition of Vincent Kompany's Burnley in the league.

“Always when you concede first and you need to break down the opponent always you feel proud when you achieve that,” Pochettino said after their Burnley 1-4 Chelsea at Turf Moor.

“The team were playing well and with the chances conceded in a situation that was completely unfair, but the team were really good, solid, the whole team. We want to improve players and try to recover the players that were injured,” Pochettino said when asked what he wanted to take from the next fortnight. The next two weeks we’re going to spend working on the training ground with a different mood from the last months.

“After two victories it is much better but I think we will keep pushing, working hard to be better in the next months.”

Chelsea next take on title-contenders Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, which will make a very interesting encounter, as both sides go into the contest on a recent run of good form.

Chelsea news – Levi Colwill

Following his 2022/2023 loan spell at Brighton, one player to have come on leaps and bounds this season is young defender Levi Colwill. The 20-year-old, who's started all eight of Chelsea's league matches so far, also earned a call-up for the England national team; featuring at left-back in their 1-0 friendly win over Australia on Friday evening.

Colwill played the whole 90 minutes of England's victory over the Socceroos, with talkSPORT pundit Darren Bent now tipping him to become a "key" player.

“Levi Colwill, really like him," said Bent.

"He’ll be 25 [at Euro 2028]. Good player. I think he is doing well at Chelsea, he can play left-back and left-centre-half. He’s versatile. I think he’ll get better with that [in Chelsea’s struggles]. I genuinely believe with this transition, he will be a key part of that transition.”

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, speaking after Brighton's 3-0 win over Arsenal last season, also hailed Colwill's bravery as a player.

“I think the best example of courage was Colwill in this game," said De Zerbi (The Argus).

“We defended man-to-man and Colwill’s man was Odegaard. Colwill went 90 minutes to defend with Odegaard 80 metres from Jason Steele. This is courage.”
