Zimbabwe strike delays domestic season

Uncertainty surrounds the resumption of domestic cricket in Zimbabwe after a player strike over a contractual dispute prevented the start of the first-class competition on Tuesday

Uncertainty surrounds the resumption of domestic cricket in Zimbabwe after a player strike over a contractual dispute prevented the start of the first-class competition on Tuesday.Players did not take the field in the matches between Mashonaland Eagles and Mid-West Rhinos and Matabeleland Tuskers and ZC confirmed the suspension of the tournament while it meets with the players’ association, whose secretary general Eliah Zvimba urged the players to take the field pending discussions.ESPNcricinfo understands Zimbabwe’s franchise players are particularly unhappy over the earn-as-you-play deals and would prefer each team to have a full-squad of contracted players. Currently, only 10 players are contracted per franchise – something ZC made provision for in July. Then, they announced that 55 cricketers would have employment across the board, with 15 central contracts and the remaining 40 spread evenly across the four sides.Non-contracted players, who would be needed in XIs particularly when the national team are in action as they are at the moment, would be paid per appearance, which has been the source of dissatisfaction in the player camp. “We cannot have that, especially in our economy which is unstable as it is,” Zvimba told ESPNcricinfo. “Players need a guarantee about income.”Zvimba was due to meet with ZC administration last Friday to discuss the issue but was unable to because both the chairman Wilson Manase and managing director Wilfred Mukondiwa were at the ICC meeting in Dubai. Instead, they had requested an audience with Zvimba the day before, but he was unavailable. The meeting has now been rescheduled to this Friday. Zvimba confirmed he has urged the players to take the field before then for the first-class matches but assured them if an agreement is not reached, he will support them in further action. “If nothing is agreed, we will push for what belongs to the players,” Zvimba said.Whether or not matches will resume on Wednesday remains unclear. ZC said it was “surprised,” with the players’ boycott and had “no choice but to suspend domestic matches until the players make themselves available.” Zvimba has encouraged the players to do exactly that, which could see the competition resume before the talks. This is Zimbabwe’s second domestic player strike in as many seasons and, once again, threatens to cripple the game. Last season, Zimbabwe’s domestic competition was halted for nearly two months from mid-December to mid-February after players refused to take the field over a similar dispute. Then, the players were protesting against unpaid salaries. This time, the dispute centres on who is paid rather than if, which could suggest ZC are at least creating certainty for some cricketers but whether that will be able to coax the likes of Graeme Cremer out of retirement remains to be seen.It already caused a raised eyebrow from one other Zimbabwean player. Kyle Jarvis, the former international pace bowler who now plays for Lancashire and has returned as an overseas player for Rhinos, tweeted: “Good start to the zim 4day domestic season. Game called off with all the teams on strike. Sad to see this is all still going on.”

Graeme Smith, the former South Africa captain, has been named tournament director and brand ambassador for the Ram Slam T20 Challenge.Smith retired from international cricket in March this year and announced in July that he will not complete his three-year deal with Surrey following knee surgery. He had hinted when he retired that he may not go into coaching but was interested in the business aspect of cricket.Haroon Lorgat, the CSA chief executive, said that the board wanted to use Smith’s experience to grow the tournament. Smith’s responsibilities will include driving public and media awareness, assisting in recruiting foreign players to participate in the event, and overseeing the draft system and the allocation of foreign players to the franchises.”When Graeme showed a desire to learn about the business of sport, it was clear to me that he would be the ideal person to direct and promote the tournament as we look to build on the success of last season,” Lorgat said. “With an enviable playing career at international level as a leader, Graeme has much to offer the game of cricket. This is a perfect fit both for Graeme and for CSA.””I am excited by this opportunity and looking forward to putting something back into the game,” Smith said. “Players love playing in South Africa and our Ram Slam T20 competition has the potential to become a tournament of choice for international players from around the world.”The tournament has struggled to achieve the same profile as similar events around the world because of its timing – which has often clashed with when the South Africa players have been on international duty – and its inability to attract T20 superstars. Both attempts at securing Chris Gayle’s services for Dolphins have not worked out. Gayle was reportedly offered R1 million (US$100,000) to play for the franchise but had to pull out with injury in both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. Shahid Afridi could not make his trip for Knights last season for personal reasons. There have been sprinklings of international interest with Saeed Ajmal playing for Titans last season, Sunil Narine turning out for Cobras and Sohail Tanvir and Dirk Nannes for Lions.South African administrators have also been trying to inject interest in the tournament by introducing double-headers and kicked off last season’s competition with a triple-header, which was poorly attended. In the lead-up to the 2015 World Cup, Smith will also be involved in the ‘Protea Fire’ campaign to promote and support the South Africa team. A CSA release noted that Smith had played a central role in developing the ‘Protea Fire’ team ethic during his time as captain.”The ‘Protea Fire’ ethos has become a valuable part of the team culture and identity in recent years,” Smith said. “I would love to continue to play a role in promoting the values, tradition and spirit around which the campaign is based so that it becomes an enduring part of the South African sporting culture.”

Neesham, Benn star on see-saw day

Sulieman Benn picked up five wickets to limit New Zealand to 293. Jimmy Neesham scored a busy fifty and helped New Zealand keep a quick tempo as they recovered from 194 for 7

Jimmy Neesham occupies the No.6 position for New Zealand. Judging from the evidence in Barbados, he has the potential to bat much higher. The composure he showed while the rest of the middle-order was prised out was remarkable and more importantly much needed to push New Zealand to 293. Hometown boy Sulieman Benn coaxed a dry pitch to lend him turn and bounce in exchange for his steadfast accuracy, but his 5 for 93 lost a little of its shine as the day wound down. Mark Craig proved a thorn again, contributing an unbeaten 46 to remedy a situation that had been 194 for 7.Chris Gayle and Kraigg Brathwaite survived nine overs till time but West Indies will be wary of being a batsman short. They had opted for a five-man attack, handing a debut to Jason Holder, and would be pleased with their openers’ positive display.West Indies ended a trend of five losses in six games across 2013-14 in Port-of-Spain and their new-look side could do with a series win. Benn epitomised that desperation and accounted for a set Kane Williamson, an aggressive Brendon McCullum, BJ Watling, whose doggedness is not to be underestimated, and Tim Southee, whose penchant for six-hitting could have hurt West Indies.Benn forced the batsman to play more often than not, a ploy that usually provides dividends when the deck offers a little grip. His high-arm action and strong pivot of the hip helped the ball grip onto the pitch. He troubled both Williamson and Ross Taylor despite their comfort against the rest of the attack during a smart 74-run partnership for the third wicket. Benn bowled unchanged from lunch until the last over before tea and also contributed in the field with a stunning grab, diving to his right at gully to cut a fluent Taylor short.Yet for all the threat Benn posed, the other end could not keep up. Neesham was aware of that. His resolve indicated he may have also known New Zealand haven’t won a series against a top-eight nation away from home in a decade. He targeted the seamers – a wayward Jerome Taylor was whipped for 21 off 13 balls. His comfort was no less against spin. Before lunch, he had worked on camping on his back foot unless the bowler was too generous with his flight. However, as his confidence grew he eased down the track to unsettle the status quo. There was turn and bounce available as early as an hour and a half into the Test. But Neesham’s intent matched his execution, as 10 fours and a six would suggest.Neesham’s crispness ensured the run-rate hovered around the four-per-over mark and orchestrated a slump in West Indies’ body language. They weren’t helped by a recalled Shane Shillingford looking off his best. The offspinner struggled to elicit the same kind of help as Benn and was often guilty of bowling too short or too full. West Indies had conceded 122 runs between lunch and tea, but ripped out most of the middle order. The hosts should have been buoyant, when play resumed but sloppy fielding crept into their play. They waited for the tail to roll over and Craig and Neesham exploited that dip in intensity. The duo cultivated 64 runs from 17.2 overs to force some respect to New Zealand’s total. There seems to be a jinx on the opening partnership for New Zealand. Three different combinations have been attempted in the past 15 months, discounting Brendon McCullum’s forced promotion in Port-of-Spain, and only once has the 100-run mark been crossed. A revival was not on the cards as Kemar Roach hit an excellent length. Hamish Rutherford chipped to mid-on and Tom Latham was worked over intelligently – a few balls darting across him and then a full, fast one swerved into his back pad plumb in front of middle. Roach finished with 4 for 61.Taylor and Williamson were cautious early on, but they were not indifferent towards scoring opportunities. Sixteen fours were hit in the morning session, with the above two scoring 13 of them. Jerome Taylor was the leak – he floated a half-volley that was caressed to the boundary by Latham to kick the match off and conceded eight further fours and a six. The discipline that has him at the top of the wicket-taker’s chart for the series was absent as he flitted between short and wide, and full and on the pads. It was this kind of inconsistency that helped New Zealand reach so close to 300 and West Indies would want to offset that with the bat tomorrow.

Carberry fails to follow up England lament

Michael Carberry, who preceded the season by being critical of England for leaving him out of the limited-overs sides without adequate explanation, began with a six-ball duck

Between those dismissals, Liam Dawson was bowled for two by Charles Morris.Carberry’s fellow opener Jimmy Adams scored freely to reach 32 not out, before the umpires called stumps midway through the ninth over.

Raina, Rohit cement India A advantage

More toil awaited the South Africa A bowlers as Rohit Sharma, unbeaten on 70 overnight, scored his 16th first-class century and shared a 106-run stand with Suresh Raina to power India A past 500. India A’s lower order then frustrated South Africa A before the visitors declared their innings at 582 for 9. South Africa were further hampered by the loss of Reeza Hendricks two overs before close of play. The morning session began with Raina and Rohit playing out six consecutive maidens, but things changed rapidly in the 99th over when Rohit pulled Andrew Birch over the boundary line and Raina helped himself to two successive fours on the off side.Unlike the one set at the start of the day, this scoring trend continued, capping off with Rohit stroking his 12th four, through the covers, to bring up his century. Raina celebrated his fifty soon after with a cut that found the boundary for four.South Africa gained some respite after lunch, when Duminy had Rohit caught by Temba Bavuma at short leg. Ajinkya Rahane, another contender eyeing a slot in the senior side, struck two fours but became Duminy’s second victim on the stroke of drinks. Wriddhiman Saha followed suit, falling to the Bavuma-Duminy combine as India went from 376 for 3 to 418 for 6.However, Raina held firm, with a brisk Ishwar Pandey, for company and India A racked up 79 runs off 74 balls to reach 500. Raina brought up a vital century, his 12th in first-class cricket, and with the landmark behind him, tore into Duminy, slugging him for 19 runs in the 143rd over. His wicket, eight balls after tea, ushered two more dismissals as India slipped to 500 for 9. An enterprising 82-run stand between No. 10 and 11, Jaydev Unadkat and Shahbaz Nadeem looked good to push India past 600, but Pujara chose to declare at 582 to have a few overs at the South African openers. The decision proved profitable as Hendricks nicked Unadkat to the keeper in the seventh over, two overs before close of play.Rohit credited the time he spent in the middle to be more beneficial than his final score. “I’m happy that I played close to 250 balls,” he said “Rather than getting 119, I feel facing that amount of balls was important.”It was a crucial phase of the game when I went in and it was important that I stay in because we didn’t want to lose any more wickets. I wanted to prove a point to myself, and nobody else, that I could battle out the situation if needed. In that process I didn’t play my natural game, which normally includes a lot of shots.”Duminy conceded the new ball was doing a bit, but was hopeful of his side seeing it off and cashing in with the older ball.”Conditions become easier to bat the longer you stay in but there is a little bit in it for the new ball,” Duminy said. “It’s quite an abrasive field so if you get past the new ball phase the ball gets old quite quickly and becomes flat. Hopefully we will be able to cash in on that.””There is a little bit of help for the spinners,” he added. “I think it is obviously because of the rough the seamers have created, which brings the offspinners into play.”

Dhaka Gladiators upset at being left out of CLT20

Dhaka Gladiators, the Bangladesh Premier League champions, have reacted strongly after the schedule of this year’s Champions League T20 was announced without the two-time BPL winners

Mohammad Isam12-Apr-2013Dhaka Gladiators, the Bangladesh Premier League champions, have reacted strongly after the schedule of this year’s Champions League T20 was announced without the two-time BPL winners. Of all the Test-playing countries, domestic Twenty20 champions from only Bangladesh and Zimbabwe have never participated in the CLT20.They had also alleged that the BCB did not send out any requests to one of the three cricket boards that organise the tournament, but the BCB has denied this claim.”We expected (to be included) and were waiting for a meeting with one the organisers – the BCCI – of the tournament,” Shihab Chowdhury, Dhaka Gladiator’s managing director, said in a statement. “We also said that things are on track but the fixtures were released before we could even make a move. We were informed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board was supposed to recommend and request the BCCI. But surprisingly this was also never done.””We were informed that Bangladesh Cricket Board was supposed to recommend and request the BCCI. But surprisingly this was never done.”In reply, BPL secretary Ismail Haider Mallick has said they never got a reply from the organisers, but they will try to include the BPL champions. “They [Dhaka Gladiators] are misinformed about our stance. We have sent letters to the Champions League T20 committee but didn’t get any replies from the concerned people. We will send letters to the BCCI, CA and CSA in this regard next week.”They went to meet the ICC but I don’t think the ICC has anything to do with this,” Mallick told ESPNcricinfo.”We were even told by the concerned that process is going and there was a very good chance for us to participate in the tournament this year, but no communication was made by the concerned thus we were not considered,” he said.
