Opinion: Jack Harrison could dictate Leeds United’s transfer policy in make or break January

Jack Harrison’s struggle to find his feet at Leeds United has arrived in tandem with a handful of reports linking the club with a move for Ibai Gomez, but a recent report suggest that they are set to miss out on the winger to Athletic Bilbao.

Indeed, a recent report from El Gol Digital suggests that Athletic Bilbao are on the brink of re-signing the 29-year-old in the coming days after impressing at Alaves since joining the club in 2016.

A recent report from AS (via Sports Witness) had hinted that Leeds were in the hunt for Gomez, but a reunion with Marcelo Bielsa looks incredibly unlikely at this stage.

Leeds may well turn their attention towards alternative targets to bolster their promotion bid, but Harrison’s form this month could yet be a determining factor in shaping their transfer strategy.

Harrison arrived at Elland Road on a season-long loan with glowing praise following him from Manchester to Yorkshire, with murmurs emerging from the Etihad Stadium hinting that he had the ability to thrive in the Championship.

But, despite his obvious technical quality, Harrison has failed to translate his ability into consistent performances and drawn plenty of criticism in the process.

However, barring a recent run of four league games without featuring in the league, Bielsa has largely stuck by Harrison and offered him plenty of opportunities to shine even when his form perhaps hasn’t justified an inclusion of any sort.

Clearly, for reasons which often elude the Whites faithful, Bielsa sees something in the 22-year-old, but with promotion on the line the Argentine may be forced to sign an alternative right-winger this month to ensure his squad is well stocked for the run in.

With just three games left between now and the end of January, Harrison has a make or break month ahead of him: a hat-trick of fine performances could be the difference between the arrival of a new winger or a more prominent role in the first-team squad for the remainder of the season.

It’s time for Harrison to build on his sporadic moments of quality and showcase the quality which Bielsa clearly sees in him.

Revealed: 59% of Aston Villa fans want Dean Smith to succeed Bruce

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa have suffered a poor run of form in recent weeks, winning just one of their last ten games across all competitions.

The poor sequence of results ultimately cost Steve Bruce his position as the club’s manager earlier this week and has left the promotion hopefuls in the hunt for a new boss, with the plan to secure an appointment during the international break.

Ahead of Bruce’s sacking this week, we asked fans whether they believe Brentford manager Dean Smith would be a decent replacement for the former Manchester United defender and the results were very tight.

A majority of 59% said that they would like to see Smith leave the Bees to take charge at Villa Park, with the remaining 41% seemingly holding out for a different option to fill their managerial void.

Smith has guided Brentford into the play-off spots this season but just two points separate the Bees from 15th-placed Bolton.

Newcastle fans don’t want to lose Ritchie to sign Townsend

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to a report claiming it’s one or the other between Andros Townsend and Matt Ritchie, and it’s bad news for Townsend.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle will only sign Townsend if they can offload Ritchie.

The Magpies have been heavily linked with a return for Townsend, who scored some wonderful goals during his short stint on Tyneside.

However, plenty of fans haven’t forgiven the 26 year-old for jumping ship when Newcastle were relegated, and it seems they’d much rather stick with Ritchie.

The Scottish midfielder is as hard working and passionate as they come, and has himself grabbed a couple of wonderful goals for the Toon Army.

Xherdan Shaqiri’s move to Liverpool has now opened the door for Ritchie to make the switch to Stoke, as the Potters look for proven Championship talents.

The 5 ft 8 ace hasn’t found the same success in the Premier League that he had in the Championship, but he is loved by fans on Tyneside, and they’re all saying the same thing in response to the latest report.

Everton fans full of praise for Rooney after scoring wonder goal

Wayne Rooney has had his critics over the last year or so, with many questioning whether he is good enough to still be playing at the top level.

Well, Everton fans think they have the answer after watching the 31-year-old score a wonder goal in his first appearance for the Toffees since returning to the club.

Last week, Rooney signed for his boyhood club from Manchester United, where he spent the last 13 years.

The forward was hugely successful at Old Trafford, winning 12 trophies and becoming the club’s leading goalscorer.

In his final season, he struggled for game time under manager Jose Mourinho, which led to suggestions that his time as a professional is coming to an end.

Rooney may have something to say about that after Thursday’s game, though, as he scored in Everton’s 2-1 win over pre-season opponents Gor Mahia in Tanzania.

As expected, Everton fans were more than happy with his contribution, and some are feeling pretty smug that they have Rooney back in their ranks.

Guardiola concedes title race is over for Manchester City

Manchester City are no longer in the hunt for the Premier League title, according to manager Pep Guardiola.

The Spaniard, who won six league titles across spells in charge of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, made the admission after his team were beaten 4-0 by Everton on Sunday afternoon.

The North-West team have now recorded four league defeats in their last eight games, and currently sit fifth in the table, 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea after 21 games.

[ad_pod id=’now-tv’ align=’centre’]

On a personal note for Guardiola, the result against Everton was his worst ever league defeat as a manager.

The misery for City began just after the half-hour mark at Goodison Park when Romelu Lukaku put Everton ahead, and then Kevin Mirallas doubled the Merseyside outfit’s lead 13 minutes later.

City failed to turn it around and they were humiliated further when Toffees youngster Tom Davies and January signing Ademola Lookman added to the scoreline.

After the match, when asked if the title race is over for City, Guardiola told reporters:

“The first one (first place), yeah. The first one is a 10-point gap and that is a lot of course. The second one is three points, so we have to see. I spoke with the players for the last three weeks to forget about the table.

“Focus on the next game and do our best. After that, at the end of the season, we’ll analyse how our level was, our performance, the coach, the players. After we are going to decide.”

Why Guardiola to Arsenal makes more sense than you think

Two things keeping reoccurring: Arsenal flirt with the idea of mounting a title change, before reverting to type; while Manchester City try and court Pep Guardiola as the Spaniard flutters his eyelashes at United. So perhaps it’s time Arsenal fixed their problem by offering the Bayern Munich boss a home in London.

Until Pep Guardiola signs a new contract in Germany, speculation will continue as to where his next managerial role will be. The whole saga could be his way of getting the best deal from Bayern. However, he is a man that has spoken of his desire to continue his travels through the footballing world.

Bayern Munich themselves aren’t daunted by the prospect of their manager leaving. Their CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was reported by ESPN saying: “There is no person in this world who can’t be replaced at some point. That’s the state of things. Players come, players go, and the same applies to coaches. They come and they go at one point.”

Guardiola’s detractors (yes, there are plenty) highlight that he inherited good squads at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich. There’s often a sense it was harder to fail in his last two roles than it was to find success.

In this sense Manchester City appear the best fit. They have a squad brimming with potential that Pellegrini’s best efforts have failed to make the dominant force in the Premier League, let alone the Champions League. Combine this with the presence of Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain at the Etihad, two men Guardiola has worked with at Barcelona, and it should be a foregone conclusion.

But Pep prefers Manchester United. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans of the Citizens who aren’t exactly waiting with expectant open arms for the Spaniard’s arrival to these shores. After managing two of the classic big names in European football, United offer him the chance to tick-off arguably the biggest name in England.

The problem is they aren’t in the best position right now. He may view the post with suspicion. Since Moyes left, Louis van Gaal has failed to ignite the Old Trafford side. Guardiola would fear being yet another interim manager, trying to reshape a side and inner workings of the club. The looming shadow of Alex Ferguson over a new manager’s achievements could deter him. Unless van Gaal wins the league this year and retires.

These doubts leave the door open for Arsenal to make an offer to Pep. They may lack the perceived stature of United and the spending ability of City, but genetically the team is closer to his style. The Gunners always play beautiful football and each season they feel close to becoming genuine title contenders.

The annual summary is they are only one or two big signings away from breaking the cycle. Arsene Wenger will always be thanked for the success he has brought over the years and his sound financial management as the club coped with the cost of a new stadium. But he has hit a ceiling of his own making and is now stuck in his ways.

Guardiola can bring a few new signings and a fresh approach to the Emirates. He won’t need to reinvent the wheel there. It’s a perfect blueprint for his ideology and taking a team from the capital to Champions League glory would further cement his place as an all-time great.

Wenger should be graceful and allow the man that wanted to come to Arsenal as a player, lead them forward as the manager.

Balotelli crashes car near hometownEscapes without any major injuriesRefused to take breathalyzer test after incidentWHAT HAPPENED?

Just before 7:30 pm local time, Balotelli reportedly lost control of his automobile and slammed into a wall in Orzinuovi, close to his hometown of Brescia, according to Sky Italia. The impact of the collision prompted the airbags to inflate, and no other cars were involved. The 33-year-old was able to free himself from his car and lie down before paramedics arrived to see to him. Despite the vehicle being described as "destroyed" and images of the wreckage appearing on social media, he apparently avoided major injury.

SportMediaset [via The Mirror] claims that Balotelli defied police efforts by consenting to a breathalyser test. Currently living in Turkey after he signed with Adana Demirspor in September, he was given permission by his team to recuperate from an injury at home in Italy.

DID YOU KNOW?

The incident occurred the same week when Balotelli publicly stated his desire to rejoin the Italy squad, despite receiving his last of 36 caps five years ago. The comments came after the Azzurri qualified for Euro 2024, despite only attaining a 0-0 draw with Ukraine in their last group match.

Andre Onana will provide more heart-in-mouth moments for Man Utd – but it will be worth it if he can help lead Erik ten Hag's side back to glory

The Cameroon international was signed to transform the Red Devils' style of play, but he will need patience and support if he is to be a success

All summer, Manchester United fans had been rubbing their hands thinking about the positive impact Andre Onana could have on their side's play. Yet just 22 minutes into his first match at Old Trafford against Lens, they saw the negative side of their new £47-million ($60m) goalkeeper's way of playing.

The Cameroonian was outside his area when his side were in possession, but when Diogo Dalot's wayward pass landed at the feet of Lens forward Florian Sotoca, he was left dangerously exposed. Sotoca reacted quickly, and with his first touch he sent the ball high into the air, leaving Onana to scramble back towards his line in vain.

As he lay lying tangled in the net with a glum look on his face, many supporters might have been wondering if getting rid of David de Gea for Onana was such a wise move after all. They may have remembered the words of warning from Dwight Yorke and Ben Foster, who have reiterated that a goalkeeper's number one job is to make saves, not get involved in the play. A goalkeeper's place is in his area, not outside it, they will have thought.

They should brace themselves for more heart-in-mouth moments from Onana and indeed more costly errors. But they should also remember that the goalkeeper has not been brought to Old Trafford to play it safe. He has been signed to transform the team's style of play and bring United up to speed with their greatest rivals. And, if he is given the support and patience he needs, that is what he will do.

Getty Team-mates must adapt

Although many people were quick to point the finger at Onana when Lens took a surprise lead at Old Trafford, the goalkeeper wasn't really the man to blame. That was Dalot, who made a careless pass which Sotoca ruthlessly seized upon.

The goalkeeper was out of his area, but he so often is. There are many pictures of Onana with the ball at his feet – although sometimes without it – next to the halfway line, with a defender behind him. And his new team-mates need to be aware of this new reality and that any misplaced pass in their own half, such as the one Dalot played, will leave Onana vulnerable to being lobbed.

But the goalkeeper showed he has the personality to admit when he has made a mistake and still volunteered to do post-match interviews. “Like I always say, I am responsible for everything, especially when we concede goals," Onana said. "I’m the big man at the back so I take all the criticism, all the responsibility is on me.”

AdvertisementProShotsFronting up

It was not the first time Onana took responsibility for a high-profile mistake and it will not be the last. The Cameroonian was no stranger to errors while playing under Ten Hag at Ajax, and two of his biggest mistakes led to them exiting the Champions League.

One of those was against Liverpool in the 2020-21 group stage, when he let a Neco Williams cross pass him by as he thought it would sail out for a goal-kick. He had failed to spot, however, the presence of Curtis Jones, who stuck out a leg to send the ball into the net.

Onana fronted up after the game, telling reporters: “I made a mistake. I have nothing more to say. It’s my mistake and I’m responsible. We didn’t draw or win today because of me. I take all the blame.” The defeat meant Ajax went into their final game of the campaign trailing Atalanta and a loss to the Italians knocked them out.

The following season, Ajax were locked in a tight last-16 second leg at home to Benfica. Late in the game, Onana misjudged the flight of a cross and was beaten in the air by Darwin Nunez, who sent the Portuguese side through at Ajax's expense.

GettyEven the best make big errors

Every goalkeeper, however, makes mistakes and more often than not they lead to goals. Goals that come from careless kick outs are the hardest to swallow, but they happen to the very best.

Just look at last season's Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Liverpool, a meeting of two of the best goalkeepers in the world, Thibaut Courtois and Alisson Becker. In the space of 21 minutes, the pair exchanged howlers. Courtois had received a bouncing back pass from Dani Carvajal, and after taking it on his chest he allowed the ball to bobble off his knee and straight to Mohamed Salah, who was standing about one metre from him and only had to prod it into the net. Down the other end, Alisson received a simple pass back from Joe Gomez, and as Vinicius Junior went to close him down, the goalkeeper fired it straight at the body of his Brazilian compatriot, whose block sent the ball straight into the goal.

Alisson has made a litany of costly mistakes for Liverpool, including being tackled in his area by Leicester's Kelechi Iheanacho one month into his Premier League career and, also against Leicester, flying out of his area and crashing into his own defender Ozan Kabak. But, unlike his predecessor Loris Karius, he has compensated by making Liverpool a much better team in possession.

GettyEndorsed by Guardiola

The same is true of Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson. United fans revelled when the Brazilian threw the ball at the feet of Scott McTominay in the Manchester derby in 2020 and the midfielder clinched the 2-0 win. Liverpool were delighted when he kicked the ball straight to Mohamed Salah at Anfield and the Egyptian calmly lobbed him.

Ederson made high-profile errors last season too, gifting Harry Kane a goal after a sloppy pass. However, he has helped City win five of the last six Premier League titles and had a pivotal role in the Champions League final win over Inter. But on that night when it came to audacious acts of dribbling and passing, Ederson was upstaged by Onana.

Pep Guardiola had waxed lyrical about Onana in the build-up to the match, and the Catalan coach knows a thing or two about ball-playing 'keepers. His mentor was Johan Cruyff, who famously said: "In my teams, the goalie is the first attacker, and the striker the first defender." Guardiola always backed Victor Valdes when he was Barcelona coach and encouraged the goalkeeper to keep coming out of his area and play ambitious passes.

And his first act as City coach was to get rid of Joe Hart, a modern club legend, due to his deficiencies with the ball. As he praised Onana, Guardiola could not resist a dig at City's local rivals, contrasting Inter's intricate passing out from their goalkeeper with United's then 'keeper De Gea, which he bluntly described as "long ball".

Ligue 1 Team of the Season: Mbappe and Neymar shine for PSG as Pepe breaks through

Paris Saint-Germain ran out Ligue 1 winners for the second successive season, but there were impressive performers elsewhere

    Mike Maignan | Lille

Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan has enjoyed a standout season, which has been recognised by France coach Didier Deschamps, who has called him up for the June international fixtures.

The former PSG youth has proven to be highly reliable for Christophe Galtier’s side, showing the type of consistency that has him tipped to be Les Bleus’ No.1 on a long-term basis.

LOSC finished the season with the best defence in the league, conceding only 30 times, and they owe much to their shot-stopper, who has a particular speciality in saving penalties.

    Kenny Lala | Strasbourg

One of the revelations of the season in Ligue 1 this term, the Strasbourg full-back can count himself unlucky not to have been awarded a call up to the France side.

He was used primarily as a left-sided wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation, which played to his offensive strengths. Over the course of the season, he scored five times and created nine more, finishing outright fourth for assists for all players in Ligue 1.

    Marquinhos | PSG

Paris Saint-Germain signed Marquinhos from Roma in 2013 with the expectation that he would grow into one of Europe’s best defensive players, and that has proven to be the case as he turned in another redoubtable season.

Not only did the Brazilian enjoy another solid campaign in the heart of the rearguard at Parc des Princes, he was used by Thomas Tuchel as a defensive midfielder and grew impressively into that role, too.

    Thiago Silva | PSG

Will turn 35 in September, but the former AC Milan man is just as classy as ever.

A rock-steady performer in the heart of the PSG defence, it is unusual to see him make an error, particularly at Ligue 1 level. No-one in the league who made at least 1000 passes had a higher completion rate.

He is currently fighting a race against time to be fit for Brazil’s Copa America campaign, which might be the last chance he has to participate in a major tournament.
