Onions 'hurting' as Ashes hopes fade

Six months ago Graham Onions was pencilled into England’s Ashes squad, but his hopes of taking on Australia in November are now hanging by a thread after the toughest time of his career

Andrew McGlashan30-Jun-2010Six months ago Graham Onions was pencilled into England’s Ashes squad, but his hopes of taking on Australia in November are now hanging by a thread after the toughest time of his career which began with him being dropped before he developed knee and back injuries.Onions’ last act in an England shirt was to heroically survive the final over from Morne Morkel at Cape Town to secure the team a last-gasp draw for the second time in three Tests after he had fended off Makhaya Nitni at Centurion just over two weeks before. However, just days after his Newlands rearguard he was surprisingly omitted at Johannesburg and since then his year has gone from bad to worse. He arrived in Bangladesh with what started as a minor back problem but was later diagnosed as a stress reaction that could have developed into a fully blown stress fracture. Although that worst case scenario hasn’t occurred Onions, who also had surgery on his knee problem, hasn’t played this season and is unlikely to take the field before September, which leaves him precious little time to secure a berth to Australia amongst a crowded England pace attack.”The last few months have been massively frustrating,” he told Cricinfo. “When you’ve had a place in the team for a while and you lose it it’s hugely disappointing and hurts a lot. Before the injury everything had been like a dream for me, all I ever wanted to do was play for England, but the last six months have been tough. Now it’s about me channelling that frustration.”The rehabilitation is going well, but I can’t give you a definite answer of when I’ll be back,” he added. “I had a bit of a rest when I came back from Bangladesh, but probably tried to come back a little too early. It’s just a case of doing all I can and there are three our four Championship matches in September which I am aiming for. Fingers crossed by mid-August I will be bowling pain free.”In Onions’ absence England’s pace ranks have been swelled by the emergence of Steven Finn, Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad. Finn is a certainty for the Ashes after his impressive start to Test cricket, while both Bresnan and Shahzad have a good chance of travelling along with the established pair of Stuart Broad and James Anderson. There could be one more fast-bowling slot on the plane, but this England management team are unlikely to take a risk on anyone who has had a recent serious injury and Onions knows he faces a race against time.”It’s out my hands,” he said. “If I can play in September that’s as good as I can aim for at the moment. Then if I get wickets it’s up to the selectors to decide. That’s all I can ask for, and ask of myself. If I’m not fit I won’t be selected and that’s fair enough, but if I can take a few wickets I can give myself a chance.”But although it has hurt for Onions to watch others enjoy success for England, he has been very impressed with the recent performances of the bowling until. “It hasn’t just been Steven Finn, Shahzad has started well and Bresnan, who is a good friend, has done really well.”Now those three need to stay injury-free and keep winning games,” he added with a hint of ruefulness. “They are all producing the goods and the England team is a great place to be at the moment.”Sadly for Onions, he isn’t part of it at the moment and it could be a while before he finds his way back. Graham Onions officially marked the start of the npower Urban Cricket World Record Attempt in Nottingham, where 2010 children participated in a mass game of cricket to set a New World Record

A rocky 2022-23 campaign by Liverpool's high standards had spread doubts among certain corners that Klopp may not be the right man to lead the club forward. But his side have been near indomitable so far this season, losing just once in the league and entering this month's international break just one point behind leaders Manchester City.

A small blemish on the German's record was the Europa League defeat in Toulouse last week, which saw Klopp drowned out in the post-match press conference in bizarre fashion.

Lionel Messi vs. Tom Brady: Who has had a better 'football' career?

The Barcelona superstar and Patriots quarterback are both living legends — but which one has been more impressive in their sport?

Lionel Messi and Tom Brady are often considered the greatest of all time in their respective sports. Messi has won everything there is to win on the club level in soccer, while Brady has a handful of Super Bowl rings and can add one more on Sunday. Both have racked up unbelievable amounts of individual honors during their careers on their way to becoming living legends.

Although Brady is 10 years older than Messi, the New England Patriots quarterback got his career off to a later start than the Barcelona superstar. But for nearly two decades the two have been in the global spotlight and have only gotten better and better with no end point in sight.

Which player has accomplished more? Who has had more of an impact on their sport? Goal takes a closer look at who will go down in history with a more impressive career:

    Ballons d'Or/NFL MVP awards

    Messi – 5
    Brady – 2

It may seem strange to even compare the two honors but allow us to explain…

Both the Ballon d'Or and the NFL MVP award are given to the best player in the sport over the year. Despite there being several more teams and players to choose from in soccer, the winner will most likely be someone who has carried his team deep into the Champions League. The NFL is much like the Champions League due to the fact it's a league comprised of the best teams and players in the world competing each week. Long story short, it's equally impressive to individually stand out from the rest in both soccer and the NFL.

It's been a two-man race between Messi and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo for the Ballon d'Or over the past 10 years, with the Argentine forward being named the world's best player a record-tying five times. The NFL seems to have more competition for its MVP award than the Ballon d'Or, as there have been seven different winners over the same span.

But Brady was named MVP only twice during his 17-year career and Messi has won the Ballon d'Or five times over 13 years.

    European Golden Shoes/Passing Touchdowns Leader

    Messi – 4
    Brady – 4

Messi has led all players in Europe in scoring four times, while Brady has led the NFL in touchdown passes in four seasons. Messi has had to compete with thousands of players as Brady is up against only 31 other starting QBs each year. But don't let that fool you.

We can partially credit Messi's goal-scoring totals to the fact Barcelona plays in La Liga, where the Blaugrana are consistently more talented than their opposition most weeks. Messi has had a list of all-time greats playing with him, with players like Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Neymar, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Samuel Eto'o and Luis Suarez sharing the attacking load and making the job a bit easier on the Argentine.

Brady, on the other hand, goes head to head with the best quarterbacks on the planet each week. He also has to face the top defensive players in the world every time he takes the field. On top of that, the talent around Brady has not always been world class. Aside from Randy Moss – who was seemingly past his prime when he joined New England in 2007 – and Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots QB has worked with a list of pass-catchers that is entirely underwhelming. It's telling that the first year Moss and Brady played together they set an NFL record for touchdowns by a duo.

    Champions League titles/Super Bowl wins

    Messi – 4
    Brady – 5

The most realistic comparison of any soccer league in the world to the NFL is the Champions League. The top club competition pits Europe's top teams and players against each other each meeting, with 32 of the best teams in Europe making the group stage. The NFL doesn't have any competing leagues, which makes the 32-team league ultra competitive all season.

Messi has led Barcelona to Champions League titles four times and Brady has a record five Super Bowl trophies to his name. The QB has a very good chance to add another ring against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII.

The fact Brady has won more championships in the NFL than Messi in the Champions League makes this category an easy one to decide.

    La Liga titles/AFC East titles

    Messi – 8
    Brady – 15

How can we compare a four-team NFL division to the 20-team Primera Division? That's a good question but hear us out…

The 32-team NFL is divided up by eight divisions. Brady's Patriots have dominated the AFC East since he became their starting QB, which has given them an easy path to the playoffs almost every season.

La Liga may feature more teams, but recently it's been a two or three-team race between Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico for the title. With the top three in the table earning a Champions League berth, Barca is nearly a lock to play in Europe every year.

But due to the poor play of opposing AFC East teams over the past 18 years and the fact Barcelona has to compete with Real Madrid for first place, it's more impressive for Messi to win La Liga than Brady to win his division.

Kevon Cooper reported for suspect action in PSL

West Indies and Lahore Qalandars allrounder Kevon Cooper has been served a warning after umpires reported his bowling action after Tuesday evening’s match against Quetta Gladiators. It is not clear if one or more deliveries of Cooper were reported, but a PSL media release stated the he could continue to bowl. However, if his bowling action is reported one more time, Cooper will be suspended from bowling in the tournament. It is the first time a bowling action has been reported in the PSL.”Mr. Cooper has now been placed on the warning list and may continue to be selected to play and bowl for his team in a PSL match,” the PSL release said. “Under the PSL Suspected Illegal Bowling Action policy, if a player is reported while on the warning list, the player shall be suspended from bowling for the remainder of the PSL tournament and from bowling in any matches organized by the PCB until such date as he is cleared or upon conclusion of any ineligibility period.”Cooper’s managed figures of 1 for 37 in his four overs against Gladiators, who won a high-scoring thriller off the last ball. Overall, Cooper has taken six wickets in six PSL matches while conceding his runs at an economy rate of 9.23.This is not the first instance of Cooper’s bowling coming under the scanner. His action has been found suspect twice in the past: first in 2011 during the Caribbean Premier League and then during the 2014 IPL.

New Zealand take control on bowlers' day

Sri Lanka’s top order slumped against the swinging ball after their bowlers had restricted New Zealand to 221 in the first innings

The Report by Devashish Fuloria02-Jan-2015

Kane Williamson was the only batsman who appeared comfortable•Getty Images

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsGiven that there was not much difference in the colour of the pitch from the adjoining square, it was a “pretty easy decision” for Angelo Mathews to bowl after winning the toss at Basin Reserve. Add to that overcast skies and the conditions appeared tailor-made for seamers. That decision seemed to have backfired as no swing or seam was apparent and New Zealand were untroubled till after lunch, scoring at more than four an over. However, the Sri Lanka seamers, led by Nuwan Pradeep and buoyed by the dismissal of Brendon McCullum for a two-ball duck, came back strongly in the second session as New Zealand lost their last eight wickets for 80 runs to be bowled out soon after tea. However, much of that early advantage was eroded by the end of the day as Sri Lanka’s top order slumped against the moving ball. The swing that the Sri Lankans had been searching for, the New Zealand bowlers found straightaway. Thirteen wickets fell in the last two sessions, five of them Sri Lankan, and the visitors were now in danger of conceding a big first-innings lead.Sangakkara completes 12000 Test runs

12000 Kumar Sangakkara became only the fifth batsman to score 12000-plus runs in Tests and the fastest to the landmark, having reached it in his 223rd innings. Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting both took 247 innings.

15 Wickets that fell on day one in Wellington – only the second instance of 15 or more wickets falling on the first day of a Test in New Zealand. The only other time was in 1974 when 18 wickets fell on the first day’s play of a Test between the hosts and Australia. Coincidentally, in that Test Australia were all out on an identical score of 221, before New Zealand lost eight wickets before the close of play.

40 Number of innings between Brendon McCullum’s last duck and his zero in this Test. McCullum’s previous duck had come against India in the first innings of the Bangalore Test in 2012. Up to that innings, McCullum had averaged a duck every 11 innings in Tests. The 40-innings gap coincided with a productive period for McCullum in Tests, during which he scored 1893 runs at an average of 48.53 with five hundreds and five fifties.

4 Wickets taken by Nuwan Pradeeep in New Zealand’s first innings at an average of 15.75 runs per wicket. Pradeep had taken just 14 wickets in his last eight Tests, giving away 1019 runs, at an average of 72.78. After this innings, his bowling average has come down to 60.11. He has now taken 18 wickets in 17 innings at a strike rate of 86.8 and an economy of 4.15.

12.33 Lahiru Thirimanne’s batting average since his last hundred in Tests, against Bangladesh in Galle in 2013. In 14 innings since then Thirimanne has made 148 runs and has been out for four ducks.

Trent Boult made the first strike, forcing an outside edge from Dimuth Karunaratne in his fifth over, before Doug Bracewell, chosen over Neil Wagner specifically for this pitch, struck in consecutive overs to leave Sri Lanka wobbling at 29 for 3. Mathews resisted for a while before being squared up by an outswinger from Tim Southee, while Prasanna Jayawardene edged Bracewell to second slip off the last delivery of the day. The hopes of any rearguard action rested solely on Kumar Sangakkara, who crossed the personal landmark of 12,000 Test runs, and showed signs of comfort towards the end as his trademark cover drive made appearance. The Basin Reserve strip had promised more for the bowlers than the green Hagley Oval pitch last week on which McCullum had trampled on Sri Lanka’s hopes. Similar fate seemed in store for the visitors as Kane Wiliamson and Ross Taylor added 79 runs in 95 balls to lift New Zealand to 141 for 2, the toss win appearing a lost opportunity. That was till one Pradeep delivery moved off the pitch and caught the inside edge of Taylor’s bat to rattle the stumps.Next over, McCullum inside-edged a Suranga Lakmal delivery on to his stumps playing a shot that has been his solid ally over the past 12 months – the back-foot punch. What difference can a change of date make in someone’s fortunes? Ask McCullum. In 2014, he couldn’t make a mistake even if he wanted to. He was scoring runs at home, he was scoring them away, he was being rock solid and he was being downright disrespectful to bowlers. His previous innings at Basin Reserve – 302 against India – was the highlight of a magnificent year for which he was handed the key to the city by the mayor of Wellington during the lunch break. The first innings of 2015, though, turned out to be brief and it was the inspiration Sri Lanka were looking for after being betrayed by the greenery. From 141 for 2, New Zealand were 142 for 4.Although there was still no alarming help from the pitch, Sri Lanka’s bowlers stuck to better lines and extracted just enough to create pressure on the batsmen. James Neesham, who had scored a century on debut at this ground a year ago, played a loose drive to be caught behind off Pradeep, then BJ Watling steered a wide delivery from Mathews into the hands of first slip. When Dhammika Prasad induced a false shot from Williamson five balls later, Sri Lanka had more or less arrived where they would have aimed to be at tea – into the New Zealand tail. Not too long before, Williamson reached his half-century from 75 balls with a streaky boundary through the slip cordon. That, however, was one of the few times he had not been in control as he showed little sign of new-year blues. After being stuck on zero for 16 balls, he had registered his first runs of the year with consecutive boundaries off Mathews. Once he had some runs on the board, he continued to score at an effortlessly quick pace without playing expansive shots, thus going almost unnoticed during his innings. Williamson’s dismissal – he played on just like Taylor and McCullum – showed that despite the ball not doing much, scoring runs was not easy on the pitch.Quick runs were scored in the first session when the Sri Lanka bowlers couldn’t find the right length. As a result, the false shots appeared only when the batsmen became ambitious. One of them accounted for Tom Latham as he played at a back of a length Lakmal delivery from round the wicket. New Zealand had scored 62 when Hamish Rutherford committed the same mistake as Latham – fishing at one away from his body – and fell after yet another start. It has been 15 innings since he scored his only half-century in Tests, but his 37 was the second-highest score on a whirlwind day.

O time de Jorge Jesus é o terceiro colocado do campeonato.
