Harry Brook confirmed as England's new white-ball captain

England batter will take over from Jos Buttler across both T20I and ODI formats

Andrew Miller07-Apr-2025Harry Brook has been confirmed as England’s new white-ball captain, across both T20I and ODI formats, after Jos Buttler’s decision to stand down following his team’s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy in March.Brook, 26, has been England’s vice-captain in white-ball cricket for the past year, and led the side in Buttler’s absence for five ODIs against Australia last September. His first outing as the official captain will come in three home T20Is and three ODIs against West Indies at the end of May.”It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain,” Brook said. “Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.”Brook had been the outstanding candidate for the role after emerging as a key player across formats since his debut in 2022, including Test cricket, for which he is currently ranked as the No.2 batter behind his England team-mate Joe Root, having made a career-best 317 against Pakistan in Multan last year.Speculation had mounted about Brook’s impending appointment when, on the eve of this year’s IPL, he pulled out of his deal with Delhi Capitals for the second year running, citing the need for England to remain his “priority and focus” ahead of a busy 12 months across formats, including key Test series against India and Australia, and the next T20 World Cup in February 2026.”I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way,” Brook said. “Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them.Related

“There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events. I’m excited to get going and give it everything I’ve got.”Though still relatively inexperienced as a leader, Brook impressed with his tactical nous in the 3-2 series loss to Australia in September, having also led the Under-19 team at the 2018 World Cup. He has also captained Northern Superchargers in the Men’s Hundred, when available.Though there were no realistic alternatives to Brook as T20I captain, there had been some thought as to whether Ben Stokes should take on the role in ODI cricket, given his existing relationship with Brendon McCullum, and the extent to which the 50-over and Test squads have overlapped in recent months.Speaking in March, Rob Key, England men’s managing director, acknowledged it would be “stupid” not to consider Stokes’ credentials. However, with Stokes still recuperating from hamstring surgery, and given that he had previously retired from the format in 2022 citing his workload, this option was not pursued.Key said: “I’m delighted that Harry Brook has accepted the role as England’s white-ball captain across both formats. He’s been part of our succession planning for some time, albeit this opportunity has come slightly earlier than expected.”Harry is not only an outstanding cricketer, but also has an excellent cricketing brain and a clear vision for both teams that will help drive us towards winning more series, World Cups and major global tournaments.”To date, Brook has played 26 ODIs for England, scoring 816 runs at 34.00, including a match-winning century as captain against Australia last summer. In T20Is, he has played 44 games, averaging 28.50 with a top score of 81 not out, and was part of the team that won the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022.

NOC issue, fixture clash put Mustafizur's IPL participation in doubt

The BCB has stated that neither the player nor the BCCI has approached it for an NOC

Mohammad Isam14-May-2025Delhi Capitals’ (DC) signing of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman for the remainder of IPL 2025 has hit a snag, with the BCB stating that it hasn’t been approached for a no-objection certificate (NOC).Usually, the IPL only announces signings after a player has received an NOC from his home board. According to its CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury, however, the BCB had yet to receive a request for one.”Mustafizur is supposed to go with the team to the UAE according to the schedule,” Chowdhury told ESPNcricinfo on Wednesday. “We have not received any communication from IPL officials. I have also not received any such official communication from Mustafizur either.”Related

Mustafizur is part of the Bangladesh T20I squad that is due to play back-to-back away T20I series against UAE and Pakistan, both of which clash with the IPL. On Wednesday, hours after the IPL announced his signing as a replacement for Jake Fraser-McGurk, Mustafizur flew out to Dubai with the rest of Bangladesh’s squad.Bangladesh are due to play two T20Is in the UAE on May 17 and 19, followed by five in Pakistan on May 25, 27 and 30, and June 1 and 3. Those two series are in conflict with the IPL; DC are set to play their last three league matches on May 18, 21 and 24, followed by the playoffs should they get there.ESPNcricinfo has sought a response from DC on this development.

Stand-in captain Harris signs contract extension at crisis club Lancashire

Australian batter is leading run-scorer in Division Two this season despite Lancashire’s struggles

ESPNcricinfo staff29-May-2025Lancashire, county cricket’s crisis club, have tied their interim captain Marcus Harris to a two-year contract extension after his fine start to the Championship season. Harris has scored 825 runs in seven matches this season, including three centuries, and has agreed a deal which will see him play for Lancashire for the next two summers.Harris recently took over from Keaton Jennings as stand-in captain, but was unable to prevent an innings defeat to Leicestershire last week which left Lancashire winless after seven games, and one point off the foot of the Division Two table. Their disastrous run of form has cost Dale Benkenstein his job as head coach, with Steven Croft taking caretaker charge.Harris, who turns 33 in July, has played 14 Tests for Australia but has not featured since the 2021-22 Ashes and appears to be out of favour with the national selectors. He should therefore be fully available for Lancashire across the next two summers. He is not part of their plans in the T20 Blast but should be available in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.Related

“I have loved the start of my time with Lancashire, and I am really pleased to extend my contract at Emirates Old Trafford by a further two years,” Harris said. “It was a great honour to be asked to lead the Red Rose in four-day cricket and I hope that I can continue to make positive contributions, both with the bat and as a leader on the field.”The start to this season hasn’t been what we all would have wanted, but we are determined to put things right in the County Championship when we next take to the field at the end of June.”Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s director of cricket, may also find his role under pressure if results do not improve, but said he was pleased to have secured Harris’ signature. “Marcus has made a tremendous impact with the sheer volume of runs that he has scored during the first two months of the season,” he said.”He is also a great character and leader which is why we made the decision for him to take over the captaincy in four-day cricket and we are really pleased that he will be here longer-term. Having Marcus signed up for the next two seasons after this one allows us to have continuity and consistency and means we are able to plan further ahead knowing he will be here with us.”Lancashire also announced a £4.7 million operating profit on Wednesday ahead of the club’s annual general meeting, though debt levels remain high ahead of their pending windfall from the sale of the eight Hundred franchises to private investors.

Slater, Clarke keep Notts competitive despite Hill's latest five-for

Visitors graft their way to 228 before Mohammad Abbas removes both Yorkshire openers

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay23-May-2025Nottinghamshire’s Ben Slater and Joe Clarke posted battling half-centuries and new England Lion George Hill claimed five more wickets for Yorkshire during a fascinating opening day of Rothesay County Championship cricket at Headingley.Division One leaders Notts, inserted, were bowled out for 228 by a White Rose side who sat second-bottom ahead of this seventh fixture of the summer.Opener Slater made 52 off 111 balls and Clarke 64 off 151, while Hill’s seam accounted for 5 for 40 from 20 overs – his third haul of five wickets or more in as many matches. He is now the joint-leading wicket-taker in the country with 32.Yorkshire closed on 10 for 2 from 12 overs in reply, Mohammad Abbas striking twice. If things go well for Notts over the next few days, and if they go on to prise the title away from Surrey, this could be a pivotal day. That wasn’t because they dominated. Instead, they showed impressive fortitude in challenging conditions. They could quite easily have been bowled out for 150.Yorkshire constantly challenged, with Jordan Thompson claiming three wickets and new-ball seamer Jack White an excellent 2 for 23 from 16.2 overs.Yes, Notts had some luck. They continually played and missed. But they made decent use of it, and it feels like a useful total even though they lost their last five wickets for 36. Just how useful will become clear on day two. With Clarke and Lyndon James together in a sixth-wicket partnership of 71 either side of tea, that was when the visitors looked most secure.Dom Bess won his first toss in charge as Jonny Bairstow’s replacement. This was the first time in seven matches this season that Yorkshire haven’t batted first. And they started well, with White removing visiting skipper Haseeb Hameed, brilliantly caught one-handed at point by James Wharton diving low to his right – 9 for 1 in the sixth over.Even with a score of 6, Hameed became the first man in Division One to pass 700 runs. With 12 millimetres of grass left on the pitch for Yorkshire’s second home game running, the seamers got plenty of assistance. But Slater repelled the new ball and shared 56 for the second wicket with fellow left-hander Freddie McCann through to late morning. Slater reached his fifth fifty of 2025 off 109 balls.McCann fell just before lunch with the score on 65, caught low down at first slip off Thompson for 28. And when the same bowler clipped Slater’s off-stump shortly after lunch, two balls after he reached 50, the score slipped to 102 for 3 in the 38th over. That was the first of three wickets to fall for 19 runs inside nine overs, with Notts now 121 for 5 in the 47th. Hill bowled Jack Haynes shouldering arms and shortly afterwards bowled South African Kyle Verreynne through the gate.Yorkshire came into this fixture with some significant selection headaches, not least losing captain Bairstow to the Mumbai Indians for the latter stages of the IPL. Hill and White were the standout bowlers. They shared 13 of 25 maidens Yorkshire bowled. Thompson also impressed.Clarke reached his fifty off 123 balls and, with the help of 29 from James, advanced Nottinghamshire’s cause. But Yorkshire hit back to limit the damage. The 71-stand between Clarke and James was broken by Thompson’s third wicket – the latter caught behind by wicketkeeper Harry Duke following a top-edged pull.In the next over, Liam Patterson-White offered Duke a more regulation catch off Hill – 197 for 7 after 73 overs. Hill then had Brett Hutton caught at second slip and Clarke brilliantly caught by Thompson on the run at third-man following an attempted reverse scoop.White wrapped things up by bowling Dillon Pennington after he had heaved a four and six.The visiting overseas seamer Abbas then had openers Adam Lyth and Fin Bean caught behind for 2 apiece before close, and the concern for Yorkshire is that in Pakistani Test star, Notts have the perfect bowler for these conditions.

Lionel Messi vs. Tom Brady: Who has had a better 'football' career?

The Barcelona superstar and Patriots quarterback are both living legends — but which one has been more impressive in their sport?

Lionel Messi and Tom Brady are often considered the greatest of all time in their respective sports. Messi has won everything there is to win on the club level in soccer, while Brady has a handful of Super Bowl rings and can add one more on Sunday. Both have racked up unbelievable amounts of individual honors during their careers on their way to becoming living legends.

Although Brady is 10 years older than Messi, the New England Patriots quarterback got his career off to a later start than the Barcelona superstar. But for nearly two decades the two have been in the global spotlight and have only gotten better and better with no end point in sight.

Which player has accomplished more? Who has had more of an impact on their sport? Goal takes a closer look at who will go down in history with a more impressive career:

    Ballons d'Or/NFL MVP awards

    Messi – 5
    Brady – 2

It may seem strange to even compare the two honors but allow us to explain…

Both the Ballon d'Or and the NFL MVP award are given to the best player in the sport over the year. Despite there being several more teams and players to choose from in soccer, the winner will most likely be someone who has carried his team deep into the Champions League. The NFL is much like the Champions League due to the fact it's a league comprised of the best teams and players in the world competing each week. Long story short, it's equally impressive to individually stand out from the rest in both soccer and the NFL.

It's been a two-man race between Messi and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo for the Ballon d'Or over the past 10 years, with the Argentine forward being named the world's best player a record-tying five times. The NFL seems to have more competition for its MVP award than the Ballon d'Or, as there have been seven different winners over the same span.

But Brady was named MVP only twice during his 17-year career and Messi has won the Ballon d'Or five times over 13 years.

    European Golden Shoes/Passing Touchdowns Leader

    Messi – 4
    Brady – 4

Messi has led all players in Europe in scoring four times, while Brady has led the NFL in touchdown passes in four seasons. Messi has had to compete with thousands of players as Brady is up against only 31 other starting QBs each year. But don't let that fool you.

We can partially credit Messi's goal-scoring totals to the fact Barcelona plays in La Liga, where the Blaugrana are consistently more talented than their opposition most weeks. Messi has had a list of all-time greats playing with him, with players like Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Neymar, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Samuel Eto'o and Luis Suarez sharing the attacking load and making the job a bit easier on the Argentine.

Brady, on the other hand, goes head to head with the best quarterbacks on the planet each week. He also has to face the top defensive players in the world every time he takes the field. On top of that, the talent around Brady has not always been world class. Aside from Randy Moss – who was seemingly past his prime when he joined New England in 2007 – and Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots QB has worked with a list of pass-catchers that is entirely underwhelming. It's telling that the first year Moss and Brady played together they set an NFL record for touchdowns by a duo.

    Champions League titles/Super Bowl wins

    Messi – 4
    Brady – 5

The most realistic comparison of any soccer league in the world to the NFL is the Champions League. The top club competition pits Europe's top teams and players against each other each meeting, with 32 of the best teams in Europe making the group stage. The NFL doesn't have any competing leagues, which makes the 32-team league ultra competitive all season.

Messi has led Barcelona to Champions League titles four times and Brady has a record five Super Bowl trophies to his name. The QB has a very good chance to add another ring against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII.

The fact Brady has won more championships in the NFL than Messi in the Champions League makes this category an easy one to decide.

    La Liga titles/AFC East titles

    Messi – 8
    Brady – 15

How can we compare a four-team NFL division to the 20-team Primera Division? That's a good question but hear us out…

The 32-team NFL is divided up by eight divisions. Brady's Patriots have dominated the AFC East since he became their starting QB, which has given them an easy path to the playoffs almost every season.

La Liga may feature more teams, but recently it's been a two or three-team race between Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico for the title. With the top three in the table earning a Champions League berth, Barca is nearly a lock to play in Europe every year.

But due to the poor play of opposing AFC East teams over the past 18 years and the fact Barcelona has to compete with Real Madrid for first place, it's more impressive for Messi to win La Liga than Brady to win his division.

Ligue 1 Team of the Season: Mbappe and Neymar shine for PSG as Pepe breaks through

Paris Saint-Germain ran out Ligue 1 winners for the second successive season, but there were impressive performers elsewhere

  • Getty Images

    Mike Maignan | Lille

Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan has enjoyed a standout season, which has been recognised by France coach Didier Deschamps, who has called him up for the June international fixtures.

The former PSG youth has proven to be highly reliable for Christophe Galtier’s side, showing the type of consistency that has him tipped to be Les Bleus’ No.1 on a long-term basis.

LOSC finished the season with the best defence in the league, conceding only 30 times, and they owe much to their shot-stopper, who has a particular speciality in saving penalties.

    Kenny Lala | Strasbourg

One of the revelations of the season in Ligue 1 this term, the Strasbourg full-back can count himself unlucky not to have been awarded a call up to the France side.

He was used primarily as a left-sided wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation, which played to his offensive strengths. Over the course of the season, he scored five times and created nine more, finishing outright fourth for assists for all players in Ligue 1.

    Marquinhos | PSG

Paris Saint-Germain signed Marquinhos from Roma in 2013 with the expectation that he would grow into one of Europe’s best defensive players, and that has proven to be the case as he turned in another redoubtable season.

Not only did the Brazilian enjoy another solid campaign in the heart of the rearguard at Parc des Princes, he was used by Thomas Tuchel as a defensive midfielder and grew impressively into that role, too.

    Thiago Silva | PSG

Will turn 35 in September, but the former AC Milan man is just as classy as ever.

A rock-steady performer in the heart of the PSG defence, it is unusual to see him make an error, particularly at Ligue 1 level. No-one in the league who made at least 1000 passes had a higher completion rate.

He is currently fighting a race against time to be fit for Brazil’s Copa America campaign, which might be the last chance he has to participate in a major tournament.

Sergio Ramos, Roy Keane & footballers with a rotten red card record

From midfield enforcers and teak tough defenders to elegant skill players – Goal takes a look at players who have received a litany of red cards

  • Getty Images

    1Zinedine Zidane

Zinedine Zidane is one of the greatest French footballers of all time, possessing prodigious levels of skill, but he had a huge weakness too: his fiery temperament.

Even before his outrageous headbutt to Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final, Zidane had a reputation for losing his head during games, having previously been sent off in the 1998 World Cup for a stamp on Saudi Arabia's Fuad Anwar.

He amassed 12 red cards across his club career too, which is not typical of a player known for his silken grace on the ball.

    2Patrick Vieira

Former Arsenal and France star Patrick Vieira was an imposing figure on the football pitch, but sometimes his temper got the better of him.

A combative, tough-tackling midfielder, Vieira's role as an enforcer involved plenty of risk. However, he frequently miscalculated and ended up on the wrong side of referees more often that he probably would have liked.

The 1990s and early 2000s in the Premier League are defined by Vieira's running battles with Manchester United's Roy Keane, a foe he even notably clashed with off the pitch.

With eight Premier League red cards during his career, Vieira is the division's joint record holder.

    3Mark van Bommel

As if to ram home his reputation as a red card magnet, Mark van Bommel was sent off in the final game of his career after hitting an opponent with an overzealous tackle.

The Netherlands international played for some of the best clubs in the world, such as Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan, but he is not remembered for his elegant style of play.

Rather, the midfielder's snapping tackles and fearlessness are what marked him out. Unfortunately, he didn't always time them well.

    4Francesco Totti

Francesco Totti was one of the most gifted players of his generation, but he also had a mean streak, which saw him pick up 11 red cards in Serie A during his Roma career.

The former Italy international received his marching orders a total of 15 times while playing for the Giallorossi and was also controversially sent off at the 2002 World Cup.

Lionel Messi's La Liga debut for Barcelona – Who were his team-mates and where are they now?

The Argentine came on as a substitute for Deco on his La Liga debut for Barcelona against Espanyol in 2004…

Lionel Messi, an FC Barcelona youth product, was promoted to the senior team during the 2004-05 season and he made his La Liga debut for the club on October 16, 2004, against city rivals Espanyol.

The Argentine came on as a substitute replacing Deco in the 82nd minute of the match. At the age of 17 years and three months, Messi became the youngest player to represent Barcelona in an official competition.

Although Messi had played for the Barcelona senior team a year before against FC Porto, it was a friendly tie between the two clubs and not an official game.

The Argentine's debut La Liga match has two unusual India connections. Former FC Goa defender Carlos Pena was in the matchday squad but did not feature in the match. Also, former Bengaluru FC and Hyderabad FC coach Albert Roca was a part of Frank Rijkaard's coaching team when Messi played his first game.

Since the Espanyol tie in 2004, Messi appeared in a total of 520 La Liga matches donning the Barcelona shirt. He also became the most-capped Barcelona player of all time with 778 matches under his belt.

Let us take a look at the players who played alongside Messi in his La Liga debut for Barcelona and where are they now?

    1Victor Valdes – GK

A Barcelona academy product, Victor Valdes played for the club for 12 years from 2002 to 2014 after which he joined Manchester United. During the 2015-16 season, Valdes was sent on loan to Belgian side Standard Liege. In 2017, Valdes retired from professional football after playing a year at Middlesbrough.

In 2018, Valdes completed his UEFA Pro Licence and joined a local Madrid club ED Moratalaz's youth team. In 2019, he returned to Barcelona and took charge of the club's Juvenil A side as their head coach. Since 2020, he is managing a local Barcelona club UA Horta.

    2Juliano Belletti – RB

The Brazilian right-back joined Barcelona in 2004 and played at the club for three seasons before joining Chelsea. He retired from professional football in 2011 after suffering from a serious Achilles tendon injury.

In February 2021, Belletti joined Brazilian Serie B club Cruzeiro as their assistant manager.

    3Carles Puyol – CB

Club legend and former captain Carles Puyol played for Barcelona all through his career from 1999 to 2014. He won all major trophies with Spanish giants which include six La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues. Puyol is the club's fifth most-capped player of all time with 593 appearances under his belt.

The 10 best Argentina World Cup kits of all time

The 2022 World Cup champions have worn some classic kits over the years

Argentina’s World Cup victory this year wasn’t just a historic occasion for the country and for Lionel Messi. It was also a triumph of two of the tournament’s best kits over their less-deserving rivals. While both of the 2022 kits – particularly the away shirt – were strong designs, they fit in with some other legendary Argentina kits over the years. So with that in mind, and to celebrate the Argentinian victory, here are the nation’s 10 best-ever World Cup kits.

    102006 Away

While Argentina have stuck to their dark blue away shirt for almost their entire history, they haven’t been afraid of experimenting with new detailing across the design. In 2006, adidas added white and light blue sections to the shirt, while the adidas Three Stripe branding alternated between the two colours. The whole shirt was finished with some thin gold sections, perfect for a Messi to make his World Cup debut (a 6-0 win against Serbia and Montenegro, if you’re interested).

    92014 Home

While it’s the 2014 away kit that was associated with Argentina and Messi’s near-miss in 2014, the final was the only time they wore the shirt. For the rest of the tournament, they opted for their classic stripes. That year’s design featured the addition of a black trim – for the first time since the 2006 World Cup – as well as a slight gradient effect on each of the light blue stripes and subtle diagonal stripe detailing across the centre.

    81998 Away

Argentina’s 1998 home kit was a simple masterclass – all thick blue stripes and a smart black collar – but it's that year’s away shirt that will go down in history. It was in the dark blue change kit, complete with a huge light blue V neck and stripes down each side, that Argentina took on England. By the end of the match, Michael Owen had cemented himself as a great in the making, David Beckham had been sent off and Argentina had won on penalties.

    72022 Home

Whatever you think of the 2022 home kit – a solid if unspectacular design – it will forever be the shirt in which Lionel Messi won the World Cup. As if that isn’t enough, there are some design touches that help to elevate it beyond just the classic Albiceleste colours, including the two thinner lines on the back and the gold sun on the back of the neck. In the end, it was a worthy companion for Messi’s coronation.

Cristiano Ronaldo to Lionel Messi – Who are the top 10 goalscorers from penalties in the 21st century?

Here are the ten players who have scored the most number of goals from penalties in the 21st century…

Cristiano Ronaldo is the most successful player when it comes to scoring from the penalty spot in the 21st century. Out of the 819 goals the Al-Nassr player scored so far in his career, 146 came from penalties.

Ronaldo is followed by his close rival Lionel Messi and AS Roma and Italy legend Francesco Totti. While Messi has netted 108 times from the penalty spot, Totti has converted 86 spot-kicks in his illustrious career.

Other than Ronaldo and Messi, the other two active players to feature in the list of highest goalscorers from penalties are Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani.

Let us take a look at the ten highest goalscorers from penalties in the 21st century.
