If a prize existed for Captain of the Tournament, Brendon McCullum would have been the only possible winner. His aggressive style responsible for dragging the whole of New Zealand on a memorable journey

As Michael Clarke and his team-mates held the World Cup aloft on the MCG outfield on Sunday night, the New Zealanders stood and clapped politely. Then they filed away one by one, ready to head indoors to commiserate. Brendon McCullum was the last man standing, the last one watching the Australians and applauding. It could have been no other way. There is no such award but if a prize existed for Captain of the Tournament, McCullum would have been the only possible winner. His approach has been infectious, his aggressive style responsible not only for New Zealand reaching their first World Cup final, but for dragging the entire nation with them on the journey. And he has done it with incomparable class. That continued during and after a loss that must have been heartbreaking. As Clarke walked off having been dismissed for 74, with Australia nine runs from victory in his last ODI, McCullum was the first to run over and shake Clarke’s hand. Dignified to the end, McCullum refused to offer excuses for his team’s loss. Sometimes, he said, you just have to doff your cap to the winner.”Tonight’s performance is somewhat disappointing but at the same time Australia played better,” McCullum said. “It came down to one game. We gave ourselves an opportunity in this tournament. With so much on the line, ultimately Australia stepped up and were too good for us on the night. It’s a credit to them that they were able to do so on the big occasion.”I’m really proud of the guys. I thought the way we played throughout this tournament, the brand of cricket we played, we’ve entertained the people and left nothing out there. It’s been one hell of a ride and something we’ll remember for the rest of our lives. It would have been great to have got the silverware, but it wasn’t to be.”I think what we were able to achieve in this tournament will last a long time, the friendships we created the experiences we’ve had, and the people we’ve been able to inspire throughout the tournament is something we’re really proud of. It’s never nice running second, but sometimes you’ve got to doff your cap to the winner.”Clarke, he said, deserved to bow out of the one-day game a World Cup-winning captain. Of course, this might also be the last ODI for members of the New Zealand side, most notably the 36-year-old Daniel Vettori. There have even been suggestions McCullum might follow Clarke in quitting the ODI game to focus on Tests. But McCullum insisted today was about Australia’s triumph.”There may be guys within our group who will retire,” McCullum said. “We’ll let the dust settle on this final and we certainly won’t look to grab any headlines in the next couple of days, because they belong to Australia and they’ve earned the right to do so. We’ll be gracious in defeat, and then we’ll work out a plan in the next couple of days for some guys who may look to retire. But I think it’s the right thing to allow Australia to bask in the glory of their success.”A captain who was just lost the World Cup final could be forgiven for being churlish. That is not McCullum’s way. He was as good-natured after this loss as he ever is. When he tried to locate a New Zealand journalist asking a question in the packed press conference, the reporter said “over here at wide mid-off”. The next questioner was next to him. “Two catchers!” McCullum quipped. It was just one of a handful of friendly jokes McCullum shared with the press after the game. It would have been no different had they won. That is just the type of character McCullum is. And they gave themselves a chance of setting the game up by batting first, although chasing has been their more regular method through this tournament. They might have been better off losing the toss.”I thought it was a good toss to win at the time,” McCullum said. “Michael Clarke also said that he would have batted. The pitch played okay, and that was testament to the partnership we were able to create with Ross and Grant. They were able to swing the ball early on and that posed a few problems.”If we’d lost the toss and found ourselves bowling, who knows, they might have got 400 the way they played today. You can’t have those regrets. We won the toss, we took the aggressive option, that’s what we wanted to do, runs on the board in the final. If we’d made 260 or 280 we might have been having a different conversation now.”Whatever the result, New Zealand have won a lot of friends throughout this campaign, both at home and around the world. For the first time after six lost World Cup semi-finals, they reached a decider. Whatever McCullum’s own future, he hopes that the legacy created by this side, which went through undefeated in eight matches at home before this final, will live on.”Hopefully the style of cricket and the things we’ve been able to implement with this team and the brand we’re trying to play will remain and develop over the next little while,” he said. “Hopefully that will the filter down to our domestic cricket as well and we’ll get some youngsters start to play the game, and try and play it the same way we’ve tried to operate in this World Cup.”Once you’re in the final you give yourself an opportunity to win it. If we can keep making finals we’ll win one at some point.”

A favor do clube do Parque São Jorge, o bom retrospecto do técnico Fábio Carille contra o rival do Morumbi.
TABELA >Confira a classificação atualizada do Campeonato Brasileiro

England’s determination to play a more adventurous brand of cricket in one-day cricket encourages captain Eoin Morgan to suggest they are finally on the right track

As England’s World Cup campaign came to its premature end, the team sat in the dressing room in Sydney and held what they term as “an honesty meeting”.After an initial – and by most accounts somewhat awkward – silence, one of the players started to talk. And while versions differ a little, the general consensus is that Ravi Bopara then delivered some home truths that cut to the heart of England’s problems.Despite all the brave talk of how aggressively England were going to play at the World Cup, Bopara said, they still played the same timid cricket that had failed in the past. And, if they were going to improve their record – they have a wretched World Cup history since reaching the final in 1992 – things had to change.Bopara’s words did not please all his colleagues. But there was a great deal of truth in them and they were largely echoed by Eoin Morgan on Monday as he looked ahead the Royal London ODI series against New Zealand.”For a long time now, we’ve been behind the 8-ball in one-day cricket,” Morgan said. “We’ve fallen behind by a long way and it’s time for a catch-up.”After the World Cup we’ve come back and said we need to change the way we play and the proof in that is the selections that we have made. We’ve selected guys who play a different brand of cricket and we don’t want that to change once they put the England shirt on.”The guys we have brought in do something different and we want that to continue. If they play as well as they have done in county cricket then it will be very exciting.”It was the senior players who disappointed most at the World Cup. Morgan struggled for runs, Ian Bell struggled to bat the tempo required and failed in the key games, while both James Anderson and Stuart Broad were unable to bowl the full length required to utilise the new ball. The last three, and Bopara, have all been dropped and may struggle to win a recall.Morgan hails Reeve insights
Eoin Morgan has hailed the contribution of Dermot Reeve, the former England all-rounder, who spent a day with England’s limited-overs squad in an advisory capacity. The news of Reeve’s involvement with the squad – revealed by ESPNcricinfo on Sunday – surprised some, but Morgan countered that Reeve’s experience as a hugely successful and innovative limited-overs players rendered him an ideal voice in the dressing room. Morgan also explained that Reeve’s perspective on the role of the game in players’ lives, could also prove beneficial to young men who the management hope will relax and enjoy the experience. “We are trying to connect as much as we can with past players and to have someone like Dermot around is very good,” Morgan said. “He is a very knowledgeable character. It’s important – particularly for the younger guys coming into the squad – to recognise that there is a lot more to playing for England than just pulling on the jersey and he emphasised that. Simple points coming from him to younger guys who have looked up to him as kids hold a lot of weight.”
There may be a temptation to return to them in time, though. The next two global ODI tournaments (the 2017 Champions Trophy and the 2019 World Cup) are both to be staged in relatively early season in England when a case could be made to select batsmen with a tight defensive technique and bowlers with experience. And, with such an aggressive batting line-up, there will surely be times when this young England side come unstuck. But Morgan, who will have a voice in the selection of both limited-overs squads while he remains as captain, is adamant that this squad is more than a reaction to the World Cup debacle and instead represents a brave new era.”It’s very important to recognise that it won’t come off all the time,” Morgan said. “But the intention of playing in the right manner is key and has to be key for a long period of time. Otherwise, if you ditch it after a few games, it won’t work.”In the new-look side, there will be more opportunity given to the likes of Ben Stokes, who is expected to bat at No. 4, and Jos Buttler, anticipated at No. 6, which could well mean no place for James Taylor.Morgan, who has scored only 491 runs in his last 29 ODIs (including nearly 25% of them in one innings) at an average of just 18.88, needs a decent series, or Taylor could be pushing for his place in the side and as captain.Jason Roy and Alex Hales will open the batting, which could threaten the long-term position of Moeen Ali, who was omitted from the squad to gain some red ball bowling time ahead of the Ashes, with Joe Root expected to bat at No. 3. Buttler remains vice-captain.Morgan insists that he feels “a lot more comfortable” with the bat than he did during the World Cup and credits his spell at the IPL for the improvement. That led him to suggest, not for the first time, that English domestic competitions had to be improved if more young players were going to graduate to the international teams prepared for the standard of cricket.”For some reason I always go to the IPL and come back a better player,” he said. “That has been the case this year. I feel a lot more comfortable with where I’m at.”In the ideal world we would have our own world-renowned domestic tournament that everybody wants to play in and you would see our younger guys flourish in what would be a very high standard of cricket. They would be put under pressure the majority of times they go out to bat, bowl or field. And that’s what we want.”We have heard much of this before, of course. But this time, as the ECB look at rescheduling the domestic season, it looks almost inevitable that the County Championship will be reduced to 12 games each per county with more emphasis given on limited-overs formats. Andrew Strauss, the director of England cricket, favours 10 gamesBut Morgan, at least, feels that, in partnership with Trevor Bayliss and Strauss, there is a common accord which can bring an improvement in England’s one-day performances.”Speaking with Strauss, he feels there is to be a difference between Tests and one dayers and a bigger priority on white ball cricket,” Morgan said. “That is the change that made me think, ‘hold on, we are actually going to make some progress here.’ I think there are plans being put in place to prioritise tournaments in the future instead of making overloading with Tests the priority.”Trevor’s strategy revolves around having athletes in your side – gun fielders – and then a couple of specifics: guys being able to turn the ball both ways and having your quicks looking constantly to take wickets and being aggressive with the bat. My experience with him has been brilliant.”We’re all on the same page as over the direction that we want to take this team and the brand of cricket we want to play. It might still take a bit of time but I’ll certainly be involved in selection, so I’ve got the squad I wanted.”

Gerrie Snyman’s 62 off 35 balls propelled Namibia to a seven-wicket win with 7.1 overs to spare after their bowlers had dismissed USA for a paltry 113
The report by Peter Della Penna in Belfast13-Jul-2015USA struggled to 113 for 8, having wasted another good start from the top order, before they were knocked out by a Gerrie Snyman onslaught. His 62 off 35 balls propelled Namibia to a seven-wicket win with 7.1 overs to spare at Stormont. That frenetic pace proved useful considering the rain theat. The start was delayed by an hour, and Namibia began their chase amid a drizzle. But Snyman and his opening partner Stephen Baard rocketed to 63 for 0 in the Powerplay, ensuring they were well ahead on Duckworth-Lewis in the event the match had to be called after five overs.USA did themselves no favours with their no-ball issues rearing back up. Snyman caught off one when he was only 7. Things got progressively worse. Japen Patel dropped Snyman when the batsman was on 21; the ball tipped over for six. When the opportunity to redeem himself came, Japen misjudged another catch at deep point to give Baard a life on 15.Snyman made the most of his chances, repeatedly smashing the bowlers over mid-on and brought up his fifty in 28 balls. Muhammad Ghous, the USA captain, became so desperate to curtail Snyman that at one point he put six fielders on the leg side before the on-field umpires warned him that it would result in a no-ball.Snyman was eventually caught at long-on off Alex Amsterdam to conclude a 97-run opening stand in 10 overs. The only other wickets to fall came courtesy legspinner Timil Patel. An inside edge from Baard dribbled onto his stumps, while Raymond van Schoor was caught at deep midwicket. Sarel Burger ended the game four balls later with a flick to midwicket, giving Namibia’s net run rate a significant boost in the event of a tiebreaker at the end of the group stage.USA have lost three out of three games now. Today, six of their batsmen fell for single-figures. Only Akeem Dodson with 49 off 41 balls could hold Namibia off. He capitalised on their strategy of bowling short. Four of his eight boundaries came off pull shots and he dominated a 35-run stand with Timothy Surujbally, before Surujbally ran himself out for 3.USA’s innings started to unravel when left-arm spinner Bernard Scholtz was introduced in the eighth over. He nabbed Nicholas Standford leg before as the batsman defended down the wrong line. Then Dodson gave it away looking for a glory shot over long-off and was caught by Craig Williams.Dodson’s wicket sparked a collapse – four wickets for 16 runs. Adil Bhatti was foxed by a slower ball from Burger and was pinned in front. Then Namibia’s sharp fielding produced two run-outs. Scholtz’s throw from deep midwicket beat Japen’s dive at the non-striker’s end as he was looking for a second. Ghous called for a suicidal run and third man on the circle found him short by five yards.Amsterdam was the eighth wicket to fall, top edging a pull for 18. Timil and Jasdeep Singh batted out the remaining nine balls to finish unbeaten on 8 and 7 respectively.
