New Zealand take control on bowlers' day

Sri Lanka’s top order slumped against the swinging ball after their bowlers had restricted New Zealand to 221 in the first innings

The Report by Devashish Fuloria02-Jan-2015

Kane Williamson was the only batsman who appeared comfortable•Getty Images

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsGiven that there was not much difference in the colour of the pitch from the adjoining square, it was a “pretty easy decision” for Angelo Mathews to bowl after winning the toss at Basin Reserve. Add to that overcast skies and the conditions appeared tailor-made for seamers. That decision seemed to have backfired as no swing or seam was apparent and New Zealand were untroubled till after lunch, scoring at more than four an over. However, the Sri Lanka seamers, led by Nuwan Pradeep and buoyed by the dismissal of Brendon McCullum for a two-ball duck, came back strongly in the second session as New Zealand lost their last eight wickets for 80 runs to be bowled out soon after tea. However, much of that early advantage was eroded by the end of the day as Sri Lanka’s top order slumped against the moving ball. The swing that the Sri Lankans had been searching for, the New Zealand bowlers found straightaway. Thirteen wickets fell in the last two sessions, five of them Sri Lankan, and the visitors were now in danger of conceding a big first-innings lead.Sangakkara completes 12000 Test runs

12000 Kumar Sangakkara became only the fifth batsman to score 12000-plus runs in Tests and the fastest to the landmark, having reached it in his 223rd innings. Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting both took 247 innings.

15 Wickets that fell on day one in Wellington – only the second instance of 15 or more wickets falling on the first day of a Test in New Zealand. The only other time was in 1974 when 18 wickets fell on the first day’s play of a Test between the hosts and Australia. Coincidentally, in that Test Australia were all out on an identical score of 221, before New Zealand lost eight wickets before the close of play.

40 Number of innings between Brendon McCullum’s last duck and his zero in this Test. McCullum’s previous duck had come against India in the first innings of the Bangalore Test in 2012. Up to that innings, McCullum had averaged a duck every 11 innings in Tests. The 40-innings gap coincided with a productive period for McCullum in Tests, during which he scored 1893 runs at an average of 48.53 with five hundreds and five fifties.

4 Wickets taken by Nuwan Pradeeep in New Zealand’s first innings at an average of 15.75 runs per wicket. Pradeep had taken just 14 wickets in his last eight Tests, giving away 1019 runs, at an average of 72.78. After this innings, his bowling average has come down to 60.11. He has now taken 18 wickets in 17 innings at a strike rate of 86.8 and an economy of 4.15.

12.33 Lahiru Thirimanne’s batting average since his last hundred in Tests, against Bangladesh in Galle in 2013. In 14 innings since then Thirimanne has made 148 runs and has been out for four ducks.

Trent Boult made the first strike, forcing an outside edge from Dimuth Karunaratne in his fifth over, before Doug Bracewell, chosen over Neil Wagner specifically for this pitch, struck in consecutive overs to leave Sri Lanka wobbling at 29 for 3. Mathews resisted for a while before being squared up by an outswinger from Tim Southee, while Prasanna Jayawardene edged Bracewell to second slip off the last delivery of the day. The hopes of any rearguard action rested solely on Kumar Sangakkara, who crossed the personal landmark of 12,000 Test runs, and showed signs of comfort towards the end as his trademark cover drive made appearance. The Basin Reserve strip had promised more for the bowlers than the green Hagley Oval pitch last week on which McCullum had trampled on Sri Lanka’s hopes. Similar fate seemed in store for the visitors as Kane Wiliamson and Ross Taylor added 79 runs in 95 balls to lift New Zealand to 141 for 2, the toss win appearing a lost opportunity. That was till one Pradeep delivery moved off the pitch and caught the inside edge of Taylor’s bat to rattle the stumps.Next over, McCullum inside-edged a Suranga Lakmal delivery on to his stumps playing a shot that has been his solid ally over the past 12 months – the back-foot punch. What difference can a change of date make in someone’s fortunes? Ask McCullum. In 2014, he couldn’t make a mistake even if he wanted to. He was scoring runs at home, he was scoring them away, he was being rock solid and he was being downright disrespectful to bowlers. His previous innings at Basin Reserve – 302 against India – was the highlight of a magnificent year for which he was handed the key to the city by the mayor of Wellington during the lunch break. The first innings of 2015, though, turned out to be brief and it was the inspiration Sri Lanka were looking for after being betrayed by the greenery. From 141 for 2, New Zealand were 142 for 4.Although there was still no alarming help from the pitch, Sri Lanka’s bowlers stuck to better lines and extracted just enough to create pressure on the batsmen. James Neesham, who had scored a century on debut at this ground a year ago, played a loose drive to be caught behind off Pradeep, then BJ Watling steered a wide delivery from Mathews into the hands of first slip. When Dhammika Prasad induced a false shot from Williamson five balls later, Sri Lanka had more or less arrived where they would have aimed to be at tea – into the New Zealand tail. Not too long before, Williamson reached his half-century from 75 balls with a streaky boundary through the slip cordon. That, however, was one of the few times he had not been in control as he showed little sign of new-year blues. After being stuck on zero for 16 balls, he had registered his first runs of the year with consecutive boundaries off Mathews. Once he had some runs on the board, he continued to score at an effortlessly quick pace without playing expansive shots, thus going almost unnoticed during his innings. Williamson’s dismissal – he played on just like Taylor and McCullum – showed that despite the ball not doing much, scoring runs was not easy on the pitch.Quick runs were scored in the first session when the Sri Lanka bowlers couldn’t find the right length. As a result, the false shots appeared only when the batsmen became ambitious. One of them accounted for Tom Latham as he played at a back of a length Lakmal delivery from round the wicket. New Zealand had scored 62 when Hamish Rutherford committed the same mistake as Latham – fishing at one away from his body – and fell after yet another start. It has been 15 innings since he scored his only half-century in Tests, but his 37 was the second-highest score on a whirlwind day.

England environment 'not good' for Morgan

Those championing the cause of Irish cricket have been heard louder than ever since their victory over West Indies on Monday and now a second voice has bemoaned the allegiance of Eoin Morgan.

Eoin Morgan has found the going very tough since taking over as England one-day captain•ICC

Those championing the cause of Irish cricket have been heard louder than ever since their victory over West Indies on Monday and now a second voice has bemoaned the allegiance of Eoin Morgan.Kyle McCallan, who played 39 ODIs for Ireland from 2006 to 2009, claimed the England environment is “not good” for Morgan and he would be excelling if he were part of the Ireland squad at the World Cup.McCallan follows Ireland selector Alan Lewis in raising displeasure over Morgan’s decision to play for England. Lewis described the situation as “irritating”.Morgan has seen the pressure ramp up since taking over as England one-day captain just before Christmas and has made four ducks in his last five innings – a score of just 2 breaking the sequence. And the pressure created by the UK media is hindering Morgan, according to McCallan: “If Eoin Morgan was currently in the Irish side he would be excelling,” he told the podcast. “He is a world-class cricketer, we saw that only recently with a hundred against India.”I just think the environment that the English cricket team live in, it’s not good in terms of getting the best out of the players. The media build them up and then like to knock them down.”England were hammered in their World Cup opener against Australia, while Ireland enjoyed a not-entirely unexpected victory over West Indies. The Ireland squad have become used to punching above their weight with few changes from the side that tipped up England so spectacularly four years ago.”Looking at the Ireland XI that played against West Indies there’s only three that weren’t there in 2011,” McCallan said. “Whereas there only three that were in the England squad. So there’s flux and change in the England camp compared to the stability in the Irish camp, forced stability maybe because we don’t have the resources they have.”But I have no doubt that if Eoin Morgan were playing for Ireland he would be exhibiting a completely different brand of confidence compared to at the moment with the significant pressure he’s under.”McCallan, who played for Ireland at the 2007 World Cup, had a further dig at the ECB and their reluctance to fully embrace their neighbours.”We have a huge degree of admiration in the UK,” McCallan said. “They agree here that these results are no longer a shock and we’re no longer minnows. There’s sympathy for the Irish cause and they see the progress that’s been made since 2007.”But the ECB have a vested interest in how much Irish cricket develops. We still have two of our own not available for Ireland because they’ve chosen the English route and it’s another barrier. From the ECB’s point of view, they want to maintain the status quo and have the best of both worlds.”

Injury forces Hamilton-Brown retirement

Sussex batsman Rory Hamilton-Brown has unexpectedly been forced to retire at the age of 27 due to injury

Sussex batsman Rory Hamilton-Brown has unexpectedly been forced to retire at the age of 27 due to injury. Hamilton-Brown, who five years ago became Surrey’s youngest captain in more than a century, has not played since June 2014 because of a wrist problem that failed to respond to surgery. An aggressive batsman, outstanding fielder and flat offspinner with a good quicker ball, he had all basic the ingredients to flourish in the modern limited-overs game. A first-class strike-rate of 72.18 might suggest a certain recklessness, but it also underlined his power and positivity.Perhaps the burden of captaincy at Surrey stunted his development. Originally an England Under-19 captain, he was appointed to the Surrey job by Chris Adams, who he had played with at Sussex. The experiment seemed to be progressing well enough when Hamilton-Brown led them to the CB40 trophy and Championship promotion in 2011. The future looked bright.Instead, his career – his life, perhaps – may be defined by the tragic events of June 2012. The death of his old friend and housemate, Tom Maynard, in an accident on the London Underground cast a pall over many of those most closely associated and Hamilton-Brown, in particular, never seemed to fully emerge from under the cloud. He initially resigned the Surrey captaincy before moving back to Sussex, where he had enjoyed a successful two-year spell, ahead of the 2013 season.”It is with regret that I am having to retire from cricket,” Hamilton-Brown said. “I would like to thank my family for their care and support over the course of my career. I would also like to thank both Sussex and Surrey for giving me the chance to have the best job in the world for 10 years and all the coaches and staff that I have worked with along the way.”It has been a privilege to play with and against some fantastic players and people all over the world. I will leave the game with a heavy heart but take with me many amazing memories and friends for life.”A Millfield schoolboy who came through Surrey’s academy, Hamilton-Brown was at one time considered a potential candidate for England, particularly in the limited-overs formats where his bowling provided a useful second string. As well as leading Surrey to the CB40 title, he was part of the Sussex side that won the Twenty20 Cup and Pro40 competitions in 2009.”We’re really sorry that Rory has had to retire from the game,” Mark Robinson, Sussex’s cricket manager, said. “He has always worked incredibly hard during his time at Sussex and has been a popular member of the club with players and staff alike.”All we can do at this point is to wish him all the best for the next chapter in his life and we look forward to seeing him around the ground in a more social capacity for many years to come.”It is a sad end to a career that promised much.

Punjab, Gujarat through to final

Group B Siddarth Kaul and Mandeep Singh delivered combined figures of 8-0-32-6 to skittle out Rajasthan for 101 and lead Punjab to the final. Mandeep followed up his career-best figures of 3 for 21 with an 18-ball 29, as Punjab chased down the target with six wickets in hand.Having opted to bat, Rajasthan were rattled early and were reduced to 25 for 3, with Shubek Gill dismissing Ankit Lamba and Arjit Gupta in the space of three balls. Sourabh Chauhan (13), Ashok Menaria (18), Rajesh Bishnoi (16), Puneet Yadav (12) all got starts, but none managed a substantial contribution, as Rajasthan slumped to 96 for 8, Mandeep dismantling the middle order. Kaul then wiped off the tail with a double-strike in the penultimate over.Punjab themselves endured a top-order wobble, losing both their openers to Pankaj Singh inside three overs, but Mandeep and Taruwar Kohli added 41 to steady the chase. Though both perished at the brink of victory, Gurkeerat Singh (27*) and Himanshu Chawla (12) completed the formalities by the 17th over.Fifties from Sagar Kerkar and Shashank Singh guided Mumbai to a consolation win over Hyderabad in Cuttack.Having opted to bat, Mumbai had an early setback when Ravi Kiran was bowled Jay Bista for 4 off 11 balls. Sufiyan Shaikh, though, made a brisk 41 to rebuild the innings before he was dismissed by Hanuma Vihari. Sagar Kerkar and Sashank Singh then took charge of the innings, crashing 92 together in only 7.3 overs. The stand ended when Shashank was run out in the final over, but Siddharth Chitnis took 12 off the last three balls to power Mumbai to 186.Vihari led Hyderabad’s chase with 81 off 50 balls but lacked substantial support from the other end with the next best score being Bavanaka Sandeep’s 20. Sidak Singh and Prathamesh Dake picked up three wickets each to dent the chase as Hyderabad fell 25 short of the target. Group A Three-wicket hauls from Rush Kalaria and Rohit Dahiya bowled Andhra out for 127, setting Gujarat on the path to the final after four wins in as many Super League matches. The Andhra top order was wrecked as they fell to 36 for 3 after being put in. Captain Mohammad Kaif then counterattacked his way to 58 off 46 balls, aided by twenties from Naren Reddy and Jyothi Sai Krishna. However, Andhra’s hopes of posting a competitive total faded away, as they went from 110 for 4 to 127 all out, Kalaria and Dahiya triggering the collapse.Smith Patel ensured Gujarat’s chase got off to a positive start, despite the early loss of Priyank Kirit Panchal. Manpreet Juneja too did not last long, but Patel carried on to make 51 off 48 balls before being undone by KV Sasikanth in the 15th over. By then he had hit nine fours and put on 63 for the third wicket with Rujul Bhatt.Rujul remained unbeaten on 44 off 25 balls to seal the chase with seven wickets in hand.Pankaj Jaiswal returned impressive figures of 3.4-0-12-4 to help Himachal Pradesh successfully defend 145 against Madhya Pradesh in Bhubaneswar. He was ably backed up by Shresth Nirmohi’s 3 for 20 as HP prevailed by eight runs. The result, however, was inconsequential, with both teams out of the running for a place in the final.MP were rocked early in the chase, courtesy Jaiswal, who removed Jajaj Saxena and Zafar Ali for ducks. This grew into full-fledged trouble when Mohnish Mishra and Udit Birla departed in successive overs. However, Parth Sahani (47) combined well with Harpreet Singh (40) to bail them out with a rapid 79-run partnership.Another collapse, though, meant they lost their last five wickets for only 27, Jaiswal accounting for Sahani and No. 10 Puneet Datey in the final over. After being inserted, HP lost Abhimanyu Rana to Yogesh Rawat in the second over, but Raghav Dhawan and Prashant Chopra got together, adding 75 to stabilise the innings. Paras Dogra (19 off 13 balls) and Bipul Sharma (15 off 5 balls) then scrambled some quick runs to steer their side to 145, which proved enough at the end.

Nino Paraíba chutou, a bola desviou no adversário e matou o goleiro do Leão.

Fernandão bateu no canto direito e a bola triscou o poste.
