Vincent to face CLT20 charges

Lou Vincent will be charged with fixing offences under the anti-corruption code of the Champions League Twenty20 tournament, jointly administered by the governing bodies of India, Australia and South Africa

Lou Vincent will be charged with fixing offences under the anti-corruption code of the Champions League Twenty20 tournament, jointly administered by the governing bodies of India, Australia and South Africa.ESPNcricinfo understands the charges will relate to Vincent’s appearances for the Auckland Aces at both the 2011 edition of the tournament, held in India, and the 2012 event in South Africa.Auckland lost both of their qualifying matches in 2011 but reached the main draw the following year, with Vincent taking part in every match. The charges, reportedly being prepared by Cricket Australia’s general manager of legal and business affairs and Champions League technical director Dean Kino, are expected to be formally laid next month after the conclusion of the IPL.They will follow the revelation that the ECB has charged Vincent and a fellow former Sussex team-mate, Naved Arif, with fixing offences for a county limited-overs match in August 2011.Vincent’s charges are the first fruit of a long-running investigation conducted jointly by the ICC’s anti-corruption and security unit, in conjunction with integrity officials in England, Australia and India.Under its present code, the ACSU is not permitted to fully pursue investigations or initiate charges against players for offences related to domestic matches in any format, leaving the onus upon boards responsible for the tournaments in which alleged offences have taken place to do so.CLT20 charges against Vincent will not be formally announced, as the tournament’s anti-corruption code forbids the publication of charges or the naming of “participants” until the case has been heard by a disciplinary committee and a finding reached. This clause is in line with the anti-corruption codes of Cricket Australia, the BCCI and the ICC, which all stipulate that players are not to be officially named until the case has been concluded. The ECB’s anti-corruption code states that a name can be released when the charge has been laid. After news of the charges laid by the ECB, Vincent issued a statement through his lawyer acknowledging that further charges were likely and saying it proved he had not made any plea-bargains with the ICC.”The fact of the charges, and more are likely, dispel any notions of a plea bargain having been done as unfortunately appears to be wrongly suggested by others.”

Neesham, Benn star on see-saw day

Sulieman Benn picked up five wickets to limit New Zealand to 293. Jimmy Neesham scored a busy fifty and helped New Zealand keep a quick tempo as they recovered from 194 for 7

Jimmy Neesham occupies the No.6 position for New Zealand. Judging from the evidence in Barbados, he has the potential to bat much higher. The composure he showed while the rest of the middle-order was prised out was remarkable and more importantly much needed to push New Zealand to 293. Hometown boy Sulieman Benn coaxed a dry pitch to lend him turn and bounce in exchange for his steadfast accuracy, but his 5 for 93 lost a little of its shine as the day wound down. Mark Craig proved a thorn again, contributing an unbeaten 46 to remedy a situation that had been 194 for 7.Chris Gayle and Kraigg Brathwaite survived nine overs till time but West Indies will be wary of being a batsman short. They had opted for a five-man attack, handing a debut to Jason Holder, and would be pleased with their openers’ positive display.West Indies ended a trend of five losses in six games across 2013-14 in Port-of-Spain and their new-look side could do with a series win. Benn epitomised that desperation and accounted for a set Kane Williamson, an aggressive Brendon McCullum, BJ Watling, whose doggedness is not to be underestimated, and Tim Southee, whose penchant for six-hitting could have hurt West Indies.Benn forced the batsman to play more often than not, a ploy that usually provides dividends when the deck offers a little grip. His high-arm action and strong pivot of the hip helped the ball grip onto the pitch. He troubled both Williamson and Ross Taylor despite their comfort against the rest of the attack during a smart 74-run partnership for the third wicket. Benn bowled unchanged from lunch until the last over before tea and also contributed in the field with a stunning grab, diving to his right at gully to cut a fluent Taylor short.Yet for all the threat Benn posed, the other end could not keep up. Neesham was aware of that. His resolve indicated he may have also known New Zealand haven’t won a series against a top-eight nation away from home in a decade. He targeted the seamers – a wayward Jerome Taylor was whipped for 21 off 13 balls. His comfort was no less against spin. Before lunch, he had worked on camping on his back foot unless the bowler was too generous with his flight. However, as his confidence grew he eased down the track to unsettle the status quo. There was turn and bounce available as early as an hour and a half into the Test. But Neesham’s intent matched his execution, as 10 fours and a six would suggest.Neesham’s crispness ensured the run-rate hovered around the four-per-over mark and orchestrated a slump in West Indies’ body language. They weren’t helped by a recalled Shane Shillingford looking off his best. The offspinner struggled to elicit the same kind of help as Benn and was often guilty of bowling too short or too full. West Indies had conceded 122 runs between lunch and tea, but ripped out most of the middle order. The hosts should have been buoyant, when play resumed but sloppy fielding crept into their play. They waited for the tail to roll over and Craig and Neesham exploited that dip in intensity. The duo cultivated 64 runs from 17.2 overs to force some respect to New Zealand’s total. There seems to be a jinx on the opening partnership for New Zealand. Three different combinations have been attempted in the past 15 months, discounting Brendon McCullum’s forced promotion in Port-of-Spain, and only once has the 100-run mark been crossed. A revival was not on the cards as Kemar Roach hit an excellent length. Hamish Rutherford chipped to mid-on and Tom Latham was worked over intelligently – a few balls darting across him and then a full, fast one swerved into his back pad plumb in front of middle. Roach finished with 4 for 61.Taylor and Williamson were cautious early on, but they were not indifferent towards scoring opportunities. Sixteen fours were hit in the morning session, with the above two scoring 13 of them. Jerome Taylor was the leak – he floated a half-volley that was caressed to the boundary by Latham to kick the match off and conceded eight further fours and a six. The discipline that has him at the top of the wicket-taker’s chart for the series was absent as he flitted between short and wide, and full and on the pads. It was this kind of inconsistency that helped New Zealand reach so close to 300 and West Indies would want to offset that with the bat tomorrow.

Kevin Pietersen has expressed a vague ambition to make a comeback for England – less than a month after saying he was relieved to be out of the dressing room and was at peace with his international retirement.Shunned by England, and his character assassinated in the process, he has now suggested – fleetingly at least – that he retains an appetite for the big stage that leaves him unable quite to accept that his England career is over.Pietersen tweeted that he retained England ambitions as he prepared for the MCC Bicentenary celebration fixture against a Rest of the World side at Lord’s on Saturday. One look at his shirt and cap, and the prospect of a sympathetic hand from a big crowd, was enough to get the juices flowing. He has been well received south of the river when he has turned out for Surrey in front of a relatively young crowd in the NatWest Blast. It has yet to be seen what the more traditional upholders of the cricketing faith at Lord’s will make of him.”My space reserved in the Lord’s dressing room,” he tweeted. “Clothes ready! So excited about tomorrow. I didn’t think I’d have this opportunity to play in front of a full house at Lord’s again. I still do hope that things change and I play for England here again. Time will tell…….”Pietersen later expanded on his mood. He cannot look upon Lord’s, where he made five England hundreds and easily imagine that he will not receive the adulation again. “I never give up,” he said. “I’m only 34, I’m still young so hopefully one day I can play here in front of full houses but I just want to enjoy Saturday. I’ve got the hunger for it and the body’s good so I want to go out there and do well.”Sachin Tendulkar captains the MCC side against a World XI led by Shane Warne.Pietersen was soon surrounded by a gaggle of England cricket journalists, some of whom have been less than complimentary since he was ruled persona non grata after the Ashes tour by the new MD of England cricket, Paul Downton.Just like the old days.

Series will be difficult without Shakib – Mushfiqur

Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, has said that while the side will miss suspended allrounder Shakib Al Hasan, the series in the West Indies will offer young players a chance to show their skills

Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, has said that while the side will miss suspended allrounder Shakib Al Hasan on the West Indies tour, the ODI series will offer young players a chance to show their skills before the 2015 World Cup.Shakib was given a six-month suspension by the Bangladesh Cricket Board in July on grounds of “serious misbehavior” with the side’s new coach, Chandika Hathurusingha, and for his altercation with a spectator during a recent ODI against India. The allrounder had played a stellar role during Bangladesh’s last full tour of West Indies five years ago, after taking over as captain from the injured Mashrafe Mortaza. On that tour, Shakib led Bangladesh to an overseas Test series win, followed by a victory in the ODIs, and he also did well in the 2007 World Cup and 2010 World T20 in the Caribbean.”He has been our best player in the last eight to ten years,” Mushfiqur said. “Of course we will miss him. The series will be a difficult one without Shakib. But in our last series, against India, some new young players have stepped up. This is yet another opportunity to have a closer look at them before the World Cup.”Bangladesh’s only away wins against Test-playing countries have come on tours of Zimbabwe and West Indies. Mushfiqur said the team had discussed its lack of success away from home and conceded the team isn’t “strong on paper”. However, he said the challenge was in motivating his troops.”We have done well in ODIs back home but we have had problems with consistency overseas. We have addressed it, and we look forward to it.”It is going to be a big challenge for us but the boys are up for it, they are hungry and ready to do well. We are not a strong team on paper, but if we do well in the field and execute the plans, then hopefully it will be a great series for us.Bangladesh started the tour on the right foot, with a convincing win over Grenada in the warm-up game. They will also bank on the experience of players like Imrul Kayes and Sohag Gazi, who had toured the West Indies in May this year with the Bangladesh A squad.”We will try to take advantage of our Bangladesh A players in the side. At the same time, the practice game was great for us. Our batters and bowlers did well. The outfield wasn’t great but the players are in good shape,” he said.Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies captain, said he was happy to have the new fast-bowling combination of Ravi Rampaul and Kemar Roach in the side. Roach, who made a comeback to international cricket in the series against New Zealand, had battled injuries for almost a year and had also undergone shoulder surgery. Bravo also hoped Jason Holder would have an impact for West Indies in this series.”Roach has been out due to injury. Ravi has been our best bowler throughout the time he has been playing. There’s also Jerome Taylor, who is back into cricket, and you can’t forget Jason Holder who has done good things since he has come into international cricket,” Bravo said. “I’m happy all those players are fit and available for selection. It makes the competition within the team tougher but at the same time, it’s good to be able to put our best XI. We have good quality fast bowlers, good spinners, players who can bat deep as well.”
