Roy and Dernbach start for Surrey

Jason Roy guided Surrey to a four-wicket win over Hampshire in a low-scoring Clydesdale Bank 40 Group B match at the Rose Bowl

02-May-2011
ScorecardJason Roy guided Surrey to a four-wicket win over Hampshire in a low-scoring Clydesdale Bank 40 Group B match at the Rose Bowl. The 20-year-old hit a match top score of 76 to help ease Surrey home with more than six overs to spare.Chasing Hampshire’s meagre 141 all out, made in 30 overs, Surrey were in trouble at 45 for 5, still needing another 97 for victory. But Roy teamed up with Matthew Spriegel in a match-winning stand of 95 for the sixth wicket as Hampshire ran out of ideas. Roy hit four fours and a six and faced 108 balls, but it was his ability to dig in during a crisis which proved vital to the Surrey cause.Hampshire chose to bat first and were in trouble from the start, losing both openers, James Adams and James Vince, with only 16 on the board in the third over. There was only one partnership of note, 41 for the fourth wicket between top scorer Liam Dawson and experienced South African Neil McKenzie.Jade Dernbach did most of the damage, removing the dangerous Adams in his first over and then returning to demolish the tail, sending back Benny Howell, Dominic Cork and last man Danny Briggs. Yasir Arafat and Tim Linley each took two wickets and Dawson was the only batsman who made any impression, hitting 34 with only two boundaries. But, if Surrey thought their target was a simple one, they were wrong because both openers, Rory Hamilton-Brown and Steven Davies, were out by the third over and Zander de Bruyn and Tom Maynard soon followed.Gary Wilson was out first ball as spinner Briggs made an instant impression, with two wickets in his first over. At 45 for 5, Hampshire must have fancied their chances of a second win of the season. But, then, Roy and Spriegel began the task of repairing the damage, taking few chances but taking Surrey within sight of their target. Chris Wood prevented Roy finishing off the job by bowling him at the start of the 33rd over, but Chris Schofield got the two runs required from the only ball he faced.Spriegel was 29 not out from 48 balls when the winning runs were scored and Briggs was the most economical of the Hampshire bowlers, taking 2 for 27 from his eight-over allotment.

The IPL arrives in Indore

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL match between Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Kings XI Punjab in Indore

Big PictureWe are into that part of the season where calculators are whipped out, heads are scratched, spread-sheets are filled and scenarios are chalked out. The good news for Kochi Tuskers Kerala is that they can still make the play-offs. The good news for Kings XI Punjab is that if they beat Kochi on Friday, they will be on par with them on the points table. The bad news for both is that another slip-up could end their faltering campaigns. It’s all to play for as the IPL heads to its newest destination, the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. It will be a ‘home’ game for Kochi, which is tough to justify given that Indore, located in central India, is around 800km closer to Mohali than it is to Kochi. Not that Kochi will mind the migration, given that they have won more games away than at home this season. Mahela Jayawardene will hope for a pitch with pace and carry on it – his seam-heavy attack thrives in zippy conditions, while his batsmen have been bowled out three times on sluggish tracks.Interestingly, Kochi and Punjab are the only sides that have managed to defeat both Chennai and Mumbai – finalists of IPL 2010, and two of the form teams so far this year. Whichever side derives more self-belief and momentum from those performances will run out winners on Friday.Form guide (most recent first)Punjab: WLLLL (ninth in points table)
Kochi: LWWLL (sixth in points table)Team talkIn five games, David Hussey’s contribution to Punjab’s cause has been 20 runs and one wicket. David Miller and Ryan McLaren will feel hard done if they continue to warm the bench while Hussey plays.Ramesh Powar has leaked 9.33 runs per over for his two wickets. Sreesanth has every right to be indignant if Powar keeps him out again.Predict the playing XIs for this match. Play ESPNcricinfo Team Selector. In the spotlightIn the first week of IPL 2011, Paul Valthaty was clubbing everything off the front foot, while also producing wickets with his split-finger slower balls. Since then, he has been circumspect at the top of the order, and shown a reluctance to swing through the leg side. How he goes in the last four games will decide whether he is a one-week wonder or a genuine talent.Parthiv Patel’s baby face undermines his determination, and his stature offers few clues of his impeccable sense of timing. He specialises in cuts and chops when offered width, and can unleash a fierce little slog-sweep. Parthiv’s pluck at one-drop, sandwiched between Brendon McCullum’s brutality at the top, and Mahela Jayawardene’s finesse at No. 4, could prove crucial to Kochi’s fortunes.Prime numbers He may have a reputation for waywardness, but Sreesanth (6.14 runs per over) has easily been Kochi’s most economical bowler this season Lasith Malinga (59 wickets) has ended RP Singh’s (58) perch at the top of the IPL wicket-takers list. RP will want to wrest back the honour during his spell against PunjabThe chatter”I am not making an excuse but in our last few games we have played on some mediocre wickets and then you have to scrap for runs. It is a challenge and we need to adapt to that. On good tracks we have done well against strong teams be it Delhi or Kolkata.”

Sizzling Gilchrist conquers Bangalore

Adam Gilchrist rolled back the years to produce a delightfully aggressive century and Shaun Marsh unfurled a gem of his own to charge Kings XI Punjab to a thumping victory

Adrenalin. Violence. And a lot of skill. The Dharamsala sky cracked with lightning and thunder but the real storm was witnessed from the bats of Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh. Gilchrist rolled back the years to produce a delightfully aggressive century and Marsh unfurled a gem of his own as the pair constructed the highest partnership in a Twenty20 game, 206 runs, to help Kings XI Punjab terminate Royal Challengers Bangalore’s winning streak. With this massive 111-run victory, Punjab are level on points with Kolkata Knight Riders and also, racked up their net run rate. There are many big-hitting batsmen but most of them tend to club, bludgeon, tonk, heave and thump. Gilchrist, though, rarely plays an “ugly” shot. He makes eye-pleasing classical arcs with the bat and tonight was no different. Marsh captured the mood best: “It was a privilege to watch it from the other end,” Marsh said.Gilchrist made his presence felt in the chase too, diving to his left to take a stunner to dismiss Chris Gayle and derail the chase. Ryan Harris removed both Gayle and Virat Kohli, Praveen Kumar bowled his fifth maiden of the tournament, and Piyush Chawla bamboozled the lower-middle order with his googlies and legbreaks to grab four wickets but the night will be, as it should be, remembered for the carnage unleashed by Gilchrist the batsman. He didn’t start flowing until the seventh over, preferring to let Paul Valthaty play the role of aggressor. Gilchrist was on 2 off 9 deliveries, and Punjab on 30 for 1, when a short ball from Abhimanyu Mithun helped him kickstart his flashback. He swivelled to pull the white ball over the midwicket boundary to signal the beginning of the carnage. He then turned his attention to S Aravind, who had given only a solitary run from seven deliveries. He charged down the track to lift one over long-off and crashed another to the straight boundary. With Marsh collecting a six and a four, S Aravind leaked 21 runs in that eight over. The floodgates were well and truly open.Kohli tried to the check the Gilchrist flood with the spin of Gayle. No luck, though, as he was swung for two huge sixes. It was in the 10th over, bowled by Charl Langeveldt, that Gilchrist really stepped up the violence in some style. He played the conventional and the short-arm pull to collect two sixes before he produced the longest six (122 metres) to complete the hat-trick. It was a knuckle-ball from Langeveldt but Gilchrist read it early and swung it way beyond the midwicket boundary. Langeveldt winced, Kohli stared into distance and the Punjab camp was agog with utter delight.Bangalore’s woes, though, were only to escalate from that moment as Marsh decided to weigh in with his own brand of aggression. He stamped his presence on the game in the 15th over, looting 30 runs off Johan van der Wath. It went for 6 6 4 4 4 6, as Marsh launched a stunning assault. Three fours sped to the extra-cover boundary, one six flew over midwicket, another sailed over long-off and the final six disappeared over the straight boundary.By the end it was difficult to keep count of the sixes as the scorecard kept racing ahead as though it was on steroids. It was a violent violent night in the hill-town inhabited by peaceful monks.

Guto Ferreira: 'Foi a melhor atuação do Bahia no ano'

E a equipe sente. Fez aquilo que a gente conversou. Na minha concepção, foi a melhor partida do ano”.

“O grupo mostrou para ele próprio que é capaz. Falei na coletiva ontem que a equipe tinha feito 50 gols no ano passado, e 25 foram marcados por jogadores que estão aqui. Zé estava aqui, voltou a marcar, Edigar estava aqui e voltou a marcar. Vinicius estava aqui e voltou a marcar. Show. É isso que precisamos. A busca é sempre essa: fazer e não tomar”, contou.

Sangakkara hundred earns Sri Lanka draw

It was Sri Lanka who finished on a high after an impressive rearguard led by stand-in captain Kumar Sangakkara secured a draw at the Rose Bowl

England’s fifth consecutive series victory was never in doubt since the third day of this match, but it was Sri Lanka who finished on a high after an impressive rearguard led by stand-in captain Kumar Sangakkara secured a draw at the Rose Bowl. Sangakkara filled in one of the few blank spots on his fabulous career record, with his first hundred in England, as the visitors showed impressive resilience with Thilan Samaraweera unbeaten on 87 when the weather closed in for one final time at tea.In what could be Sangakkara’s last Test innings in the country he took the opportunity to partially atone for a disappointing record which had included a previous best of 66. His first-innings waft against James Anderson suggested a player who wasn’t entirely focussed on his role, but with a match to save he batted with a steely determination not seen before in the series. His 25th Test hundred from 217 balls came with a push into the leg side and while there was no huge celebration he gave a contented salute around the ground. He had moments of luck during the innings, but on a lively surface that encouraged the quicks throughout a batsman needed a few things to go his way. By and large, though, he combated everything England threw at him with the style befitted a batsman holding a Test average of 56.A sure sign that his game was coming back together was in the cover driving – both off pace and later spin – although one of his doses of fortune came on 89 when, having not added a run in eight overs after lunch, he edged a rearing delivery from Anderson over first slip. His innings eventually ended when he drove Anderson to point ten minutes before tea, but with clouds building he had done enough. The unexpected part of Sri Lanka’s resistance came from Rangana Herath, the nightwatchman, as he helped add 75 for the fourth wicket which frustrated England’s attempts for early breakthroughts. However, the home side did have chances and weren’t at their best in the field. Anderson lured Herath into a drive when he had 5 but Andrew Strauss was distracted from the catch as Graeme Swann moved across into his eye line. Anderson then missed the opportunity to run out Herath with a throw from cover with the batsman well short of the crease. He would also have been given lbw on 19 had England opted to use the DRS when Swann hit him pad first. Yet, despite those chances it was an impressive innings from Herath who showed determination against the quick bowlers during the first hour then began to expand his strokeplay when Strauss was forced to rotate his options. The introduction of Jonathan Trott, whose first two overs cost 23, brought Herath to life as he swung him through midwicket off one knee and pulled him through square leg for another to hurry Sri Lanka towards parity. But Herath’s attacking intent eventually ended his innings when he missed a sweep at Swann.Samaraweera provided Sangakkara with excellent support as the deficit was erased before lunch and the time-runs equation started to favour Sri Lanka. They scored at such a rate – 222 runs came in two sessions – that the advantage grew steadily and England soon started to lose their drive to push for victory. They weren’t help when Stuart Broad (heel) and Chris Tremlett (leg) picked up niggles during their spells which left Strauss short of options.Samaraweera took his chance although was given a working over against the short ball by Tremlett and Anderson. A couple of edges flew wide or over the slips as the pacemen made an effort to break through, but he was quick to pick off the loose deliveries especially through the leg side. He also twice used his feet to loft Swann over the top during his second half century of the series, but was denied the chance to reach three figures when the forecast rain arrived.A series win should never be belittled, but England will have hoped for a more convincing margin than victory based on one crazy session in Cardiff. Their next Test challenge will is the eagerly anticipated visited of India, although before then they face Sri Lanka in one-day cricket. It’s a format that suits the visitors much better and they could be considered favourites.
