West Ham: Moyes plotting move for Johnstone

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Sam Johnstone to the London Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by West Ham insider Claret & Hugh, who claimed in a recent post that, following Alphonse Areola’s display in the 2-1 (AET) FA Cup victory over Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday, David Moyes appears unlikely to make the 28-year-old’s loan deal from Paris Saint-Germain a permanent move this summer.

Instead, it is reported that the 58-year-old could look to tie up an early deal for West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who looks set to become available on a free transfer upon the expiry of his current contract at The Hawthorns at the end of the season.

Finally, Claret & Hugh suggest that Moyes is a big fan of the 28-year-old, while the England international’s agent, Will Salthouse, is an intermediary known extremely well to David Sullivan – as he also represents Michail Antonio, Aaron Cresswell, Ryan Fredericks and Darren Randolph.

Frightening duo

While it is undeniable that the soon-to-be 37-year-old Lukasz Fabianski is well into the twilight years of his professional footballing career, the former Poland international has demonstrated this season that, in the short-term, he still has much to offer for West Ham.

Indeed, over his 22 Premier League appearances in the current campaign, the £900k-rated shot-stopper has been in extremely fine form for the Hammers, keeping five clean sheets and making an average of 3.2 saves per game – the joint eighth-most in the top flight.

These returns have seen the £60k-per-week ‘keeper – with whom the Irons are reported to be in contract extension talks – average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.87, ranking him as the club’s 13th-best performer in the league.

Regarding Johnstone, the £7.2m-rated goalkeeper undoubtedly proved over his 37 Premier League outings for West Brom last season that he is good enough for the very highest level of the English game, keeping six clean sheets and making an average of 4.5 saves per match – the most of any ‘keeper in the league last time out.

These metrics saw the £32.5k-per-week England international earn a quite remarkable seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.03, ranking him as Albion’s second-best player in the division – a rather extraordinary feat considering the Baggies’ relegation from the top flight.

As such, should West Ham go on to secure the bargain signing of the ‘keeper who Steve Bruce dubbed a “diamond” this summer, in addition to tying Fabianski down to a new contract at the London Stadium, Moyes will have formed a frightening duo between the sticks for the Irons – both of whom would appear more than capable of being the club’s number one next term.

Rangers team news vs Annan: Helander in

Glasgow Rangers have now been gifted a huge boost before they face Annan Athletic away from home in the Scottish Cup.

The Lowdown: Team news

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Giovanni van Bronckhorst confirmed that Aaron Ramsey is now ‘fit to start’, meaning that the Ibrox faithful could see him from the first whistle for the first time since he signed on loan from Juventus on Transfer Deadline Day.

The Dutchman also gave positive updates on the fitness of both Leon Balogun and Ryan Jack, and revealed that a forgotten man ‘will be involved’ against Annan.

The Latest: Helander back

Indeed, van Bronckhorst also confirmed that Filip Helander, who has not played for the Teddy Bears since will be involved’ in the cup clash:

“Filip (Helander) has been training for a few weeks and will be involved tomorrow.

“I am really happy for him after a spell out.”

The Verdict: Huge boost

What a huge boost it is for the Light Blues to have Helander back in the squad.

Van Bronckhorst will surely be excited to work with the Sweden international, who was ranking highly among his teammates in terms of average tackles, clearances and blocks per game in the Scottish Premiership earlier this season (WhoScored), and of course scored the winning goal against Celtic at home to help the Gers keep up the pace in the title race against their city rivals.

Nonetheless, Helander will be hoping that he can now put his injury problem behind him, and use some minutes against Annan as a springboard to finish the campaign with the Gers strongly.

Ian Bell eager to show his aggressive side

Ian Bell, who has been recalled to the one-day squad, knew he had to expand his game otherwise he would be left behind

One of the key improvements in England’s recent rise as a one-day side has been their ability to hit sixes and it is clear that power is now a pre-requisite to get into the team. This has led to a number of batsmen reinventing themselves and Ian Bell, who has been recalled to the one-day squad, knew he had to follow suit or get left behind.Bell last played an ODI in November 2008 and his one-dimensional style of batting, perfectly suited to Test cricket, meant he was struggling to find a place in the increasingly forceful limited-overs game. His priority became saving a Test career that looked like falling by the wayside in South Africa last winter, but following a successful tour he was given hope of a future in one-day cricket when he toured UAE with the Lions and now he is back in the limited-overs set up.”I’ve certainly tried to be stronger in terms of hitting over the top but I think it’s about recognising situations when I need to do that and also when to knock it around,” he said. “Going on the Lions trip to Dubai I found a method to my game that worked quite nicely in Twenty20 with a lot of advice from Graham Thorpe.”It’s just a matter of moving that to England. If you are going to bat at the top in the modern game you have to be able to have a mixed game in terms of hitting over the top and being assertive at certain times in the game. I’ve tried to do that with Warwickshire and hopefully I can carry it forward.”His one-day county form certainly suggests that the changes Bell has made are working. He has been making runs at an eye-catching strike-rate of 145.13 in the Friends Provident t20, alongside scoring at better than a run-a-ball in the Clydesdale Bank 40 while maintaining an average over 50 in both. He was under instructions to become more commanding at the crease and take charge of situations, rather than playing in his own bubble.”It’s something Andy [Flower] has spoken to me about,” he said. “It’s something he wants to see more of, he’s seen glimpses of it but more consistently. A few things were asked of me in one-day cricket which I needed to go away and work on with Gilo [Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of cricket] and hopefully the way I have played for Warwickshire is the way England have wanted me to play.”Modern one-day cricket has moved on from guys who play normal shots. You can’t be one dimensional. No one has told me to change as a person but one-day cricket has moved on from what it was 10 or even five years ago. Playing on the subcontinent, and anywhere around the world, you have to have different strengths to your game.”It’s not going to be every game you are going to be required to play like that but I’ve got to show I don’t just have the touch game but the other side as well. It’s trying to get two parts of my game working together.”Bell will hope for a chance to show off his new expansive repertoire in the next two weeks, beginning with the one-off match against Scotland and followed by five against Australia. Plenty can change between now and the start of the Ashes on November 25, but that doesn’t dampen the enthusiasm for some early sparring.”It’s a great time to see where both teams are,” said Bell. “The World Twenty20 final was a great momentum booster for us and I’m sure the Australians will be desperate to do well in the series. It’s a good chance for us to go out and show we are improving.”

Com novo tipo de contrato, Crefisa ajuda Palmeiras a bancar Lucas Lima

MatériaMais Notícias

A Crefisa vai ajudar o Palmeiras a bancar Lucas Lima.

Rangers endured nightmare with Josh Windass

Rangers managed to navigate the January transfer window without losing any of their key first-team players, with the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent remaining at Ibrox.

They did cash in on Nathan Patterson as Premier League side Everton handed them a club-record fee for the youngster, but he was the second-choice at right-back to James Tavernier.

However, they have previously let go of key players and one star they allowed to leave – on deadline day – in 2018 was forward Josh Windass and Rangers endured a big howler over his exit.

Sporting director – at the time – Mark Allen decided to accept a £2.5m bid from Wigan after he produced 18 goals and eight assists in the 2017/18 campaign.

Speaking about his exit later that year, the forward said: “I continued playing out wide, played in the European games, got to deadline day and I got a text saying Wigan have had a bid accepted from Rangers of £2.5m and I’m like, ‘accepted, £2.5m?.

“So I messaged the gaffer because I couldn’t find him at the ground and said to him ‘is this true?’ and he just said meet me in the changing room.

“So I went to meet him and had a chat and he’s said ‘you have a decision to make’ and I always wanted to go play in England but in my head I was thinking, ‘I got 26 goals and assists in a team that wasn’t great for Rangers and they’re accepting £2.5m?’

“I’m thinking ‘well if I’m going to play out wide then I’m off’ because if you think you can accept that for a player who has contributed that much in terms of goals and in terms of assists – maybe not always in terms of performances but in terms of numbers then see ye in a bit.”

Allen had a nightmare with this deal for several reasons, with the first being the way the situation was handled – according to Windass – as he accepted an offer that the player believed was less than his actual worth. This suggests that the Gers undersold him and missed out on a bigger payday.

The former Ibrox chief also had a howler as the forward has since kicked on as a player. Transfermarkt valued him at £585k at the time of the move and at the time of writing (14/02/22) he is valued at £1.80m after spells at Wigan and now Sheffield Wednesday.  This is a 202% increase since his exit from Rangers and he could still improve further as he is in the peak years of his career at the age of 28.

Last season in the English Championship, Windass scored an impressive nine goals and provided six assists despite Wednesday’s relegation to League One – where he has scored four goals in seven matches. This shows that he still has the quality to score and create goals on a regular basis, following on from his form with the Gers.

Therefore, Allen allowing him to leave in 2018 was a nightmare for Rangers as they missed out on both a potentially bigger payday further down the line due to his development and having a better player in their ranks as his increasing value suggests that he has improved as a player.

He could have been a major player under Steven Gerrard and now Gio van Bronckhorst but, instead, Gers fans will now be wondering what could have been…

Leicestershire crash to seventh home defeat

Leicestershire crashed to their seventh home defeat after losing by eight runs to Warwickshire in the final Friends Provident t20 North Group match at Grace Road

Cricinfo staff18-Jul-2010
Scorecard
Leicestershire crashed to their seventh home defeat after losing by eight runs to Warwickshire in the final Friends Provident t20 North Group match at Grace Road. Having restricted the Bears to 137 for 7 with a fine bowling and fielding performance, the Foxes were unable to match that with their batting, failing to chase down what looked a comfortable victory target and closing on 129 for 6.Former Foxes player Darren Maddy top scored for the Bears with a blistering 41 off 29 balls, hitting three sixes, while Chris Woakes and Keith Barker each claimed two wickets to help clinch victory. On a slow pitch, the home side were never up with the rate needed after the early loss of opener Jacques Du Toit, who was trapped lbw by Woakes. Brad Hodge tried in vain to keep the chase afloat, cracking four boundaries in a belligerent 22 before becoming Woakes’ second victim with the total on 31.The innings then crawled along with no boundary for 10 overs. That finally arrived when James Taylor produced a reverse sweep for a four off the bowling of Stef Piolet. Taylor went on to top score with 29, but by then it was all too little too late for the Foxes, with the asking rate having climbed to more than 11 an over.Barker ended their slim hopes of reaching the target by taking two wickets in an over, dismissing first Taylor and then clean bowling Wayne White. Despite Claude Henderson hitting Barker for the only six of the innings, the Foxes were still left needing 17 off the last over, and Neil Carter bowled well enough to ensure that did not happen. In the field the Foxes fared much better, with Hodge taking the early wicket of England batsman Jonathan Trott who was trapped lbw, and the big-hitting Carter bowled by Matthew Hoggard for 21.But Barker, Jim Troughton and then Maddy kept the scoreboard moving, with the latter in impressive form. After a slow start, he found his timing despite the slowness of the surface, smashing superb sixes off Henderson, James Benning and Nadeem Malik.A brisk innings from Woakes took the Bears to 137 and although the total hardly seemed enough, it proved more than adequate as the Foxes once again disappointed in front of their home fans. The only point gained they gained at home in the competition was because of a no-result for a washed-out game against Durham. Away from home the Foxes won six out of eight. As it turned out, even had they won for the first time at Grace Road, it would not have been enough, with Northamptonshire clinching a quarter-final place with a victory at Durham.
