Wolves transfer news on Palhinha

Many Wolves fans have been left buzzing over some transfer news that has emerged on Joao Palhinha.

As per Record (via Sport Witness), the midfield player now has ‘one foot out’ of Sporting Lisbon with less than a week of the January transfer window to go, and the Midlands club have been named as one of his next potential destinations.

Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla are also interested in his signature, and ‘many approaches’ from agents have been made in the past few days.

Sporting are also asking for a reduced price from what they wanted in the summer, now €30m (£25m), and it is Palhinha’s ‘dream’ to play in the Premier League, suggesting that the Molineux faithful have a good chance of signing him.

The Portugal international would give Bruno Lage a headache in terms of midfield selection, as he is currently averaging more tackles, shots and dribbles per game in Liga NOS than Leander Dendoncker, Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves are in the Premier League, and he has also contributed with three goals (WhoScored).

Ainda é prematuro, no entanto.

Behind-scenes Conte claim emerges at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur fans will love the latest claim surrounding Antonio Conte…

What’s the word?

It was a ruthless January transfer window for the north London outfit as it was very much more about the outgoings than the incomings but either way, it truly signalled the start of the Italian’s era at the club.

Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur were his only signings in a whirlwind deadline day, both signing from sporting director Fabio Paratici’s former club, Juventus.

Meanwhile, the bulk of the deadwood was shifted on – largely on loan – as club-record flop Tanguy Ndombele returned to Lyon, whilst Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil were shipped back to Spain, with Dele Alli being the only permanent exit as he joined top-flight rivals, Everton.

There were fears emerging throughout the window that Conte could walk if he wasn’t sufficiently backed by the board and on the face of it, only two signings would leave that situation somewhat in the lurch.

However, new claims behind the scenes suggest that he’s very pleased with the business Spurs have conducted – as revealed by the ever-reliable Alasdair Gold of football.london, who wrote:

‘While all managers will always want more in a transfer window, and Conte is no different, those around the Italian have told football.london that he is content with the early changes made at his behest in his first transfer window.’

Very encouraging

Conte may be left with a smaller squad but he’s got two solid additions in Kulusevski and Bentancur, and is likely to be left with a more harmonious dressing room, one full of players who are fully behind his relentless ethic on the training pitch.

There is an acceptance that the summer will be the window to truly transform things right across the club and you’re inclined to agree. Truth be told, it’ll take many more windows to elevate Spurs back into the Champions League equation.

It is a good start as the bulk of the players that saw the exit door on deadline day were rarely featuring under the Italian anyway.

Supporters can now rest at ease about their world-class coach as he truly appears to be in it for the long haul and considering he’s already worked his magic – losing just one league game since his arrival in November – then Gold’s update will be music to the ears of many.

Such fears can now be forgotten with Spurs just two points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United, whom they hold two games in hand over, too.

Conte’s refreshed squad returns to action on Saturday evening, where they face Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup fourth round, their final chance of securing instant silverware under the former Chelsea boss.

CA confirms split-innings one-dayers

One-day cricket in its familiar form could soon become a thing of the past after the Cricket Australia board gave the green light to a trial of split-innings state games next summer

One-day cricket in its familiar form could soon become a thing of the past after the Cricket Australia board gave the green light to a trial of split-innings state games next summer. If the new format is successful, Cricket Australia will take the idea to the ICC as a plan to keep ODIs alive, meaning the 2015 World Cup could feature a split-innings format.Although there has been no decision on how many overs each innings would be – four innings of either 20 or 25 overs are the most likely – CA will finalise their concept in the coming weeks. The first four rounds of the FR Cup will be played under the existing rules before the new format is introduced for the remaining six rounds, which will start in February.By then, Australia’s World Cup squad will have departed, so their preparations will not be affected. James Sutherland, the CA chief executive, said the innovation was intended as a way to retain all three formats of the game, with the middle portion of 50-over innings having become largely predictable.”It provides a mechanism by which in the eyes of the consumer we can distinguish the one-day game a little bit more from the Twenty20 format of the game,” Sutherland said. “There’s no doubt that there’s some feedback there that suggests that parts of the one-day game are a little bit predictable. That’s certainly something that we are looking to address.”One of the things that’s come back as the feedback from fans and also from a television audience perspective is that by having a split innings, after the dinner break, no matter, you will get to see both teams bat in the evening. That is something that people who might be going to the game after work or coming home after work see as being a very significant plus for this format.”The popularity of Twenty20 cricket has left ODIs in a difficult position, somewhere between the dynamic shortest format and the traditional Test matches. England and South Africa have already reduced their one-day domestic competitions to 40 overs a side, in an effort to eliminate some of the less exciting middle overs. The ICC has been searching for ways to keep 50-over cricket relevant, and next year’s World Cup on the subcontinent could feasibly be the last one played in the existing format. Sutherland said it was hard to predict how one-day cricket would look by the time of the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.”If you’re suggesting that the current playing conditions that one-day international cricket is being played under today is going to be the same in 2015, then I would suggest that it’s probably not the case,” Sutherland said. “There’s a question there about how radically the playing conditions may have developed or changed. I honestly don’t know the answer to that but what we at Cricket Australia are looking to do is to find a landing spot with a new format.”We have also been encouraged to innovate through the ICC cricket committee, who met not long ago. They were very, very encouraging of full members looking to explore innovations within the playing conditions and certainly that’s been raised at chief executive committee level in recent times.”Cricket Australia will now move to finalise the details, although it seems certain that teams will resume their second innings from the point where their first innings concluded. Sutherland said feedback from fans had played a major role in the split-innings concept, which has also been trialled this year in England’s county 2nd XI competition.
