What’s the word?

Their attempts to sign Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo from Juventus have seemingly hit a stumbling block, according to reliable transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

“There’s still nothing agreed for Arthur Melo deal. Next week will be key – Arsenal have decided to push again with Juventus, loan move not approved yet by Allegri,” he revealed on Twitter.

“Juve board have not opened talks with Chelsea for Loftus Cheek as potential Arthur replacement, as of now.”

Gutting blow

This is a worrying sign heading into the final two weeks of the window.

The Gunners have just seen their north London derby clash with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League postponed due to a lack of available first-team players, with issues ranging from suspected virus cases to injuries, whilst some players are at the Africa Cup of Nations.

It means Mikel Arteta is hugely light on options, particularly in central midfield, where Granit Xhaka is suspended, both Mo Elneny and Thomas Partey are away with their nations for the AFCON, and Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard are injured.

That’s why the north Londoners desperately need to bring in Arthur as quickly as possible, so to not yet have a loan move approved is certainly going to leave Arteta worried, if not absolutely fuming.

It is also concerning that the Serie A giants are doing very little themselves as they are yet to advance their interest in Loftus-Cheek as a direct replacement and the slower they move, the more it’ll impact a desperate Arsenal.

The Gunners host Burnley at the Emirates next weekend, so there is now time to complete a deal before it’s too late.

For the time being, Arteta must be livid with what’s happening off the pitch.

Many Liverpool fans have been criticising the performance of Diogo Jota despite their 3-0 win at home to Brentford in the Premier League this afternoon.

It was a comfortable game in the end for Jurgen Klopp’s team at Anfield, with goals from Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Takumi Minamino more than enough to give them the three points.

However, while there were some great performances in a Reds shirt, Jota may not have been pleased with his own display, as he squandered a couple of very good opportunities to score.

The former Wolves ace failed to find the back of the net with any of his six shots, while he also lost out on nine of his duels and failed to record a single successful dribble, key pass, accurate cross or long ball (SofaScore).

The 25-year-old also gave the ball away 13 times, the joint-fifth most out of his teammates, in what was a below-par performance by his standards. He is now without a goal in four matches, having scored in each of his last three before Christmas, as per Transfermarkt.

They are owned by the richest Indian in the world. They are led by the best cricketer of this generation. They have one of the best fast bowlers in their ranks. But Mumbai Indians, despite their high profile, failed to reach the knockout phase in the IPL’s two editions thus far.An array of reasons can be cited behind for their struggle: In the first season, Mumbai did well to hold together after the Harbhajan Singh slapping incident. But what hurt them the most was the absence of Sachin Tendulkar from the first half of the tournament due to injury. There was also plenty of chopping and changing of the line-ups, and the inexperience of the domestic players was apparent on more than one occasion despite Tendulkar and Shaun Pollock’s best efforts to inspire the team through their leadership.In 2009, Zaheer Khan was bought from Royal Challengers Bangalore, adding strength to the bowling department. Zaheer also filled the spot vacated by Pollock, who took up the role of mentor. Jonty Rhodes added vitality to the training sessions with his agility and reflexes. JP Duminy was signed up for a whopping US$950,000 after his heroics in Australia, but, on home soil, was unable to finish off games or give that final thrust to innings when left on his own. It did not help that Zaheer injured himself in the field midway through the tournament, and Sanath Jayasuriya failed to provide the usual fireworks in the beginning. Mumbai ended on the second rung from the bottom.But things look more positive the third time around. Tendulkar is in tremendous form with the bat and even if he is yet not a formidable batsman in Twenty20 cricket, the defining innings doesn’t seem far. Mumbai’s middle order is bolstered by the presence of the Trinidad pair of Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard, both supremely athletic allrounders having the ability to win games on their own. Zaheer is currently among the most consistent fast bowlers and if he is well backed-up by Lasith Malinga, with Jayasuriya firing at the top with Tendulkar, Mumbai can bounce back.The buzz

– Conversei com o Alexandre e com o Cícero (Souza, gerente de futebol) na segunda-feira. Foi uma conversa boa para que eu continuasse. E ontem houve uma outra conversa, fechando o meu ciclo no Palmeiras, entendendo que era momento de sair, porque poderia ir para outra equipe – disse Valentim.

Antes mesmo de acertar com Roger Machado, o Palmeiras convidou Valentim para voltar à função de auxiliar em 2018. O clube esperava que a reunião de segunda-feira terminasse com uma definição sobre o assunto, mas o ex-jogador pediu mais tempo para pensar se preferia continuar ou iniciar de vez a vida como treinador. O receio de que ele pudesse deixar o clube em meio à temporada caso recebesse um convite de outra equipe pesou.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Paul Brown of The Daily Star has shared what he knows as West Ham United eye a move for Flamengo forward Gabriel Barbosa.

The Lowdown: West Ham enter talks…

As first reported by Sky Sports, West Ham have been in talks to sign the Brazil international and even tabled a loan bid with the option to make his move permanent for €30m (£25m).

Barbosa is believed to be keen on a move to England and the Premier League amid David Moyes’ search for a centre-forward alternative to Michail Antonio.

New recruitment chief Rob Newman and the east London club are still yet to bring in a signing for that position as the January transfer window enters its final week, with Brown now sharing an update on their bid to sign Barbosa.

The Latest: West Ham move ‘on the table’…

Speaking to GiveMeSport, citing ‘lots of little leaks’, he claims that a move for the 25-year-old is still ‘on the table’, believing it is due to the fact we don’t actually know what Barbosa wants himself.

“The only reason that one is still on the table is we don’t really know what the player himself wants,” Brown stated.

“There’s been lots of little leaks here and there that he really wants to come to the Premier League and that he really wants to come now and he likes West Ham and the way they play, and thinks he could be a really good fit there. But we haven’t really heard any of that from him.”

The Verdict: Time to step up bid?

Amid this uncertainty surrounding Barbosa’s future in South America and the reports indicating he wants a move to Europe, we believe West Ham need to either step up their pursuit or swiftly move on to other targets.

The January window has just over a week remaining and Moyes needs to address the centre-forward position as soon as possible, especially given Antonio’s history of injury problems and their real lack of natural alternatives.

Having scored 29 goals in all competitions throughout 2021, Barbosa is proven in front of goal and still at a fairly young age as he comes with the potential for sell-on value. Given his torrid spell at Inter Milan, though, you can understand why the Irons haven’t yet lodged an outright permanent bid and are more interested in a loan with the option to buy.

However, now is the time to make a final decision on whether to continue pushing for his arrival as we enter a crucial period of the transfer window.

Lara, who retired from international cricket after the 2007 World Cup, has not played competitively for two years.”We have been in discussion with Brian regarding his possible involvement with the club,” a Surrey spokesman told the BBC. “However we have no further comment to make at this stage.”Lara has already been in the nets at The Oval this week and has had talks with Surrey’s cricket manager Chris Adams and chief executive Paul Sheldon.The Indian press recently speculated Lara was planning a comeback there. A deal was said to be done with the Kochi franchise which joins the IPL next season, but nothing came of that.Retirement has not come easy to Lara, and he has hinted he could be lured back several times.
