David Hussey stars in thumping win

Australia’s big-name bowling attack shut down Scotland for a 189-run win after David Hussey provided the initial warmth with his first ODI century on a shivery day in Edinburgh

Australia’s big-name bowling attack shut down Scotland for a 189-run win after David Hussey provided the initial warmth with his first ODI century on a shivery day in Edinburgh. Hussey’s brisk 111 allowed the tourists to speed to 345, their 12th largest total, and the hosts did well to manage 156 before being dismissed in the 40th over. The sun came out for Scotland’s innings but the Australian fast bowlers took a while to shake off the cold and the captain Gavin Hamilton and Frazer Watts started by putting on 51 in 56 balls. Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Dirk Nannes and Shane Watson were all trialled for an early breakthrough, but the opening pair had few problems until Watts played on to Nannes, giving the left-arm fast man his first wicket on debut.Nannes, who played in the World Twenty20 in June for the Netherlands, was welcomed by Watts with boundaries from his first and sixth deliveries before forcing a straight six in his third over. The opening wicket slowed the hosts’ momentum and Lee and his team-mates chipped in regularly to seal the warm-up success for their limited-overs engagements against England.Lee struck with a slower ball, a full toss which hit the top of Ryan Watson’s stumps on 10, and the home side was 82 for 3 after Qasim Sheikh charged at Nathan Hauritz. His nick was missed by Tim Paine but picked up by the first slip Cameron White following a juggle.Hussey’s strong match continued when he was successful with his second ball, Hamilton being taken by a sharp Watson grab at midwicket for 38. It was a bad mistake for Hamilton, who was desperate to convert his strong start, and he left a disappointed leader.Once the captain went Australia were in control, but they weren’t dominating with the ball on a slowish pitch like they did with the bat. Richie Berrington (25) and Neil McCallum (24) stayed for a while before being overpowered and the tail went quickly. Lee, who knocked out Berrington’s off stump, captured two wickets and snatched a fine diving catch at cover to give Watson his second. Watson led the attack with 3 for 29 to ensure Hussey’s contribution ended in a healthy win.Hussey, who has been left out of the 50-over squads for this trip and the Champions Trophy, is currently seen as a Twenty20 specialist and appeared in this game while his brother Michael rested. He showed Australia what they were missing with a powerful display against modest and overawed opposition. After Australia were in minor discomfort at 143 for 4, Hussey exploded against the offspinner Majid Haq with four sixes in three overs, hitting straight down the ground with assistance from the stiff breeze. The blows were so strong that the only people in danger were the freeloaders watching through the trees outside the ground at the Nursery End.One ball was lost in the foliage and another hit the sightscreen, but Haq continued to flight his deliveries and was punished. Adam Voges joined in with a big clearance and Haq eventually finished with 0 for 75 off 10 overs.Hussey stepped out after the early losses of David Warner (0) and Michael Clarke (16) to join Watson, who was also in a hurry on his way to a 41-ball 68. On a day like this, when only the brave wore t-shirts for the first 50 overs, the batsmen were content to be in the middle – as long as they were doing something to keep warm.Watson, Hussey and Voges got the spectators’ hands out of their pockets to clap – and field – with bursts of impressive strokeplay against willing but out-classed bowlers. Hussey’s century came from 83 balls and there was a brief acknowledgement before he attempted more sixes. He landed another before finding McCallum at long off, launching one high into the wind off Berrington. The innings, which lasted 87 deliveries, would have been more timely if it had arrived in ODIs against South Africa, New Zealand or Pakistan over the past eight months. Hussey’s failure to make regular contributions in those series was the reason for his dropping and it’s unlikely a big score against a team like this will help him too much. What it has done is put him in form before the two Twenty20s against England starting in Manchester on Sunday.Voges did the same, blasting three sixes in his 72, and Watson continued his strong tour since being promoted to the Test team in Birmingham. Paine, the debutant wicketkeeper, joined the fun with a calm 29 not out in the frenetic finish that was dominated by Gordon Goudie, the opening bowler.Goudie ended the innings with four late breakthroughs to take 5 for 73 from 10 overs – only the second five-wicket haul by a Scotland player – and give the strong crowd someone local to cheer. He collected two wickets in the 48th over and removed Nathan Hauritz and Dirk Nannes to conclude Australia’s heavy scoring. Scotland kept in touch for a while in reply and hung in against the world’s No. 3 team.

Trescothick powers Somerset to final

Marcus Trescothick plundered 56 off 32 balls to Somerset booked their place in the Twenty20 Cup final

It was always a fanciful notion that Marcus Trescothick would come out of international retirement to help England at their hour of need – or even be asked to – but his brutal innings of 56 off 32 balls just reinforced why he has been centre of attention over the last week. It was a display of power, timing and skill as he plundered the Kent attack around Edgbaston to set Somerset on track for a place in the Twenty20 Cup final. As with Sussex earlier in the day, they are now assured of progression to the Champions League Twenty20 in October and there Trescothick faces another decision about travelling to the tournament. Touring was what he found impossible at the end of his international career, but before this semi-final he did talk of the excitement of the Indian event. “You’d have to ask him about that,” dead-batted Justin Langer when asked about Trescothick’s availability. As with his four-day and 50-over batting, Trescothick is world-class at Twenty20. He warmed up for this match with 80 off 61 balls in the Pro40 (a game that wasn’t far off a Twenty20 after some inept Gloucestershire batting) and continued in the same vein here.Belying a slow pitch that made hitting through the line difficult, he took 16 off the opening over of the innings from Amjad Khan with four consecutive meaty boundaries. He launched a six over deep midwicket, but saved his best to reach fifty from 27 balls as he drove inside-out over extra cover. He’d been missed moments earlier on 47 when Azhar Mahmood spilled a return chance, but the stuffing had already been knocked out of Somerset.Justin Langer contributed 17 in an opening stand worth 73 off 40 balls. He was out, getting a leading edge to cover off James Tredwell and the offspinner also removed Trescothick with an outside edge to backward point. However, such was the head start which Somerset had been given, that the remainder of the chase was a fairly simple process. The dominance of Trescothick was highlighted after his dismissal, as boundaries became harder to find, but that wasn’t a concern for Somerset. At any rate, Zander de Bruyn – the county’s leading Twenty20 run-scorer of the season ahead of Trescothick – and James Hildreth found the rope when they needed to and the game was over long before the finish.Kent had come into Finals Day billed as the most complete team on show, but Twenty20 again proved notoriously hard to predict. Joe Denly was bowled in the first over by Alfonso Thomas, who followed up by trapping Martin van Jaarsveld leg before with one that skidded on. That Thomas got his wickets by bowling straight should be no surprise – he was the hero in the quarter-final bowl-out against Lancashire. When Geraint Jones fell to Charl Willoughby, Kent were 31 for 3 with the fielding restrictions almost gone and precious time was used up rebuilding. Robert Key couldn’t find his timing – his struggle marked a contrast to Trescothick’s subsequent skill – and used up 38 balls for 34. He was bowled in odd fashion, when the ball grazed off stump and required a referral to the third umpire.Darren Stevens finally gave the innings some momentum during the final five overs, adding 52 off 30 balls with Justin Kemp, and passed 50 from 40 deliveries. Kent’s effort was rounded off in positive style as the final over, bowled by left-arm spinner Arul Suppiah, went for 20, and with a strong attack 145 suggested a decent game. Then came Trescothick.

Leeds face Spurs without Patrick Bamford

It is no secret that Leeds’ injury crisis this season has had a knock-on effect which reflects their position in the table right now.

With numerous key players missing at one point or another, Leeds have struggled to establish a run of form in the Premier League this season and are currently 17th in the table, with a relegation battle in sight if they don’t pick up points over the next few weeks.

One key injury which has hampered the goal threat for Marcelo Bielsa’s side is the one to Patrick Bamford. He was an integral member of the starting XI last season, scoring 17 goals and setting up his team-mates eight times, which even sparked shouts of an England call-up from many for Euro 2020 last summer.

It is clear that the striker’s injury is a big blow with numbers like those, but with no confirmation of a return date so far, it’s looking like Bielsa will need to find another way to cover the goals and assists needed to compete in the Premier League.

The Leeds manager spoke out ahead of the Spurs game about both Ayling and Bamford, saying: “They’re not available for the game on Sunday. The evolution is controlled on a daily basis and I would not want to give you a date that won’t be met. When my responses are brief it’s because I can’t offer certainty.”

The striker picked up his ankle injury in September and was hopeful to return after the October international break but that hasn’t been the case, and Bielsa confirmed that the 28-year-old’s ankle issue was “not a simple injury”.

Leeds will have to do without the striker until further notice, but have been handed a boost with Raphinha back in action and will be hoping that he can drive the team forward with some important attacking performances to keep the side out of the relegation zone before winter break.

It is unclear if the Whites will seek to add more attacking players at Elland Road during the winter transfer window, which could be dependent on further injuries or a better picture of whether Bamford will become available before then.

With only two other teams scoring fewer Premier League goals, the continued absence of last season’s top scorer will come as a gutting blow to Bielsa as he aims to lift Leeds away from trouble.

Man City fans praise Kyle Walker v PSG

Flocking to Twitter, a number of Manchester City fans lavished defender Kyle Walker with praise for his ‘imperious’ display at home to Paris-Saint Germain in their 2-1 Champions League home win on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola’s side fought to a memorable victory against the Ligue 1 giants and secured top spot in their group, also confirming a place in the round of 16.

Seeking to gain revenge for their 2-0 loss in the reverse fixture in Paris, City started off brightly and dominated possession in the opening stages, going on to miss big first half chances to take the lead.

Soon after the interval, the Sky Blues paid for their lack of ruthlessness as Kylian Mbappe slotted a loose ball through Ederson’s legs to open the scoring. However, City dug in and continued to press the issue, being rewarded for their efforts just under 15 minutes later when Raheem Sterling poked home from close range.

On a knife edge thereafter, Neymar then squandered an opportunity for the visitors to regain the lead before substitute Gabriel Jesus sealed an all-important win, side-footing City’s second goal from inside the penalty area following Bernardo Silva’s assist.

Man City fans praise Walker…

One man who lots of Citizens lavished with praise after the win, and a player who one fan believes ‘goes under the radar’, was England international Walker. The 31-year-old, who played a big part in City’s equaliser with his run around the back of PSG’s defence, also coped well with the likes of Neymar and Mbappe.

One moment which sticks out is his recovery run in the first half to put off the French superstar, who had a big chance in on goal, sparing John Stones’ blushes after he gave the ball away.

As highlighted by Manchester Evening News, Walker coped well with the away side’s counterattacks and played his part going forward, leaving little wonder why some fans hailed him as a ‘monster’.

Check out some of their best verdicts below:

Warner disappointed at ODI treatment

David Warner has revealed his frustration at the lack of communication from Australia’s selectors after he was axed from the one-day team in February

David Warner has revealed his frustration at the lack of communication from Australia’s selectors after he was axed from the one-day team in February. Warner was dropped six matches into his ODI career and was told of the decision by the selector Jamie Cox in the dressing-room before a game against New Zealand in Sydney.”Jamie Cox said to me, ‘You are not playing in the next game, and you’re not coming to Brisbane. You can call me and talk about it if you want’,” Warner told the Sydney Morning Herald. “I was a bit disappointed. I thought, ‘Well it’s your job to call me about it’.”Which was disappointing [not hearing from the selectors]. Obviously, I know what the reasons were. I’ve got to at least put a good performance in every three innings. If you’re not going to do that, then you are obviously going to get dropped. My goal is to be a bit more consistent this season. You know, I’ve got to work on that.”Warner has played one ODI since his axing, when he turned out against Scotland in Edinburgh last month and made a duck. His only innings of note in seven one-day internationals was an entertaining 69 against South Africa at the SCG.He remains in Australia’s Twenty20 side and will be keen to impress during the Champions League Twenty20 in India, when he will line up for New South Wales in a squad that features 10 international players. Warner has played only one first-class match and hopes to break into the Sheffield Shield side more regularly this summer to help his chance of playing more games for Australia.”I want to get into the four-day stuff,” Warner said. “Hopefully, I get that opportunity this season. I might not start, obviously, because we’ve got a full-strength team. I’ve just got to keep on scoring runs, putting runs on the board and things take care of itself.”
