Derbyshire sign four youngsters until 2012

Derbyshire have given contracts to Dan Redfern, Jake Needham, Jonathan Clare and Paul Borrington which will keep the players with the club until the end of 2012

Cricinfo staff26-Apr-2009Derbyshire have given contracts to Daniel Redfern, Jake Needham, Jonathan Clare and Paul Borrington which will keep the players with the club until the end of 2012.”Derbyshire have made this decision in order to back the young players who have come through our system to serve a proper apprenticeship in the game,” said the county’s head of cricket John Morris. “I see these players as being the future of this club, not just for the next four years, but for the next 15 years.”The supporters are beginning to see an improvement in where the team is going and if you can build the nucleus of your team around home grown talent, it is all good news for the club. It is very important to identify who are going to be big players in the future and we have got four young cricketers here who I believe are going to be part of this club for a long time.”Keith Loring, the club’s chief executive, said Morris was keen to get the young players on long contracts to make them feel settled and give Derbyshire continuity. “The club then moved very quickly and the players responded brilliantly which allowed us to get the job done straight away.”Mark Lawson, the former Yorkshire legspinner who had been brought to the club on a week-to-week contract, has signed a deal until the end of the season.

Everton: Fans react to injury update on duo

Richarlison is ahead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the injury comeback trail, Everton manager Rafael Benitez has said.

The England striker hasn’t featured for the Toffees since the 2-0 win at Brighton in August, having sustained a fractured toe (via Transfermarkt). He had scored in all three Premier League matches prior to that injury and bagged eight more than any of his team-mates last season.

Richarlison, meanwhile, has been missing since the 3-1 victory over Burnley on 13 September, when he was on the end of a brutal lunge from James Tarkowski.

How have Everton coped?

Salomon Rondon, a summer signing from Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Professional, has deputised in their absence but is yet to find the net for his new club.

Everton have won only one of their four matches without the duo, and that was against bottom side Norwich City at home. They have suffered defeats against Aston Villa and West Ham United and picked up a point against Manchester United.

As per Liverpool Echo, Benitez said: “I think Richarlison is closer, Dominic will take longer but Richarlison is getting closer.”

Everton fans fret over injury update

Twitter fan feed Toffee TV relayed the manager’s update on the injury-afflicted duo, and here’s what some Everton supporters made of it.

Luan festeja lugar na Seleção e mantém dúvida sobre transferência

MatériaMais Notícias

O grande nome do Grêmio no momento é Luan.

Quero aproveitar bastante a minha fase aqui – completou.

All-round Symonds sees Australia through

Andrew Symonds may have cut his Rastafarian beads, but he showed tonight there had been no cutback on his competitive spirit or his aptitude, as Australia levelled the series 1-1

Andrew Symonds may have cut his Rastafarian beads, but he showed tonight there had been no cutback on his competitive spirit or his aptitude as Australia levelled the series 1-1. His two-wicket over, in the face of a marauding Shoaib Akhtar, had kept Pakistan down to a par total, but his bigger contribution came with the bat when Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal threatened to run through Australia for the second time in a row.Afridi and Ajmal had undone James Hopes’ good work at the top, bringing the game right back into the balance, when Symonds came in to bat. Hopes, filling in for the injured Shaun Marsh at the top of the order, had put Australia on their way to a chase of a tricky 207, before Ajmal and Afridi struck in back-to-back overs. The contest was always going to come to life when the spinners came on. Before that Hopes had weathered the storm from hostile and accurate Shoaib and Umar Gul. That initial spell resulted in the early wicket of Brad Haddin, but Hopes counter-attacked and brought the run-rate within manageable proportions. From 19 for 1 in six overs, Hopes cut and drove Gul and Shoaib for three boundaries and a six in the next three overs. Australia reached 70 for 1 in 14 overs, when spin was first introduced.Australia tried to play the mind game, going for the batting Powerplay immediately, and trying to delay the introduction of the dangerous spinners. Pakistan played ball, and went on with Afridi and Ajmal anyway. From 70 in 14 they moved to 91 in 20 in a tense period of play.In the 21st, Ajmal got Watson with a doosra, the batsman looking to pull without reading the spin. In the end Watson tried unsuccessfully to pull out of the pull, and top-edged. In the next over, Afridi beat a Hopes sweep with a straight and full delivery.Batting was not easy then, what with Test fields in place and the ball turning big, and Australia coming off a monumental collapse in the previous game. Ajmal and Afridi attacked, but Symonds tackled them superbly. Even early on in the innings, he picked Ajmal’s doosra. For good measure he let Ajmal know every time he saw the away-spinner. His 58 comprised only four boundaries and a six, the first of which was the team’s first boundary in 17 overs. The value of Symonds’ knock grew when put in comparison with his partner Michael Clarke’s effort. Clarke struggled to pick the spin, and was patchy all the way through. At one point, out of a 58-run stand Clarke had scored only eight.Symonds’ sensible batting also coincided with Pakistan gradually running out of the spinners’ quota, and with a small total to defend they had to bring back the pace bowlers on. Once that happened it was a cruise for Australia, with close to four an over required.Even that small target was thanks to Symonds’ effective over at the death. Shoaib’s 14-ball 25 had lifted Pakistan from 176 for 7, but just when it looked he would take Pakistan to a more competitive total, Symonds struck with two in the 46th over to not even allow them a full quota of 50 overs. That was not the last twist of a slow yet dramatic first innings of the game. A disciplined Australia had done well to pull Pakistan back after they had threatened twice to move out of their grasp.First it was Younis Khan who recovered from a sluggish start to get into fluent mode only to be dismissed for 28. Then Shahid Afridi played an uncharacteristically responsible innings, but when he looked set to launch Pakistan into the safe zone, Hopes got him with seven overs to go.Following the early run-out of 17-year-old debutant Ahmed Shehzad, Pakistan made an edgy start. Salman Butt and Younis were literally edgy against Nathan Bracken and ODI debutant Doug Bollinger, both left-arm seamers. They troubled both the batsmen with their angle and movement both ways. By the end of the ninth over Pakistan had crawled to 28 for 1, having faced a maiden each from both the bowlers. With Hopes came the change of angle, and Younis helped himself to three boundaries in his first two overs. In the next seven overs Pakistan doubled their score, mainly via Younis who scored 20 off 14 during that period. The sight of Ben Laughlin lit his eyes up, a short loosener first up widened them further, and an edge resulted as he went to cut the leather off the ball. Two more wickets, punctuated by an especially asphyxiating spell by Bollinger, meant Pakistan were struggling in the middle overs, five down for 122. Bollinger went for 26 in his 10 overs, including a middle spell of four overs for five runs. But then Afridi lifted them, not looking to hit the ball out of the ground every time he faced up. The main feature of his innings was his late-cuts, and placement for quick runs. He actually faced 40 balls, the most he has since his 52-ball 85 against Zimbabwe last January. Afridi also read the game well, picking a slower ball early during the Powerplay, when Australia had both third man and fine leg up in the circle. That was his only six. Afridi, along with Ajmal, provided Australia with a tough examination, but he was not the best allrounder on the night.

Celtic had a nightmare on Dedryck Boyata

When Celtic signed Dedryck Boyata for a fee of £1.5m back in the summer of 2015, it very much appeared as if the Bhoys had secured something of a bargain.

Indeed, the centre-back had made 35 appearances for Premier League giants Manchester City after graduating from the Citizens’ academy, had been capped at international level by Belgium and was described by the former Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle – under whom Boyata spent a season on loan – as a “wonderful young talent.”

Coyle’s belief turned out to be accurate, as the now 30-year-old highly impressed during his four-season spell at Parkhead, making a total of 135 appearances for the Bhoys, scoring 15 goals and registering nine assists, as well as winning four consecutive Scottish Premiership titles and six domestic cup competitions with the Hoops.

However, after reportedly falling out with then Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers at the start of his final year while contracted with Celtic, and despite Neil Lennon’s hopes that the centre-back would pen a new deal, Boyata ran down his contract in Glasgow, joining Hertha Berlin on a free transfer in the summer of 2019.

Since his move to Germany, Boyata has further enhanced his reputation as a top-level defender, so far making 54 appearances for the Bundesliga side, being made club captain and seeing his Transfermarkt value rocket from £1.8m at the time of leaving Celtic to £7.2m today.

As such, Celtic’s decision to allow Boyata to enter the final year of his contract at Parkhead without tying down the £42k-per-week man to fresh terms appears to have been rather costly for the club. As, should the Bhoys have indeed convinced the centre-back to stay on in Glasgow, they would more than likely have received a significant transfer fee for his services – such as the £9m Fulham offered for him back in 2018.

However, with the Hoops now at least £7.2m out of pocket on the defender, it is a fairly easy argument to make that the club endured something of a nightmare when waving goodbye to a player who Jan Vertonghen dubbed an “immense” talent for absolutely nothing two years ago.

PCB asks Yousuf for ICL's response

The PCB has asked Mohammad Yousuf to obtain a response from the ICL to his resignation request as it moves forward in a bid to bring back the batsman into the national set-up

The PCB has asked Mohammad Yousuf to obtain a response from the ICL to his resignation request as it moves forward in a bid to bring back the batsman into the national set-up.Yousuf met PCB officials Wasim Bari, Mohammad Naeem and Zakir Khan at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore and told them he had resigned from the ICL. “We met Mohammad Yousuf today and he told us he wants to play for Pakistan and that he has resigned from the ICL,” Bari, PCB’s director HR and administration, told Cricinfo.”He showed us the resignation letter. We have asked him to come back to us with their response, whatever that is,” Bari said. “Once we have something from them, we can move forward. We have to take it step-by-step. He said he would get back to us as soon as possible.”Yousuf told reporters later he was not sure whether he would be able to obtain an NOC from the ICL but wanted to play for Pakistan. But the board did not specify whether they were looking for an NOC specifically, just a response of some kind. That indicates that the door remains open, for now, for the matter to move forward even if Yousuf does not get an NOC. At almost the same time, the ICL released a statement paving the way for certain contracted players to move back into the mainstream. An ICL statement said a few domestic and overseas players had asked to be released to pursue cricket with state or national associations and the league would not stop them from doing so. It is unclear at the moment whether Yousuf is one of those international players. The PCB, in line with boards around the world, recently announced an amnesty for ICL players who gave up their links to the league by May 31. But unlike the BCCI which announced a cooling-off period of a year before ICL players could be eligible for national and international cricket again, the PCB said it would go on a case-by-case basis: some could come back immediately and others after some time. ICL players from Pakistan are already allowed to play domestic cricket.Once the documentation is in, it is believed that Yousuf might be one of those players who comes back sooner rather than later. Pakistan’s batting in ODIs has struggled without his presence, particularly in the recent ODI series against Australia, but Bari would only say that the board would “go by its stated policy. The meeting was a very positive one and we want to take positive steps from here.”Yousuf has left the ICL once before, when he signed with them in 2007, but was lured out of the contract by the then PCB administration. Legal wrangles ensued, which stopped him from getting an IPL contract in 2008. But he played for Pakistan during the year, before suddenly opting to join the ICL again in November, on the day he was picked in an ODI squad to play against West Indies.

Celtic: Injury expert reacts to Christopher Jullien latest

Injury expert Ben Dinnery has been talking to Football Insider regarding an update on Celtic defender Christopher Jullien.

The Lowdown: Jullien back in training

Jullien, who was labelled as ‘excellent’ by Neil Lennon, is yet to feature in 2021 after suffering a serious injury in the final game of 2020.

The Hoops brought in four centre-backs over the summer, possibly due to Jullien’s injury, with Ange Postecoglou still yet to see the French centre-back in action.

He has returned to training at Lennoxtown earlier this month, however, it seems as if the towering defender won’t be ready for competitive action for the next three games.

The Latest: Dinnery reacts to recent update

Postecoglou recently confirmed, as cited by Football Insider, that Jullien won’t be available until after the next international break.

That means he’ll miss games against Livingston, Ferencvaros and Dundee, with the earliest possible chance of a return seemingly against St Johnstone on November 20.

Dinnery was giving his thoughts to Football Insider regarding the update, to which he said:

“It’s always going to be difficult when you’re in the gym and training on a one-to-one basis.

“You’re missing out with the banter and if the team is doing well, you want to be a part of it.

“The initial timeline with his injury was in and around four months, and now we are approaching 10 months.

“The important thing with any long-term injury is to yourself small goals. Rather than looking to the end, it’s all about small motivating factors.

“It will be dispiriting, but it needs to be contextualised. It’s a risk and reward strategy.

“You would rather have an extra month out than risk returning too early and putting yourself out of action for even longer.

“At this moment in time, learning that you’re not going to be ready until late November is massively upsetting.

“But there is another six months left of the season and a lot of football to be played.”

The Verdict: Frustrating, but the right decision

The last thing Celtic would want is to rush Jullien back too quickly, as Dinnery mentions. The Hoops don’t exactly need to, either, with Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers becoming regulars in a solid backline recently – the latter in particular was praised by Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish earlier this season.

Celtic have conceded just twice in their five October fixtures, a record that should keep Postecoglou calm about not bringing back Jullien too soon.

It’ll be interesting to see if Jullien will be a regular when he is fully fit, especially as he is the club’s sixth most expensive signing of all time, but if Starfelt and Carter-Vickers continue to impress, he could remain on the sidelines despite being ready to play.
