Leeds United: Noel Whelan drops Raphinha verdict

Noel Whelan has paid tribute to the work rate of Leeds United ace Raphinha, claiming that his determination to get back and defend is something even Lionel Messi wouldn’t show [Football Insider].

The Lowdown: Raphinha, someone who has made an immediate impact in English football

Making an immediate impact since signing for the Whites from Rennes last season, the 24-year-old has gone on to register 16 goal contributions in 34 games for his current employers; seven goals and nine assists [Transfermarkt].

Earning adulation in high-places, Raphinha was compared to Cristiano Ronaldo by Manchester United legend Roy Keane following Leeds United’s 1-1 draw away to Burnley last weekend [Leeds Live].

The Latest: Noel Whelan echoes Roy Keane sentiment in latest interview

Echoing similar sentiment in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, former Elland Road icon Whelan has been raving over the productivity of the 58k-p/w man, stating:

“Raphinha is fantastic on the ball, great on the eye and can produce moments of magic that other players simply can’t.

“But what I really like is his work out of possession. He is not afraid to really work hard, track back and double-up with the full-back. It is an attribute you sometimes don’t get with technically talented players. They do one side of it but not the other. That is not the case with Raphinha though.

“When I watch him he is relentless. He works his socks off. You would not see Messi doing that and you would not even see Ronaldo doing it anymore.

“A high work rate is what Marcelo Bielsa demands though so you would not get away with that.”

The Verdict: Raphinha will continue to be a key player for LUFC in 2021/22

Throwing some pretty extraordinary plaudits his way, popular-ex pro turned pundit Whelan makes a very compelling statement that accurately describes Raphinha’s diverse range of qualities on the pitch.

Last term, his ability to work hard was in full view, with the former Sporting Lisbon man making 34 successful tackles [Premier League].

Of course, being able to do the ugly side of the game is a pre-requisite of Marcelo Bielsa’s style of play, something which helped his side to earn a commendable ninth-placed finish in 2020/21.

The Argentinian will be hoping for more of the same in the forthcoming months.

Mushfiqur and Junaid star for Bangladesh

Bangladesh may not be providing South Africa the most stern examination before Australia next month, but for the first time in this series they challenged the hosts with a combative performance to reach 250. Fifteen minutes before stumps on the first day at Centurion, Mashrafe Mortaza capped an encouraging day for Bangladesh with the wicket of Neil McKenzie for a duck.Their performance today was in stark contrast to their dismal effort in Bloemfontein last week when they only managed to survive 88.3 overs in two innings. But this was a different story, with Junaid Siddique cracking 67 while Mushfiqur Rahim’s elegantly crafted 65 lifted his side to their highest first-innings score since April 2006. There were signs of encouragement for Morne Morkel, the fast bowler who has struggled with his consistency, but again he mixed the sublime with the scattergun. In fact, Bangladesh improved with each session. Choosing to bat on what is traditionally an encouraging surface for the seamers, and with South Africa calling up Monde Zondeki to replace Paul Harris, it seemed perfectly logical that they would succumb to their long-standing vulnerability to pace. Yet they showed early promise, particularly Junaid who took a liking to Dale Steyn, who had a poor day. Holding the pose, Junaid drove him casually down the ground while Tamim Iqbal nudged and nurdled singles, dispatching the occasional handsome cover-driven four.Having struggled with his line and length, Morkel finally settled into a good rhythm to hit Junaid with a viper-spitting bouncer which hammered into his unprotected left arm. A fuller delivery accounted for Tamim on 31, who edged him behind, causing celebrations of relief from an embattled fast bowler. He followed it up with a slightly slower and fuller delivery to Mohammad Ashraful who, with concreted feet, offered a simple return catch.A lunchtime score of 64 for 3 summed up the situation. Bangladesh had begun promisingly, only to throw it away before the interval, but Junaid continued to flourish after the break as South Africa were made to wait. Jacques Kallis produced several unplayables, gaining prodigious swing to Mehrab Hossain jnr, but as ever it was Makhaya Ntini who made the breakthrough when Mehrab was drawn into a loose swish outside his off stump.Junaid grew in confidence, upper-cutting Kallis over point for a confident and tone-setting boundary, but he showed his true class when on the front foot. A sweetly timed off-drive sped for four off Ntini, bowling a touch too full, while Steyn – curiously ineffective throughout the day – was punched off the back foot for four more. A streaky, uppish cut flew past gully to bring up his third Test fifty, an elegant example of the talent in Bangladesh batsmanship. At the other end, however, came evidence of Bangladesh’s difficulties. Raqibul Hasan, making his debut, showed potential with a supremely elegant flick off his pads, but couldn’t cope with Morkel’s bounce, fending him to Smith for his second catch. Shakib-al-Hasan entertained with a cameo of 30 off 27 balls but Bangladesh needed rather more substance than a brief flurry. And they received it from Mushfiqur, batting a little too low, frankly, at No. 8. With strong wrists and firm cuts, he batted with great aggression – driving Kallis beautifully for four; slapping another wide from Morkel through the same cover region before swinging Steyn for two sublime sixes over midwicket. He was dropped on 23 by Mark Boucher – one of two spills by the wicketkeeper – but two more fours off Steyn took him through to a superb fifty. His tenth-wicket partnership with Mahbubul Alam (who contributed just 1) of 56 spanned just 12 overs. South Africa were increasingly incensed, but were guilty of bowling too wide.Granted, 250 is not a total to challenge one of the world’s best line-ups, but Bangladesh ensured it was their day in the sun when Mortaza found a brute of a delivery to square up McKenzie. He could have had Hashim Amla, too, but the ball appeared to brush the batsman’s pads rather than his glove down the leg side. Nevertheless, with South Africa trailing by 230, for the first time in this series Bangladesh have put up a fight.

Nuno must turn to promising Spurs starlet

Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Santo has shown that he isn’t afraid to turn to the club’s promising youth system since being handed the job in the summer.

For example, Japhet Tangana and Oliver Skipp have started all four of their Premier League matches thus far, whilst names like Dilan Markanday and Dane Scarlett have featured on the bench, too.

Spurs’ unbeaten start to the season came to an end this weekend and it merely highlighted one of Nuno’s biggest problems in north London right now – their lack of creativity and drive from the engine room.

Perhaps he ought to turn to another academy gem in a bid to fix the problem.

Players like Bukayo Saka, Harvey Elliott and Mason Greenwood have shown that if a young player does have genuine talent, then it doesn’t matter what age they are gifted an opportunity in the big time.

So taking a punt on 17-year-old gem Alfie Devine could be a wild but smart call to make, especially as he continues to light it up for the U23 squad despite still being in his teenage years.

On the same day ten-man Spurs were well-beaten by Crystal Palace, the midfield gem was scoring a brace against his former club, Liverpool, leading to many supporters expressing their desire to see him promoted into the senior set-up.

That took his tally to three goals and one assist across four Premier League 2 appearances this campaign, whilst overall for the club, he has provided eight goals and two assists, including a strike on his senior debut in the FA Cup last term, as per Transfermarkt.

Devine has captained England at youth level and can play anywhere in midfield – no.6. no.8 and no.10.

According to The Athletic, he is a ‘well-rounded central midfielder with an eye for goal’ and ‘is said to have an exceptional attitude, drawing comparisons with Harry Kane.’

These are attributes that has been echoed by his former Wigan academy boss Gregor Rioch.

“His possession stats are very high and he passes the ball forwards, rather than sideways and backwards. He can play holding midfielder and link play up, he can also break forward from midfield with and without the ball and grab a goal,” he told The Athletic.

Similarly, another former coach in Harry Brooks lauded the teenager as “the whole package,” adding: “The talent, the attitude, the ability to always turn it on. The tenacity, the aggression. When it comes to looking at that whole picture, he’s the best player in the academy. He could play for England one day.”

Also praised as “so special” by The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare, it could be time for the Portuguese boss to take a punt on Devine. Of course, he’s still young and raw but he is a player that could be unleashed as a secret weapon throughout the season

But at the very least, he deserves a permanent place in the first-team set-up. Spurs could really do with a midfielder that can contribute in that final third.

Is this Celtic’s dream Dom McKay successor?

Events in the boardroom at Celtic are unclear; especially when you have a whole host of cooks overseeing the broth at Parkhead.

Dermot Desmond is the Hoops’ chief and ultimately has the final say on important matters regarding the Hoops.

His son, Ross, is now playing a more prominent role in proceedings too but just months after finding a new manager, Celtic will also need to find themselves a new chief executive officer for the second time in a year.

Peter Lawwell retired from the role at the end of last season and was replaced by Dominic McKay.

The former Scottish rugby chief had a ten-year plan to modernise Celtic and played a major hand in Ange Postecoglou’s appointment as manager.

However, he decided to step down last Friday, citing ‘personal reasons’ for his departure.

It has since been made apparent that he may have jumped before he was pushed after disagreements with Desmond over the future of the football club.

McKay has been replaced by Michael Nicholson on a temporary basis but it remains to be seen who becomes the permanent CEO in the next few months.

According to the Daily Record, one suitor for Celtic could be Susan Whelan. The 58-year-old is currently the CEO at Premier League club Leicester City where she has done a quite magnificent job.

Desmond has used his Irish connections to get people into Parkhead before and he could look to use them again here.

That being said, it will be difficult to lure Whelan away from such an attractive club that’s growing all the time.

She currently works with former Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers, someone who holds her in particularly high esteem. He once said: “From Top to Susan, in her role in terms of balancing everything between the financial side and the running of the actual business, to Jon on the football element, it’s been excellent.”

Having played a key role in finding Richard Scudamore’s replacement at the top of the Premier League hierarchy, she is a well-liked character throughout English football.

She had strong connections with Ed Woodward at Manchester United and as of 2019 she was one of the top 25 businesswomen in Ireland.

One Premier League CEO once told The Athletic: “From a business point of view, Susan is known as a good operator and a respected and effective contributor to Premier League shareholder meetings and the various debates we have.”

Pivotally, she also has a reputation for being honest and straightforward when it comes to transfer dealings.

This was one of the most difficult things for Celtic during the course of the summer.

Reporter Kieran Devlin wrote the following this week: “Sources have spoken of receiving mixed, contradictory messages from different club figures. One described Celtic as being “painfully slow” in some discussions and several mentioned not receiving replies to messages for days or sometimes weeks. When replies did come, they would sometimes be from a different club figure.”

Therefore, Whelan could significantly improve this aspect of the club if she replaces McKay at Parkhead.

She is fantastic at her job and all of her work so far has led to a remarkable Premier League title triumph for Leicester, a spell in the Champions League and also an FA Cup win last summer.

Whelan is a quiet voice within football but once her opinion is heard, people stand up and take notice. Celtic must take notice now.

Tanvir unworried by prospect of missing IPL

Sohail Tanvir, the Pakistan fast bowler, says there are plenty of other opportunities to play cricket even if he misses out on the IPL

With the tension in India-Pakistan relations showing few signs of easing, Pakistan cricketers are unsure of participation in the next season of the IPL. However, Sohail Tanvir, who helped Rajasthan Royals to the inaugural title as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker last season, is not too concerned about the possibility of missing the competition.”Even if I don’t get to play in the IPL next season, I don’t think it would be a big setback for me or my career,” he told PTI. “There are a lot of other opportunities to play cricket in other countries.” He has signed a short five-match contract with South Australia for the domestic Twenty20 tournament that began on Friday and said that playing in England was another option he would explore. Some IPL franchises have expressed uncertainty over the future of Pakistan players on their books, mostly because it might be a difficult prospect logistically if relations between the two governments worsen. Some, such as Delhi Daredevils, have said they are keen to keep Shoaib Malik, for example, on for this season.Tanvir, who was signed up by the Royals for US$100,000, was not worried about the money he would potentially lose if forced to skip the second season. “The board is already looking after our financial interests properly so for me missing the IPL is not a big deal.”He also emphasised that his top priority was representing the national team. “Playing for Pakistan is far more important for me than any other cricket,” he said.”Nothing can replace the feeling of nationalism one feels when representing your country.”Tanvir has had plenty of success in the Twenty20 format so far, first coming into the international spotlight when the batsmen struggled to pick his apparent wrong-foot action during the World Twenty20 last year.Tanvir, though, felt it was his variations, rather than his uncoventional action, which made him tick in Twenty20s, a ploy he is hoping to use successfully during his South Australia stint as well. “For those guys that haven’t faced me they can see my videos and they can analyse me,” he told . “So it’s not more difficult for them.”If the bowler is a bit clever, you still have a chance to get wickets and contain the batsmen because the batsmen have to go after the bowler on every ball.”South Australia captain Graham Manou hoped Tanvir will boost a side having a poor season so far – they are currently bottom of the Sheffield Shield and second last in the one-day competition. “Fingers crossed he can come out and do what he did in the IPL for us,” Manou said. “An international player, seasoned campaigner so hopefully he can turn it on when required.”
