SPCL 3 – Ventnor edging towards to safety

Ventnor are edging nearer first season safety in Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3 after having to virtually rebuild the side that monopolized Hampshire League cricket in recent seasons

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)26-Jul-2002Ventnor are edging nearer first season safety in Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3 after having to virtually rebuild the side that monopolized Hampshire League cricket in recent seasons. They would certainly have fancied their chances of continuing to sweep aside all comers had the likes of Mark Garaway, Steve Snell, Ian Hilsum and the late Walter Masimula remained at Steephill. But when the Islanders stepped up for their Division 3 debut against New Milton back in mid-May, only skipper Mark Whyte, Mark Fletcher, Andy White and Neil Dodds of last season’s undefeated County Division 1 title winning side remained.Predictably, it’s been hard work for Ventnor’s patched-up side ever since. They beat Havant II, Redlynch & Hale and Waterlooville convincingly enough. In between, they suffered seven defeats which kept them in the danger zone. But a fourth win, by a six-wicket margin over last year’s HL runners-up Hartley Wintney, has put Ventnor to within touching distance of safety.Hartley Wintney, in serious danger of immediate relegation themselves after losing all but two of their nine games, totalled 235-9 (Andy White 4-40) on the Steephill shirtfront, with Australian Jimmy Castrisos (78) supported by Mark Digweed (32) and Dave Almond (31).Ventnor got home with five overs to spare – Mark Fletcher hitting 104 and sharing a century opening partnership with Neil Westhorpe (36) before Island legend Jeff Hose belted 63 off 46 balls as only he knows how !The win lifted Ventnor into fourth from bottom position but didn’t stop skipper Mark Whyte from dropping his teammates a few reminders about the hard work still to be done."We’ve got five games left after today’s visit by Alton and those matches include St Cross Symondians and Purbrook, two teams battling to go up – so there’s a fair way to go yet," he pointed out.Poor old Redlynch & Hale all but gave up hope of survival when they hit 272-5 – only to lose by six wickets to Ventnor a month ago.And when Ian Bryan decided to get wed last Saturday, it left club stalwart Iain Souter with virtually a reverse strength side to take to Gosport Borough. The outcome was inevitable – Gosport piling up 322-5 through Nathan Collins (85), Stuart Magee (54), John Adams (51) and young Craig Stares (43).But Redlynch made a creditable 205 reply, with Lee Wordley celebrating his senior debut to the hilt, carrying his bat for 107 after taking 3-56.Hook & Newnham Basics remain in deep trouble too after a rain-adjusted 26-run defeat by Paultons, who 258 all out owed much to tail end pair Peter Lamb and Lee Rayner.Tony Richman (74) had dominated Paultons’ 196-9, but Lamb (40) and Rayner (17 not out) frustrated Hook with a last-wicket stand of 62.Hook were 106-1 – chasing an abridged Paultons total of 131 – when the game was abandoned, some 25.3 overs into the evening session.Hambledon fancied their chances of improving their lowly status when Hampshire’s Derek Kenway struck a glorious 135 not out against promotion outsiders New Milton at Ridge Meadow.Kenway’s innings, which formed an 80-5 rescue act with John Burdekin (48), was "a joy to watch" according to New Milton skipper Steve Watts. But, once Ryan Beck got into his stride, Hambldon’s 243-8 was always in danger."He went out to the middle and took complete control," said Watts (33), who saw both Richard Wilson (26) and latterly Dean Miller (48) fire Milton to a five-wicket win and into fifth spot.Waterlooville’s anxieties were eased by a Chris Baumann inspired 168-run victory over Portsmouth II at Rowlands Avenue. The Queenslander, who captains the Ville, hammered a blistering 147 in his side’s massive 280 all out.Once ever-youthful Stan Rudder (3-27) had ripped out Portsmouth’s top order, only the margin of victory remained. Ali Love’s 4-21 saw Portsmouth bowled out for 112.St Cross Symondians began a crunch three-match spell today, which could decide on of the two promotion positions. The outcome of today’s visit to Purbrook and the forthcoming games with New Milton and Hursley Park will have a significant bearing on the destination of the title.Mark Parker’s domineering century against Leckford, who tumbled to 115 all out in the face of a mountainous 281-7, gave St Cross a useful five-point lead over Purbrook, who were without key players Mike Hennessy, Ian Hinter and Craig Williams this afternoon.Purbrook posted a tidy 257-8 after Will Prozesky (47) had fired a ten-runs-an-over start against Flamingo at The Holt.Hennessy, with an overdue 76, and Hunter (32) helped Purbrook on their way before Flamingo’s, going nicely under Tom Cledwyn (28), sagged to 113-8.Last pair Dave Breach (28) and Dave Wright (21) added an unbroken 51 for the last wicket to take the reply to 181-9 (Mark Stanley 3-28).Alton, who appeared on course for a top two slot after beating Purbrook three weeks ago, desperately needed to win at Ventnor today if they were to avert a repetition of last year’s promotion slip up.The four-wicket defeat by Hursley Park was Alton’s second in a fortnight and sent Julian Ballinger’s troops down to third spot.Alton were going along well when Michael Heffernan (46) departed at 100-2, but never recovered sufficiently to defend an eventual 195-8.When Hursley lost three wickets for eight runs to slump to 71-4 (Jason Marr 39), it was anyone’s game.Matt Harvey’s unbeaten half-century, aided by Rob Lowe (24) and Ben Smyth (24 not out), saw the Park home.Bashley’s Jo Hall won’t want to remember his visit to Havant in a hurry, having damaged an eye socket and had eight stitches inserted in a facial wound after a rising ball from David Wade had gone through the grill of his visor.Hall, who spent five hours undergoing treatment in Queen Alexandra Hospital, was still suffering from blurred vision four days after being hit and had no chance of playing against Gosport Borough today."The staff at the hospital were absolutely superb," said Hall, who was not the only casualty.Veteran spinner Bob Paul, a recent recipient of the June bowling prize, pulled a hamstring, leaving Bashley with only nine fit men.It was no surprise that Havant won, Jon Owen’s 71 top scoring in a total of 177 before depleted Bashley were dismissed for 110, Matt Gover taking 4-10, his best figures for years.

LFC fans fume at Henderson contract claim

Some Liverpool supporters have been left fuming after a report emerged claiming that talks have stalled over a new deal for Jordan Henderson.

The Reds captain has enjoyed a memorable career at Anfield, now spending 10 years at the club. After overcoming a tough start to life on Merseyside, Henderson has grown into both a phenomenal skipper and top-class footballer, winning both the Champions League and Premier League.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

The 31-year-old’s current Liverpool deal expires in the summer of 2023, but there has been some hope that he will extend his stay beyond that date.

A fresh report has emerged, however, with The Athletic’s James Pearce and David Ornstein claiming that there is genuine uncertainty over Henderson’s long-term future. No progress is thought to have been made over a new deal despite talks going on for a long time, suggesting that the midfielder might not finish his career at Anfield.

No sledging as Bill Brown turns 90

BRISBANE, July 31 AAP – Bill Brown has turned 90 and Australia’s oldest living Test cricketer still loves the sport, even though he’s not taken with sledging or one-day matches.

Michael Crutcher31-Jul-2002BRISBANE, July 31 AAP – Bill Brown has turned 90 and Australia’s oldest living Test cricketer still loves the sport, even though he’s not taken with sledging or one-day matches.Brown celebrated his birthday in Brisbane today with family and friends, including Walter Hadlee, who led New Zealand against Brown’s Australians in 1946.It was the only time Brown captained Australia but he packed plenty into his 22-Test career, including two centuries at Lord’s and hundreds of days alongside some of the game’s greatest names. He played through most of the Don Bradman era, played against English stars such as Len Hutton and Walter Hammond, and finished his career as part of the Invincibles tour of England in 1948.Brown still follows cricket closely from his Brisbane home, with a vivid memory of his playing days, and today repeated his admiration for Australian Test captain Steve Waugh. But he wasn’t speaking in the same glowing terms of sledging and match-fixing, while admitting he didn’t follow one-day matches closely, preferring the “cut-and-thrust” of Tests.”I obviously find match-fixing abhorrent,” Brown said.”And one of the key things which has crept into the game which I’m not keen about would be the sledging.”I don’t like any form of sledging, that’s it.”We asked Sir Donald Bradman once about sledging and what he would do and he said `I would give them one warning and if they didn’t stop it they wouldn’t be in the side anymore’.”We had a far better accord with the opposition players than they do now although no longer being a player I can’t say too much.”It’s hard to imagine Brown being anything but pleasant during his long life and marriage to Barbara.Brown said he didn’t know much about life aged in the nineties, except that he would use the same formula which he used while bating in the nervous nineties.”Plenty of short, sharp singles,” Brown said.”With anything, you need a bit of luck and I’ve been fortunate to have a wonderful life.”According to cricket statistician Ross Dundas, Brown becomes the seventh Australian Test player to live into his nineties.Australia’s oldest Test cricketer was Ken Burn, who died in 1956 aged 93 years and 307 days.

Richarlison e Sornoza decidem, e Fluminense vence bem o Macaé

SPCL 2 & 3 – Hursley Park's promotion hopes challenge ahead

Hursley Park put their Southern Electric Premier League promotion hopes firmly on the line against runaway Division 3 leaders Purbrook at the Quarters tomorrow (SAT), 1pm

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)22-Aug-2002Hursley Park put their Southern Electric Premier League promotion hopes firmly on the line against runaway Division 3 leaders Purbrook at the Quarters tomorrow (SAT), 1pm.But they go into the 50-over contest against the near promotion certainties full of optimism after winning five of their last six matches. It’s a run that has cemented Hursley in third place, significantly only four points behind Winchester neighbours St Cross Cross Symondians, who visit Hook & Newnham Basics. With only two matches remaining, Hursley know it’s effectively win or bust against Purbrook, who – 14 points clear of St Cross – can probably afford to lose to Hursley Park and Ventnor next week and still be promoted."But that’s not the aim at all," says Purbrook captain Alan Mengham, whose takes a full strength side to The Quarters, "We’ve established a fair sized lead at the top and our aim is to be promoted as Premier 3 champions."Purbrook have gorged 232 points from 13 completed games and will be virtually certain of being crowned champions if they beat Hursley.Steve Shaw will be assured of a warm welcome at the King George V ground when he makes a sentimental return to play against his former Hook & Newnham Basics teammates. It promises to be a stern test for full-strength St Cross as Hook have rediscovered their form and have cruised into a mid-table slot in recent weeks after looking potential relegation candidates for the first half of the season.Any slip by St Cross could be crucial with ever-improving Gosport Borough and Havant II moving up fast on the rails.Gosport, now in a best-yet fourth slot after a useful winning sequence, will fancy their chances at struggling Hambledon, while Havant 2nd XI captain Mat Gover is confident of success against his old club, Flamingo. The situation at the bottom of the table could change if Redlynch & Hale follow last week’s long overdue win over Paultons and win at Hartley Wintney, who lie second from bottom.Relegation is virtually certain for the losers. The Hampshire Academy could be breaking open the celebratory champagne if they beat United Services on the Rose Bowl Nursery ground. One win from the last two games – their season finishes at Trojans – will take the county youngsters out of reach of second-placed Easton & Martyr Worthy, who visit relegation fighters Rowledge.US gave the Young Hawks a real fright earlier in the season, losing by one wicket at Burnaby Road, but they are badly weakened by unavailabilitiues. Top wicket taker Damien Carson does, however, return.Easton know they have a real scrap on their hands against Rowledge, who are scrapping for every point in a bid to claw away from second from bottom place.Rowledge, who pulled off a fine win at Lymington last week, were agonisingly beaten by two runs in last Sunday’s National Village Championship semi-final."The way we played last weekend has given everyone great belief we can pulled this one off," says Rowledge skipper Dave Booton. The Farnham club will be at full strength, but Easton could be without their influential skipper Steve Green.Winchester KS can do Rowledge a massive favour if they beat Hungerford at River Park.Lymington fly back from a tiring tour of Dublin for a home match with Trojans, who need to take 44 points from their final two matches – their last is against the Hampshire Academy – to stand any chance of avoiding the drop.Opener Ollie Kelly, who has spent the past week icing a badly bruised ankle, is confident he will be fit for Sparsholt, who host Old Tauntonians & Romsey at the Norman Edwards Memorial Ground.Skipper Rob Savage is expected back, but the absence of Charles Forward will seriously weaken OTs, for whom Ian Tulk returns.

WHU fans rage at Origi news

West Ham United fans are unhappy after it was suggested by reliable club insider ExWHUemployee that Divock Origi is the club’s back-up plan if they fail to sign Tammy Abraham this summer.

David Moyes completed a fantastic job last term as he led the Hammers to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League and a place in the Europa League in the process.

What makes that success even more remarkable is the fact the Hammers only had one recognised striker in Michail Antonio for the second half of the season after Sebastien Haller was sold to Ajax.

As they compete on four fronts this coming campaign, they cannot afford to have only one centre-forward. They have been linked with Abraham, but according to ExWHUemployee, the Irons will move for 26-year-old Origi if they can’t capture the Chelsea man.

The news was shared on Twitter by @WestHam_Central, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Mustafá contestou a ação.

Fabinho hails Liverpool teammate Tsimikas

Fabinho has paid a huge compliment to Liverpool teammate Kostas Tsimikas, calling him his ‘idol’ and hailing his qualities as a footballer.

The Lowdown: Tsimikas struggles at Liverpool

The Greece left-back made the move to Anfield from Olympiakos last summer, but he endured a tough first season at his new club. The 25-year-old was limited to just six minutes of Premier League action in the entire campaign, with injuries often holding him back.

It left Andrew Robertson playing almost every minute of every league game and that workload seemed to take its toll on the Scot, who went five months without a top-flight assist last term.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

The Latest: Fabinho hails teammate

Fabinho clearly thinks highly of Tsimikas, though, following a fan Q&A from the Brazilian on Instagram on Sunday.

Responding to a message from his colleague [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], the 27-year-old outlined his love for the Reds left-back, who he labelled “my idol”.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/the-latest-liverpool-transfer-news-8/” title=”The latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Breakout season for Tsimikas?

Liverpool need Tsimikas to come good this season in order for him to provide competition for Robertson and allow the 27-year-old a breather from time to time.

The early signs are good, with the former Olympiakos man looking impressive in pre-season to date and appearing fresh ahead of the new season.

Fabinho has been a mainstay of Liverpool’s team over the past two seasons and, having overcome a partly difficult first year at Anfield himself, the Brazilian’s high praise of Tsimikas should not be taken lightly. Hopefully the Greek defender will take off for the Reds like his Brazilian team-mate has done.

In other news, two clubs are believed to be interested in signing one Liverpool player this summer. Read more here.
