Gers’ Kennedy named in UEFA TOTY

Glasgow Rangers ace Kai Kennedy has been named in the UEFA Youth League Team of the Year for the 2019/20 season.

The Lowdown: Kennedy shines in Youth League

The Ibrox starlet enjoyed himself during the 2019/20 UEFA Youth League campaign, managing three assists in five games in the competition (Transfermarkt).

Those performances appear to have earned him particular praise from European football’s governing body.

The Latest: Kennedy in TOTY

UEFA have named Kennedy in their Youth League Team of the Year for the 2019/20 campaign (UEFA via The Daily Record).

He has been named alongside players from Real Madrid, Juventus and Ajax, while Croatian defender Joseph Gvardiol has represented his country’s at this summer’s European Championship.

The Verdict: Knocking on the door

Kennedy has previously been compared to Gers legend Davie Cooper by John Robertson (Glasgow Live), but he has had some issues with the Ibrox hierarchy in the past. He was said to be pushing for a move away from the club, refusing to sign a new contract (Football Insider) last summer amid interest from the likes of Manchester City and Barcelona.

Ultimately he remained at Ibrox and he is now starting to knock on the door of Steven Gerrard’s first team squad. Last season, he impressed in a loan spell with Raith Rovers, scoring once and providing four assists in 16 league matches. Clearly blessed with plenty of ability judging by his UEFA recognition, Gerrard may feel that Kennedy has earned the right to compete for a first team place at Ibrox next season.

In other news, Rangers ramp up their interest in this 27-year-old.

South Africa break duck with 65-run win at Newlands

There have been times during the Standard Bank one-day series when hell seemed more likely to freeze over than a South African victory over Australia

Peter Robinson09-Apr-2002There have been times during the Standard Bank one-day series when hell seemed more likely to freeze over than a South African victory over Australia. On a glacial night at Newlands, however, Shaun Pollock’s side finally broke their duck with a 65-run victory in the last meeting between the two teams this summer.South Africa’s delight at winning was understandably tempered by the fact that Australia had long since lifted the series. It was also an untidy sort of game, initially reduced to 43 overs a side after drizzle had held up the start for nearly two hours and then further cut down to 39 overs each after a 27-minute break for rain during the South African innings.Even so, after all the miseries endured by South African supporters this season a win, any win, will have served to keep the chill at bay, at least for the time being. With Graeme Smith again looking the part as a new South African opener, the home side put together a most respectable 249 for seven in their 39 overs. Out came Messrs Duckworth and Lewis to decree that the Australian target had advanced by one run to 251, but in the end it made scant difference as the tourists were bowled out for 185 in 39.3 overs. All season long Shaun Pollock has been suggesting that if only a little luck would run South Africa’s way, then his side would be competitive. They had that little bit of luck on Tuesday, mostly in the guise of an Australian team whose minds seemed to have already caught the plane home.In the circumstances it is difficult to know quite how much credence to give this South African victory. The sensible view, perhaps, is not very much. At the same time, the home team will take their winter break in a slightly better frame of mind than had they been beaten 6-0 in the series.Understandably, Australia were some way off the pace for this game. They didn’t bowl particularly well as Smith made 73, Nicky Boje 49 and Jonty Rhodes a quickfire 39 off 24 balls at the end of the innings and then they didn’t bat very well either.Shaun Pollock snapped up three early wickets as, for once, the new Australian opening pair misfired and even though Michael Bevan was able to ride his luck for a 63-ball 55, Boje spun his way through the tail to finally extinguish any prospect of an Australian victory.Boje took the last five Australian wickets for 21 to earn himself the man of the match award, the first won by a South African during the series, while Ricky Ponting picked up the man of the series award.Even so, this rare South African success in no way disguises the gap that has opened between Australia and the rest of the cricket world. Pollock has suggested a comparison with Tiger Woods who opened up a chasm between himself and his peers before the likes of Ernie Els and Retief Goosen lifted their games sufficiently to haul him back in again. It is an apt metaphor and the challenge that now faces South Africa, not to mention teams like England, New Zealand, India and Pakistan, is to raise their own standards to the Australian benchmark. In both Test and one-day cricket Australia have wiped the floor with South Africa this summer and although erratic selection and off-field squabbling both played their parts in South Africa’s steep decline, the real truth of it is that Australia may well be as good a team as any to have played in the modern era.

ODI DEBUT: Still awaitedBIOGRAPHY (April 2002)Allan Mwayenga, left-arm seamer at the CFX Academy, has followed a slightly unusual course to first-class cricket. He had little or no contact with the game at junior school, and was only converted at the age of about 13 due to his father’s job.His father works at St John’s College in Harare, and he remembers as a youngster he and his brother Waddington, two years younger and now also a first-class cricketer, used to watch Mr Bill Flower, father of Test players Andy and Grant, coaching in the nets there. This was how their interest was kindled, and Bill soon took an interest himself in the two boys.Allan attended Vainona High School, and now started playing there. The two boys’ great natural talent quickly led to their being the leading players in a weak team, which he found difficult. By the time he was in Form Two, at the age of 15, he had forced his way into the school first team, where he spent three years. His best performance for Vainona was against Gateway School at a cricket festival, where he took eight for 16. He also scored 118 in a match against Lord Malvern High School, his only century to date, sharing a large partnership with his brother, who scored 95.In 1998 he was selected to play in a three-day match for a Mashonaland Under-19 side at Harare South, but this was to be his only taste of representative cricket. The following year he left school and found a job with the Zimbabwe Cricket Union coaching, having successfully past a coaching course at Harare Sports Club. He coached in Masvingo before returning to Harare, moving to Kutama College in Norton. He joined Old Georgians Sports Club in 1997, his best performance being three for 11 in eight overs. He has now moved to Country Club, which is clearly below his level. He has also played winter cricket for Enterprise, with five wickets for 20 runs as his best performance. His ambition, though, has always been to play representative cricket, and this led him to apply successfully to join the CFX Academy in 2002.His main strength as a batsman is off his legs, while he bowls predominantly in-swing to right-handers. He does not consider himself much of a batsman and at present is content to bat low in the order. His usual fielding positions are mid-off and fine leg.He feels that he owes most to his parents for his career. "They were always picking us up," he says. "My dad is always behind us’ if we have any problems, he will help us. I won’t say he’s a cricket fan himself but he is always there to help with our mental make-up." On the coaching side he pays tribute to Bill Flower.Cricket heroes: Andy Flower.Toughest opponents: So far, Hamilton Masakadza.Personal ambitions: "If everything goes well I would like to be in the Zimbabwe A side."Proudest achievement so far: When I received the Man of the Match playing first-league cricket for Old Georgians, when I took three for 11.Best friends in cricket: Innocent Chinyoka and my brother.Other qualifications: "I’m working to get my computer qualifications."Other sports: At school athletics, soccer, rugby, a bit of tennis.Outside interests: "I just enjoy hanging around with my friends."Views on cricket:

Everton must beat Tottenham to Tomiyasu

Everton don’t have a first-team manager in place but it would be foolish of Marcel Brands and co not to devise a list of potential transfer targets.

Their summer plans would have been drafted up a number of months ago but they are now in disarray after Carlo Ancelotti’s departure.

What’s the word?

One player Everton had asked for information about regarding a potential transfer was Takehiro Tomiyasu.

The Japanese centre-back currently plays for Bologna in Italy and has been a target for the Toffees over a number of months.

However, they are now facing staunch competition from another managerless club for his signature.

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham have entered talks with the Italian side in a bid to lure him to the Premier League.

Tomiyasu represents a bargain for a player of his qualities with £17m the asking price this summer.

Ball playing colossus

If Everton can bring in a new manager as quickly as possible, they must try and beat Spurs to the signing of the Japan international.

Tomiyasu is a modern-day centre-back combining a progressive and attractive ball-playing style with some classic ruthless defending.

For a Toffees side who lacked basic defensive nous in the final stages of last season, this could be incredibly beneficial.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

Mason Holgate was poor in the final months of the campaign, with his individual error leading to Ollie Watkins scoring when Aston Villa travelled to Goodison Park before the Englishman made a succession of mistakes in the 5-0 defeat to Manchester City.

A quick look at the stats tells you how Tomiyasu would be an upgrade on what the Toffees already have.

According to FB Ref, the 6 ft 2 defender is extremely competent in one on one duels. Per 90 minutes, Tomiyasu tackled 56.7% of players who attempted to dribble past him. By comparison, Holgate only tackled 40% of dribblers while Michael Keane was even worse at 35.3% per 90.

The Everton target applied more successful pressures of the ball per 90 (35.3%) than any other Toffees centre-back while he made more interceptions over the same metric (1.69).

Speaking about the defender’s potential, former Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni said: “He is a complete player and Bologna got a real bargain with Tomiyasu. He’s a good player and was compared to Maya Yoshida, who has been playing in Europe for a decade. He’s got the quality to be a real star.”

At the age of just 22, the centre-back has a bright future in the game. Brands just needs to ensure that’s in Merseyside, rather than north London.

AND in other news, Brands could seal huge Gomes upgrade at Everton by signing “world-class” £30m star…

Rangers set to sign John Lundstram

Journalist Alan Nixon has claimed that Glasgow Rangers will sign John Lundstram on a free transfer this week.

The Lowdown: Gers set to announce signing

Speaking upon the Gers’ return to pre-season training, Steven Gerrard revealed that the Ibrox outfit are close to agreeing a deal for an unnamed player.

The 55-time Scottish champions have been linked with Lundstram for a number of months after it emerged that he would be available as a free agent (via Glasgow Live).

The Latest: Nixon makes Lundstram reveal

Nixon was asked on Twitter by a Gers supporter: “Any idea who Rangers are apparently going to announce this week? Lundstram rumoured?”

His response was short but sweet, simply stating: It will be”.

The Verdict: Top deal

Although Sheffield United were relegated from the Premier League last season, Lundstram did well during his time amongst the elite. During the Blades’ first campaign back in the top flight in 2019/20, he scored five goals in 34 appearances as the Yorkshire side impressed (Transfermarkt). He didn’t match the same heights the following season, but he still did not let himself down.

The midfielder is valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt  and is just 27 years old – he is in his prime, which means the Gers would be getting a player seemingly on the top of his game. As they chase a spot in the group stages of the Champions League, the signing of players like Lundstram appears to bode well for their chances.

In other news, this man has been urged to leave Ibrox.
