Fulham should move for Steve Cooper

With recent reports suggesting that Scott Parker’s time as Fulham manager could be coming to an end in the next few days, there is one potential replacement for the 40-year-old who could carry on the former England international’s work at Craven Cottage.

According to a report by The Telegraph, the relationship between Parker and both Shahid and Tony Khan has rather considerably broken down following Fulham’s relegation to the Championship last season, with the club’s hierarchy having been in talks with the young manager regarding his position at the club this week.

As a result of these talks, it is expected that Parker will leave the club in the coming days, possibly by mutual consent, with the 40-year-old thought to be in the running to take over from Jonathan Woodgate at Fulham’s promotion rivals Bournemouth.

And, with the Cottagers looking increasingly likely to be on a hunt for a new manager of their own in the not so distant future, there is one standout candidate who could well be Parker’s perfect successor at Craven Cottage – Steve Cooper.

Cooper can continue Parker’s project

Following a season in which Graham Potter had led his Swansea City side to a 10th place finish in the 2018/19 Championship campaign, the appointment of a coach whose only previous experience in management had been with the Liverpool and England youth sides may not filled many of the Swansea fans with confidence.

However, the 41-year-old quickly put any doubt about his managerial capabilities to bed, with the Welsh side going on to enjoy a remarkable, and rather unexpected, season under the previously unknown coach – winning 18, drawing 16 and losing 12 of their 46 Championship fixtures in Cooper’s debut season, subsequently securing a sixth-place finish.

And, although the Swans would eventually lose 3-2 on aggregate to a much-fancied Brentford side in the play-off semi-finals, there were clear signs of improvement made by the club under their new manager – not only in league position but also tactically, with Swansea conceding just eight goals from set-pieces, down from 24 under Potter in the year prior.

The following season, Cooper defied expectations once again, with Swansea winning 23, drawing 11 and losing 12 of their 46 Championship fixtures, this time finishing the season in fourth place with 80 points – 10 more than the previous year.

Their performances in the play-offs also improved, defeating Barnsley 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-final, before – extremely unfortunately – meeting Thomas Frank’s Brentford once more in the final – a game that Swansea would ultimately lose 2-1.

Away from the pitch, Cooper has also gained a reputation for being extremely adept in developing young players – something no doubt helped by the fact the 41-year-old won the U17 World Cup with England – so much so that Premier League sides now offer Swansea the opportunity to loan their youth prospects before making them available to the wider market.

As such, it would very much appear as if the appointment of the man whom Andre Ayew dubbed a “quality” manager at Fulham would not only bring the very real chance of securing an immediate return to the Premier League, but also the potential of developing a young, exciting and attacking side that could well stay in the top flight for longer than Parker managed – leading us to believe that Cooper should very much be top of Khan’s shortlist this summer.

India win it all: 2nd test v Zimbabwe, Feroz Shah Kotla, New Delhi

An unusually crisp and cold March greeted the players from India and Zimbabwe in the capital city New Delhi where the second and final Test was to be played

Trishna Bose08-Mar-2002An unusually crisp and cold March greeted the players from India and Zimbabwe in the capital city New Delhi where the second and final Test was to be played. Down one-nil, the visitors had to win the match to square the series. The Feroz Shah Kotla wicket on first viewing looked like it was going to deteriorate and might not even last the five days. A batsman’s party track and the spinners could look forward to the turn that the pitch would provide as the days went by.Both sides made one change from the side that played in the city of oranges, Nagpur. Gavin Rennie made way for Dion Ebrahim for Zimbabwe and V V S Laxman was replaced by Virendra Sehwag for India. Stuart Carlisle won the all-important toss and elected to bat; Sourav Ganguly’s bad luck with tosses continued as he had to do what the opposition demandedZimbabwe did not have the ideal start as the two openers, captain Carlisle and Trevor Gripper, were dismissed cheaply. Zimbabwe were in deep trouble, and the tale of woe seemed to continue. The silver lining came in the form of young Dion Ebrahim, playing in his 12th Test, who played an innings of character, surpassing his personal best but unfortunately missing out on what would have been his first Test century by only 6 runs. Scoring your first Test century is a feeling that is indescribable. There is a sense of achievement, a sense of fulfillment and above all a sense of confidence. The other ray of hope was the positive in-touch Andy Flower who stroked the ball with immaculate touch. He inched his way to a much awaited century but fell eight short. One must admit that it was good to see Andy back in the limelight, after staying away in the shade for what seemed like a long time. The other star performance came from the dauntless and gutsy Travis Friend who battled almost alone to get his team to a respectable score. Eventually Zimbabwe were bowled out for 319.For India, Anil Kumble added three more wickets to his tally, and Zaheer Khan, Javagal Srinath and Harbhajan Singh pocketed two wickets each, showing a satisfactory all-round display in the bowling department.India started with a few hiccups, but seemed to settle down on a pitch that promised runs. Even though the star master – Tendulkar – could not score a large number, the captain Sourav Ganguly took the reins in his hand and got to his eighth Test century, but more importantly he broke the 28-month period where no hundreds were scored. The new sensation with the willow for India, the Tendulkaresque Virendra Sehwag, played a useful innings and helped India to get close to the Zimbabwean total. India were bowled out for 329.For the visitors, Heath Streak impressed on a wicket that was nowhere near ideal for pace, as he claimed four wickets, and spinner Ray Price bowled sensibly as he added three more to his tally.Zimbabwe failed to make a mark in the second innings as wickets fell like a pack of cards (for want of a better metaphor). The only performances worth mentioning were a 37 from the captain Carlisle and a gutsy 49 from Grant Flower. The spin twins for India ruled the day as they claimed all the wickets among themselves, with Harbhajan claiming six wickets and Anil Kumble adding four more to his ever increasing tally of Test wickets. The hosts were required to get a modest 122 to win the match and thereby the series. But the number 122 will ring loud for some of the team as a few years ago they lost a Test match to the West Indies, failing to get to the same total. They started on the wrong note, losing wickets cheaply, but one solid partnership saved the day for the hosts. They won the match by four wickets on paper, but the real winners were the Zimbabweans, who put up a gutsy fight right till the end. They deserved to win, but then that is cricket: you don’t always get what you deserve. The honours went to the Indians, but the visitors can take heart from the fact that, in the eyes of many cricket lovers, the sheer willingness to perform did wonders for the game. The Indian spin twins walked away with accolades, Harbhajan adjudged the man of the match and Anil Kumble the man of the series. That was curtains on the two-match Test series between India and Zimbabwe, with the hosts taking the final bow. With every series there are things to be learnt, and in this never-ending quest for knowledge, teams enhance their greatness. There will be another encounter, another place, another time and the game of cricket will continue to enthrall. One thing is for certain – the cricket show will go on!

Portsmouth table offer for Tucker

A major update has emerged on Gillingham centre-back Jack Tucker, regarding Portsmouth’s interest in his signature.

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, Portsmouth have tabled an opening bid for Gillingham centre-back Jack Tucker. In the printed edition of The Sun (20/06, p65), as transcribed by Football League World, it has been claimed that Portsmouth’s offer is worth £200k.

The report claims that Gillingham are not prepared to listen to offers in that region and are demanding £1m for the young centre-back this summer.

Last year, Gillingham boss Steve Evans claimed that Tucker has all the qualities he needs to be a quality player at centre-back. He told the Scottish Sun:

“Jack’s got everything.

“He’s been a little inconsistent lately after a lot of good publicity but I’ve seen that before with young players, the likes of Lewis Cook, now playing in the Premier League at Bournemouth, and Chris Wood who I signed for Leeds and is now scoring regularly at Burnley.

“Jack’s two footed, is good in the air and he’s a competitor. He’s got a bright future, make no mistake.

Cowley would love him

Pompey owner Michael Eisner needs to go back in with another offer for Tucker to make sure that he can bring him to Fratton Park this summer.

Jack Whatmough and Tom Naylor have both left the club to join League One rivals Wigan on free transfers, which has left a gaping hole in Danny Cowley’s Portsmouth squad ahead of next season. Eisner needs to add a centre-back or two to Cowley’s ranks and Tucker could be an ideal target for the club.

Tucker ticks multiple boxes for Portsmouth; he is young, has potential, is experienced in League One and has proven his quality at this level. In terms of his age, Tucker is only 21 and has plenty of years left ahead of him to develop as a player. Whilst £1m may seem steep at this stage, it could prove to be a bargain if Tucker is able to progress into a Championship or even Premier League standard player – with Evans admitting that he has a bright future ahead of him.

The central defender caught the eye in League One with some outstanding performances. He averaged an impressive WhoScored rating of 7.02 in 43 appearances for Gillingham in the season just gone.

For context, that is a higher score than both Whatmough and Naylor managed for Portsmouth and the same as Sean Raggett – who was ranked as Portsmouth’s second-best player overall. This is why Cowley would love to have Tucker at Fratton Park; he is a quality young centre-back who could be a great addition in the short and long term for Portsmouth.

Imagine him & Ndombele: Spurs eye Aouar

Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Houssem Aouar this summer…

What’s the word?

That’s according to The Mirror, who claimed that the north London outfit are looking to add creativity to their midfield before next season, and the 22-year-old maestro is on new sporting director Fabio Paratici’s list of targets.

They’ll have to battle their arch-rivals Arsenal for his signature, though, and they have held an interest in the Lyon star for a while, having tried to sign him last summer.

He has two years to run on his current contract but the Ligue 1 outfit are ready to cash in due to the financial impact of the pandemic. As a result, Aouar could be available for as little as £20m.

Imagine him and Ndombele

The France international would certainly be an interesting candidate to fill Spurs’ creative void and it would be even better to pip the Gunners to his signature.

They have lacked a midfielder capable of feeding Harry Kane and Heung-min Son ever since Christian Eriksen swapped the English capital for Milan.

Aouar recorded eight goals and four assists across all competitions last season, via Transfermarkt, which was more than any of Spurs’ current central options combined.

Smarter Scout have previously described the £36m-rated dynamo as a “prolific dribbler,” “skilful” and a “very good finisher”, and that’s not just backed up by his goal returns but also by his averages of 2.3 shots, 1.5 dribbles and 1.3 key passes per league game last term.

By comparison, Tottenham’s most creative player was Son (two key passes per game), whilst Kane (1.4) is the only other player to exceed the Lyon playmaker’s numbers in that respect, as per WhoScored. It clearly shows that the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli are underachieving right now.

However, it is Aouar’s fellow Frenchman who could benefit most from his arrival in N17 as the pair were a force to be reckoned with at Lyon. Across 85 matches together, the duo combined for 18 goals and 30 assists, with the current Spurs beast playing a little deeper behind the 5 foot 9 gem, as per Transfermarkt.

Aouar, who has been lauded as an “exceptional talent” and “special” in the past, would evidently be a huge improvement for whoever takes the reins in the dugout next season.

For just £20m, Spurs would be crazy to not pull the trigger this summer.
