Steve Magoffin02-Feb-2001An amazing, unbroken, seventh wicket partnership of fifty-five runs between Jimmy Maher (52*) and Andy Bichel (40*) has seen Queensland scramble home in a Mercantile Mutual Cup thriller against the Tasmanian Tigers here at the ‘Gabba ground in Brisbane tonight. The Bulls’ win came after a fluctuating contest in which the advantage tilted from one side to the other around a series of annoying stoppages for rain.In a game in which batting was made treacherous as the result of days of heavy rain in Brisbane, the Tasmanians were held to a moderate 8/134 from thirty-nine overs after being invited to bat by rival captain Stuart Law. It looked to have given the home team a decisive advantage by the time it began its chase. But the complexion of the match changed several times during the evening, particularly after the Queenslanders crashed to scorelines of 3/2 and 7/67 at different moments. The Bulls opted to take into the evening session a reshuffled batting line-up but the strategy proved far from successful. Regular opener Matt Hayden (16) was joined by wicketkeeper Wade Seccombe (0) at the outset but the wicketkeeper-batsman was dismissed from the third ball of the second over for a duck. Lee Carseldine (0) then joined Hayden and immediately headed back to the dressing room given out lbw without playing a shot. Queensland was suddenly reeling at 2-0, the tight medium pace of Shaun Young (3/16 from six overs) having accounted for both wickets. Late inclusion Clinton Perren (0) joined Hayden but, on the other side of a short rain delay, edged a ball to the waiting slips cordon and incredibly became the third player to be sent back to the pavilion without a run against his name. The regular opening pairing of Hayden and Maher finally restored some sanity to the innings with a defiant stand of forty-three before the former was run out. More handy runs were added to the total by Maher and Law (11) before a series of bowling changes turned things back Tasmania’s way again. Medium pacer Scott Kremerskothen (1/33 from five overs) continued his reign as the competition’s leading wicket taker by snaring the prize scalp of Law in the seventeenth over.Debutant Brendan Nash (1) then became yet another of the match’s run out victims as he set about trying to inspire the acceleration in the run scoring that the Bulls required by this stage to overhaul the revised target of 119 off twenty-eight overs. He pushed a little too hard as it turned out, trying to take a risky second run to Young at fine leg following a misfield. When James Hopes (0) fell lbw to Adam Polkinghorne (1/22 off four overs) only minutes later, the Tasmanians looked to have the game – one crucial to their Mercantile Mutual Cup hopes – in the bag.Yet, with Maher still at the crease and the hard-hitting Bichel joining him, the Bulls were about to inspire another twist. Maher reverted to the role of anchoring as Bichel launched a sizzling attacking spree, charging bowlers, spraying shots around the ground liberally, and even nearly claiming the jackpot of $210,000 for hitting the advertising signs at long off. In the twinkling of an eye, he combined with Maher to bring the game back under the control of the Bulls, and chalked up the winning runs with a hit to third man with some ten deliveries still remaining.Maher’s innings – which helped in no small measure to break the Bulls’ sapping one-day losing streak – was also a beauty and ended in a fitting display of emotion when he embraced Bichel enthusiastically at the conclusion of the game.Earlier, Bulls’ paceman Michael Kasprowicz (3/22 off eight overs) made a welcome return to form as he helped put the skids under the Tasmanian top and middle order. Around a defiant innings from former Queensland Colts captain Shane Watson (28*), the Tigers were never really able to engender significant momentum into their display with the bat. In the end, the visitors’ inability to mount one or two sizeable partnerships proved crucial.

Boro won’t sell Dael Fry to Southampton

A major update has emerged on Dael Fry which could lead to Southampton CEO Martin Semmens missing out on a deal for the defender.

What’s the talk?

According to The Northern Echo, Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson is adamant that he will not entertain any offers for the centre-back this summer. Gibson is keen to give Neil Warnock the best squad possible heading into next season and is not prepared to cash in on Fry, who has been linked with various clubs.

This comes after Football League World reported earlier this week that Southampton, Brentford, Leeds, Wolves and Burnley are all interested in the 23-year-old. Brentford are reportedly preparing an offer for the defender, whilst the other four clubs are said to have scouted him during the 2020/21 season.

Former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka claimed that Fry “has everything” and that he likes to learn and improve as a player. The Spaniard told Middlesbrough’s official website: “He likes to learn. He trains with us sometimes and he’s improving every single day. He goes with the national team and is the best, he scores goals.

“I’m really pleased because he deserves it and he can be an important part in the future of this club. He could be an amazing player because he has everything.” Fans will be gutted

Southampton fans must be gutted if this update means that Semmens will not be able to strike a deal for Fry this summer. There is not much the Saints will be able to do if Boro are sticking to their stance and will not listen to any offers for the defender.

Perhaps the Championship club could be tempted into doing a deal if the 23-year-old becomes unsettled and hands in a transfer request, but there has been no suggestion that he is likely to do so at this point.

Fry could have been an exceptional addition to Southampton’s squad, which is why fans may be gutted that a move for the centre-back now appears unlikely. He averaged a superb SofaScore rating of 6.95 across 32 Championship appearances last term, showing off his consistency and quality at that level.

He won an impressive 65% of his aerial duels and 63% of ground duels, which highlights how dominant he was against attackers in the second tier and why he could be ready for the step up to the Premier League.

The £5,500-per-week defender could have come in and challenged Jannik Vestergaard, Mohamed Salisu and Jan Bednarek for a starting spot and increased the competition for places in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad. At the age of 23, Fry also has potential to improve and could have become a key player for Saints for years to come.

Instead, the south coast club will now need to look at alternative options in the market to bolster their defensive ranks heading into next season.

Shaiza-inspired Pakistan surpass Dutch women by two wickets

Shaiza Khan, the Pakistan captain, gave a magnificent all-round performance to lead Pakistan women to yet another close victory against the visiting Netherlands

Mahmood Ahmad12-Apr-2001Shaiza Khan, the Pakistan captain, gave a magnificent all-round performance to lead Pakistan women to yet another close victory against the visiting Netherlands. After claiming four wickets with her leg breaks, she scored a valuable 30 with the bat to help her side reach the 167-run target for the loss of eight wickets.Coming to the crease after Pakistan had lost six wickets for 97, Shaiza applied herself to the task as she added 49 for the eighth wicket with Batool Fatima to see her side through. She was the eighth woman out for Pakistan at the score of 165. However, she had done the damage by then. The heroics by Shaiza apart, Pakistan owed their success to an excellent 55-run opening partnership between Zehmurad Afzal (20 off 43 balls) and Rabia Khan (21 off 59 balls). These two played with command and authority, defying the variable Dutch attack for as many as 15 overs.Another factor which led to Pakistan’s success was the number of extras given away by the Dutch bowlers. After a wayward performance in the first two matches, they bowled another 59 wides in a total of 63 extras, thus doing great damage to their cause.Earlier, the Dutch openers, Koster and Tanke, started confidently, producing the highest partnership so far of the series. They played shots to all parts of the ground, adding 66 in about 19 overs. Both got 34; however, Koster was more aggressive than her partner taking 57 balls (5 fours) to score her runs against her partner’s 99 balls. After the dismissal of Kostner at 66, Tanke continued undeterred, adding 30 for the second wicket with skipper Pauline te Beest (19 off 23 balls, 2 fours) and 13 for the third wicket with Salomons (ten off 12 balls, 1 four). However, the fall of Tanke’s wicket at 109 triggered a collapse in which seven wickets fell for the addition of just 30 runs, reducing the visitors to 139 for nine by the end of the 43rd over.It was up to the last-wicket pair of van Leeuwen and Molenaarto bring a much-needed respectability to the score. Batting with command and authority, especially against the Pakistan pace attack, they gathered a valuable 27 runs for the last wicket before Molenaar was caught by Rabia Khan off Khursheed Jabeen for 11. Van Leeuwen remained unbeaten on 15 (24 balls) which contained one four. The Pakistan skipper Shaiza Khan proved their main destroyer as she produced yet another remarkable display of leg spin bowling. After taking a five-wicket haul only yesterday, she got another bag of four wickets for 33 in her ten overs.Shaiza was ably supported by the 12-year-old Sajjida Shah. After displaying her batting skills in the previous two matches, being declared player of the match in the first one-dayer, she surprised everyone with her magnificent skill of off break bowling.Bowling with a lot of flight she accounted for four Dutch batswomen, giving away a mere 22 in her quota of ten overs. Khursheed Jabeen and Kiran Baluch took one wicket each for 24 and 37 runs respectively.Shaiza Khan was duly acknowledged for her match-winning performance by being declared the player of the match.Pakistan now lead the seven-match series three-nil. The fourth match will be played on Saturday, 14 April.

Inevitable draw in Christchurch but both teams delighted with individual efforts

Saqlain Mushtaq has had a tour to remember after today scoring, as expected, his maiden Test century for Pakistan but his complete scenario for the final day of the second National Bank series Test did not eventuate

Lynn McConnell19-Mar-2001Saqlain Mushtaq has had a tour to remember after today scoring, as expected, his maiden Test century for Pakistan but his complete scenario for the final day of the second National Bank series Test did not eventuate.Under his plan for the day he would firstly score his century then he would find the Jade Stadium pitch ready to accept enough of his off spin to lead his side to a second victory in the series.Unfortunately only the first part came true.Pakistan, courtesy of Saqlain scoring the two runs for his century, managed 10 more runs in the last 25 minutes of their innings to give his side a 95-run first innings advantage over New Zealand.Only Waqar Younis managed to get out before the Pakistan declaration was applied. He was caught off his gloves from the bowling of Daryl Tuffey for 12 runs.Pakistan captain Moin Khan was delighted with the way his side chased, and passed, a big target of 476 and the effort of Inzamam-ul-Haq (130), Yousuf Youhana (203) and Saqlain Mushtaq (100 not out) had been tremendous.”There was a possibility we could have won the match if we got a lead and then bowled New Zealand out but there wasn’t anything in the pitch. It wasn’t seaming, swinging or even spinning. It wasn’t a good pitch for bowling,” he said.Moin said Pakistan would continue to be positive in their cricket in the third Test and would not be sitting on their 1-0 lead in the series.Once New Zealand began their second innings, openers Matthew Bell and Mark Richardson managed their third successive half century opening stand, not a big deal for most countries but one that was of considerable comfort to New Zealand who have struggled for an opening partnership.Bell was out on 69, trapped leg before wicket to the part-time leg spin bowling of Younis Khan for 40.But Mathew Sinclair joined Mark Richardson and they took the score through to 196/1.In that time, Richardson scored his sixth half century in eight Test matches, his 50 coming up 215 minutes off 170 balls and including eight fours. When New Zealand declared 101 runs in front, he was unbeaten on 73 while Sinclair was also unbeaten on 50 scored in 169 minutes off 145 balls.Sinclair ended the game with 254 runs and was not out. His Test average is now a healthy 52.55 while Richardson’s average is 50.33.New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming said it was on the fourth afternoon when the Kiwis thought they couldn’t win the Test. But he was delighted with the performance of Sinclair and his new opening pair of Richardson and Bell.”Mathew Sinclair was outstanding while the opening pair has been a problem in the past and as a middle-order batsman that’s great to see.”When you look at the work ethic the two players use to prepare themselves, they lead from the front. Matthew Bell’s return has been very good,” he said.Fleming thought his selection as Wellington’s captain this year had been a factor in that development.New Zealand’s middle-order hadn’t been used to getting good starts but when they happened it allowed them to bat in a more positive style while also had the effect of leaving the bowlers more drained than if they had picked up cheap wickets.Fleming didn’t think there would be a result because both teams lacked the penetration to force the win on the flat pitch provided.

Fonseca eye Pellegrini for Spurs

According to La Republicca, Paulo Fonseca will look to sign Lorenzo Pellegrini if he is named the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Fonseca on verge of move to Spurs

As per The Guardian, Spurs are in advanced talks with Portuguese Fonseca to replace Jose Mourinho as their new boss.

Fonseca, who used to manage AS Roma, could therefore raid his former club for new players, with this latest report claiming Gianluca Mancini and Pellegrini will both be on his radar.

The Latest: Spurs eye Pellegrini

The report has suggested Fonseca could move for Pellegrini if he secures his ‘dream’ move to Spurs.

However, the outlet also believes the Italy international would be an ‘almost’ unattainable target – but there is a small chance Spurs could capture his services.

The Verdict: Top target

Pellegrini, who is the club captain at the Rome-based outfit, has grown into an important player for both club and country.

Last term, he made 47 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals and providing 10 assists (Transfermarkt).

Francesco Totti, the Roma club legend, even called the 24-year-old “phenomenal” (dbasia.news).

Pellegrini is valued at £36m (Transfermarkt), and given Roma’s apparent desire to keep him, he could cost an awful lot more. Gonzalo Villar and Mancini are also said to be targets for Fonseca, but the capture of Pellegrini would send a real statement.

It remains to be seen, firstly, whether Fonseca does indeed join Spurs and, if he does, whether he can convince the midfielder to move to north London.

In other news, Tottenham eye this Juventus ace.

High cricketing standards in Ranji quarter-finals

It was a good move by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)to postpone the start of the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals by two daysin order to give leading players the opportunity to play for theirstates in the crucial games

Partab Ramchand13-Feb-2002It was a good move by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)to postpone the start of the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals by two daysin order to give leading players the opportunity to play for theirstates in the crucial games. So often in the recent past have theRanji Trophy knock-out matches been played without the nationalplayers that the country’s premier national competition has beendevalued and the fare dished out has, predictably enough, beenmediocre. There is no doubt that the participation of players likeSourav Ganguly, Dinesh Mongia, VVS Laxman, Sanjay Bangar, Zaheer Khan,Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Deep Dasgupta, Jacob Martin and ConnorWilliams raised the level of the contests, and there was much goodcricket in the four matches. The quarter-finals were not devoid of surprises, and the most emphaticone was the manner in which Baroda scythed through Hyderabad. Grantedthat Baroda are the defending champions and they had the homeadvantage, but not even their most ardent supporters would haveexpected them to win by an innings and 256 runs just 12 overs into thefourth morning. After all, Hyderabad had done well in the leaguestages, registering a comfortable 10-wicket win over Himachal Pradeshin the pre-quarter-finals and having India caps Laxman andVenkatapathy Raju supplemented by in-form players like Daniel Manoharand A Nandakishore in their ranks.
Jacob Martin
© AFPBut, having tasted success last year, Baroda are no more the diffidentteam under the shadow of Bombay and Maharashtra that they were forlong. Zaheer Khan produced a dream spell in the second innings thatbacked up some admirable batting feats from Williams (157) and Martin(271). At the moment, then, it must be said that Baroda look goodenough to take the title for a second year running.Baroda’s semifinal opponents Punjab were always expected to get thebetter of Orissa, especially with the match being played at Mohali. The presence of Shiv Sundar Das and Debasis Mohanty had much to dowith this eastern state making the semifinals for the first time lastyear. The two were around this year too, but Punjab were a superiorall-round side. With Ravneet Ricky, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh,Pankaj Dharmani and Dinesh Mongia in their ranks, they never let slipthe slim advantage that the two-run first innings lead gave them, andpurposeful batting and incisive bowling saw them complete an emphatic243-run victory that should do a world of good for their confidenceagainst Baroda.
Sanjay Bangar
© CricInfoOn the face of it, Railways defeating Tamil Nadu by eight wicketswould also seem to be a surprise. But on closer scrutiny, it cannotaccurately be termed as such. Railways, after finishing runners-uplast year, are a very different team. Their confidence is at an alltime high, and the side today is very different from the one that lostthree times successively to Tamil Nadu – in 1972-73, four years later, and then in the title clash in 1987-88. Of course, they are also amuch stronger side now, with Sanjay Bangar, Murali Kartik andHarvinder Singh, besides the in-form JP Yadav and the evergreen YereGoud in their ranks. They bat well down the order and have a wellbalanced attack. The manner in which Bangar (212) held the inningstogether was exemplary and, riding on such feats, Railways must fancytheir chances against Bengal. For Tamil Nadu, it was a match to forgetin a hurry, with both the batsmen and bowlers failing to come goodwhen it mattered the most.In making the semifinals for the first time since 1993-94, two-timechampions Bengal put up a commendable show in prevailing over Gujaraton the back of a slender first-innings lead. Only 32 runs separatedthe teams after the first innings, and there was time for Gujarat tocome back into the game. But the manner in which Bengal shut them outof the match by splendid batting in the second innings was admirable. And while the established stars like Deep Dasgupta, Rohan Gavaskar,Devang Gandhi and Sourav Ganguly did their job, it was theperformances of Subhomoy Das (77 and 107) and Sanjib Sanyal (123 and92) that played a vital role in Bengal’s victory. The two semifinals promise to be engrossing affairs, and with all theleading players taking part, the high standard of play is bound to bemaintained.
