Após o revés de 2 a 0 para o Coritiba, no Couto Pereira, na noite do último domingo, a distância do Atlético-MG, agora quarto colocado com 60 pontos, para o líder Palmeiras, pulou para os dez pontos. Faltando doze em disputa, o título fica praticamente impossível.

A derrota para os paranaenses fez Marcelo Oliveira mudar o discurso e admitir que o Galo não briga mais pelo título. E ele mesmo encontrou uma razão para isso: o início ruim no campeonato. O mandatário lembrou que, nos oito primeiros jogos, o alvinegro somou apenas sete pontos.

-O motivo ficou dentro dos primeiros jogos. Da décima rodada para frente, o aproveitamento é alto. Estaríamos até à frente do Palmeiras – hoje, não mais. Um dos desafios que temos é não levar tantos gols. A gente faz muitos gols e cria muito, mas não consegue criar uma estratégia fora de casa. O time ataca muito e, às vezes, deixa espaço. Temos que pegar esse final de Brasileiro, pontuar, tentar ganhar em casa do Palmeiras, já que ganhamos fora, para chegar entre os primeiros e brigar pelo título da copa do Brasil-disse.

Por fim, o comandante pediu que os jogadores contornem o desgaste de final da temporada.

-Vai ser assim contra o Grêmio, em Belo Horizonte e em Porto Alegre, também. Temos que entender que campeonato de pontos corridos é assim. A nossa conversa será nesse sentido. É um time desgastado no momento. É normal para quem joga duas competições. Mas isso não pode explicar a apatia do jogo contra o Coritiba- finalizou.

Frank McAvennie believes Glasgow Rangers should expect more shocks in the future following their defeat to St. Johnstone.

The Gers were dumped out of the Scottish Cup quarter-finals as they were defeated on penalties by the Saints after a 1-1 draw.

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie suggested the Ibrox outfit should get used to such losses because being champions prompts the best from opposition teams. He said:

“The biggest problem Rangers have is that they’re the champions.

“People stand up to them, they fight more. It’s not happened with Celtic this season because they’ve not been scared of them. 

“I don’t think Rangers underestimated St Johnstone and I wouldn’t say they were disrespectful either. 

“They thought they had the game won and took their foot off the gas, they didn’t mark the goalkeeper because they didn’t think he’d do anything. 

“Look what happened there. There was some naivety there, that’s what it was. When you’re champions, everyone wants to knock you off your pedestal. It will probably happen again.”

In Rangers’ hands

Of course, the Gers are now an even bigger scalp than they were before. That comes with the territory of being the Premiership champions, and Steven Gerrard will not be complaining. However, the Gers have proven in the league that they are more than a match for every other side – they remain unbeaten in that competition (BBC).

The defeats to St. Johnstone and St. Mirren – they were beaten by the Buddies 3-2 in the Scottish League Cup – were disappointing, especially given how comfortable Rangers have been in the Premiership. Of course, teams will want to beat the Gers, but that does not mean they need to get used to losing. What kind of message would that send? The 55-time Scottish champions play to win every match – a couple of poor defeats will not change that.

Aston Villa announced ticketing arrangements for the return of supporters to Villa Park on social media on Wednesday morning.

And, as to be expected, plenty of Villa fans shared their excitement at the news online.

Fans wanting to attend Villa’s final game of the season against Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side on May 23 will have had to be a 2019/20 season ticket holder.

The club confirmed that those eligible would need to register into a ballot process, with up to 10,000 fans set to return to Villa Park in a matter of weeks.

Villa’s last game on home soil with fans in attendance came against Tottenham back in February 2020, with Dean Smith’s side suffering late heartbreak that afternoon.

It’s not long until supporters will be back in attendance, though, and plenty of fans made their feelings known following the club’s official Twitter post.

Com a possibilidade de Diogo ser titular na quarta, quem também comemora o retorno do lateral/meia é o seu “antigo” concorrente, Victor Luís. Antigo porque, com Jair, Diogo tem atuado mais como meia, sem ser na lateral-esquerda. Até por isso, surgiu a dupla entre os dois laterais, que tem dado muito certo, como destacou Victor Luís em coletiva em General Severiano, neste sábado.

-Com certeza, quero seguir jogando. Com a volta do Diogo, o time não perde nada. Só acrescenta por conta da ofensividade dele. Isso facilita muito. O Sidão até brincou, pelo fato de os dois serem laterais, um procura o outro. Temos entrosamento e espero que possamos fazer grandes jogos juntos – analisa.

A última vez que os dois iniciaram um jogo juntos foi na vitória por 2 a 0 contra o Corinthians, na Arena da Ilha. Na ocasião, Diogo marcou um dos gols, em lance exatamente pelo lado esquerdo do campo. Para voltar a balançar as redes – dois jogos em branco – Jair deve promover a volta do jogador na quarta.

Newcastle have suffered a blow before their Premier League clash against Leicester City, with Steve Bruce revealing that 18-year-old Elliot Anderson is set to miss out.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against the Foxes, the Newcastle manager said: “He picked up a knock in the last game he played and it’s set him back a little bit. We’re not sure how bad it is but it’s a hip problem. He’s going to be struggling for the next couple of weeks.

“We’re delighted with his progress – he’s only 18 – and he’s got a big future, we hope, as long as he keeps his head down and keeps working well. But, as I said, he’ll be struggling a bit for the next couple of weeks I would have thought.”

The news came just after Bruce had admitted that Anderson had a good chance of featuring for the first team in the Premier League before the end of the season, saying: “There’s a chance. We understand that he’s making big strides. And he’s only 18, the boy, but he’s in and around us. Yeah, he might get a chance before the end of the season. I’ll look at it, and what we’ve got. We’ve got our big players fit at the top of the pitch, of course, in Allan, Callum and Joelinton. He’s got fierce competition.”

Anderson has played just three minutes of top-flight football all season, coming on in the closing stages of the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal back in mid-January. The lack of game-time for the talented teenager has led to plenty of Newcastle fans on different occasions calling for Bruce to bring him into the first team fold, but that has fallen on deaf ears.

Just recently, Magpies supporters voiced their anger at seeing him fail to even make the matchday squad against West Brom, while after he made his debut for England’s under-19s, they urged Bruce to unleash him in the Premier League.

Anderson has already earned rave reviews for his ability and potential, with his former youth coach John Forrest telling The Athletic: “He knew how to dominate a game, which is a natural skill that’s hard to coach. He really was an outstanding footballer. He stood out, even then.”

In fact, several of his former Magpies academy team-mates said he was the “most talented player” in the team, and that he was also “supremely driven”.

Tottenham Hotspur are among the teams keeping tabs on prolific goalscorer Cyle Larin ahead of the summer transfer window.

That’s according to 90min, who claim the Besiktas forward is attracting interest from across Europe as he will soon enter the final 12 months of his current contract.

It appears that the Lilywhites are on the lookout for another striking addition ahead of next season, with doubts over Harry Kane’s future and the on-loan Carlos Vinicius set to return to Benfica.

Larin could be a bargain replacement for the Brazilian, and his versatile ability to play through the middle and out wide, makes him even more appealing heading into what will be a difficult window to negotiate.

The 33-time Canada international has bagged a whopping 23 goals this season, helping steer the Turkish Super Lig outfit to another title, and that has taken his total tally to 84 goals in 191 career appearances, as per Transfermarkt.

His performances in the MLS for Orlando City caught the keen eye of Brazil legend Kaka.

“I think Cyle can go far,” Kaka said at an MLS media day, via Goal.com. “Cyle is a very good player and the third season for us will be great, but I think Cyle can play in a big team in Europe as well.”

And it’s not the first time that someone has waxed lyrical about the 26-year-old’s sensational attacking ability.

Back in March, Canadian national team coach John Herdman lauded Larin after a hat-trick against Bermuda, he told reporters (via Sporx): “Cyle Larin is a predator. He has this ability, that’s why we recruited him.”

If Spurs want to keep hold of Vinicius, who has enjoyed respectable returns playing a bit-part role behind Kane with ten goals, they will have to fork out an eye-watering £40m which is an extortionate amount for a backup.

But at least with Larin, you’ve got the option to play him out wide, so he should see more game time on the pitch than the Benfica man. The 6 foot 2 beast is also only valued at £8.1m, so you’d imagine that Levy could drive up a bargain with the player in the final year of his contract.

AND in other news, Spurs can solve major issue with 6 ft 3 “complete player”, he won’t cost Levy a penny…

O Santos está decidido a negociar com o colombiano Orlando Berrío e com o venezuelano Alejandro Guerra para a próxima temporada, ambos do Atlético Nacional (COL). Para isso, o clube envia na próxima segunda-feira o agente Luiz Taveira para tratar diretamente do assunto.

Taveira é o representante com melhor trânsito pela Vila Belmiro, responsável por negociações recentes com Jonathan Copete, Fábian Noguera, Maxi Rolón e Rodrigão. A partir de segunda, o empresário viaja à Colômbia e não tem prazo para voltar com os reforços.

No entanto, a saga pela dupla do Atlético já era para ter iniciado na semana passada. O agente não encontrou reserva de hotéis disponíveis em Medellín por conta do show da banda americana Guns N’ Roses no país. Toda rede hoteleira estava ocupada e com preços inflacionados.

Agora com hospedagem garantida, o Santos dará início às negociações de fato. A princípio, o Atlético exige 3,5 milhões de dólares (cerca de R$12 milhões) por Berrío e mais 2 milhões (cerca de R$ 7 milhões) pelo meia Guerra. Com pouco dinheiro em caixa, a ideia da diretoria e do agente é forçar os colombianos a diminuírem a pedida para fechar negócio.

Contudo, a tarefa não é das mais fáceis. Envolvido com a disputa do Mundial de Clubes em dezembro, o Atlético Nacional reluta em fechar acordos antes da disputa do torneio intercontinental, ainda mais quando envolve “pechincha” em relação a valores pré-definidos.

Além disso, o venezuelano Guerra, de 31 anos, já tem acordo encaminhado com o rival Palmeiras. Prioridade do Peixe desde a janela de transferências do meio do ano, Guerra é o nome mais forte na cúpula alvinegra para reforçar o clube para a Libertadores de 2017.
