Even though Greg Taylor is certainly one of the players for the future, the 22-year-old full-back has been criticised quite a lot as of late due to his underwhelming performances.

Of course, this might be a bit too harsh on a player that young but Frank McAvennie, a Celtic icon himself, seems to believe he’s struggling because he’s not being pushed enough.

Here’s what he said exclusively for Football Insider: “Celtic like to play free and open football but sometimes I see him by Edouard and I think, ‘Really?’ I like free-flowing football as a centre-forward but I never played with defenders who came past the strikers. Sometimes you have got to hold, I know he has energy and wants a goal but first and foremost you are a defender. Take a leaf out of Kieran Tierney’s book.

“Taylor is still young but he does not have anyone to push him. Barry Douglas would give him competition. That is what it is all about, getting pushed. When Patrick Roberts came in, my god, all of a sudden Forrest was one of the best players on the park. Psychologically when somebody comes in you get a wee kick up the backside and maybe he needs that to step up a gear.”

Essentially, McAvennie believes that by adding Leeds United’s Barry Douglas into the mix, Taylor would suddenly get a slight push and be more motivated to improve.

At the moment, he seems too comfortable and that’s impacting his performances. Douglas, of course, has previously been linked with a move to the Scottish Premier League as Neil Lennon wanted to bolster his defensive line.

Of course, with 30 years already on his back and him entering the final year of his deal at Elland Road, Douglas could be available at bargain price as well.

Verdict

Going for Douglas does seem like a win-win scenario for Celtic. Not only would they get an experienced defender for the short-term project but would also have someone to push Taylor to improve for the future.

For that reason, McAvennie’s advice seems quite solid.

What’s the word?

According to France Football, the Midlands outfit have entered the race to sign relegated Watford star Ismaila Sarr and have an advantage over Liverpool in the fact that they can offer him a starting spot.

They claim that the Senegalese winger is available for between €35m (£32m) and €40m (£36.5m) and that his wages could exceed €6m-per-year (£5.5m-per-year), which is around £115k-per-week.

The 22-year-old has not been named in any of the Hornets’ opening four matches across the Championship and EFL Cup.

Speedy threat

Sarr was one of Watford’s few bright sparks during their relegation campaign last year, providing six goals and six assists, per Transfermarkt.

The tricky winger averaged 1.7 dribbles, 1.6 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.6 crosses per game, via WhoScored.

Perhaps it’s no surprise to see Dean Smith interested after Sarr ran riot against his Villa outfit back in December. He scored one goal from a total of five shots and also recorded one key pass, one dribble and won ten duels – Matt Targett was terrorised all afternoon.

In the return fixture, he was absent and Villa clinched the victory – coincidence?

Given his nationality and position, Sarr has drawn comparisons to Liverpool’s Sadio Mane with him even describing the Watford star as “very rapid.”

His former teammate Abdoulaye Doucoure, now an Everton player, has previously waxed lyrical about his potential, he said: “I’ve told him as a joke that he’s a Champions League player, but I really think it’s because I know he has exceptional qualities. He’s not just quick, he’s incredible at finishing, he can find space, keep the ball and I hope he’ll go very far.”

Sarr outperformed both Trezeguet and Anwar El Ghazi for goal contributions as well as dribbles per game. He’d certainly be an upgrade – a huge one at that.

New Southampton signing Ibrahima Diallo is ready to make his mark on Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side after his inspired comments ahead of his Saints debut. The 21-year-old will be fighting for a spot in the squad over usual choice Oriol Romeu, but he believes he’s up for taking on the challenge.

Speaking to French outlet L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), Diallo expressed his determination ahead of an exciting new chapter in his career.

“I didn’t make a choice foolishly out of emotion. I’ve thought about it for a long time and whatever happens, I know I won’t regret it,” the midfielder said. “If I didn’t feel ready, I wouldn’t have made that choice. Of course I feel ready, I am determined to face this challenge.”

Friendly competition for the Hasenhuttl nod

After losing key player Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, the Saints were looking to recruit someone who would do a solid job of replacing him. After being linked to both Diallo and Liverpool’s Marko Grujic, Southampton struck a deal for the former Brest man, who joins on a four-year deal.

Diallo may edge Romeu out of the team as he brings with him some impressive statistics. According to WhoScored last season, the Frenchman tallied a higher passing percentage (86%) to the Spaniard’s 80.7%. Romeu was also outperformed by the new Saints signing in terms of tackles made and how many times the players were dribbled past each game.

Diallo made two tackles per match and was dribbled past 0.9 times on average, compared to Romeu’s 1.8 tackles and 1.6 times dribbled past per 90 minutes.

It will be a tough decision for Hasenhuttl to make as Southampton look to climb the table this season. Diallo’s youth and hunger to play could bring a refreshing change of dynamic to the midfield, but 29-year-old Romeu hasn’t missed a single game this season and has netted a goal already as well (via Transfermarkt).

Perhaps the Austrian can find room for both, but it may take a lot of trial and error as Hasenhuttl experiments with his new personnel.
