Man Utd fans react to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s injury update on key duo

After slipping to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth last weekend, Manchester United were in desperate need of bouncing back in style.

And on Thursday night, the Red Devils did exactly that with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer went in with a surprisingly strong side for the clash, and he was duly rewarded, with goals from first-team stars like Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

But, as is always the case with such team selections, you run the risk of potentially picking up one or two injuries that you could have avoided had you decided to rotate more heavily.

Speaking after the game, Solskjaer admitted both Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire had picked up knocks during the clash against the Serbian side. The Norwegian revealed the latter should be fine for the game against Brighton on Sunday, but delivered a more worrying assessment of his midfielder, saying he is “more of a concern”.

After hearing the injury update on the duo, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on Solskjaer’s handling of the matter.

Many supporters of the Manchester side slammed the Red Devils boss for his role in the pair potentially being ruled out of Sunday’s game, and insisted it is something he could have completely avoided.

Liverpool fans react to Jurgen Klopp’s verdict on Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson

A selection of Liverpool fans have been reacting on social media after Jurgen Klopp praised Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson for their offensive contributions, as he shared his assessment of the full-backs.

The pair are joint with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino for the most assists in the Premier League by a Liverpool player this season with three, while Alexander-Arnold ranks top for minutes between key passes with one every 24.8.

Only Kevin De Bruyne at 19.7 minutes, Robbie Brady at 22, Callum Hudson-Odoi at 22.2, Marc Albrighton and Riyad Mahrez at 22.9 are averaging a faster rate of key passes in the Premier League this term from players to have featured for more than 100 minutes.

Alexander-Arnold also ranks second for big chances created in the top-flight with nine to De Bruyne’s eleven, and has delivered the second-most accurate crosses with 29 to the Manchester City midfielder’s 30.

Robertson, meanwhile, has delivered 12 accurate crosses and created four big chances so far this season.

The Reds full-backs’ form is nothing new either, as they set a Premier League record last term as the first two defenders from the same team to ever record double figures for assists in the same campaign.

Klopp could not help himself but to praise the duo as he spoke to the assembled media ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester City, as he delivered a glowing verdict of their efforts.

“Modern football is like this, that you have to be really strong on the wings, however you do it, because the goal is in the centre of the pitch and the area around the goal is the most crowded area,” he said, via quotes by the official Liverpool website. “So you have to find a way to go through – that’s in behind, you pass it on the wings or you try to find little spaces between their lines. That’s how football is.

“The wider you make the pitch, the bigger the spaces in the centre. That’s why we try, you have to be a force from pretty much everywhere. We try to use the skills of the two boys – good crosses, speed, very lively, very brave and very fit endurance-wise, so they can do the defensive transition as well.

“They are pretty good players, so they’ve done well so far.”

Here are some of the messages shared from supporters reacting to Klopp’s comments…

Newcastle fans are growing tired of listening to Rafa Benitez speak about the club

Rafa Benitez has spoken recently about his wish to return to England as well as how his successor Steve Bruce is getting on, but many fans are bored of what he has to say on matters relating to Newcastle.

The Spaniard’s departure in the summer caused many to be emotional but it appears that sentiment is slowly fading, with some believing that Bruce is already doing a better job.

Despite now managing in China, the former Magpies boss hasn’t remained quiet in the media, and recently suggested that Newcastle are doing well at the moment, highlighting the fact that they have started to spend money.

A lack of backing from Mike Ashley was likely one of the reasons behind his departure, but there is little sympathy for him now from supporters, who instead have grown weary of Rafa discussing their fortunes.

Some want him to focus his attention elsewhere, such as on his current job. Here is what some fans have been saying.

The Raheem Sterling v Joe Gomez saga joins collection of famous footballing feuds

“Think you are the big man?” This is what Raheem Sterling reportedly said to Joe Gomez after reuniting at England’s training base just 24 hours after a fractious Anfield meeting between their respective clubs.

The ensuing altercation naturally dominated the back pages for days after and for talkSPORT and Sky the heightened drama warranted discussion about little else. It seemed that everybody had a view on it, an incident that can be judged equally to be a highlight and lowlight of the season so far.

We can expect too that whenever Sterling and Gomez are sharing the same pitch together for the rest of their careers – either as adversaries in Manchester City and Liverpool shirts or as England team-mates – the flash-point will return to the fore, following the pair around like a criminal record and the reasons for this go far beyond the sensational nature of the falling out.

First and foremost, it is extremely rare for a squabble between two high-profile footballers that has occurred inside the ‘inner sanctum’ of a ground or training facility (in this instance it was a canteen) to be made so public.

We know it must go on of course: how can it not when the work environment in question is so competitive and pressurised and includes so many egos? Only usually we have to rely on salacious gossip, passed on knowingly in pubs or on forums intimating that Player A doesn’t get on with Player B or that a fracas took place.

Here, happening as it did in front of many witnesses and by probable virtue of it reaching the press it reached a much wider domain. In doing so it has become public property.

A less pertinent factor – but still relevant when explaining why this momentary to-do will permeate for a lifetime – is that we have come to believe these days that intense club rivalries brought into the international set-up are a thing of the past.

How often do we inwardly wince at the sight of teams lining up ahead of a huge game all high-fiving and embracing one another, clearly friends, not foes.

In this regard the Sterling/Gomez incident acted as a welcome reminder that the animosity we feel as supporters is sometimes shared by the players. And that will be celebrated for some time to come.

That is not to suggest that we are under the misguided notion that players in the modern era aren’t capable of letting their emotions get the better of them, whether that be aimed at a team-mate or rival.

As recently as this September, Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings and Anwar El Ghazi had a coming together, with the former incensed at the latter for his failure to track back.

Perhaps though the most famous example of team-mates having a set-to all kicked off in 2005 when Newcastle’s Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer exchanged blows on the St James’ Park pitch in front of 50,000 gob-smacked fans.

“When he was raining the punches in I thought, ‘You need to get on the weights because they aren’t hurting’, Dyer said years later before confirming a long-running rumour that manager Graeme Souness then offered them both out in the changing room. Unsurprisingly each declined.

Ten years prior to that memorable meltdown Graeme Le Saux lashed out at Blackburn team-mate David Batty in a European encounter in chilly Moscow. “There was no justification for my behaviour,” the left-back admitted before reasonably pinpointing his anger on an underachieving season for Rovers so soon after they had won the Premier League. Batty, for his part wiped at his face seeking blood but there was none to be seen.

There was, however, claret on view at the Emirates in 2008 when Arsenal strikers Emmanuel Adebayor and Nicklas Bendtner pushed and shoved for space in the penalty area during a corner then began pushing and shoving each other instead.

From this shocking spat it was the Dane who visibly came off the worse, nursing a cut across the bridge of his nose and this incident differs from the others too in not being a one-off flare-up that was soon-after extinguished.

Annoyed at Bendtner’s flouting of a ‘no trainers’ rule in the dressing room Adebayor began a grudge that lasted for all of their time in north London.

And speaking of long lasting feuds, unquestionably the most well-known is that of Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham’s mutual lack of goodwill to one another despite the duo firing Manchester United to rarefied heights at the turn of the century. “I would rather sit down and have a cuppa with Neil Ruddock, who broke my leg in two places in 1996, than with Teddy Sheringham, who I’ve pretty much detested for the past 15 years,” Cole once wrote in a newspaper column.

Seeing several years of Sheringham and Cole harmoniously link up on the pitch it was difficult to square up the fact that they disliked one another so much and accepting this bodes well for any future England contests that feature Sterling and Gomez.

Because though the word coming out of the England camp is that the bust-up has been ‘put to bed’ we cannot know for sure if all the ill-feeling has been put aside. If that is not so then surely the defender and winger are professional enough to still get the job done.

Because the bottom line is that in any work place – or indeed any environment – there will always be two people who just don’t get along. “We are like a family,” Gareth Southgate said last week referring to his squad.

And we all know what families are like.

Mike Ashley’s Newcastle tenure would be summed up if they don’t sign Jarrod Bowen

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Until last year there had been a real reluctance from Mike Ashley to hand Newcastle funds to spend in the transfer market.

The £20m signing of Miguel Almiron and the £40m addition of Joelinton helped change that, however. They were both transfers that eradicated their previous transfer records but they’ve scored just one goal between them since arriving in English football.

It’s indicative of a Newcastle side that have been rather laboured in 2019, faltering countless times under Steve Bruce.

The most recent of those occasions was against a team in and around them. A 2-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa is unlikely to have done Bruce many favours, particularly upon return to his old hunting ground.

It is clear more goals are needed in January. Joelinton, Dwight Gayle and Andy Carroll just have one strike between them in 2019/20 so the potential addition of Jarrod Bowen could help ease those worries significantly.

The Hull man has been the subject of £20m interest from Newcastle in recent times and had scored 11 Championship goals from the flanks this term before netting twice against Preston on Tuesday.

A player blessed with pace and mazy dribbling ability, he’d undoubtedly add a greater attacking threat to Newcastle. However, it appears that the Magpies are now backing away from a potential deal in January.

Instead, they’ll initially target the loan market if The Chronicle is to be believed.

[ad_pod ]

The northeast side may have spent large sums in the summer but the lack of ambition here should be alarming. Ashley was more willing just a matter of months ago, but the failure to back the club’s head coach and inject more funds in January would sum up his tenure.

Rafa Benitez wasn’t sufficiently backed and they eventually lost him to China. Bruce’s stock isn’t as high as the former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager’s, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be given funds to strengthen.

After all, this Newcastle side isn’t exactly sitting pretty in 14th and their lack of threat in forward areas is a big concern. Almiron has struggled again, failing to score, and someone to provide competition for him on the right would be valuable.

At £20m, Bowen would be a snip, especially after seeing similar players take the step up from the Championship. Former Norwich man James Maddison racked up 100 key passes last term while Dan James has bagged three times since his move from Swansea.

If Ashley thinks loan moves are the way forward there is something very wrong at Newcastle.

Meanwhile, check out what Newcastle fans have been saying about Joelinton…
