West Ham Roundup: Pellegrini takes blame, Mills in awe of Yarmolenko, Zabaleta apologises

In today’s West Ham United roundup, we take a look at what news has been doing the rounds for the Hammers. Manuel Pellegrini has taken some of the responsibility for the embarrassing defeat to Oxford United, Danny Mills speaks highly of Andriy Yarmolenko, and Pablo Zabaleta has apologised for the ‘poor performance’ in midweek.

‘The responsibility is first on me’, says Pellegrini

Report: As told by BBC Sport, Pellegrini believes he is partly responsible for the defeat in the Carabao Cup to Oxford. The Chilean said: “The whole team didn’t play well. Not only did we concede four goals, but we didn’t create too many chances.

“We missed too many passes from the beginning and the responsibility is first on me because I picked the players, and second on the team that didn’t compete.

“It’s easy to say that we played very badly, but Oxford did everything they needed to win this game. They played with a lot of motivation, with desire and we didn’t play well.”

Verdict: It is very easy to point the fingers at the man in charge when a side loses 4-0, but in truth, the likes of Jack Wilshere, Pablo Zabaleta, Pablo Fornals, Robert Snodgrass and the many other experienced players should be breezing past a team that are mid-table in League One. Players of such great experience – including some who have won major trophies –  should not need a manager to manufacture a win against a team placed 75 positions lower than them, and as a result, the players have to take a large chunk of the blame.

It really is hard to blame Pellegrini for this one, as the Hammers had 63% of the ball but registered just nine shots as opposed to Oxford’s 17. In reality, it was just a dreadful performance from the travelling side, and the players should be the ones who have a long and hard look at themselves, not the manager.

Mills in awe of ‘outstanding’ Yarmolenko

Report: Speaking to Football Insider, former England international Danny Mills has heaped the praise of star man Yarmolenko after another superb display last week against Manchester United. Mills insists West Ham must get the Ukrainian on the ball as much as possible, and said: “He’s a very good player. Maybe lacks the pace of some but we’ve seen him in Europe for many, many years. Outstanding left foot, great quality on the ball.

“If Pellegrini’s going to play to strengths, give him the ball, get him on the ball as much as possible. You have to buy players to fit the way you want to play and it looks like that is what Pellegrini has done.”

Verdict: The former Borussia Dortmund man may not be the quickest out of the blocks but at 6ft 3, Yarmolenko will give almost any defender something to think about with his physicality and special left foot.

As he did before his awful injury last year, the 29-year-old has bagged twice in the early stages of the Premier League, smashing home against Norwich City and then giving his side the lead over United last time out.

This season, West Ham have certainly placed themselves in an early fight for the top six, although they may need a bit of fortune along the way. However, if they can keep Yarmolenko fit, they may find themselves breaking down the barrier of the big clubs.

Zabaleta ‘sorry’ after shock defeat

Report: As reported by the Evening Standard, experienced right-back Zabaleta has apologised for the team’s horrendous display against Oxford in the League Cup. The Argentine said: “If you look at the performance tonight, it was not anywhere near our standard and also in the way we lost was not good.

“I thought it was a poor performance from everyone. We are not the first Premier League team to be knocked out of the Carabao Cup. We saw Spurs and other Premier League teams struggling to win games like that.

“We still need to learn how to play those games, especially when you come from a big win like it was against Manchester United last Sunday. This was a completely different game against a League One team who play a different kind of football where the intensity is higher. That is why you have to perform well enough to win those games.”

Verdict: Quite remarkably, it is now the third year on the bounce that West Ham have crashed out of a cup competition at the hands of a club from the third tier. Last year saw Wimbledon beat the Hammers 4-2 in the FA Cup and the year prior saw notorious giant-killers Wigan Athletic overcome David Moyes’ men 2-0 in the same competition.

Now, after the defeat to Oxford, West Ham have made a bad habit of crashing out early in a competition that they should be prioritising.

The club have not won a major trophy for almost 40 years when they won the FA Cup in 1980, and the Carabao Cup may have been their best shot at ending that dreadful drought.

Of course, Pellegrini did make nine changes. But that is not an excuse for a team battling in the top end of the Premier League, regardless of who comes in and who misses out. Knowing the passion and honour which Zabaleta stands for, he will mean this apology – it’s now dependant on whether or not he and his team can turn things around.

Tottenham fans discuss idea of getting Erik ten Hag as their next manager

Some Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter have been discussing the potential of Ajax boss Erik ten Hag being their next manager.

It’s fair to say the pressure has increased a little on Mauricio Pochettino following the humiliating 7-2 home defeat by Bayern Munich on Tuesday, and it appears to have led to supporters starting to think about who they would want to replace the Argentine if he goes.

Jose Mourinho is one name that was mentioned in the aftermath of the heavy loss to the Bundesliga giants, and it appears that others are talking about ten Hag.

The 49-year-old of course led the Dutch side to the semi-finals of the Champions League last season, and they were on the cusp of meeting Liverpool in the final until Lucas Moura’s last-gasp goal.

They have started their current campaign in Europe’s elite club competition with two wins out of two as well – the latest an impressive 3-0 win in Spain against Valencia on Wednesday.

Ten Hag certainly seems to be doing something right then having nurtured the talents of Matthijs de Ligt and Donny van de Beek among others, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed in north London.

While one individual described him as “the closest to Poch in terms of philosophy”, another said he is a “young manager who would easily succeed at Tottenham”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Birmingham’s Dan Crowley proving change isn’t always bad

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

A little tweak looks to have been all it took for this guy to finally make a mark in the Second city.

Dan Crowley arrived with expectation in the summer but it has taken a while for him to show that the investment was worth it.

Throughout his career, Crowley has been played through the middle of the park, and predominantly as an attacking midfielder.

When he moved to St Andrew’s it seemed natural that he would carry on that role. In fact when he was first signed, the club website noted that:

“Style-wise, the creative Crowley has tended to be used as an attacking midfielder, often playing in the number 10 role”.

Given that the Blues played a 3-4-2-1 formation throughout pre-season with the width down the right-hand side coming from wing-back Maxime Colin, it would make sense to slot Dan Crowley with his passing proficiency into that attacking midfield role behind Lukas Jutkiewicz and act as the primary creator.

After all, this is a player who completed close to 85% of his passes and laid on seven assists last term.

However, with a change in formation to more of a 4-4-2 from boss Pep Clotet in recent games came a change in role for the 22-year-old.

Rather than operating in the centre, a role that was given to Ivan Sunjic instead, he has been operating out wide for the past couple of games and has finally been able to give us some tangible results, such as his only assists for far.

Thogden ranks all 24 Championship home kits in the video below…

His influence over proceedings has been increased and that was evident last Friday. The former Arsenal man played five key passes, the highest number he’s managed in 2019/20.

It’s certainly not a bad thing that he’s an adaptable player, there’s nothing wrong with being a utility player that can play multiple positions, James Milner has made a career out of it in the past couple of years.

Therefore, if he can keep showing his proficiency out wide, then it only goes to show that if Pep Clotet needs to make a change in strategy going forward, then Crowley’s place can be more or less assured.

West Ham should recall Fabian Balbuena to solve a worrying statistic

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

West Ham have got off to a reasonably good start in the Premier League but they could be better off had Manuel Pellegrini trusted one player more often.

On the chalkboard

Whilst the Hammers have earned good wins against Watford, Norwich and Manchester United, they can consider themselves to be slightly fortunate to be as high as eighth.

The reason for that is teams haven’t taken their chances in most of the eight league games they’ve had. The trip to Aston Villa stands out as an example of that, with Dean Smith’s side unable to find a goal their pressure arguably deserved.

According to Experimental 361’s Premier League expected goals table, Pellegrini’s side would be as low as 12th if the opposition they have faced had scored the chances they were expected to.

Watch West Ham United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

That casts doubt over the promising start West Ham have made in terms of wins and points earned, as they would have one less victory – and would have conceded twice more – if those goals had come.

As a result, the Hammers need to improve defensively, and since Mark Noble and Declan Rice are the best defensively-minded midfielders at the club, Pellegrini could call upon Fabian Balbuena, who has barely featured after the opening day defeat against Manchester City.

Shoring things up

West Ham may have gone on a six-game unbeaten streak in the league, but it slightly worrying that they have still conceded 11 goals in eight Premier League games.

Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna have started the majority of those matches, and although the latter has gained praise recently, he should be the player dropped in favour of Balbuena.

The Paraguayan has a better record than his teammate since signing for the club, helping his side keep five clean sheets compared to Ogbonna’s three last season.

From his 23 starts in 2018/19 the Hammers only conceded 31 goals, compared to 36 conceded from the 20 league games Ogbonna started, so it is clear they are more resolute with Balbuena at the back.

The defender also outclassed Ogbonna in winning tackles last year, with an average of 1.7 per game compared to the Italian’s 1.3, and trumped him in interceptions made – which is key to solving the problem of conceding chances – with an average of 2.3 compared to 1.5 per game.

West Ham visit Everton next up, a fixture last term in which Balbuena stamped his authority in the team and showed exactly why he was brought in, and these recent findings may lead the Chilean to consider a recall for the 28-year-old.

Leeds’ director Victor Orta wasting his time by tracking Reece James

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

We may only be mid-way through October but it seems as if plans are already being put in motion for a busy January transfer window.

Leeds were extremely active during the summer market as they shipped on 31 players either on a temporary or permanent basis.

But the winter looks as though it’ll be another interesting period for Victor Orta, not least in the fact he may have to fight hard to keep Eddie Nketiah in west Yorkshire.

Talk of a potential recall has done the rounds in recent days with Bristol City monitoring the 20-year-old again.

However, it’s a player one year his junior that is now at the centre of attention.

Chelsea’s Reece James has been linked with a move to Elland Road, one that could see him join the Whites on loan if he falls out of favour under Frank Lampard.

Whether the Blues boss would consider business with a side he clashed with over Spygate last season remains to be seen, but despite James’ superb qualities, Orta would be wasting his time by trying to land him.

It’s no secret how exceptional the 19-year-old was in the Championship last term, starring at right back and eventually in the middle of the pitch too.

He was a consistent figure, winning 2.1 tackles per game but also registering 1.6 crosses each outing on average.

A highly-rated prospect, he’s been compared to a Chelsea stalwart of the past as well. Journalist Joe Tweedie previously noted: “When you marry his physicality (James has a touch of the Michael Essien’s about him) with great technique, you have a serious prospect on your hands.”

A glowing report indeed, but do Leeds actually need him? Arguably not. It’s important to consider those in the pecking order at Elland Road and there is already huge competition at both right-back and in the middle of the pitch.

The defensive midfield role he played in at times for Wigan is occupied by Kalvin Phillips while Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas are set to battle it out at full-back.

The latter has earned considerable plaudits from supporters this term and Ayling played 40 times in the Championship last term so it would be a challenge for James to dislodge the pair of them.

Why are Leeds fans the best in the country? Find out in the video below…

With just five loanees allowed in a single matchday squad, Orta would be better off considering a temporary deal for someone in a position they’re light in or lacking quality – not a right back.

Anyone for an added centre half or striker?
