Preston manager Alex Neil, reportedly one of the leading contenders for the West Brom manager’s job, played down links to the role, but would not rule out taking over definitively

The former Norwich boss dismissed the rumours as merely “speculation” and admitted that the only discussions he has had with anyone is about Preston North End.

Neil told the Lancashire Post: “There is speculation all the time. The amount of times I have sat in press conferences at different clubs and people will say ‘I hear you are signing so-and-so’ and I have never even heard of them.

“It is a case of someone saying something to a paper somewhere or someone starts a rumour, then all of a sudden it catches fire and it is all over the place.

“The one thing that is absolutely guaranteed is that I have had no discussions with anyone about anything other than Preston North End. That is it.”

The favourite for the role continues to be former Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic, and it would surely be a surprise if the Serbian was not offered the job.

But fears must be growing among Albion fans that the club may decide to leave current caretaker boss James Shan in place for the remainder of the season, before making a permanent appointment in the summer.

It would be a disastrous decision, given the Baggies’ position in the table, and promotion still a more than realistic aim.

It would leave the club in a bit of a status quo, with the similarities between their current position and that when they installed Darren Moore to replace Alan Pardew last season.

Fans would rightly see it as a backward step, and should the club fail to be successful in returning to the Premier League — likely to be through the play-off route — then the finger would be pointed at the club hierarchy, and no one else.

For Albion to have a realistic chance, they must make the most of the upcoming international break, and install their man immediately, whether it be Jokanovic, Neil, or someone currently under the radar.

The uncertainty is not helping anyone, least of all, the players.

وقال فان دايك في تصريحات نشرتها شبكة “بي بي سي” العالمية: “من الصعب أن نخسر بالطريقة التي حدثت الليلة، أولًا وقبل كل شيء يجب الإشادة بما قدمه أستون فيلا، علينا أن نمنحهم التقدير الذي يستحقونه”.

وأضاف: “مباراة اليوم أحد تلك العروض التي لم نكن فيها جيدين منذ البداية حتى النهاية، الأهداف التي استقبلناها كان يجب أن نتصدى لها، ولكن أيضًا الفرص التي سنحت لنا كان علينا استغلالها، كان يجب أن نقدم أداء أفضل”.

وواصل: “بشكل عام، نشعر جميعًا بخيبة أمل، لم يكن يجب أن نخسر مع الأرقام التي حققناها، ولكن الأمر يتعلق بالتمسك ببعضنا البعض والتأكد من عدم حدوث ذلك مرة أخرى”.

وتابع: “لا يمكن عدم الإشادة بـ أستون فيلا، كان يجب أن نكون أكثر قدرة على التحمل، في جميع جوانب المباراة كان يجب أن نفعل أفضل بكثير، من المهم ألا نصاب بالجنون ولكن علينا التفكير فيما حدث، مستوى الأداء بين فوزنا على آرسنال في الدوري وخسارتنا اليوم كان كبيرًا جدًا”.

وغاب ساديو ماني عن مباراة اليوم بسبب إصابته بفيروس كورونا، كما غاب الحارس أليسون بيكر بسبب الإصابة.

وعندما سُئل عن تأثير غياب النجمين على مباراة اليوم، أجاب فان دايك: “استعددنا بشكل جيد ولعبنا مباراة جيدة أمام آرسنال في منتصف الأسبوع، كانت استعداداتنا جيدة وكنا جاهزين لها قبل المباراة، للأسف لم يحدث اليوم ما أردناه”.

Well, what a shambles that was! Nottingham Forest simply don’t deserve to reach the play-offs if they can’t even beat rock-bottom Ipswich. It’s still possible, but their recent form has been so hit and miss that it’s looking far too much to ask.

Saturday’s game was the PERFECT way to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to fellow play-off challengers Aston Villa, but instead, they dropped two big points and could have lost the game if it wasn’t for an own goal before half-time.

A club the size of Forest should be challenging for promotion every season as a minimum expectation, and until the last month or so, Martin O’Neill and his squad would have been confident of claiming a play-off spot. Now, their form has dipped and teams like Villa have stepped up in their place.

Two losses, one draw and one win if far too inconsistent to be in with a shout for promotion at the end of the season. Their next two games are against Swansea and Rotherham, which are both winnable fixtures, and they’ll have to win both to get back on track with where to clubs feels it should be.

It’s tight between them in 11thand the play-off places, but there’s seven close-knit teams battling between them and 6th spot, meaning a slip up will mean at least one of those will capitalise on any points dropped. It’s not as if there’s only a couple of teams who can get lucky by slipping up at the same time as their rivals.

This Forest form isn’t good enough to take them into the play-offs, and they don’t deserve to be there. Indeed, they’re going to have to up their game after the international break or face a very boring end to the season.

It is an exciting time to be a Portsmouth fan, isn’t it?

After years of financial ruin and uncertainty in regards to the future of the club, it appears as if Pompey are finally on their way back to the big time.

Next week’s Checkatrade Trophy clash with Sunderland will be the first time that they have been back at Wembley Stadium since losing in the FA Cup final to Chelsea in 2010. According to The News, Pompey are expected to be backed by over 40,000 supporters in a game which is almost certain to break the attendance record for the competition which currently stands at 80, 451 (via the Express and Star).

Yet despite an understandable buzz around their visit to Wembley, it is extremely important that Kenny Jackett’s side do not overlook Saturday’s match against Shrewsbury Town. Currently fourth in League One, a victory at the Montgomery Waters Meadow could see Portsmouth move within one point of the automatic promotion positions. However, if they enter the game thinking solely about their game against Sunderland, they could suffer a defeat which may have to see them settle for the lottery that is the play-offs at the end of the season.

With a strong squad at his disposal, there is no reason why Jackett cannot lead his side to the double triumph of winning both promotion to the Championship and securing success in the Checkatrade trophy. Therefore, maintaining the same level of commitment in their game against the Salop is vital for Pompey as they look to continue their recent resurgence in form.

In terms of looking at the future for Portsmouth, it could be argued that a return to the Championship may be more financially viable in the long run than a one-off success at Wembley. However, fans will be keen to point out that during their seven-year stay in the Premier League, their greatest ever moment in recent history actually came at the home of the England national team as Nwankwo Kanu’s goal secured their first FA Cup triumph in 69 years back in 2008.

وواصل: “فوز أسوان اليوم على حرس الحدود أعطى لنا أريحية ولفرق كثيرة في جدول الدوري تصارع الهبوط”.

استكمل: “محمد عبد المنصف مستمر مع الفريق ويقدم أداء جيد ورائع منذ عامين، ونريد تحقيق المكسب في المباراة لكي نضمن البقاء بشكل رسمي”.

وعن رحيل اللاعبين مثل محمود عبد العاطي ومرعي، قال: “لا نستطيع أن نتحدث عن شيء، خاصة أننا لن نضمن البقاء في الدوري بنسبة 100%، وإدارة دجلة لن تقف أمام مستقبل أي لاعب”.

The vast majority of Rangers fans will be hoping they can sign Ryan Kent on a permanent deal in the summer, but a recent report from the Daily Record suggests they could be priced out of the deal.

What’s the word?

The Daily Record claim that Steven Gerrard, who is hoping to make Kent’s move permanent in the summer, feels he is already fighting a losing battle to keep the 22-year-old at Ibrox, with clubs at the lower end of the Premier League as well as Championship clubs potentially willing to meet Liverpool’s asking price.

Speaking of the asking price, the same report claims that his parent club will demand a fee between £8m and £10m – a huge sum of money for a club of Rangers’ limited financial power.

And sources have claimed that Liverpool believe this summer represents the perfect opportunity to sell a player who has failed to boost his stock in four previous loan spells.

Is Kent overpriced?

From Liverpool’s perspective, Kent’s season couldn’t have gone much better. He is clearly below the standard required to break into the first-team at Anfield and his loan move was merely a feasible way of placing him in the shop window.

However, for a club of Rangers’ stature and torrid financial history, it’s fair to say that the reported price-tag is extortionate, especially when considered in the context of his past failures.

Sky Sports journalist Charles Paterson has described Kent as a player who “has shown flashes of brilliance when he’s been fit”.

Relatively speaking, that verdict is not one which you would attribute to a player commanding a price-tag of up to £10 million.

Kent has been electric on his day and a devastatingly creative spark when in full flow, but how often does that day come round?

If Rangers are to progress and genuinely challenge the status quo in Scottish football they need more than just sporadic bursts of quality from a £10 million player; they need consistent quality and preferably at a modest price.

The Gers faithful will undoubtedly rue Kent’s departure but, as Paterson has hinted, he is overpriced for a player whose brilliance has been limited to flashes.

There’s something about the tag ‘Brazilian wonderkid’ that gets perks the eyebrows of football fans everywhere.

From Neymar to Robinho to Vinicius Junior, the Brazilian wonderkid is without a doubt one of the most exciting breeds of players in world football, and according to recent reports, Arsenal are on the verge of signing one.

According to Yahoo Esportes, Arsenal have reached a verbal agreement with Sao Paulo-based side Ituano for the signing of 17-year-old forward Gabriel Martinelli for a reported deal of £5 million.

Martinelli has been one of Ituano’s star players this season, scoring 10 goals for the fourth-division Brazilian side in 31 appearances, and the teenager could join the north London club as soon as next month once he has obtained an Italian passport if reports are to be believed.

Arsenal beat out 25 other teams for the signature of Martinelli, which is an impressive feat given that some of the clubs that were in the war for the teenager included Brazilian giants Palmeiras and Flamengo as well as Spanish side Barcelona, who have a good history of bringing in South American talent to Europe.

Martinelli will be only the ninth Brazilian player to join the Gunners and the second to join the club as a teenager, the first being Denilson back in 2006 who signed for Arsenal as an 18-year-old.

Although the striker won’t likely play first-team football for the first season or two, it is a testament for how high a reputation Arsenal still have on a global level despite two years without Champions League football and one world-class player.

Unai Emery’s mission to make Arsenal a powerhouse in world football again might be something that takes a while to execute, but by signing these wonderkids and exciting prospects, it will only add to his goal of rebuilding the club back to its former glory.

أكد طاهر محمد طاهر لاعب المقاولون العرب، المنتظر انضمامه للنادي الأهلي مع بداية الموسم المقبل، أنه لن يلعب في مصر إلا ضمن صفوف القلعة الحمراء، مشيرًا إلى أنه الفريق هو الأقرب لحسم بطولة دوري أبطال افريقيا هذا الموسم.

وقال طاهر في تصريحات تلفزيونية عبر فضائية “أون تايم سبورتس”: “لم أتحدث مع الأهلي في أمر وجود بند في التعاقد يتيح لي الاحتراف”.

وعن رغبة ناديي بيراميدز والزمالك في ضمه، أجاب: “لا أعرف ولو كان هناك كنت سأرفض واختار الأهلي، نادي الزمالك لم يتحدث معي رسميًا أو عن طريق الوسطاء، ولن ألعب في مصر سوى لـ الأهلي”.

وواصل: “أسابيع قليلة متبقية على انتهاء بطولتي الدوري والكأس، وبعد ذلك انضم للنادي الأهلي، ومصطفى شوبير أقرب لاعب لي في النادي، ويتواصل معي باستمرار”.

وتابع: “أتدرب في الصباح بشكل منفرد يوميًا، بخلاف مران الفريق في المساء”.

وأضاف: “بيتسو موسيماني مدرب كبير وأظن أن النادي الأهلي كان ذكيًا جدًا في التعاقد معه بهذه المواصفات ونحن مقبلين على بطولة إفريقيا، وكانت صفقة قوية وذكية جدًا، والأهلي الأقرب لتحقيق دوري أبطال إفريقيا، وأتمنى النهائي يكون بين الأهلي والزمالك”.

وكشف: “عُرض عليّ من فترة قريبة إعلان لأحد الشركات الراعية للنادي الأهلي، وبعد موافقتي بساعات استقبلت مكالمة من أمير توفيق، وأبلغني أن محمود الخطيب لا يرغب في ظهوري الآن، واحترمت ذلك، لأنني لا أنظر للأموال”.

وأتم: ” تلقيت اتصالا من الخطيب بعد الانضمام لـ الأهلي وقال لي (مبروك على الانضمام،) توترت كثيرًا وأنا أحادثه، وكنت أتمنى مقابلته”.

واختتم: “حدث اتصال من فترة مع حسام البدري مدرب منتخب مصر لكي يطمئن على مشاركتي، تدربت معه من قبل وأحترمه جدًا”.
