Wolves target Allan Saint-Maximin would help cause chaos

According to The Daily Mail, Wolves are interested in signing Newcastle’s flamboyant forward Allan Saint-Maximin.

The Magpies only signed the Frenchman back in the summer, agreeing a deal worth £16.5m with Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice for his signature.

Since then, the 22-year-old has been in electric form, dazzling Premier League opposition with his tricks and dribbling ability.

How has he done?

Well, while his end product has been somewhat lacking with only one goal and one assist to his name in the Premier League, the Newcastle No.10 has still been an eye-catching performer.

Saint-Maximin, who is valued at £22.5m on Transfermarkt, completes a massive 4.6 dribbles per game – only Wilfried Zaha and Adama Traore embark on more successful dribbles with 4.7 and 5.2 respectively.

The former OGC Nice attacker also registers a respectable 1.3 key passes per game – world-class players such as Heung-min Son and Bernardo Silva average 1.4 per game, by comparison.

Newcastle are the Premier League’s joint-lowest scorers this season, so perhaps his teammates’ lack of efficiency in front of goal is harming his chances of an improved amount of assists.

Him & Traore would make Wolves too hot to handle

Saint-Maximin alone is a player worthy of an opposition manager’s pre-match presentation, such is his ability to cause chaos and run rings around players, dragging them out of position.

Another man who can do such a thing to the opponent is Traore, a player who – as aforesaid – records the most dribbles out of every player in the Premier League with 5.2 per game.

The Spaniard alone is wreaking havoc in England’s top-flight this term with four goals and seven assists to his name too, so if he was partnered by Saint-Maximin at Molineux, one imagines that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side would be too hot to handle.

It would mean the Midlands-based side have two of the Premier League’s top three dribblers – if the opposition had a plan to double or triple up on Traore, they’d have another mesmeric man to worry about in Saint-Maximin, handing Nuno another dimension in the process.

Journalist provides hard-hitting Liverpool verdict

The Independent’s Melissa Reddy has provided a hard-hitting verdict on Liverpool’s recent form.Jurgen Klopp’s side have lost three of their last four games in all competitions, having suffered defeats to Atletico Madrid, Watford and Chelsea. As Reddy states in her tweet, if you look at the Reds’ last five games, they have only scored four goals and conceded eight.Even in those games that Liverpool have ended up winning, such as the 1-0 win over Norwich and the 3-2 victory over West Ham, the European champions have struggled to get going – the win over the Hammers was particularly unconvincing, as they were 2-1 down midway through the second-half.

Liverpool are definitely enduring a blip, and their season hangs in the balance having now crashed out of the FA Cup – if they don’t overturn their last 16 tie against Atletico Madrid, the Reds will only have the Super Cup, Club World Cup and, you would expect, the Premier League to show for their otherworldly efforts.

That would usually be more than enough, but given just how incredibly Liverpool have performed this season, you can’t help but feel like they could’ve hoovered up every piece of silverware in sight.

You can see Reddy’s hard-hitting words in her tweet below:

Dominic Calvert-Lewin reacts to disallowed goal

Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin has reacted after watching his disallowed goal against Manchester United. The Toffees striker struck what appeared to be a winner against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men in stoppage time at Goodison Park on Sunday, although it was ruled out by VAR after Chris Kavanagh deemed the offside Gylfi Sigurdsson to have blocked David de Gea’s view of the ball.It would’ve meant that Calvert-Lewin went home with two goals in a 2-1 win for his side, although he was forced to settle for just one as both teams played out a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon – his first effort came after De Gea smashed the ball at him before it ricocheted into the net.The Englishman branded the moment as a “disaster” before also complaining that Sigurdsson wasn’t even blocking the United glovesman’s sight – in fairness to the Spaniard, the former Tottenham man was in his way.

Tottenham Hotspur: Fans delighted with Hugo Lloris injury news

Many Tottenham Hotspur fans are delighted at the news that first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has ‘returned to training’ ahead of the team’s Premier League clash away at Burnley tomorrow evening (via Tottenham Hotspur website).

He has been out of the picture for a while because of a groin injury and understudies Paulo Gazzaniga and Michel Vorm have had to take his place. Spurs have gone five games in all competitions without a win, including in their last outing on Wednesday night when they eventually lost 3-2 to Norwich City on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate in extra-time. Vorm was in goal for that night and only managed to make one save in the shootout, after making an error leading to the Canaries’ equaliser in his only appearance for the club this season (via Sofascore).

Lloris has only made 16 appearances across all competitions this season, largely because of injury (via Transfermarkt). He has only managed to claim two shutouts though, both coming in the Premier League. He has also conceded 26 times across the competitions. However, these Spurs fans are still delighted that their club captain has returned to full training and they will hope he can make a comeback with the second leg away at RB Leipzig in the Champions League approaching.

Many Spurs fans expressed their delight on Twitter, with one fan pleading for the 33 year-old to ‘save us’:

Rave reviews for the 8th wonder of the world, Adama Traore

This season has been quite a remarkable one for Adama Traore.

Last season, there still remained questions about his end product – from the man himself, no less. Yet this term, there can be no such complaints. In all competitions, he has managed six goals and 10 assists, and his performances have attracted attention from very high places.

Rumour has it that Liverpool and Barcelona are both interested, with Wolves even slapping a £70m price-tag on his head.

He has been one of the stars of the campaign. But don’t take our word for it – here are three rave reviews from those in the know…

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool manager

Soccer Football – Champions League – Round of 16 Second Leg – Liverpool v Atletico Madrid – Anfield, Liverpool, Britain – March 11, 2020 Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp after the match REUTERS/Phil Noble

Liverpool have been caused big problems so far this campaign – they have won 27 of their 29 games in the Premier League, picking up a huge 82 points along the way, and currently possess a 25-point lead at the top of the table.

However, according to Jurgen Klopp, Traore has been a handful for his side this term.

He said following the Reds’ narrow 2-1 victory at Molineux early this term, as per Goal.com:

“[Traore] is unplayable in moments, it’s unbelievable. What a player – it’s not only him but he’s so good.”

Indeed, in that match, the 23-year-old was at the top of his game. He completed all four of his attempted dribbles, made two key passes, and also won three fouls – it is not too surprising that the Anfield outfit have been linked with him.

Tim Spiers/James Pearce, The Athletic

Interest in The Athletic’s has really increased in the UK this season, and that is largely down to the big name journalists they have working for them. Spiers and Pearce, experts on Wolves and Liverpool respectively, put together a piece in January, and they wrote for the outlet:

“Players, managers and fans are running out of words to describe him with, or people to compare him to. Best to just sit back and marvel at the wonder that is Adama Traore, Wolves’ eighth wonder of the world.”

Eighth wonder of the world is rather catchy! It is hard to describe him, though – there are so few players like him that there are so few comparisons to be made.

Jetro Willems, Newcastle left-back

Willems has plenty of experience at the highest level. He played in the Champions League with PSV, whilst he also appeared in the Europa League semi-finals last year with Eintracht Frankfurt, eventually losing to Chelsea.

He also played against Cristiano Ronaldo, but according to him, Traore is just as tricky to play against.

He told The Northern Echo:

“I have played against some very good players in my career, but no one quite as fast as Traore. He is unbelievable, definitely a beast. Not only is he incredibly fast, he is so, so strong as well. He’s known as the fastest man in football and now I know that is true. I like to think I am quite fast too – at least I did before playing against him! That was something else. I have played against Ronaldo, who is fast, but not that fast. Of course, he is so skilful but sometimes that is easier than being up against someone with such incredible pace. I played against Ronaldo in the Euros when Netherlands played Portugal. That was tough, but this was as tough an afternoon as I have had even though I thought I did quite well.”

That was after the Old Gold’s 1-1 draw with the Toon in January.

That was a quiet but still solid afternoon for the former Barcelona youth product – he completed six of his 10 dribbles, for example.

A comparison with Ronaldo is as good as it gets – and his pace is clearly something to behold.

On this day: Wolves make history at Old Trafford

With a capacity of 32,050, Molineux is by no means an underwhelming place to watch football.

It is the one and only stadium in which Wolves have played their home games since they were formed in 1887. The record attendance for a match there is 61,315 – almost double what it can hold now – which came in February 1939.

Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Interestingly, though, they also hold the record for the highest attendance at Old Trafford – and it came in a match in which Manchester United didn’t even feature. Again in 1939, on March 25th, they made history in their clash versus Grimsby in the FA Cup semi-final.

Nowadays, the Red Devils’ historic arena can hold as many as 74,879 – but the Old Gold and the Mariners surpassed even that in their match over 80 years ago. They managed to fit in 76,962 people into the stadium, and the fans then took in Wolves’ huge 5-0 victory, which meant they reached the final for the sixth time in their history.

That final of the competition was played, as it is now, at Wembley Stadium. They came up against Portsmouth, but they were unable to contain the south-coast side, finishing on the receiving end of a 4-1 defeat.

That match was another historic occasion – it proved to be that last FA Cup final before Great Britain entered into war with Germany.

It would be seven years before domestic English football’s biggest match would take place in a time of peace.

Spurs manager Jose Mourinho and Daniel Levy disagree on Ndombele

According to a report by French media outlet Foot Mercato, via Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho and chairman Daniel Levy disagree over the future of club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Foot Mercato suggest that Paris Saint-Germain have added the former Lyon midfielder to their summer transfer wish-list, and they are ready to compete with another reported suitor in Barcelona for the 23-year-old’s signature.

The report says that PSG manager Leonardo has already been in contact with the Frenchman’s entourage, with further talks with his representatives expected to be held in the coming weeks.

The story adds that there are doubts over the £53.8m man’s future in north London because of Mourinho, who publicly criticised Ndombele following the draw against Burnley earlier this month.

However, the report adds that Levy doesn’t agree with the man he appointed as Mauricio Pochettino’s successor in December, believing the midfielder can still come good in the future.

Who wins this battle?

It will certainly be an interesting discussion between the Tottenham duo this summer if a sizeable bid does arrive for Ndombele.

Based on what Mourinho has seen so far, it would be no surprise at all if he was willing to accept a fair bid for the 23-year-old, but it appears as though Levy feels he deserves longer in the capital to make an impact.

Given Spurs’ transfer budget reportedly could be reduced to £50m should they miss out on Champions League qualification – if and when the Premier League season resumes – so perhaps Levy’s views could change if they fail to do that.

Potentially recouping around £50m would allow Mourinho to offload a player he doesn’t appear to be keen on – even if he did describe his performance as “absolutely phenomenal” in December – according to this latest report, and strengthen his squad in other areas which could help Tottenham in the long run.

Levy is a known tough negotiator though, so while that may make relative sense, the former Manchester United and Chelsea boss may need to be at his best to convince his chairman that letting Ndombele go for the right money is the correct call.

Leeds United: Fans react to journalist’s Elland Road post

Many Leeds United fans have reacted to a tweet from journalist Phil Hay on the decision to turn the South Stand of Elland Road into a home end.

With football at a standstill due to the recent pandemic, football fans have been engaging with each other via social media, and journalists have also been discussing various club topics.

Hay, who is a Leeds United writer for The Athletic, is the latest to engage with fans, discussing the atmosphere at Elland Road, complimenting the club on the decision to change the South Stand from an away section back to a home section.

The South Stand sits 1,710 fans, and away fans will now be moving to an area of the West Stand.

Leeds sit first in the Championship and are on the verge of a return to the Premier League after 16 years away from England’s top flight (BBC Sport). Marcelo Bielsa’s side have been excellent this term, bouncing back after losing in the play-off semi-final last season to Derby County.

Reacting to Hay’s tweet, fans gave their opinion on the atmosphere at Elland Road:

Everton target Poulsen has been compared to Benzema

Ever since Carlo Ancelotti arrived at the club Everton have been linked with a whole host of talented players from across Europe, including Yussuf Poulsen.

What’s the word?

Ancelotti’s appointment was always bound to prompt plenty of transfer speculation.

The Toffees are set to undergo an on-pitch revolution under the Italian’s tutelage but he seems likely to request a handful of new players in order to achieve the club’s ambitions.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%</sp

And, according to German media outlet Bild, RB Leipzig attacker Poulsen is on the club’s radar, though Newcastle United are winning the race ahead of both Everton and West Ham United.

The report claims that the 6ft 4 colossus has handed in a transfer request due to a lack of game time under Julian Nagelsmann, and he is said to be available for a fee of €30m (£27m).

Lung-bursting and Benzema-esque

With 43 caps for the Denmark national side, Poulsen is already blessed with plenty of experience at both club and international level at just 25 years of age.

But what exactly can Everton fans expect from the mooted transfer target if he eventually makes the move to Merseyside?

Well, according to Bundesliga.com, there are shades of Karim Benzema in his style of play.

“Just like the Real Madrid forward, Poulsen is also not afraid to take aim himself and unleash venomous shots, while both are pretty useful in the air. He may not have always posted as impressive numbers as Werner, but similar to the way Benzema acts a decoy for the likes of Gareth Bale, among others, his importance to the team goes deeper than pure statistics.”

His numbers may not have been as impressive as Werner’s but that is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. After all, his strike partner is one of the hottest properties on the continent and it’s no coincidence that he is being consistently linked with a move to Liverpool.

But that is not to say that Poulsen is incapable of finding the net on a regular basis. In the 2018/19 season, for example, he scored 15 Bundesliga goals in 31 games while also providing four assists.

Beyond his prowess in front of goal, the former Lyngby BK ace offers plenty of energy and determination, pressing the opposition and defending from the front to ease the burden on the midfield.

Indeed, Werner has suggested that Poulsen has “an amazing set of lungs,” while former Leipzig teammate David Selke has uttered a similar sentiment: “He’s got the lungs of a horse – Yussi runs like crazy.”

A hard-working, Benzema-esque striker at the spearhead of Everton’s attack will certainly help to bring out the best in Richarlison and Bernard next season.

Liverpool: Fans ecstatic at latest Premier League update

Liverpool fans have waited 30 years to win a league title – they are now within touching distance of doing just that.

The Reds, of course, are currently top of the Premier League by a huge 25 points, and they are just two wins and six points away from confirming their status as champions. They would have likely long since been confirmed as the winners had the current pandemic not led to football across the continent and the globe being suspended.

In recent days, though, there have been positive signs that the top tier in England may soon be on the way back. It has been reported that football could be played from June 1st, and now there has been another development. The Daily Mail say that games could be played at home grounds instead of neutral venues if the clubs cover the cost of keeping fans away from the stadiums.

As you can imagine, this has absolutely delighted the Reds supporters – one fan called the news “huge”. They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.
