Williams and Co demolish records to keep Zimbabwe undefeated

Williams’ 174 powered Zimbabwe to their highest ODI total before they bowled USA out for 104

Zimbabwe crushed USA by 304 runs, registering the second-biggest margin of victory by runs in ODIs. USA ran into a side that has been in red-hot form in this World Cup Qualifier as Zimbabwe feasted on runs to put up their highest-ever total in ODIs, surpassing the 351 they made against Kenya in 2001.After seeing off the new ball, Zimbabwe went all guns blazing in the final 35 overs and were led by their stand-in-captain Sean Williams who was an unstoppable force on the day as he raced to his hundred in a mere 65 deliveries, sending the jam-packed crowd into raucous applause.Related

Williams romped to 174 off 101 deliveries as the hosts put up an impregnable total of 408. While he started to cramp up in the last ten overs, he was aided by useful contributions from the opening wicketkeeper-batter Joylord Gumbie, the in-form Sikandar Raza, and then Ryan Burl.Once again, USA let themselves down in the fielding department. Nostush Kenjige had Gumbie and Raza dropped off his own bowling, and they both feasted on the errors as nothing went in USA’s favour on a forgettable day. The dropped chances proved too costly in a game where they were lacking the services of their main men and death overs specialists Ali Khan and Saurabh Netravakar – who were both struck down by flu.Gumbie and Williams put on a 160-run partnership for the third wicket to lay down the platform for Zimbabwe. Williams was the aggressor, milking the spinners for runs, especially the debutant Usman Rafiq, who leaked 40 runs in four overs.Sikandar Raza scored 48 runs and took two wickets on the day•ICC/Getty Images

Raza then came in and hit five fours and two sixes en route to his 27-ball 48 before Burl clubbed 47 off 16. One hit away from equalling AB de Villiers for the fastest ODI fifty, Burl was caught at deep midwicket off Jessy Singh in the 48th over.In reply, USA snapped under the scoreboard pressure. They were bundled out for a paltry score of 104 as Richard Ngarava, who ran riot with a scorching spell upfront, coupled with Raza took two wickets apiece while Brad Evans, Luke Jongwe, and Burl grabbed one each.Ngarava sent both openers back early. He got Steven Taylor capitulating to a vicious snorter on off that he nicked through to the keeper and in his very next over, he beat Sushant Modani’s cut as Zimbabwe’s opening burst proved too hot to handle for a depleted side that was reeling from a flu outbreak in the camp.USA captain Monank Patel got out in single figures after miscuing a drive to mid-on where Williams pocketed a low catch, and thereon the game became a point of discussion about records as USA’s resistance quickly petered out due to the loss of wickets at frequent intervals. There were as many as three run-outs in the innings and two mix-ups in the tenth over by Brad Evans; both Aaron Jones and Shayan Jahangir were involved in a terrible botch-up.Zimbabwe made four changes coming into the game, with Innocent Kaia, Jongwe, Evans and Tadiwanashe Marumani replacing Blessing Muzarabani, Craig Ervine, Clive Madande and Tendai Chatara, but continued in the same manner as they have in the World Cup Qualifier, and will be riding high on confidence going into the Super Sixes stage.

Wolves now willing to pay £27m+ to sign "excellent" new winger for Pereira

Wolverhampton Wanderers are almost there in their bid for Premier League survival, and Vitor Pereira now has a talented winger in his sights to bolster their forward line, per a report.

Wolverhampton Wanderers prepared to acquire summer reinforcements

In truth, Wolves have endured a frustrating campaign that hasn’t panned out as hoped, but the struggles of Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton have them on the brink of retaining their Premier League status.

The Old Gold have earned their nine-point advantage since Pereira took over at Molineux. Losing one of their last four in the top flight has shown a resilience previously lacking under Gary O’Neil, albeit the Englishman did a respectable job before enduring an unfortunate downturn in form.

Either way, there is no appetite for a repeat of events come next season. Wolves are reportedly eyeing a move for Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens as they begin to kickstart a summer recruitment drive expected to yield changes.

Diogo Jota has been mentioned in connection with an emotional return to the Black Country, showing evidence that the forward line could be a key area for reinforcements to occur.

Manchester United are keen on Wolves talisman Matheus Cunha and the Brazil international is someone who may need replaced despite signing a contract extension earlier in the year. Nobody wants to lose star assets, though there is an awareness that he is destined for great heights following an excellent run of form in 2024/25.

Now, the Old Gold appear to have turned their attention to a talent who has caught the attention of several clubs due to his exploits in one of Europe’s top-five leagues.

Wolverhampton Wanderers ready to strike for Deportivo star Yeremay

According to a report in Spain, Wolves are ready to activate Deportivo La Coruna attacker Yeremay Hernandez’s £27.6 million release clause during the summer window.

Brentford and Leicester City are also in the hunt for his signature after a return of 11 goals and four assists in 30 La Liga 2 appearances this campaign.

He could be their Lemina replacement…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 29, 2025

Labelled “excellent” by Ben Mattinson, the Spain Under-21 international predominantly features off the left flank, though he is also capable of carrying out his duties on the opposite wing.

Hernandez is said to be happy at his current employers, but Deportivo’s financial status may hold the key to whether a summer transfer could materialise. Excelling in Spain’s second tier, the 22-year-old has created 43 chances and completed 108 dribbles on league duty.

Ultimately, Wolves need options that promote tactical variation and Hernandez’s ball-carrying, intuition and ability to find the back of the net would be a major asset.

Finalising survival will be the main priority for Pereira. Still, he looks to have done his homework on targets that could elevate his side to a new level.

Pakistan are set to play India on September 2 in Kandy in the 2023 Asia Cup, which is scheduled to start on August 30, a day earlier than originally planned by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). ESPNcricinfo has learnt the tournament opener will be played in Multan with hosts Pakistan playing Nepal with the final scheduled in Colombo on September 17.Those matches feature in the latest version of the draft schedule which is likely to see further changes before the ACC announces the final version. The original draft schedule, prepared by the PCB (the hosting board), has already undergone several iterations mainly because of the six-nation tournament being played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka based on the hybrid model approved by the ACC recently.Related

Four Asia Cup matches in Pakistan; remaining nine in SL

A total of 13 matches will be played in the tournament. Pakistan are grouped with India and Nepal in Group A while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in Group B. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super Four stage with the top two teams in this phase advancing to the final. The Asia Cup, which will be played in the 50-overs format this time, is essentially a preparation run for five of the six teams – barring Nepal – for the ODI World Cup which begins from October 5 in India. As per the original model, which was prepared by the PCB, Pakistan were meant to host four matches in just one city. However, Multan was added as the second venue after a new PCB administration, under new chairman Zaka Ashraf, took over this month. In the draft schedule, Multan is scheduled to host just the opening match with Lahore staging three matches and one Super Fours game.Bangladesh are slotted to play Afghanistan on September 3 in Lahore followed by Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan at the Gaddafi Stadium on September 5. The draft schedule also points out that regardless of where they finish in the first round, Pakistan will remain A1 and India A2 while Sri Lanka will be B1 and Bangladesh B2. In case Nepal and Afghanistan qualify for the Super Four stage, they will take the slot of the team knocked out (Pakistan or India in Group A and Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Group B).The only Super Fours match listed in the draft schedule to be played in Pakistan is on September 6 between A1 and B2. In case both Pakistan and India advance to the Super Four stage, they will play again on September 10 in Kandy. Dambulla is the other Sri Lankan venue listed to host three matches in the Super 4s stage.

Reece Topley on the comeback trail with World Cup call-up in his sights

Fast bowler set for Surrey and Hundred returns after winter of freak injuries

Reece Topley is expected to make a playing comeback for Surrey in a 50-over contest against Suffolk next week, ahead of a full stint with Northern Superchargers in the Hundred, as he begins his comeback from a cruel run of injuries that derailed his participation in both the T20 World Cup in Australia last year and the IPL.Topley, 29, travelled to Australia in October expecting to play a key new-ball role in what turned out to be a triumphant tournament for England, who went on to become the only men’s white-ball team to hold the 50- and 20-over World Cups concurrently.Instead, he stepped on a boundary marker while warming up ahead of a practice match against Pakistan in Brisbane, and had to fly home from the tournament for ankle surgery. And then, having been signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 1.9 crore (£190,000 approx.) for his maiden IPL stint, Topley bowled just two overs in his opening match against Mumbai Indians before landing heavily in the outfield and suffering a dislocated right shoulder.Related

“I knew I was going home,” Topley said, recalling the incident at the Chinnaswamy in early April. “When I was sat in Bangalore with my humerus bone in front of my pec, I was just like, ‘wow, how quickly can I get home to have surgery?’ It wasn’t like I was going to hang around or whatever. It was just, like, let’s just get out of here.”Now, however, he’s on the comeback trail, and given his extraordinary physical attributes – a 6’7” frame capable of generating pace, swing and bounce from an awkward left-arm angle – his recovery is sure to be monitored closely by the England selectors, as their attentions switch from the ongoing Ashes to the white-ball series against Ireland and New Zealand in September, ahead of this winter’s defence of the 50-over World Cup in India.Reece Topley dislocated his right shoulder after diving awkwardly on his IPL debut•BCCI

“The Hundred is almost like end-stage rehab, I guess,” Topley said at the launch of the KP Snacks community cricket pitches initiative in Tottenham. “Obviously I’ll look to put in some good performances and I’ll want to do well for Superchargers because we’ve got a great squad that wants to go all the way.”But then, obviously, you got New Zealand and Ireland,” he added. “Those games will be quite pivotal in the lead-up to the World Cup. I know that the conditions are slightly different, but 50 overs is something we don’t play a lot of anymore, so that game-time in an ODI will be massively important. So I’ll look to hopefully play those, and get up to speed as soon as possible.”Almost exactly 12 months ago, Topley was at the very top of his game – most notably with a remarkable haul of 6 for 24 against India at Lord’s, the best figures ever recorded by an England bowler in a men’s ODI. He blew away India’s top-order once again in the next match at Old Trafford, and though England could not close out that particular contest, the performance ensured that he was in high demand at the subsequent IPL auction in December, where he attracted bids almost of three times his base price. The fact that Topley is suddenly in such high demand – especially after an injury-plagued career that encompassed four stress fractures between 2016 and 2020, and the genuine belief that he might never play again – has helped him to compartmentalise the frustrations of his freak setbacks this year, and double down on the rehab to make sure he’s ready for whatever opportunities come his way.”It has gone really well,” he said. “Obviously it’s never nice to get injured, but then I suppose the nature of the two injuries I had this year, you can spend a lot of time soul-searching and asking questions why, but I think you’ve just got to get on the front foot and deal with it, and almost take a typical British attitude, stiff upper lip and crack on.”I suppose you flip it [on its head] and ask yourself what’s going to be achieved if you don’t get on with things? I’m really excited to get back out there. I’ve bowled really well when I’ve played, so the fact that I’m playing again and getting out there fills me with so much excitement.”When you are out there, you do have a big sense of gratification, you love the fact that you’re playing cricket, rather in any sense turning up and thinking it’s just another game. So let’s hope it’s the start of a relatively successful end of the summer and winter, obviously with the World Cup on the horizon.”Assuming he’s able to prove his fitness for the rest of this summer, Topley will be returning to India for his second World Cup campaign, having played a part in the squad that reached the final of the World T20 in Kolkata in 2016, where Carlos Brathwaite famously cracked four sixes in a row off Ben Stokes to swipe the trophy from England’s grasp.”I suppose it’s nice that you’ve got people that have experienced that sort of heartbreak, especially out in quite an emotional place which is India,” Topley said.”When you’re playing, everyone’s emotions seem to be running high, whether you’re one side of the boundary rope or the other. But, equally, there’ll be some new faces in that squad. There’s a few stalwarts and ever-presents, but even those new faces have got IPL experience. So I don’t think there’s anything that’s going to throw up any surprises to anyone.”I’m really excited. There’s a lot of debate about 50-over cricket, but when there’s a World Cup on the horizon, there’s few other things that you can say you’re going to prioritise ahead of 50-over cricket.”It’s a nice run-in with the Hundred, but those ODI series against Ireland and New Zealand will be about people trying to get in the XI for October.”From a personal perspective, I’ve had some success and it’s really about emulating that, but I wouldn’t say I’ve stayed still,” he added. “I’ve got injured, but it’s been a time to work on my own game and learn some new things, because people say that, if you’re standing still, you’re going to get overtaken, so it’s about adding more strings to my bow.”KP Snacks are funding 100 new community cricket pitches over the next three years.

Big Picture – Can West Indies seal the series?
West Indies, 2-0 up with three T20Is remaining, have the chance to win their first series of two or more matches against India, in any format, since 2016. They also have the chance to complete back-to-back T20I series victories for the first time since 2017. If they manage to pull it off, it will be a massive confidence boost for West Indies, who will be co-hosting a T20 World Cup less than a year from now.Whether they can seal the series on Tuesday may come down once again to how they tackle India’s spinners, which they did quite well in the first two matches.Pooran fined for umpire criticism

Nicholas Pooran has been fined 15% of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second T20I against India. Pooran was found to have breached Article 2.7 which relates to public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match. The incident occurred following the review of an lbw decision in the fourth over of India’s innings. Pooran criticised the umpires for having to use up a player review for a decision that he thought was not out.
Pooran admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction of a reprimand that was proposed by match referee Richie Richardson. One demerit point has also been added to Pooran’s disciplinary record.

At the forefront of their success has been Nicholas Pooran, who, along with Shimron Hetmyer, has been tasked with taking on India’s wristspinners. Pooran has done the job to perfection, leading the counterattacks on both occasions. The bowlers have also been on point with their execution, mixing it up on pitches that have been two-paced.West Indies have also come out on top in the game of nerves so far: while their bowlers closed out the series-opener on Thursday, their batters did the same in the second game after the team had lost four wickets for three runs in a space of 13 balls. While the likes of Rovman Powell and Hetmyer have offered Pooran support with the bat, West Indies will expect more runs from their top three.Related

India LLWWLIn the spotlight – Hardik Pandya and Kyle Mayers
India captain Hardik Pandya has exuded cool-guy energy despite the losses. “It is what it is,” he said, rather philosophically, after their loss on Sunday. While he’s found his bowling rhythm, his batting has not reached its usual level, and he’s also been under scrutiny for his tactics on the field. In the first T20I, Hardik gave the last over of the powerplay to Axar Patel, despite the in-form and left-handed Pooran’s presence in the middle; that over ended up costing 14 runs. In the second T20I, Hardik did not bowl out his best bowler – Yuzvendra Chahal – during a nail-biting chase when West Indies’ lower order was struggling. The constant presence of left-handers at the crease also meant Axar ended up playing as a pure batter in the second T20I, after being taken for 22 runs in two overs in the first game.Ishan Kishan and Ravi Bishnoi might be under pressure to keep their places in India’s XI•AFP/Getty Images

Kyle Mayers had a superb IPL season, but he’s not been able to replicate that form while playing for West Indies. After a middling ODI series, he’s made 1 and 15 in the first two T20Is. His T20I average is currently 20.75. West Indies have continued to show faith in him despite this, and he will hope to contribute consistently in the top order, which has been one of the team’s weak links in this series.Team news – Will India bring in Yashasvi Jaiswal?
The hosts are unlikely to make too many changes to their winning combination.West Indies (probable): 1 Brandon King, 2 Kyle Mayers, 3 Johnson Charles (wk), 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Rovman Powell (capt), 7 Jason Holder, 8 Romario Shepherd, 9 Akeal Hosein, 10 Alzarri Joseph, 11 Obed McCoyWill India consider bringing in Yashasvi Jaiswal to lengthen their batting? They could bring him in for Ishan Kishan, who has averaged 12.12 in eight T20Is since the start of this year, considering they have another wicketkeeping option in Sanju Samson. India may also want to bring back Kuldeep Yadav – who was out of the second T20I after being hit in the nets – if he’s fit.
