Forget Khusanov & Reis: Man City can unleash "academy version of Gvardiol"

It has been an excellent start for two of Manchester City’s marquee January signings. Omar Marmoush was one of the blockbuster moves across Europe in the winter window, and he became a Citizens hero at the weekend against Newcastle United with a hattrick in the first half, helping his side to a 4-0 win.

It was also a brilliant performance from new midfielder Nico Gonzalez. Essentially signed as a replacement for injured midfielder Rodri, Pep Guardiola could not have been happier with the La Masia graduate’s performance. He described the Spaniard as a “mini Rodri”, which is high praise indeed.

City also signed two new defenders, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis, who have been eased into action by Guardiola.

Khusanov and Reis’ City career so far

There is certainly an argument to be made that the two defensive signings by City in January were investments for the future as much as they are for the present. However, it was a baptism of fire for Khusanov on his City debut.

He played 54 minutes against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea side, and was at fault for a goal just a couple of minutes into the game, misplacing a headed backpass to Ederson which Chelsea pounced on.

However, he has bounced back well, making a total of three appearances and even getting on the scoresheet in the FA Cup, although it was a slightly lucky goal, with Rico Lewis’ shot deflecting in off him.

In The Pipeline

It has been an easier start for Reis, who, at 19 years of age, is slightly less experienced than the 20-year-old Khusanov. He has made just one City appearance so far, which came against Leyton Orient in the FA Cup, and he’s been an unused substitute in the Premier League.

Guardiola was very complimentary of the Brazilian, describing him as a “very exciting” player upon signing him from Palmeiras. They are certainly both signings with the future in mind, and an example of good planning from City.

However, perhaps they were not additions that were needed, given some of the talent in the City academy. In particular, there is an exciting defensive talent Guardiola could call upon.

The talented defender in City’s academy

One of the best up-and-coming prospects in City’s academy is centre-back Stephen Mfuni. The 17-year-old, who has made a real impression this season, is able to play both centre-back and left-back.

This has led to football analyst Ben Mattinson describing him as the “academy version [Josko] Gvardiol”. The Croatian star – who cost £77.6m back in the summer of 2023 – has been a shining light this season in both the centre of defence and at full-back, having chipped in with five goals in all competitions.

As for Mfuni, who was born in Wigan, not too far from Manchester, the teen starlet has played in several competitions across City’s academy this term, making a total of 18 appearances. In that time, he has even managed to further emulate Gvardiol by getting his name on the scoresheet twice.

One of the competitions in which Mfuni has really impressed is in the UEFA Youth League. The 17-year-old has been a key part of City’s side which has reached the Round of 16, starting all but one of their games, a 4-2 defeat to Italian side Inter.

Perhaps Mfuni’s best game in the UEFA Youth League came against Slovan Bratislava of Slovakia. He showcased his elite progression on the ball and his impressive ability without it.

As per Sofascore, the defender completed 86% of his passes and won seven from seven duels.

There is certainly lots of talent in the City academy, although Mfuni might be the best of the bunch when it comes to defenders. At only 17 years of age, he is also an investment for the future.

Perhaps Guardiola did not need to sign Khusanov and Reis, and instead could have backed the Wigan-born defender in the first team. Who knows, he could have the next Gvardiol on his hands.

Man City may have found their left-sided Walker in "highly-rated" teenager

Man City’s signings in January attracted a lot of attention, but the acquisition of one teenager went under the radar, even though he could be a star.

'I rotate strike well against spin' – Gill open to middle-order role in ODIs

In order to get more opportunities, he is willing to move down the order in Tests as well

India batter Shubman Gill is open to batting in the middle order in limited-overs format and emphasised the importance of reducing dot balls in T20 cricket by relying more on rotating strike against spin. While Gill has been a regular in India’s Test setup, he is yet to make his T20I debut and is on the fringes of the ODI squad. In the absence of the first-choice top-order players in Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli, Gill opened the batting with Shikhar Dhawan in seven of the nine 50-over matches he played this year against West Indies, Zimbabwe and South Africa.”I believe that the fewer dot balls you play in T20s, the better your strike rate will be”, Gill told ESPNcricinfo ahead of Punjab’s preliminary quarter-final match against Haryana in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. “Almost all batsmen have the same boundary percentage, but the ones with fewer dot balls have a higher strike rate. In T20s, you need to know what the bowler is trying to do. Those who bowl in a set way, you can dominate them.Related

“My game all-round is very good and I rotate the strike well against spinners. So even if I get a chance in the middle order, I am ready for that. If they [the team management] are looking at me in the middle order, then I am ready for it. When I scored that hundred in Zimbabwe, I was batting at one down, I didn’t open. So one down or two down, whatever the team needs, I am ready.”Gill also reflected on his maiden county stint with Glamorgan, where he scored 244 runs, including a century and a half-century, in three matches. He said that a good start cannot be taken for granted in England, unlike in India.”In England, you have to concentrate all the time,” he said. “In those conditions, sometimes you feel you are set, but one spell can throw you off. It’s not like that in India. Here once you reach 40-50, there is a pattern to bat. There is no such pattern in England. You could be batting at 110 and are still not set. No matter what score you are on, you have to be careful [on] every ball.””You get a different type of confidence when you do well in red-ball cricket”•Getty Images

Gill has only played one of his 21 Test innings as a non-opener. In order to get more opportunities in the Indian Test side, he is willing to move down the order, too. While he is confident of his technique in red-ball cricket, Gill is aware of his concentration wavering when he is in flow.”The red-ball format is very important to me,” he said. “You get a different type of confidence when you do well in red-ball cricket. I am ready to bat wherever there’s a vacant spot in the side.”I don’t think there is anything wrong with my technique. When your concentration is disturbed, or you relax a little bit, and then if a good ball comes, you miss it. I think it always happens with me that I am batting well and then I get out.”There is no phase where I get out after I am constantly beaten. I think it [dismissal] is because of lapse in concentration. When a batsman is struggling, he is more alert. With me, sometimes it’s the other way round. I fail to keep my concentration going when I’m batting well.”

West Indies slump to record T20I low as England complete 5-0 sweep

Hosts collapse for just 43, their lowest T20I total, after opting to bat first

West Indies slumped to their lowest total in women’s T20Is as England completed a 5-0 whitewash over them in the five-T20I series with an eight-wicket win in Bridgetown.England only took 16.2 overs to bowl West Indies out, with Freya Davies and Alice Davidson-Richards taking three wickets apiece while Charlie Dean chipped in with two. In response, England reached the 44 target in quick time, wrapping up the game inside the powerplay, in 5.3 overs.West Indies chose to bat in search of a maiden win in the five-match series, but after an uneventful first over, they lost wickets in each of the next three overs, and one more inside the powerplay. Davies made breakthroughs with the dismissals of Hayley Matthews and Rashada Williams, while Nat Sciver and Issy Wong accounted for Aaliyah Alleyne and Shabika Gajnabi respectively. Dean then removed middle-order batters Trishan Holder and Kyshona Knight just after the powerplay. At that stage, West Indies were 24 for 6 in 9.1 overs, and that would soon be 30 for 8 when Davidson-Richards picked off both Afy Fletcher and Djenaba Joseph (11) – the top-scorer for West Indies with 11 – in the same over. Davidson-Richards and Davies then cleaned up the tail to return combined figures of 6 for 7.The England chase began with a 22-run partnership between Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley. Dunkley, and Wyatt later, fell, but Sciver finished the game off with a flourish, hitting three fours in her 12-ball 20 not out.Davies was named Player of the Match for her 14-ball spell that had 12 dots, one maiden over, and three wickets for only two runs.

Not just Porro: Levy must ruthlessly sell £55k-p/w Spurs flop

Those of a Tottenham Hotspur persuasion will hope the worst of the club’s issues this season are behind them.

It’s been a tough ride, with Spurs nursing grievances relating to seemingly endless injury issues. Well, for Ange Postecoglou and his brood, there may be actual light at the end of the tunnel ahead of the final three months of the campaign.

Tottenham might be on the wrong end of a cliff in the Premier League as they look to climb toward the European places, but they are into the last 16 of the Europa League, facing AZ Alkmaar in a two-legged tie over the next few weeks.

Rotation, an incongruous term only a few weeks ago down N17, is possible. And needed. Those such as Pedro Porro are exhausted, with performance levels sliding.

Pedro Porro's struggles in 24/25

Porro has been an important part of Postecoglou’s Tottenham project over the past couple of years, but he’s indeed struggling this season, both positionally and in staying strong against pacey wingers.

But the Spaniard’s issues can’t solely be blamed on being overworked. Porro, 25, records energetic, high-output numbers. He’s athletic and tenacious, but has limitations defensively, exposing Tottenham time and time again.

Indeed, Ange watched in frustration as his side’s three-match winning streak in the Premier League was ended in midweek against Manchester City, with Porro enduring a torrid time against the fleet-footed Jeremy Doku.

With the resurgent Djed Spence playing out of his skin this term, Porro may well be fighting for his long-term starting place at Tottenham – but he’s not the only one.

Others have fared worse in 2024/25, with one particular first-team regular surely playing out his final few months of football under Postecoglou’s wing.

Levy must cash in on Spurs "passenger"

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy needs to do a lot of self-reflecting this summer as he and Postecoglou devise a plan for success.

Tottenham Hotspur chairmanDanielLevybefore the match

Fresh faces are sure to be needed, but Spurs should also push certain strugglers towards the exit door – with one midfielder flattering to deceive once again this term.

Frankly, Yves Bissouma hasn’t been at the races for a while, lacking discipline and composure. While technically gifted and a robust midfielder with a dynamic approach, Tottenham have been let down one too many times.

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma

It’s rather telling that the Mali international has only started one Premier League match in 2025 – and in that very game, against Arsenal, he was hooked at the interval.

As per Sofascore, the 28-year-old has only won 51% of his contested duels in the top flight this season, having also averaged 2.1 tackles per game and made four errors. To highlight his regression in defensive phases, he won 2.9 tackles per fixture in 2023/24, winning 59% of his duels.

Correspondent Alasdair Gold even branded him a “passenger” after Spurs were thrashed by Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, with Bissouma not stepping up and adding the punch to the midfield that his injury-depleted team needed.

All the pointers suggest Bissouma has been made expendable by Postecoglou, and if a lasting resurgence is to become a reality in north London, he will need to be sold and replaced.

Given next season will be the final year in his £55k-per-week contract, the need for Tottenham to cash in while they can is only heightened.

Crystal Palace hit with injury scare to "great" star who pocketed Watkins

Whilst they swept past Aston Villa in dominant fashion to win 4-1, it wasn’t all good news for Crystal Palace on Tuesday night with one of Oliver Glasner’s most important players picking up an ill-timed injury.

Crystal Palace injury news

If it wasn’t clear that the Eagles were back to their best before last night, then their 4-1 victory should have sent impressive praise in the direction of Glasner and those at Selhurst Park. Any early season failure has been put to rest. Instead, just as he did when he first arrived this time last year, Glasner has Palace firing on all cylinders and gunning for a top-half finish.

It’s no surprise that Jean-Philippe Mateta was once again on the scoresheet to make it four goals in his last five Premier League games and continue an excellent run of form. However, with every goal the concerns will only continue to grow over his potential departure, with his current contract set to expire in just over a year.

Meanwhile, as the Frenchman wheeled away in celebration once again, the Eagles were dealt a blow elsewhere. As confirmed by Glasner, Crystal Palace are now facing a nervous wait over an injury to Marc Guehi. The central defender finished the full 90, but felt some pain following the final whistle.

Crystal Palace plotting double swoop to sign £20m star and "great" defender

The Eagles are already planning ahead…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 26, 2025

Glasner told reporters: “He felt a little bit of pain and fingers crossed it’s nothing serious, he felt pain in his knee. He can rest now for two days.”

The hope will be that any pain in his knee does not evolve into an ill-timed blow just when Palace are at their best. With the chance to progress into the final eight of the FA Cup up for grabs against rivals Millwall this weekend, Guehi should be desperate to rest and recover in time to start a crucial game.

"Great" Guehi better than ever at Crystal Palace

As reported interest from Chelsea continues to arrive, Guehi continues to become more and more important at Crystal Palace. The England international is arguably better than ever at Selhurst Park and made sure to let Three Lions teammate Ollie Watkins know exactly the level he is performing at last time out, pocketing the Aston Villa star.

Limiting Wakins to just one shot, zero successful dribbles and zero touches inside the Crystal Palace area, Guehi helped to nullify one of the Premier League’s best in what was an impressive display.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehicelebrates after the match

Of course, those in the England camp were well aware of the defender’s talent at Euro 2024 last summer, with John Stones telling reporters: “So good, so good.

“For him to come in, not having felt the feelings around tournament football before or these kind of games, all kinds of different emotions that come with it that you’ve never experienced before. He’s handled [it] so well, his performances have been great.”

Now, almost a year on, the Palace star has only taken his level to an even greater height, leaving plenty of questions to be answered when the summer transfer window arrives.

'It is not true' – Langer adamant no cricket rift exists

A recent podcast released last week reignited tensions about the former coach’s departure

Justin Langer has emphatically denied claims he has fallen out with the Australian cricket team, adamant he is still in contact with most players.Langer’s exit as Australia coach has returned to the headlines on the eve of the Test summer, following his controversial podcast released earlier this week.In it, he accused sources who had leaked to the media during his tenure of being cowards and complained over the lack of honest feedback given by players. His comments drew a sharp retort from Cricket Australia, with CEO Nick Hockley moving to defend both senior players and their organisation’s feedback to the ex-coach.Related

Langer has returned to the front foot in the days following, making clear he had spoken to Pat Cummins and other players both before and after his comments were made public. The former opener’s exit from Australia’s team is likely to dominate headlines throughout the summer, with Langer to make his commentary debut with Seven. But in a lengthy column penned in the , Langer claimed he was attempting to pour water on those suggestions while adamant he was on good terms with his players.”This rubbish dialogue of me fighting with the current team must stop. Simply because it is not true,” Langer wrote. “They are my friends. They are like my younger brothers. Anything said to the contrary is false.”For four years we drank, ate, celebrated, strategised and lived together. Of course, I would. Who wouldn’t?”In turn, Langer claimed he was desperate to move on from the drama of his February exit, after he was offered only a six-month extension by Cricket Australia. And in doing so, he claimed the public should as well ahead of the first Test against West Indies in Langer’s home town of Perth and parochial West Australian crowd.”Was it always perfect?
