Sheffield United eyeing ball-playing 25 y/o who Heckingbottom tried to sign

Sheffield United are interested in signing a “heroic” Championship player before the end of the January transfer window, according to an update from journalist Danny Hall.

Latest Sheffield United news

The Blades are believed to be looking to sign Danilo Barbosa this month, with the Brazilian currently anchoring the midfield at Botafogo. He could potentially come in as a good foil for Hamza Choudhury in the middle of the park before the window concludes, with the Leicester City man joining on loan until the end of the season.

In attack, additional goals could be the difference in United sealing promotion from the Championship to the Premier League this season, which is why they are reportedly eyeing a move for Kelechi Iheanacho. The Nigerian is keen to leave Sevilla, and he could be a signing of real intent.

Another strong rumoured target is Queens Park Rangers defender Jimmy Dunne, who has been an influential player for his current club. He has started 29 league games in 2024/25 to date, chipping in with four goals for good measure, proving equally strong at centre-back and right-back.

Meanwhile, Manchester City youngster James McAtee has been linked with a move to Bramall Lane, having been there on loan already, but now Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle has been mentioned as an alternative option to him.

Sheffield United eyeing move for "heroic" ace

According to The Star‘s Hall, Sheffield United are eyeing a move for Swansea City defender Harry Darling this month, with the Blades considering him “on their list of transfer targets”. The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season, meaning the Swans could be looking to cash in on him now, rather than lose him on a free transfer in the summer.

Darling could be exactly what United are after in the next few days, as they look to perfect their January transfer business and give Wilder a formidable squad for the remainder of the season. The 25-year-old is an “impressive” ball-playing central defender, according to Hall’s report, and he has registered three assists and completed 88.7% of his passes in the Championship this season.

He has also shone in a defensive sense, averaging 4.6 clearances and 2.2 aerial duel wins per match. Swansea manager Luke Williams knows exactly how good his defender is, lauding him earlier this month after the draw away to West Brom.

“Harry was outstanding, and it is impossible to question his commitment to the football club because that was a heroic performance from him. He is fantastic at defending the goal, competing for everything with the opposition. But he also had plenty of brilliant actions in helping us to build-up to try and score. He was brilliant, he’s an excellent player.”

He'd be amazing next to Choudhury: Sheffield United pursuing late £2m deal

Sheffield United’s spending this January is showing no signs of stopping.

ByKelan Sarson Jan 27, 2025

Former Blades manager Paul Heckinbottom reportedly wanted to sign Darling back in 2022, so he has been a target for United for some time, and the hope is that they get a deal over the line before the end of deadline day.

Hampshire go top after beating Northants and the weather in thrilling finale

Crucial wicket with weather closing in gives county huge boost in quest for title

Hampshire 400 for 9 dec (Donald 94, Organ 71, Abbott 57) beat Northamptonshire 175 (Procter 40, Abbott 4-52, Barker 3-41) and 221 (Gay 74, Abbas 4-32) by an innings and four runsKeith Barker and Mohammad Abbas started for Hampshire, before James Fuller struck in sensational circumstances in the game’s dying moments, to send his side top of LV= Insurance Division One, beating the rain and thrashing Northamptonshire by an innings and four runs.Barker moved to 49 wickets for the season as he took three for 63, to go with another three-for in the first innings, while Pakistan fast bowler Abbas celebrated four for 32.Hampshire, who took full points from the match to lead Surrey by eight points at the summit, took the seven wickets needed in 27 overs after the morning had been washed out and the elements taken them off in the afternoon.Hampshire were facing the last day without Kyle Abbott, the leading wicket-taker in Division One, with a lower leg injury, suffered the previous evening.Fuller had joked that Hampshire players would go and help the groundstaff with “towels and sponges” to assist with the dry-up, having already seen 90 overs lost over the first three days. The ever-popular Aneurin Donald took this literally as he manned a broom to sweep water off the covers. His, and Simon Lee’s usual crew’s, efforts were rewarded with a 1:30pm start, with 59 scheduled overs.Barker thanked them after 12 balls by striking Rob Keogh in front with a ball that stayed low. That was a theme and something Josh Cobb tried to negate the risk of being pinned by moving outside his off stump. It saved him the first time off Abbas but the second time he didn’t slide far enough across and departed.Cobb would not have been too happy with the bizarre situation around his wicket. He and Ricardo Vasconcelos had almost walked over the boundary rope in drizzle before being ushered back, only for the clouds to burst immediately after the finger was raised. The umpires announced a restart time of 3:30pm, but that news was greeted with more covers being put on, as dark clouds pushed rapidly overhead in heavy winds. This was received with jeers and moans from the Hampshire balcony. However, play did start on time, now with 33.5 overs planned and after Northamptonshire bowling coach Chris Liddle had inspected the pitch, and 13 balls into the action the sixth wicket fell.Abbas bowled back of a length and found subtle away movement off the pitch to find James Sales driving to first slip. After a period of playing and missing, Vasconcelos swivelled Barker for six before a straight drive took the deficit under 20. But a ball later he was hit on the back pad by Barker and given out for 20.Abbas then grabbed a quick-fire double. Tom Taylor was brilliantly caught behind by Donald off his inside edge and Ben Sanderson’s off stump took a tumble as the ball straightened. The rain started to hammer down again but Fuller refused to allow Mother Nature to win as he castled Jack White sensationally to claim the win and bowl the visitors out for 221. If he had failed to take the wicket that very delivery, the game would almost certainly have been a draw such was the force of the deluge.

Even better than Ndiaye: Everton must regret selling "exceptional" PL star

Everton have had a fair few transfer howlers over the previous few years, both in terms of signings and outgoings.

Former owner Farhad Moshiri didn’t enjoy the success that was predicated when he took over the Goodison Park side back in 2016.

Lavish amounts were spent on several players who failed to live up to expectations, while Everton began to slide further and further down the table.

The likes of Davy Klaassen, Andre Gomes, Cenk Tosun and Theo Walcott offered little to no contributions as the Toffees struggled under a succession of managers during Moshiri’s spell as majority shareholder.

Sean Dyche made a few decent signings during his spell in charge of the club, most notably Ashley Young and Iliman Ndiaye, who have both impressed this season.

Under David Moyes, the latter is emerging as one of the most important members of the first-team squad as they look to avoid a relegation scrap.

How much Everton paid for Iliman Ndiaye

Everton paid a fee in the region of £15m to sign Ndiaye from Marseille last summer, a fee which is beginning to look like a wonderful bargain indeed.

“Iliman is a player we have admired for a long time and we are delighted to bring a much sought-after player of his quality to Everton,” said Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell after the player’s arrival was announced.

Everton star Iliman Ndiaye

“We think he will excite Evertonians and give our attack a different dimension.”

He was pursued by Dyche following his performances for Marseille during the 2023/24 campaign, scoring four goals and chipping in with five assists as the club reached the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Not the most prolific, but considering the fee and the fact he is still only 24, Dyche clearly had a feeling he could shine on Merseyside.

Iliman Ndiaye has shone for Everton

Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil were the two players who prevented Everton from slipping into the bottom three during the first few months of the season.

The Englishman operated as a No 10, while Ndiaye played in his preferred position on the left wing, working well together.

However, since McNeil has been out injured, the former Marseille man has stepped up to take full responsibility, scoring in his previous three Premier League matches, including a vital goal against Brighton to secure a 1-0 win.

It isn’t just his goals that are of huge benefit to the Toffees, as his overall displays have also been excellent.

In the top flight, the winger also created two big chances, averaging 0.7 key passes per game while succeeding with 2.5 dribbles per game, causing plenty of damage in the final third.

Furthermore, Ndiaye wins 50% of his total duels, while making 1.9 tackles, recovering 6.2 balls and making 0.7 interceptions per game, showcasing his defensive attributes, too.

This all-round game has clearly helped the Toffees create some breathing room between themselves and the drop zone.

However, might the club have performed even better if they had retained the services of a player who was sold by Dyche last summer?

Alex Iwobi, now at Fulham, is delivering some of the best football of his career under Marco Silva.

How much Everton sold Alex Iwobi for

During the summer of 2023, Dyche signed the likes of Beto and Youssef Chermiti on permanent deals, but it was evident that he would have to sell a player or two to balance the books.

Despite registering 10 goal contributions the season prior, Dyche decided to cash in on Nigeria international Iwobi that summer, knowing that he would be able to secure a decent fee for the midfielder.

Indeed, it was the Cottagers who came in with an offer worth around £22m, and he was on the move from Liverpool to west London.

It has since proved to be an inspiring one, as Iwobi has played a key part in Fulham’s success in the top flight over the previous two seasons.

Alex Iwobi has outperformed Iliman Ndiaye this season

The midfielder scored six times and grabbed two assists last season for Fulham, which was a sign of things to come ahead of the current campaign.

Hailed as “exceptional” during his spell at Goodison Park, Iwobi is living up to this praise throughout 2024/25, shining for the Cottagers as they aim to secure a top-half finish in the Premier League.

He has already surpassed his goal tally from last term, netting seven times for the club across 24 top-flight matches, recording three assists along the way.

Ndiaye may have scored one more goal, but he has contributed zero assists for Everton.

Elsewhere, Iwobi has also created seven big chances while averaging 1.9 key passes per game – more than the four chances created and 0.7 key passes recorded by Ndiaye in the same period.

Iwobi has also registered 2.01 shots per 90 in the Premier League this season, while registering 4.37 shot-creating actions, 0.54 goal-creating actions and 618 touches in the final third throughout 2024/25.

Compare this to Ndiaye’s stats across the same period, and it becomes clear just how much better the Nigerian has been in the final third.

The Everton star has registered 1.17 shots per 90 along with recording 2.53 shot-creating actions, 0.17 goal-creating actions and 359 touches in the final third.

These statistics prove that Everton should never have sold Iwobi, regardless of whether they needed to balance the books.

He is starring under Silva, who is utilising his strengths in a Fulham side that have defeated Newcastle United (twice), Nottingham Forest and Chelsea in the league this season.

Barring an almighty collapse, Moyes will keep Everton in the division ahead of next season, but just how good might the club have been had they kept hold of Iwobi?

India head coach Powar defends batting reshuffle after Pakistan defeat

Says the team management took a unanimous decision to put “younger players under pressure” and see how they respond

Shashank Kishore07-Oct-2022

Pakistan’s victory was India’s first defeat in four games at the Asia Cup•Asian Cricket Council

Why did Harmanpreet Kaur go in to bat as low as No. 7? Why was Pooja Vastrakar, a finisher, sent up the order, in the tenth over, ahead of Richa Ghosh? Are India overdependent on Smriti Mandhana?Cricketing logic would suggest that these questions are perfectly legitimate, especially after losing to a team whose win-loss ratio since the start of 2021 was the joint-lowest of the top 12 teams. When that team happens to be Pakistan, and you are India, every tactical move that doesn’t come off has the potential to be scrutinised even more. But there is more at play here.Coming into the match, India’s team management took a unanimous decision to “try out combinations”; to put “younger players under pressure” and see how they respond. Also, this loss in itself may not affect their chances of qualifying for the Asia Cup final – India are still No. 1 on the points table and can consolidate their position when they face Bangladesh on Saturday afternoon.”We didn’t want our regular chasers to come in but try out someone younger who can take that role up,” head coach Ramesh Powar said at the post-match press conference. “This was our fourth game [of the tournament] and we wanted to expose Pooja Vastrakar, Richa Ghosh and [Dayalan] Hemalatha, see how they go through these pressure situations.”Harmanpreet [Kaur], Jemi [Jemimah Rodrigues] and Smriti [Mandhana] have been doing it for a long time. The purpose was to send the others up so that they can feel that pressure, because we want to see how they react to such situations, especially when they may face it in a World Cup game. So we wanted to take a chance and address the issue.”Powar was then asked if there ever a consideration that this could backfire, to which he said, India being on top of the table – they had three wins in three coming into this match – afforded them the luxury of a… reshuffle (He didn’t want it to be called “experimentation.”)”Six league games allow us to do that,” Powar reasoned. “If this was a format with two groups and four teams in each, maybe we wouldn’t have tried it. We want to build our team for all conditions and all kinds of pressure situations. Obviously we want to win, but when we face issues that need to be addressed, we should address it.”Was there any apprehension at all of trying this in a “big game”? “Not really,” Powar said. “Otherwise, we wouldn’t have tried different things. Most players have played enough to understand the importance of an India-Pakistan game. They also understand where we stand in the league table and why we did it.”This isn’t something only the team management is thinking. We came together as a group, and thought we needed to get through tough situations under pressure with different set of match winners, not just Jemi, Smriti or Harman. We have confidence [in the younger players], that is why we tried it.”Nida Dar was off the blocks quickly and took the attack to India•Asian Cricket Council

Reiterating that this was “not a setback”, Powar went on to give credit where due. He was particularly effusive in his praise for Nida Dar and the manner in which she took India’s bowlers apart to make an unbeaten 56 off just 37 balls.”Have to congratulate Pakistan, the way they batted,” he said. “That was some innings from their half-centurion. They played a good brand of cricket, had the upper hand at most stages in the game. They dropped a few catches but took some good ones too.”India will be back on the field in less than 24 hours to take on defending champions Bangladesh in their fifth game. This can be demanding, especially given the oppressive heat in Sylhet. On Friday, Ghosh walked off the field with cramps and Shafali Verma had to keep wicket in her place. Given all that, Powar confirmed India will revert to their usual plans.”They’re a good side, champions from last time around, and we look at them as a compact unit,” he said. “But we’ve also come from a good season, carrying the confidence from Sri Lanka, CWG [where India were silver medalists] and a 3-0 sweep [ODI series] in England. We make sure we’re grounded and focused on all departments. We aren’t thinking of who we play, we do our planning against specific type of batters or bowlers. We will come back to our routine in the next game.”
