Unlike the Sri Lanka spinners who had failed to maintain sufficient pressure on Australia’s batters in the first of the four straight Galle Tests, Karunaratne wanted a bowler who would continue to probe even when hit for boundaries.Now, three Tests into his career, Jayasuriya has played a leading role in winning two of those. He’s taken 29 wickets in six innings, at an average of 20.37, with four five-fors. The control he brings is reflected in his economy rate of 2.73, but even Karunaratne might not have imagined he could be such a consistent wicket-taking threat.Having taken eight wickets in Sri Lanka’s series-leveling win against Pakistan, Jayasuriya reflected on his path to the top level.”It hasn’t been an easy journey. It was tough to come to Colombo for cricket [from the inland town of Matale, just north of Kandy], because I had no family there and I was alone. Lots of people helped me. “But it was tough. I had financial problems as well. I had to balance all that, and didn’t want to put pressure on my family either. I had opportunities to play outside the country, but my motivation was to play for my country and play Tests. I gave my everything towards that goal and have some success now.”Where Jayasuriya has excelled, is through his straighter delivery, which as for many good left-arm spinners, brings lbw and bowled dismissals into play. On day five of the second Test, he broke the big third-wicket stand with that delivery, rattling Mohammad Rizwan’s off stump as the batter shouldered arms, expecting the ball to turn. After that dismissal, Sri Lanka required a little over 23 overs to get the remaining wickets.”I’ve been taking wickets from school level with my arm ball,” Jayasuriya said. “On any pitch that turns, you can often get a lot of wickets with the ball that’s hitting the stumps. The batter is looking for the one that turns, and you’ve got a big opportunity to get him with the straighter one. You can’t bowl it all the time. You’ll get more out of the straight one if you show the batter how much it spins first, and put that doubt in their minds. Then you can use the straight one.”With that Rizwan delivery I came close to the wicket to bowl it. Usually I have been bowling wide of crease. When I pitched it wide of him, he probably figured that it was going to turn away but it didn’t.”Where offspinner Ramesh Mendis had had a modest outing with the ball in the previous Test, he was a much greater threat in the second, taking nine wickets himself. Aside from the run-out of Fawad Alam, Mendis and Jayasuriya had taken all the Pakistan wickets to fall in the second innings.”What he and I talked, with the coach and the captain, was to make sure we keep the pressure on from both sides. When that happens an end opens up. If you’re leaking boundaries from one side, it’s tough to get wickets. I think we kept the pressure on really well, and when Ramesh was getting wickets, I made sure to bowl tightly.”

The January transfer window has been open for more than two weeks now and Celtic are yet to dip into the market to bolster their playing squad ahead of the second half of the season.

However, that does not mean that there has not been a lot of work going on behind the scenes as Brendan Rodgers and the recruitment team look to add to the group before next month’s deadline.

The Scottish Premiership leaders have reportedly lodged an enquiry over the possibility of a deal to bring Aston Villa winger Louie Barry to the squad.

Celtic are also reportedly interested in a swoop to bring LAFC attacking midfielder Mateusz Bogusz to Parkhead, after they failed to land his services in the summer transfer window.

It was recently reported by Sky Sports that the Hoops are close to signing Kieran Tierney on a pre-contract agreement to return to Glasgow for a second spell when his deal at Arsenal expires in the summer.

As well as a winger, an attacking midfielder, and a left-back, Celtic are also said to be looking at a potential move to bring another striker to the club this month.

Celtic keen on new striker

According to Foot Mercato, the Scottish giants are one of a number of teams interested in a possible swoop to sign Lille centre-forward Mohamed Bayo to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch.

The report claims that SCO Angers, Royal Antwerp, Como, and Las Palmas are also eyeing up a move for the 26-year-old marksman, with Celtic also lining up a deal for the Guinea international.

It states that Como and Las Palmas have already made enquiries about a swoop for the striker, whilst Marseille and Metz have considered taking the attacker on loan for the second half of the 2024/25 campaign.

Foot Mercato adds, however, that the uncertainty over Jonathan David’s future at the club has made them reluctant to part ways with Bayo in the January transfer window, which has put the forward in a difficult position.

The former Clermont Foot marksman wants to play regular football and is open to moving on from Lille to play week-in-week-out, as he has only started three matches in Ligue 1 this term.

This suggests that Celtic will need to convince Lille to part ways with the centre-forward before the end of the window, before then convincing the player to decide to make the move to Scotland rather than to another side in Ligue 1, or in Italy or Spain.

If they can get a deal over the line for the 26-year-old star in the coming weeks then they could repeat the blinder they played the last time a rarely-used striker came over to Parkhead from a Ligue 1 club.

Odsonne Edouard's time at Celtic

Celtic initially signed Odsonne Edouard on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2017 after he had only started four Ligue 1 matches in the 2016/17 campaign on loan with Toulouse.

The French marksman thrived after being given the opportunity to play regular football in Scotland and ended the 2017/18 campaign with a return of 11 goals in 29 matches in all competitions.

That convinced the Hoops to splash out a club-record fee of £9m to sign Edouard on a permanent deal from PSG in the summer of 2018, which turned out to be a terrific piece of business by the Scottish giants in the long run.

As you can see in the graphic above, the record signing for Celtic went on to produce 125 goal contributions in 179 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning four titles in five years.

In the summer of 2021, Premier League side Crystal Palace swooped in to sign the marksman for a reported fee of £14m, which could rise to £18.5m, and this meant that the club made a significant profit on the forward, whilst also getting five years of terrific service out of him.

Celtic could find their next Edouard by raiding Ligue 1 once again to sign Bayo this month, because his form from previous seasons suggests that the potential is there for him to be a big success in Glasgow.

Why Celtic should sign Mohamed Bayo

The £29k-per-week striker joined Lille from Clermont Foot in the summer of 2022 and has only managed seven goals in 45 appearances for the club to date.

Bayo also scored five goals in 22 Ligue 1 matches on loan at Le Harve in the 2023/24 campaign during that time, which shows that the attacker has struggled to score goals on a consistent basis in recent years.

The 26-year-old star, who was once described as an “extremely interesting” player by talent scout Jacek Kulig, had previously shown plenty of potential to be a lethal scorer during his two seasons as a first-team regular with Clermont Foot.

As you can see in the table above, Bayo showcased his finishing quality in Ligue 1 in the 2021/22 campaign, leading to his move to Lille, by scoring 14 goals and only missing 11 ‘big chances’ in 27 matches.

Kyogo Furuhashi, the first-choice striker at Celtic this season, has scored ten goals and missed a whopping 17 ‘big chances’ in the Premiership, which suggests that the Lille outcast could come in as an upgrade on him from a finishing perspective if Rodgers can help him to get back to his best.

Bayo also racked up an eye-catching return of 22 goals and nine ‘big chances’ created in 34 starts in Ligue 2 during the 2020/21 campaign, almost a goal or a ‘big chance’ created every start on average.

This means that the Celtic target scored 36 goals and created 15 ‘big chances’ in those two seasons combined, which shows that the potential is there for him to make a huge impact in the final third – as Edouard did – if the Hoops bring him in and offer regular game time to him in the second half of this season.

It would be a big game for the Scottish giants, given his struggles for game time and form in recent years, but it is a worthwhile one when you consider the quality that they could get from Bayo if he gets back to the form that was on display for Clermont Foot.

Procurados pela imprensa após o jogo contra o Altos, Rodolfo Landim e Marcos Braz não se manifestaram. Na última semana, com a polêmica passagem de Jorge Jesus pelo Rio de Janeiro, Braz afirmou que falaria após a entrevista do técnico ao canal SporTV ir ao ar – como aconteceu na segunda-feira -, mas o dirigente não atendeu os jornalistas presentes. A pressão sobre a diretoria não é apenas pela “sombra do Mister” e a dificuldade do time evoluir sob o comando de Paulo Sousa, mas também pelas decisões do Conselho Deliberativo.

Na Gávea, a aprovação da limitação do Sócio Off-Rio e as rejeições das emendas que permitiriam votações híbridas nos conselhos e proibiria acúmulo de cargo no clube de quem for candidato em eleições parlamentares foram vitórias da situação, que votou quase em unanimidade nas propostas. Marcos Braz, por exemplo, já é vereador no Rio de Janeiro e, assim, está apto a candidatar-se para a Alerj ou Congresso – possibilidade que o dirigente não confirma.

Grupos políticos, candidatos à presidências no último pleito e um ex-presidente criticaram as decisões do Conselho Deliberativo. Fora do colégio eleitoral, as críticas “furaram” a bolha das redes sociais.

Além das faixas e xingamentos a membros da diretoria já citados, o vice-presidente de Embaixadas e Consulados, Maurício Gomes Mattos, tem sido pressionado pelos torcedores de fora do Rio de Janeiro.Nesta quinta, a Embaixada de Balneário Camboriú se posicionou contra a emenda, e outras estudam seguir o caminho.

LANDIM EM MOMENTO DE MAIOR PRESSÃO

O histórico time montado em 2019 – primeiro ano da gestão -, os títulos brasileiros e a reconquista da América após 38 anos logo colocaram Rodolfo Landim entre os grandes residentes do Flamengo.

Membro do grupo que assumiu o clube em 2012 e rachou em 2015, com a reeleição de Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, o atual mandatário vive, talvez, o momento de maior questionamento e pressão externa, mas não dá sinais de que irá ceder.

Tendo Bruno Spindel e Marcos Braz como nomes fortes do futebol, Rodolfo Landim não cogita trocar o comando técnico do Flamengo neste momento. As declarações de Jorge Jesus, de que gostaria de voltar ao Flamengo, não mudaram o cenário, e a direção aposta no sucesso da reformulação que está sendo tocada por Paulo Sousa.

As críticas ao departamento – que acabam atingindo Rodolfo Landim – também são a respeito do departamento médico do clube. Mas, na última reunião do Conselho Deliberativo, o presidente fez defesa ao trabalho realizado no Ninho do Urubu e prometeu “documento detalhado” aos conselheiros.

Até o momento atual, as críticas mais duras direcionadas a Landim eram por fatores “extra-campo”: a condução do clube no caso do Incêndio do Ninho do Urubu, o posicionamento a favor do retorno das atividades em meio à pandemia do coronavírus ou a “proximidade com Brasília” e com o presidente Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Fortes nas redes sociais, as críticas poucas vezes haviam chegado “com força” nas arquibancadas como no Estádio Raulino de Oliveira.

Inclusive, Rodolfo Landim foi indicado para presidir o Conselho de Administração da Petrobras pelo Ministério de Minas e Energia. O rubro-negro afirmou que “era viável” conciliar os cargos e negou que a indicação tenha sido devido à proximidade com Jair Bolsonaro, e sim ao seu currículo e trabalho desenvolvido em 26 anos na empresa.

Em abril, contudo, Rodolfo Landim publicou carta afirmando que não iria mais assumir cargo na Petrobras, devido a necessidade de um “compromisso de um grau ainda maior de dedicação e foco” ao clube.

وتابع: “لأكون صادقًا، حينما وصلت القاهرة كمدير فني للزمالك لأول مرة، كان معي فريق من المدربين الشباب البرتغاليين، وكان لدي أصدقاء مصريين عرفوني الكثير عن الكرة المصرية، وبعد ذلك في 2019 كنت المدير الفني لاتحاد الكرة قبل السفر إلى السعودية”.

وأوضح: “في 2003 مع نادي الزمالك، كانت تجربة رائعة بالنسبة لي، كان موسمًا رائعًا والزمالك فاز بالدوري وكانت المرة الوحيدة التي فاز بها الفريق بالبطولة بدون أي هزيمة، وكانت المرة الوحيدة التي فزت فيها على النادي الأهلي، فترة الدوري كانت رائعة”.

وأفاد: “أتذكر وهذا هو الأهم، كم الاحترام الذي كنت أناله من جماهير النادي الأهلي في الشارع، رغم أنني كنت المدير الفني للفريق الخصم، ولكن كل الجهاز الفني الخاص بي نال الاحترام الكافي ونُقدر هذا كثيرًا وهذا ما جعلنا نحب كرة القدم في مصر”.

وأشاد: “مانويل جوزيه عمل للمستقبل، وكانت لديه رؤية رائعة للنادي الأهلي، وعمل مع الفريق سنوات عديدة وفاز بالعديد من البطولات وشرف الكرة المصرية، أنا أتابع الكرة المصرية والموسم الحالي أفضل من الماضي، لكن الشكل الحالي لم يكن بالجودة المطلوبة، يُمكن أن يكون هذا الشكل أثر على الأداء، طوال هذه الأيام ننتظر فرق تهبط من 10 فرق فقط، وأعتقد أن هذا ليس عادلًا”.

هل افتقدت فرصة تدريب الأهلي؟ أجاب: “بالطبع حينما نتحدث عن الأهلي، أنا آسف جدًا أنني فوت هذه الفرصة، النادي الأهلي إضافة لأي سيرة ذاتية، أنا قدمت لنادي الزمالك، وهو كان أكبر الأندية في مصر في هذا الوقت، وكان يمتلك جيلا رائعا من اللاعبين واستقرار”.

وواصل: “كنت أود أن أدرب النادي الأهلي، ولكن لكي أكون صادقًا، كان عندي موقف بسبب ظروف عائلتي ومرض والدتي، ولم أستطع أن آتي في هذه الفترة، كانت عندي ظروف عائلية، كان يجب علي أن أبقى مع عائلتي، ولكن هذا ليس سببًا لرفض هذه الفرصة في الحقيقة، حينما فكرت فكانت لا توجد مشكلة في الجانب المادي، لكن لم نصل لاتفاق بسبب بعض الأشياء الصغيرة، ولكن لو تكرر هذا الأمر بكل هذه الملابسات سأوافق فورًا على تدريب الأهلي”.

وأكمل: “لأن هذا كان سببًا صغيرًا من جانبي أن أعتذر بسببه، المال لم يكن مبررًا، بالطبع المشروع الخاص بالأهلي كان حلمًا لأي مدرب يدرب الأهلي، أن تكون بطل لدوري الأبطال مرات عديدة، فبالطبع أنا فوت الفرصة على نفسي، كنت ولا زلت أكن الاحترام لكل المنتمين للنادي الأهلي، أستطيع أن أقول بالطبع 100% فوت فرصة تدريب الأهلي وضيعتها على نفسي، هذا لم يكن شيئًا جيدًا مني”.

وأردف: “بالنسبة لمباراة الأهلي وبورتو في كأس العالم، ستكون منافسة كبيرة وصعبة، وبالميراس أنهى موسمًا ليس الأفضل، لكن أؤمن بوجود الدوافع عند كل الأندية، خاصة وأن هذه النسخة تقام لأول مرة، الأهلي في بداية هذا الموسم لم يكن أفضل شيء، وربما يؤثر ذلك، ربما خسارة دوري الأبطال كانت خيبة أمل للجماهير واللاعبين، لكن مؤخرًا الأهلي يقدم أداء جيدًا والمنافسة صعبة مع بيراميدز، لكن الآن الأهلي غير المدرب وحقق نتائج جيدة وحقق الفوز في آخر 3 مباريات”.

واستطرد: “أستطيع أن اقول أن النادي الأهلي هو الأفضل بالنسبة لي في تاريخ إفريقيا، وبالتالي خسارة الأهلي لبعض البطولات أعتقد أن هذا ليس كافيًا أن يثني الفريق عن حصاد البطولات الأخرى، لديهم لاعبين بجودة عالية، الشناوي من أفضل الحراس في العالم، ولديهم لاعبين رائعين، إمام عاشور قد أدى بشكل رائع مع الزمالك، وأظهر قدرات رائعة في الأهلي، وأيضًا أفشة من اللاعبين المحببين لدي، وبن شرقي حل هجومي للأهلي، ووسام أبو علي، لديكم فريق متكامل في الأهلي، وأنا مؤمن أن الفريق سيخرج من هذا الموقف ويتحسن”.

واختتم: “محمد عبد المنعم خروجه من الأهلي كان خسارة، هو من أحسن قلوب الدفاع في إفريقيا، هو من نوعية اللاعبين النادر تعويضهم  إذا خسرتهم، هو قائد في الدفاع، لكن الأهلي ليس عنده نقاط ضعف كثيرة، وأنا أراهن على الاستقرار والدعم والإعداد الرائع للفريق، خصوصًا القدرة على التعافي وعودة اللاعبين المصابين، ربما الدعم الجيد من الجماهير والإدارة يجعل الفريق جاهزًا لتقديم نجاحات”.

Taking six wickets on the first day of a Test after losing the toss and bowling on a slow pitch might not be the worst day’s work. But with Sri Lanka having pushed past 300, scoring at 3.66 runs per over across the day, Pakistan were pushed onto the back foot by the time stumps were called in Galle on the first day of the second Test.Pakistan allrounder Mohammad Nawaz, who picked up two wickets on the day, indicated Pakistan might have got things strategically wrong by choosing to press ahead in search for wickets as opposed to trying to restrict the runs.”I think we let them score a little bit too much,” Nawaz said. “The pitch isn’t like the first Test; it wasn’t turning and the pitch was slow. I think we would have been better served by squeezing the score rather than attacking. Because the pitch was very slow and the wickets weren’t coming as easily, you needed to work especially hard for them. So if we’d restricted their score, perhaps the wickets would have come easier.”For much of the day, it was the home batters that dictated the tempo of the play, scoring at over four runs per over in the first and last sessions. In the morning, Sri Lanka’s positive intent was laid crystal clear in the way Oshada Fernando played, scoring 50 off 70 balls including three sixes off the spinners. In the final session, even when Naseem Shah threatened to burst through the lower order with a late new-ball wicket, Pakistan went searching, and Niroshan Dickwella’s unbeaten 43-ball 42 kept the scoring rate sprightly.Nawaz singled out Oshada for praise, but it wasn’t as if Pakistan had no chances. Late in the second and third sessions, two straightforward catches were put down, reprieving Angelo Mathews and Niroshan Dickwella respectively. Pakistan captain Babar Azam was responsible for shelling both chances, leaving Nawaz to rue what might have been.”In cricket, anyone can drop catches,” Nawaz said. “It’s very rare that it happens to Babar, but if those catches had been taken then we might have been able to restrict them to a lower score. Oshada attacked the spinners in the morning and the scoring happened quickly, and then when Chandimal and Mathews struck up a partnership, that was very effective for them.”I think it could still be a spinner’s game, because I expect the pitch behaviour to change on the third and fourth day. In the second innings, the spinners will be more effective.”

Sunderland are now “pushing” to sign a “fantastic” striker, with the deal to sign Westerlo’s Matija Frigan showing no signs of progress, according to a journalist.

Frigan deal at a standstill

With Regis Le Bris determined to bring in a new striker this month, Frigan emerged as a major target, and there were signs the 21-year-old was keen on a move to the Stadium of Light, having agreed personal terms on a move to the Championship.

However, the deal now appears to be at a standstill, and the Black Cats have started to look at other options to bolster their attack, including Preston North End’s Emil Riis. The Championship promotion-hopefuls were also in the race to sign Leicester City’s Tom Cannon, but fellow second-tier side Sheffield United have now completed a permanent deal, meaning Le Bris’ side have started to look at other strikers.

Le Bris has recently explained the type of profile he is looking for in attack, saying: “Obviously, in an ideal world, we would like to have (forward) players who are tall and fast, with a good technique and good finishing. In a perfect world, you want someone who can do everything.”

With the Frigan deal stalling, a new target who could tick a lot of boxes for Le Bris has now entered the frame, according to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna, who revealed on X that Sunderland are now “pushing” to sign Ajax’s Chuba Akpom.

There may be competition for the £27k-per-week forward’s signature, however, as Ligue 1 sides Lille and Lens have expressed interest over the past few weeks.

Akpom could boost Black Cats' promotion hopes

The former Middlesbrough man was prolific in his final season in the Championship, scoring 28 goals in 38 games, and since then he has gone on to prove himself in the Netherlands with Ajax, with the 29-year-old showing signs of year-on-year development.

With Le Bris keen on a striker capable of doing everything, there are signs the Ajax forward could be the perfect signing, having been lauded for his all-round game by Michael Carrick after hitting 20 league goals for Boro.

“It’s a terrific achievement. It’s not easy to score that many goals. He’s scored all different type of goals for us since I’ve been here. I thought his performance was fantastic. He gets credit for his goals but his performance all-round was terrific.”

With Sunderland just four points off the automatic promotion places, it is vital they capitalise on this opportunity to return to the Premier League, so signing a player with a proven Championship pedigree is a very smart move.

As such, Akpom should be the Black Cats’ priority target heading into the final week of the January transfer window, rather than Frigan, who is unproven in a major league.
