Imagine him & Stansfield: Birmingham could re-sign "special" Anderson rival

Birmingham City will be aiming to keep up their flawless December right until the very close of the busy month, having picked up a stunning five victories from five so far.

Their last win in League One was a comfortable 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers which even saw opposition manager Matt Taylor lose his job.

Away from that unfortunate manager casualty, Jay Stansfield stood out once more for the promotion chasing Blues in this contest, as the ex-Fulham man scored yet again for Chris Davies’ side.

Standout Birmingham players in attack

Stansfield confidently converting from the penalty spot versus the Gas took his ever-growing goal total in league action to a hefty ten from just 13 clashes, as Birmingham’s insistence on splashing the cash on their former loanee continues to pay off.

Despite the fact the 22-year-old would only muster up 32 touches of the ball from his 78 minutes on the St. Andrew’s turf, he would still manage to register a high eight shots on the Rovers net, with the Birmingham number 28 ultimately thankful for the spot-kick to break his duck on the day.

Whilst the on-fire attacker lapped up more praise, Keshi Anderson also shone for Davies’ side, having found himself in a great vain of form of late as well.

Amassing three goals and three assists in League One to date, the experienced number 14 proved to be tricky for the visitors from Bristol to contain, with five key passes credited to Anderson come the end of the clash.

Davies and Co will be delighted they managed to tie Anderson down on a new deal until 2026 in October, therefore, but he could soon have a rival down the right flank in this potential new buy.

Birmingham could land Anderson rival

As per a recent report from late last week, Birmingham are plotting a sensational loan move for former academy product Nathan Redmond this coming January.

Plagued by injuries all of this season so far, this could also act as a confidence-boosting move for the ageing 31-year-old, who hasn’t been able to be present for one single game for Scott Parker’s Burnley during the 2024/25 campaign so far off the back of his constant presence in the Turf Moor treatment room.

After all, if Davies’ men can get Redmond back to his best away from these unfortunate injury issues piling up, he would be a statement coup for League One and an upgrade on Anderson.

Only a couple of campaigns back, the 5 foot 8 winger would impressively pick up 12 total goal contributions for Beskitas after venturing out to Turkey, having once also been a regular in many a Premier League side past his early footballing education at Birmingham.

Looking at the table above, Redmond would also amass a weighty 90 goal contributions playing for both Norwich and Southampton, with Ralph Hassenhuttl even labelling the tricky attacker as “special” when the pair worked together at St. Mary’s.

Whilst his woes at Burnley will make the Blues feel somewhat cautious about picking back up their ex-star, his ability to also play down the left as well as the right will make him an even more worthwhile asset to have around, with the 31-year-old perhaps linking up with Stansfield to devastating effect if he can find his mojo again.

Davies has managed to get the maximum out of the more seasoned heads in this squad – with seven league goals bagged from 31-year-old Alfie May as a focal point in attack – and Redmond will hope the Birmingham manager can have the same impact on him if a move is finalised.

The one-time England senior international could also feel there’s unfinished business for him at St. Andrew’s, with Birmingham’s promotion chances no doubt boosted by their former homegrown ace rejoining.

Azhar Ali, Jack Haynes put Leicestershire to the sword in record 281-run stand

Worcestershire 456 for 3 (Ali 202*, Haynes 127) lead Leicestershire 148 (Barnard 3-45) by 308 runsAzhar Ali scored a superb double-hundred as he and fellow centurion Jack Haynes rewrote the record books on day two of the LV=Insurance County Championship match with Leicestershire at New Road.Pakistan Test batter Azhar and former England Under-19 batter Haynes put on 281 in 78 overs for the third wicket – a record partnership for any wicket against Leicestershire. It surpassed the 278 by Cyril Walters and HHIH ‘Doc’ Gibbons at New Road in 1934.Their efforts were largely responsible for Worcestershire totalling 456 for three by the close – a lead of 308. Haynes was eventually dismissed for 127 but Azhar went onto bring up his double-ton in the final over of the day with a cover drive for four off Rehan Ahmed. It was completed from 328 balls with one six and 18 fours and he then shared in another century stand with Brett D’Oliveira (52 not out).Azhar arrived at New Road after a successful Test series against Australia which included a marathon 175 spanning 11 hours at Rawalpindi. He initially found it a challenge acclimatising to English conditions and his opening six innings yielded 34 runs. But he has flourished since hitting 92 against a Durham attack including Ben Stokes, and for the majority of the time he has been in partnership with Haynes. The pair had been together for stands of 195 (Durham) and 187 (Derbyshire) before joining forces for this marathon effort.Haynes has been quick to acknowledge the influence on his batting this summer of Azhar as he has converted promising innings into major contributions. His maiden hundred came in the Durham game and this was the Worcester-born batter’s third century in successive matches. He was the first Worcestershire player to achieve that feat since Daryl Mitchell in 2017 when he scored hundreds against Derbyshire, Northamptonshire and Sussex. The former England Under-19 player has always looked full of class and on this form may soon be knocking on the door for further international recognition.Azhar and Haynes took full toll of a toiling attack and both benefitted significantly from the cut and pull shots as they provided rich entertainment after a delayed start to proceedings.Play did not get underway to 1.10pm but the third-wicket pair made up for lost time by scoring 148 runs during the afternoon session.Haynes pulled Chris Wright for six and Leicestershire were powerless to stem the flow of boundaries before Azhar took a stride forward and flicked Ed Barnes for a single to fine leg to complete his century from 159 balls with 11 fours. His partner followed him to three figures with a clip to deep mid wicket off Rehan. It took 15 more deliveries than Azhar and contained one six and 14 fours. The second new ball was taken immediately after tea but the record stand was established when Haynes cut Mulder for his 17th and final boundary.Mulder had his revenge soon afterwards when Haynes pushed forward and was lbw for 127. He batted for five hours and faced 230 deliveries.Azhar continued to demonstrate some superb stroke-play after he was joined in the middle by Club Captain, D’Oliveira. Some of his cover drives, cuts and pull shots were a delight to watch as he showed little sign of tiringD’Oliveira, a century-maker against Leicestershire at the Uptonsteel County Ground last month, also played fluently in another century stand with Azhar from just 134 balls. His own half century came from only 86 deliveries.

He’s like Diaz: Liverpool could repeat Salah blinder with £54m "magician"

Liverpool have been exceptional this season but Arne Slot will know that football is a fickle thing, and fortunes can change in a flash.

To be sure, the Reds haven’t been in the best of form recently, ceding ground in successive Premier League matches against Newcastle United and Fulham. This dip was compounded by the cancellation of the Merseyside Derby due to adverse weather conditions.

Of course, the flip side of this is that Liverpool are two points clear of second-placed Chelsea with a game in hand and six points above Arsenal. The midweek victory over Southampton has set up a Carabao Cup semi-final tie with Tottenham Hotspur while six wins from six have put the Reds firmly in the driving seat of the Champions League group phase.

Things are going very well indeed, but away from Anfield’s green grass, fans are starting to get rather concerned about a certain non-playing situation that the club has been embroiled in throughout the span of Slot’s tenure.

In less than two weeks, Mohamed Salah can discuss the terms of a free transfer with suitors from abroad.

Mohamed Salah's contract situation

Skipper Virgil van Dijk and his deputy Trent Alexander-Arnold are in the same boat as Salah, with uncertainty ruling supreme across all three thirds.

Trent, Salah, Van Dijk

Alexander-Arnold is being courted by Real Madrid, but Salah and Van Dijk appear closer to penning extensions, with The Athletic’s all-knowing David Ornstein revealing earlier this month that the older players had been offered new deals.

Let’s focus on Salah. The experienced winger may turn 33 after the 2024/25 campaign but there’s no evidence to suggest he’s going to fall from his position as one of the world’s elite strikers, with one of the most prolific returns across Europe’s major league this term.

If Slot’s Liverpool do succeed in their ambitious quest for silver this year, they will owe everything to their Egyptian king. Keeping him on Merseyside is a must, but Liverpool need to prudently search for new wide players anyway and have an unlikely name lined up.

FSG could make Salah repeat

Last month, the Daily Briefing revealed that Liverpool are in the mix to sign AC Milan winger Christian Pulisic, ready to tussle with Arsenal and Manchester United for the USMNT international.

Pulisic’s exploits in Serie A have seen his stock rise once again, and it’s believed that Milan would be looking for an eyebrow-raising €65m (£54m) deposit for his sale.

It didn’t quite happen at Chelsea for the American captain, but there’s little question that he has the talent to succeed within a thriving frontline such as Liverpool’s.

Why Christian Pulisic could be a smart signing

Once described as a “magician” of a player by writer Al Butler, Pulisic has had an up-and-down career, with that fact epitomised through his years spent in west London with Chelsea.

His combination of footwork, power and pace makes him a stern adversary for any top-class defender across the continent and having turned 26 a few months ago, he’s entering the prime of his career.

Indeed, he scored 15 goals for AC Milan last season, in his first year since signing from Chelsea for a shrewd £20m fee, and has taken his football to the next level this year, posting eight goals (one of which was against Liverpool in the Champions League) and six assists across just 20 appearances, 17 starts.

Though his influence diminished season-on-season at Stamford Bridge, Pulisic still succeeded in showcasing his capacity on English shores, and could now return as a polished and refined player.

Pulisic’s resurgence has seen him rise to rank among the top 14% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored (0.42) per 90, as per FBref.

His clinical edge, coupled with his athletic skill, has led the stats-based site to liken him to Luis Diaz, which is perhaps especially interesting to those of a Liverpool persuasion given that Diaz, nearly 28, is facing uncertainty around his future due to contractual hesitation from FSG, with claims from South America speaking of ‘disagreements’ between the respective parties.

Diaz hasn’t scored in the Premier League since September but he’s an electric player, one of the finest left wingers in the country. The fact that Pulisic could mimic his style within Slot’s squad only bodes well for his potential success.

In fact, let’s forget altogether the Milano ace’s previous struggles on English shores, for like Salah, he is a Chelsea reject who jumped ship to Italy in order to develop and enhance the qualities that were always at his core.

Christian Pulisic

Salah, indeed, scored twice for Chelsea across 19 appearances before moving to Serie A, but has of course been one of the best players in the world ever since signing for Liverpool in a £34m package in 2017, aged 25.

It goes to show that development in football isn’t linear and that Pulisic, a one-time wonderkid, can still reach that high ground that was said to have his name on it.

His physicality has been honed, and so too has his eye for goal. Now it’s up to Liverpool to weigh up the feasibility of a move and strike.

Given that certain Premier League rivals want a piece, Slot might be wise to nudge FSG toward granting a transfer move in 2025, especially if Diaz leaves.

Man Utd in talks to sign "remarkable" big-money Zirkzee upgrade this month

Manchester United have struggled to find any consistency in the Premier League this season, languishing in 14th place with 22 points after 19 games played. The Red Devils have only scored 21 goals (the 5th fewest in the division this season), with the likes of Leicester, West Ham and Nottingham Forest all scoring more.

Ruben Amorim took charge of United in November, becoming the sixth person to take the role vacated by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. Their new Portuguese manager has a very different style compared to previous coaches such as Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Erik ten Hag, lining his side up in more of a 3-4-2-1 formation.

At his previous club, Amorim had Viktor Gyokeres, who was scoring for fun. Now he has the choice between Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, both of whom have their strengths, but with the Red Devils struggling to find the back of the net on a consistent basis, another forward acquisition cannot be ruled out.

Man Utd looking at new centre forward in January

According to reports from journalist Graeme Bailey, Manchester United are one of the clubs said to be interested in PSG forward, Randal Kolo Muani. Bailey stated in the reports that Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea had all held talks in the past week with Kolo Muani’s team.

Despite receiving interest from Italy and Turkey too, the Frenchman is said to prefer a move to England. However, having paid £64.2m for him back in 2023, the French giants will want to recoup a large fee for the 26-year-old, making the deal slightly more complicated.

Hailed as a player with “remarkable technical ability” by German legend Lothar Matthaus, Kolo Muani has made 14 appearances in all competitions for PSG so far this season, scoring two goals, providing one assist and totalling just 453 minutes played.

Joshua Zirkzee vs Kolo Muani comparison

Manchester United’s striking duo have scored just 11 goals between them in all competitions this season, Hojlund making 22 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing one assist in 1,294 minutes, and Zirkzee making 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals, providing two assists in 1,062 minutes.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Zirkzee was signed for a fee of around £36.5m from Bologna last summer, but has found himself playing a variety of roles under the new coach, sometimes playing as one of the wide inside forwards behind the striker, and other times being tasked with being the focal point for Amorim’s side.

Sadly, that hasn’t exactly gone according to plan with the Dutchman hauled off after just 33 minutes against Newcastle in what was his worst moment at Old Trafford to date.

So, when comparing Zirkzee to Kolo Muani, you can see the difference in their play style, as the Dutch forward provides more progressive passes and more assists, looking to drop into pockets of space, link play and combine with his teammates.

On the other hand, Kolo Muani looks to be a more direct threat, running in behind, stretching opposition defensive lines, getting plenty of touches in and around the penalty area, getting a high volume of shots off, and even winning his aerial duels, standing at 6 foot 1.

With Kylian Mbappe labelling his France teammate Kolo Muani as a “very complete” forward, stating he is a striker who offers “different game options” to the team, the 26-year-old could be a great signing for the Red Devils, to add a more direct threat to their front line.

Gregory, Rossouw power Somerset in West Country cliffhanger

Howell stars for Gloucestershire with bat and ball, but visitors are out-muscled

Somerset 184 for 6 (Gregory 60, Rossouw 54) beat Gloucestershire 177 for 8 (Higgins 43, Howell 42, Siddle 3-30) by seven runs Rapid half-centuries from Rilee Rossouw and Lewis Gregory paved the way for Somerset to clinch a Vitality Blast double over arch-rivals Gloucestershire with a seven-run win at a packed Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton. On a sweltering evening, the hosts recovered from a slow start to run up 184 for six, Rossouw smacking 54 off 45 balls, with three sixes and five fours, while Gregory hammered 60 from 36 deliveries, clearing the ropes five times.Mohammad Amir (two for 25) and Benny Howell (two for 31) were the pick of the bowlers for Gloucestershire, who made a promising start in reply, but were eventually restricted to 177 for eight.Ryan Higgins hit 43 and Howell 42, but the visitors lost their way in mid-innings. Peter Siddle claimed three for 30 and Roelof van der Merwe one for 31All the talk before the game was about 200 being a par score on a white-looking pitch. But it gripped slightly to give the bowlers on both sides hope.Somerset soon found that to their cost as Will Smeed swung at the first two deliveries of the game from Amir without making contact and edged the third to slip. The Pakistan left-arm seamer went on to complete a wicket-maiden and far from making a fast start, the home side were becalmed on four for one at the end of the third over.Tom Banton and Rossouw than upped the pace, only for Banton to fall for 23 in the sixth over, bowled by Glenn Phillips, which ended with Somerset 43 for two.Tom Abell offered a tame caught and bowled to Howell, who bowled with typically clever variation of pace, line and length.Tom Lammonby fell to an ugly shot off Zak Chappell and at the halfway point of their innings his side had posted only 69 for four.Rossouw cut loose with two sixes and a four off Higgins in going to a 33-ball fifty. But when he fell to Howell in the 13th over, Somerset needed a hero. They found one in Gregory, fresh from a confidence-boosting LV= Insurance County Championship century against Surrey. The all-rounder cleared the ropes off Tom Smith, Chappell, Howell and Matt Taylor, whose 19th over cost 23, to boost what was looking a below-par score. The highlight of Gloucestershire’s fielding was stunning one-handed boundary catch by Miles Hammond to dismiss Ben Green.Hammond soon signalled his side’s intentions with the bat, hoisting the first ball of their reply from Siddle over mid-wicket for six.Somerset appeared to have learned little about the left-handed opener’s relish for scoring in that area from the reverse fixture eight days earlier and soon he was finding it again for another six off Gregory.Ultimately, it proved Hammond’s downfall as, on 19, he miscued a catch to wicketkeeper Banton off Jack Brooks. But by then Gloucestershire had raced to 33 off 3.1 overs. At the end of the six-over powerplay, the visitors had 51 for one on the board and looked well-placed.But Somerset then applied the sort of mid-innings squeeze their opponents have been so effective at over the years, spinners van der Merwe and Goldsworthy sharing six overs for just 42 runs.James Bracey (30), Glenn Phillips, Ian Cockbain and Jack Taylor all fell between the eighth and 13th over, the last of them to a one-handed boundary catch by Rossouw at long-on that rivalled Hammond’s take.Higgins and Howell briefly raised Gloucestershire hopes, the latter hitting sixes off successive balls from Green, before Siddle’s experience saw him effectively close out the match by taking three wickets in the 19th over.

Meanwhile, it is believed that defender Renato Veiga wants to join Borussia Dortmund, but Chelsea are unwilling to let him leave on loan and will only green-light the 21-year-old’s exit if interested clubs meet his £25 million asking price (Fabrizio Romano).

Chelsea are also prepared to let Axel Disasi leave in January, and important unnamed sides are currently in talks to explore this possibility after both the player and Blues held internal talks over his future behind the scenes.

Alongside the usual suspects in Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei, who have all been regularly tipped to leave Chelsea, the aforementioned possible departures are growing more realistic by the day – meaning BlueCo may have to re-think their transfer plans in terms of incomings.

In the event Nkunku leaves, which is looking increasingly likely amid Bayern’s hot pursuit, a Chelsea move for Ipswich Town star Liam Delap could come back into full focus.

Chelsea make new approach to Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap via agents

As per reliable journalist Simon Phillips, writing on his Substack, Chelsea have made a second approach to Delap’s agents, and they’re seriously considering a deal to bring him in this month.

The “quality” Englishman’s impressed with eight goals in the top flight alone so far this season, which is noteworthy for a team fighting at the lower end of the Premier League table, and this isn’t lost on Chelsea who are very interested.

Phillips writes that Delap is keen to join Chelsea as they contact his representatives once more, and he suggests that this could’ve been to discuss personal terms.

Kieran McKenna’s side have continuously insisted that the 21-year-old isn’t for sale, but this new approach may hint that Chelsea believe something is doable. According to other reports, Delap’s price tag is set at around £42 million.
