Chelsea prepared to offer Chalobah in talks to sign perfect £70m defender

Chelsea transfer chiefs are now prepared to include Crystal Palace loanee Trevoh Chalobah in talks to sign a £70 million defender, who they believe could be the perfect defender for Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea targeting centre-back signing in 2025

Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill have performed admirably in a solid central defensive partnership so far this campaign, but it is believed that BlueCo are targeting another body for that area of the pitch.

Chelsea and Maresca ready to axe player who's cost them over £7m in wages

It would be a bold decision to part ways with him.

ByBen Browning Nov 4, 2024

In terms of back-ups, Maresca already has Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo at his disposal, but there are doubts over the former’s suitability.

The Frenchman has played just 37 Premier League minutes this term, a cameo in their defeat at Liverpool, and has even failed to make four matchday squads out of their opening 10 top flight matches.

Some uncertainty surrounds the £90,000-per-week defender and his future at Stamford Bridge, with some reports suggesting Badiashile could be sold by Chelsea at the turn of the year.

It is worth noting that respected transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has since moved to pour cold water over Badiashile’s possible departure from west London, claiming the ex-Monaco man is highly thought of.

However, that hasn’t stopped Chelsea from looking at the market for new central defensive options. Reliable reporter Simon Phillips, who has sources at Cobham, says that Chelsea have been targeting centre-backs from South America.

Phillips has also claimed that Chelsea are expected to sign a new defender “very soon”, so this could spell bad news for Badiashile who is already struggling for a regular starting place ahead of Colwill and Fofana.

One potentially brilliant name linked with a move to the club is Nottingham Forest star Murillo. The Brazilian has been a regular in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, playing a key role in their exceptional beginning to the campaign and starting all 10 of their opening matches.

Chelsea prepared to offer Chalobah in talks to sign Murillo

According to reports out of Spain, the 22-year-old remains a target for Maresca’s side, and they could float a makeweight to Forest in exchange.

Chelsea are prepared to offer Chalobah in talks to sign Murillo, who Forest reportedly value at around £70 million. The versatile 25-year-old has started four league games for lowly Palace, and it is unclear whether they will attempt to sign him permanently once his loan spell concludes.

There is no option or obligation to buy in Palace’s temporary deal for Chalobah, so he appears set to return to his boyhood club as things stand. He doesn’t appear to have a future under Maresca, so perhaps Chelsea could gift him permanent new surroundings whilst securing an immediate upgrade in Murillo simultaneously.

It is added that Chelsea believe Murillo fits perfectly into Maresca’s system, so they clearly rate him highly.

West Ham wanted to sign "unplayable" star who’s outscoring Bowen by a mile

West Ham United spent around £120m in the 2023/24 season, bringing five permanent signings to the club, and one loan deal for Kalvin Phillips in the January window.

This was also the same summer Declan Rice was sold to Arsenal for £105m, giving the club that conundrum to replace his midfield output in the team.

The Hammers’ biggest signing of the summer was Mohammed Kudus, signing from Ajax for a fee of around £38m. Since joining, the 24-year-old has made 55 appearances, scoring 16 goals and providing seven assists.

But there was one signing that the Hammers didn’t make in the summer of 2023/24 – one they were heavily linked with – and he’s now outscoring both Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio combined.

Bowen & Antonio's form this season

So far this season, Bowen is leading the way for West Ham, scoring four goals and providing two assists in 13 games so far.

The Hammers captain scored 20 goals last term and their lack of goals from a recognised striker has meant the club rely more on their wide men for attacking output.

Antonio has only got one goal and one assist in his 12 appearances as the 34-year-old still struggles to provide consistent output through the middle, despite his hard work and overall impact on the team. Last season, the Jamaican striker only netted seven times in 32 games, far behind their star man in Bowen.

Unfortunately for the Irons, the man they missed out on last summer not only scored more than Bowen and Antonio combined in 2023/24 but is also outscoring them combined in 2024/25 with data analyst Ben Mattinson having labelled the “on fire” striker when analysing potential strikers for the club.

The striker West Ham could have signed

Reports in June 2023 linked Viktor Gyokeres with a move to West Ham from Coventry, with senior officials allegedly entering negotiations.

David Moyes appeared to be a big fan of Gyokeres, and the Hammers could have made a move in that summer.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

But fast-forward a tad and the 26-year-old made a move to Portuguese side, Sporting CP, for a fee of around £20m, becoming Coventry’s record sale.

In his first season in Lisbon, Gyokeres more than lived up to his billing of an “unplayable” poacher – as dubbed by former teammate Maxime Biamou – scoring a whopping 43 goals and providing 15 assists in 50 appearances, firing Sporting to the title.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

Now in his second year, the Sweden international has started in the same red-hot goalscoring form, netting 23 times in 17 appearances, also providing four assists, totalling 1,436 minutes played. This is more than three times the output of Bowen and Antonio combined in this campaign.

The Swedish striker has a complete skillset, with the ability to run the channels, carry the ball himself, link play and create for others, as well as, of course, finishing chances at an exceptionally high ratio. Just look at his hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League last week; it’s superb stuff.

Gyokeres betters Antonio in all but one metric analysed above, with the 34-year-old completing 0.15 more progressive passes per 90, but when you put these stats side by side, you can really see how Gyokeres and Bowen would have complemented each other, and West Ham fans will wonder what could have been.

'It's hurting, and it's hurting badly' – Pollard places blame on batting group after defeat to Ireland

Despite result, West Indies captain is pleased with the performances of Odean Smith, Romario Shepherd and Shamarh Brooks

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Jan-2022A 2-1 ODI series defeat at home to Ireland marked “a very, very sad day” for West Indies cricket according to Kieron Pollard as he pulled up his batters for failing to post good enough totals.”I can safely tell you that it’s hurting, and it’s hurting badly,” he said after the decider in Kingston, which West Indies lost by two wickets.”Obviously it’s no secret. Disappointed the way that we played. Disappointed the way we batted throughout the entire series. That is the main reason why we would have faltered,” Pollard said. “We weren’t able to put enough runs on the board. The one game where we were scored 269, we were able to get over the line. But 229 and 212 at this international level is totally unacceptable.”Related

Asked whether the problem with the batters was technical or psychological, Pollard pointed in both directions, and beyond.”I think it is a combination of everything. I think, overall, holistically, I think we have a batting problem, with all the words as you mentioned – mentally, technically, being able to assess situations, conditions, and play appropriate shots that is needed at that point in time,” he said. “Again, as I have stated, it’s not just the 11 guys that are here, or the 15 guys that are here, it’s around the Caribbean, and we continue to, sort of, reward a guy going to Super50 and score a couple of hundred runs and then, you know, he has to play, or he has to get into the team.”We chop and change different individuals at different times, but I don’t think we are actually addressing the real problem. But, having said that, it’s always easier to, sort of, cast blame or put the responsibility on the guys that you are seeing. And as I said, as a leader, and as a leader of this team, obviously I can take that mantle and I can take that responsibility that we haven’t done well and that is not something we can hide from.”But as I have said before, it’s not just here, it’s overall across all formats, if you be totally, totally honest.”Even before the series had started, Pollard had criticised the West Indian players’ attitude towards fitness, calling it “an issue that has been plaguing us for the last couple of years”. Shimron Hetmyer, in fact, missed the series after failing to meet the expected standards. The problem, according to Pollard at least, goes deeper.Shamarh Brooks’s 93 helped West Indies win the first ODI•AFP/Getty Images

That said, West Indies had a few reasons to be happy. Shamarh Brooks, on ODI debut, hit 93 in the first match and totalled 137 from three innings at a strike rate of 86.16. Odean Smith contributed handy, and quick, runs while also doing well with the ball. Romario Shepherd’s 3 for 50 in the first game was impressive too.”Very, very proud of those two individuals [Smith and Shepherd],” Pollard said. “They have come in and they have shown, in the last series in Pakistan and even this series here, that they want to be at the international level. Obviously they are a bit rough on the edges – I am talking about somebody like an Odean Smith. But you can see the raw talent and… what we see around the world is that persons take that sort of raw talent and good players and make them into great players. That is something we need to do with some of the individuals that we have here. But are we willing to do that?”Romario, he has come in, diligent, hard worker, honest worker, does whatever the team requires, and he shows that he wants it. So well done to these two guys.”And Brooksy, coming into this series, getting a 90 and missing out on a hundred, (then) a 40-odd, missing out today – again, well done to him, but we need to be hungry in order to grab our chances. He would have been one who hadn’t gotten a chance and he had the perfect opportunity here to cement his place. And to the other guys – we need to work harder.”West Indies’ next engagement, again at home, is against England – a series of five T20Is from January 22-30.

Man Utd holding internal talks over signing 25 y/o "strong personality"

Manchester United are believed to be having internal talks over the signing of a “versatile” player who won a major European trophy last season.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils now have a new manager in place in Ruben Amorim, with the Portuguese no doubt keen to bring in footballers who suit his style of play in the coming transfer windows.

One player who has been linked with a move to United is Ousmane Diomande, who Amorim worked with at Sporting CP, making him one of their most important individuals. The centre-back is still only 20 years of age, and he potentially has a huge future in the game.

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez has also emerged as a hugely exciting option for the Red Devils, with the 27-year-old standing out as one of Europe’s most ruthless strikers in recent years. He has scored 135 goals in 297 appearances for Inter, as well as 32 in 70 caps for Argentina.

One Premier League player who has been linked with joining United is Tottenham right-back Pedro Porro, who has impressed for Spurs so far this season, proving to be a regular starter and providing both defensive resilience and attacking quality. Now, another individual has been mentioned as a target for the Red Devils.

Man United hold talks over signing "versatile" ace

According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg on X, Manchester United are interested in signing Atalanta midfielder Ederson, holding internal talks about a potential move for him:

Ederson could be exactly what United are looking for at the base of the midfield, with the 25-year-old providing the legs that Casemiro can seemingly no longer offer, certainly in comparison to his peak years.

The Atalanta ace won the Europa League with his current club last season, helping them beat much-fancied Bayer Leverkusen in the final, and South American football expert Tim Vickery has said of him:

“24-years-old, strong, well-built central midfielder. Strong on the ball, versatile, box-to-box. Strong personality as well. The first time I remember him was his professional debut really. He was thrown in the deep end in a big team called Cruzeiro, who were really on the slide. They were relegated in dreadful form and even in this bad context, he stood out, so a lot of virtues.”

For too long, United’s midfield has been far too easy to run through, with a lack of organisation and energy on show, but in Ederson, they would be signing a player who can make such a difference sitting in front of the defence, giving Amorim’s side a more solid look immediately.

Paul Stirling returns to Islamabad United, could play Friday's eliminator

Irish batter available under updated Covid protocols following negative test

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Feb-2022

Paul Stirling goes on the attack•PSL

Paul Stirling is set to become Islamabad United’s second high-profile surprise return in two days, this time for Friday’s eliminator against Lahore Qalandars. If Islamabad win tonight, they will have brought back the opening pair that lit up the opening stages of the season, for the PSL final on Sunday. Multan Sultans will be awaiting the winner of tonight’s game.A tweak in the PCB’s Covid-19 policy for the tournament that allowed Alex Hales to return for Thursday’s win over Peshawar Zalmi will see Stirling immediately eligible to compete. The franchise confirmed in a tweet on Friday that he had returned a negative PCR test. Before the amendment to the protocols, agreed upon by all franchises, anyone arriving from outside Pakistan would have had to quarantine for three days before being allowed to play.Stirling played the first five games of the PSL for United before leaving for international duty with Ireland. He took part in a T20 quadrangular series in Oman and then in the T20 World Cup qualifiers in which, though Ireland lost in the final to the UAE, they qualified for the World Cup in Australia. Stirling’s performances in Oman were not spectacular – he averaged just over 23 with a strike rate of 111 across five games. In the five games he did play for Islamabad, however, he was averaging 37.40 with a strike rate of 181.55. With Hales in tow, the pair were the most destructive opening pair during that first leg, especially in the Powerplay.Hales had also departed the season early, though in his case he cited the mental fatigue of bio-bubbles as his reason for doing so. But he returned for Thursday’s eliminator against Peshawar, with his 49-ball 62 – his third fifty of the season – helping set up United’s successful chase. The innings earned him the player of the match award. As with Hales, Stirling is expected to follow the same distancing protocols and will be kept apart from the team as much as possible, including not having access to the team’s dressing room, staying in a separate area of the hotel and traveling in a separate car to the stadium.
