A manhã do mercado!

Sky pundit shares "good news" he’s heard about Cristian Romero at Tottenham

A Sky Sports pundit has shared some “good news” he’s heard about Cristian Romero at Tottenham this week, and it would come as a real boost for manager Ange Postecoglou given the World Cup winner’s importance.

Tottenham back to winning ways after Arsenal defeat

Spurs have responded to their North London Derby defeat to Arsenal in fine fashion, winning all four of their games since against Coventry City in the EFL Cup, Brentford in the Premier League, Qarabag in the Europa League and away to Erik ten Hag’s Man United.

The likes of winger Brennan Johnson and striker Dominic Solanke have seriously impressed in that time, with the former scoring in each of their encounter and silencing his doubters after deleting his social media accounts due to online abuse.

Solanke’s strikes against Brentford, Qarabag and Man United come as a real boost for the Englishman who cost a potential £65 million to sign from Bournemouth in the summer, and he has big shoes to fill in club-record scorer and ex-talisman Harry Kane.

While some reports claim Spurs want to sign another striker to ease the pressure on Solanke, the 27-year-old is still expected to replicate his heroics for the Cherries last season, when he racked up 21 goals in all competitions under Andoni Iraola.

Further at the back, central defensive stars Romero and Micky van de Ven continue to be pivotal for Postecoglou.

The latter’s mazy run eventually resulted in a flashed ball across the box to open the scoring against the Red Devils on Sunday, highlighting his sheer pace and quality, while the former is Postecoglou’s reliable anchor defensively.

The Argentine’s excellent form means Real Madrid have shortlisted Romero as a transfer target, with Carlo Ancelotti’s European champions on the lookout for a star centre-back signing.

The temptation of a switch to the Bernabeu could be seen as worrying for Spurs, but reports have claimed that Tottenham are expected to offer Romero a new £200,000-per-week deal to keep him out of Real’s clutches.

Paul Robinson praises "good news" about Romero contract at Tottenham

This would make the former Atalanta star their highest-earning player ahead of Son Heung-min, with Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson praising the “good news” about a potential new Tottenham contract for Romero.

“If you’re going to give a player a pay rise, you can’t do that without extending their contract, which is good news for Tottenham. He and Micky van de Ven have been key,” said the former Spurs keeper to Tottenham News.

“He brings grit and determination, and that little bit of bite they might not have otherwise. I think he’s a leader on the pitch, though not vocally. To tie him down to a longer-term contract is only good news.”

The 26-year-old has started all of Spurs’ league games so far, ranking among the top five performers in their squad according to WhoScored, so fresh terms reflecting his star quality are entirely justified and earned.

While there have been some concerns surrounding Romero’s disciplinary record, he is yet to be booked or sent off so far this term, so it appears the South American is making a concerted effort to nullify that side of his game.

George Bailey and his pressing tasks in the next 12 months

New selection chief will play a key role in picking squads for the T20 World Cup and Ashes

Andrew McGlashan01-Aug-2021A team to win the T20 World CupIt is a trophy Australia’s men’s team have never won (they will have two chances in the space of a year) and preparations for this year’s edition have been far from ideal, with the current squad in the West Indies and Bangladesh stripped of a host of key names. However, in Bailey, they have someone very much in touch with the format – he has captained Australia in 28 of his 30 T20Is and played in the BBL as recently as the 2019-2020 season. The upcoming five games in Bangladesh are a last chance for the fringe candidates to impress Bailey, who will hope he has a full hand of players to select from for the final squad. If everyone is fit and available (captain Aaron Finch will shortly have knee surgery), the key decisions will be who fills the middle-order roles and who takes the wicketkeeping gloves.Test batting spotsTest cricket has been thin on the ground for Australia during the pandemic and there will be a lot of people with fingers crossed that the Ashes goes ahead as scheduled. Last season’s 2-1 loss to an injury-hit India left a number of question marks with the list of central contracts announced earlier this year highlighting the uncertainty over the batting. As it stands, there is at least an opener and a No. 5 needed, presuming the other spots are filled by David Warner, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green. With Warner being 34, it could also be that it is under Bailey’s watch that his career draws to a close.Related

Carey praised for calmness but T20 captaincy remains up for grabs

Managing bubble fatigueNo one really knows at the moment how the summer in Australia will play out although it seems increasingly likely there will be disruption at least to the early months. It also appears inevitable that there will need to be some type of bubble arrangement for internationals, which raises the question of how long players can stay in them. That is more than just an issue for Bailey, but he is likely to be the latest selector around the world to accept he may not always be able to pick from his strongest hand.Embrace rotation? This is partly related to the above point but would be a topic of debate – pandemic or not. One of the strategies Trevor Hohns presided over in his second spell as chairman was the largely successful approach to mixing and matching Australia’s pace attack during the 2019 Ashes. Whether it’s termed rotation or conditions-based selection, it is the only time in Test cricket they have really embraced a squad mentality with the bowling attack. It will be no easy task for Bailey to tell one of the quicks they aren’t playing but with six Tests in less than two months it’s all but inevitable. Over to you, James Pattinson, Michael Neser and Jhye Richardson. It is still far from clear who would follow Tim Paine as Test captain•Saeed Khan/AFP/Getty Images

Captaincy transitionHohns oversaw many changes of Australia’s captaincy, and most of them very successfully. Bailey looks certain to have that situation early in his tenure with the passing of the baton from Tim Paine to his successor: a successful home Ashes could be the moment to exit on a high, but another home defeat means Paine probably wouldn’t be left with a choice. It is still far from clear who would follow Paine. Pat Cummins is the vice-captain and is probably favourite while Labuschagne has been tipped in some quarters but lacks experience. Could the uncapped Alex Carey yet make it back-to-back glovemen in the role or does Smith return?Subcontinent challengeIf the schedule plays out as currently planned, Australia have a trio of subcontinent tours next year that will make or break their chances in the World Test Championship. Trips to Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India will provide stern challenges for the adaptability of the Test team that hasn’t played away from home since the 2019 Ashes. The balance of the side will be the key debate although Green’s emergence will help that if his bowling returns to full tilt. Legspinner Mitchell Swepson looks well placed for elevation, but can Ashton Agar come again as a Test cricketer or Adam Zampa transfer his white-ball skills to red?2023 planningThis can be filed under the slightly longer-term folder – there are two T20 World Cups to sort out first – but it won’t be too long before attention needs to turn to the next ODI event in India. Their semi-final exit in 2019 was a pass mark given what the team had gone through in the build-up, but they won’t want to go two editions without making the final. Of late, the format has run third behind Test cricket and T20, but the results have been good with series wins over England, India, and the West Indies. The World Cup may be the last hurrah for many players in the 50-over game.

Talks back on as Man Utd in contact with "exceptional" Ten Hag replacement

Manchester United are back in contact with a potential Erik ten Hag successor as they look to plan for all eventualities, it has been claimed.

Erik ten Hag running out of time

It is no secret that Ten Hag is under massive pressure at Old Trafford, just months after signing a new deal with the Red Devils.

If the FA Cup win against Manchester City papered over cracks in his management, playstyle and results, then the opening part of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign has widened those cracks to chasms.

Man Utd ace who left for only £16m is now outperforming the whole club

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have struggled at Manchester United this season.

ByMatt Dawson Oct 14, 2024

His return of eight points in seven games is the worst in Manchester United’s Premier League history, breaking a record he himself set 12 months ago, a clear demonstration that his side are going firmly in the wrong direction.

Currently 14th in the Premier League, Manchester United have won just twice and for his side’s most recent 0-0 draw with Aston Villa he dropped almost all of the signings he has made to date, with Lisandro Martinez, Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Antony all among the substitutes.

Clearly, a decision has to be made soon as United’s early blip threatens to derail their season, and now it seems that the United hierarchy are sounding out replacements once more.

Man Utd back in contact with "exceptional" manager

Now, TBR report that Manchester United have reopened contacts with free agent manager Thomas Tuchel as INEOS are “drawing up contingency plans” should they decide to sack Ten Hag.

Thomas Tuchel

The former Chelsea man, dubbed “exceptional” by Sky Sports presenter Dougie Critchley on X, has been out of work since he was sacked by Bayern Munich at the end of last season and was strongly linked with the Manchester United job over the summer.

Now, it has been reported that talks are back on, and that “Tuchel’s people have had contact once again” from the Red Devils as Ten Hag remains under scrutiny.

On paper, it would certainly be an upgrade; during his time in the Premier League, Tuchel’s Chelsea averaged more points per game, more goals scored, and fewer goals conceded than Ten Hag’s time at Manchester United has currently produced.

England role complicates Man Utd move for Tuchel

One thing that may have prompted a resurgence in talks between Manchester United and Tuchel is the potential vacancy to manage the England national team, with the German firmly in the frame for the job.

Current interim boss Lee Carsley has done little to suggest that he wants or deserves the role on a full-time basis, and German outlet Bild report that Tuchel is “in talks to become the next England manager”, which would prevent him taking up the post at Old Trafford.

The role has been vacant since Gareth Southgate’s departure after a second consecutive EURO final defeat, and the FA will be looking to fill it in the not too distant future, which could leave Tuchel with a choice to make on his future.

For his part, he is thought to be keen on the Manchester United role, but they may have to move quickly to ensure his head isn’t turned by the lure of the Three Lions.

Well-drilled Royal Challengers Bangalore look to reprise first leg's form

Kohli’s men won five of their seven games in India while KKR lost five of their seven matches

Saurabh Somani19-Sep-20211:10

Can RCB find room for Hasaranga? Should KKR open with Narine?

Big picture
IPL 2021 was the first time that the Royal Challengers Bangalore won more than two games in a row at the start of a season. In fact, they won their first four matches. In a tournament in which they have promised much but not delivered a title, it seemed like just the Royal Challengers’ luck that such an event would happen. However, the break might have actually done the franchise good, because they’ve got a squad that looks rather stronger than the already good unit they had at the start of the tournament. The loss of Washington Sundar to injury is significant, but in the bargain, they have gained Wanindu Hasaranga, Tim David, Dushmantha Chameera and George Garton – a quartet that looks more potent than the ones they’ve lost: Adam Zampa, Daniel Sams, Finn Allen and Kane Richardson.Watch IPL on ESPN+ (US only)

The 2021 IPL is available in the US on ESPN+. You can subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the match on Monday here.

In comparison, Kolkata Knight Riders’ only replacement between the two halves of the IPL has been Tim Southee in place of Pat Cummins who has withdrawn from the second leg of the league. At this point, both teams are exactly halfway through their league campaign, and have mirror-image results: the Royal Challengers have won five and lost two games, while the Knight Riders have won two and lost five. That’s an accurate reflection of how well each side did in the first half. Whether it’s a portent of what’s to come in the second remains to be seen.Related

Southee replaces Cummins at KKR

In the news
With Cummins absent, the Knight Riders could bring in Lockie Ferguson’s fiery pace. Ferguson had tested positive for Covid-19 about a month ago in England, but has recovered now and reached the UAE after returning a negative test. The other three Knight Riders’ overseas spots are a lock-in, with captain Eoin Morgan, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine – the latter two in good form in CPL 2021, particularly Narine. They have the option of Shakib Al Hasan, but it’ll be tough to look past how well Narine bowled in the CPL.For the Royal Challengers, Hasaranga is expected to slot into the XI straightaway as the fourth overseas player alongside AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell and Kyle Jamieson. Washington’s injury also opens the doors for Shahbaz Ahmed to be potential starter in the XI. Garton, who had a good outing on the Blast finals day with bat and ball, will be unavailable for selection for the Royal Challengers. He is scheduled to fly to UAE on Monday and will then have to complete a mandatory quarantine period. He remains an unlikely starter for the team in any case.0:59

Morgan: ‘We are a dangerous side, with nothing to lose’

Likely XIs
Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Nitish Rana, 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6 Andre Russell, 7 Sunil Narine, 8 Lockie Ferguson, 9 Kamlesh Nagarkoti/Shivam Mavi, 10 Varun Chakravarthy, 11 Prasidh KrishnaRoyal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Virat Kohli (capt), 2 Devdutt Padikkal, 3 Rajat Patidar, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 Shahbaz Ahmed, 7 Kyle Jamieson, 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Yuzvendra ChahalStrategy punt
Dinesh Karthik has a marked difference when coming in later in the innings than earlier. Since IPL 2020, whenever Karthik has come in before the 13th over, he has averaged 12.50 and struck at 116. There’s a sea-change when he’s come in after the 13th over, averaging 104 and striking at 171. The strategy for KKR should be clear: don’t bat Karthik in a fixed position, rather bat him at fixed times. Unless Russell is still in the shed, it would be worth sending Karthik in when a wicket falls near the death overs, even if it means he goes in ahead of Morgan, for example. In the first half of IPL 2021 in India, de Villiers hit a game-plan that proved largely successful for him. He was knocking the ball around in the middle overs, and exploding at the death. His middle-overs strike rate was just 92, the lowest among batters with at least 50 runs in that phase. However, his death-overs strike rate was 243, the second highest in that phase. de Villiers is adaptable enough to tinker with that approach if the need arises, but his method demonstrates how tough it is to bowl to him once set, which is why the Royal Challengers can afford de Villiers a few balls to do that. Having Maxwell coming in just before him also helps, since the burden of big-hitting is not exclusively on de Villiers. Stats that matter
Kohli is set to play his 200th IPL game when he leads the Royal Challengers against the Knight Riders. He’ll be the fifth to get there after MS Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik, Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina, but the only one to do it all for a single franchise. Kohli is also only 71 runs shy of becoming just the fifth man to amass 10,000 runs in T20 cricket, behind Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Shoaib Malik and David Warner. Russell and de Villiers have each been the nemesis for the other’s team in the IPL’s recent past. Since IPL 2019, no one has hit more sixes against the Royal Challengers than Russell (19 – joint most with KL Rahul but in one fewer innings). In that same period, no one has hit more than de Villiers’ 13 sixes against the Knight Riders.

Why "disappointing" Joe Willock is causing "massive frustration" at Newcastle

Reliable journalist Chris Waugh has claimed that one Newcastle United player is causing “disappointment” and “massive frustration” behind the scenes on Tyneside.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies’ season has been an up-and-down one to date, with last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton in the Premier League a really poor way to return after the international break.

Many Newcastle supporters were left unimpressed with a lack of transfer business in the summer transfer window, but they continue to be linked with potential new signings, including Oscar Gloukh. The RB Salzburg attacking midfielder is a highly-rated young player, but his current club could entertain offers of just £29m in January.

Other reports have claimed that the Magpies are in advanced talks to complete the signing of Bournemouth attacker Antoine Semenyo, in what would be an exciting piece of business. The Cherries are likely to be desperate to keep hold of one of their most prized assets, though.

Rumours of a move for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi are also still not going away, with the 24-year-old arguably Newcastle’s primary transfer target back in the summer. A record-breaking £80m transfer has been mooted in the next window.

It could be that some Magpies players are moved on soon, should the likes of Paul Mitchell and Eddie Howe see them as expendable, and some criticism has arrived towards one out of form individual.

Newcastle player causing "massive frustration"

Speaking in a Q&A for The Athletic [via Sports View], Waugh laid into Newcastle midfielder Joe Willock, claiming that he is something of a problem player at St James’ Park currently.

“Willock has been disappointing. Especially so when he came on against Brighton, and it is a massive frustration for many at the club because, when he is on form, he brings unique qualities to the midfield. Nobody else can carry possession in the dynamic way Willock does and, without him, Newcastle appear more pedestrian and predictable.”

Joe Willock

There is no question that Newcastle need far more from Willock at the moment, considering he has shown what an impact he can make in the past when fully fit, with Howe calling him “a huge player for us”. This season, however, the 25-year-old’s impact isn’t there, with only one start handed to him in the Premier League due to form and fitness.

Willock’s impact from the substitutes’ bench has been disappointing, as Waugh alludes to, with his cameo against Brighton last weekend proof of that, as he failed to play a key pass or complete a dribble during his 24-minute stint on the pitch.

Newcastle ace who left in 2016 now earns a crazy £180k-p/w more than Gordon

One former Newcastle player is earning a fortune in the Middle East…

ByRoss Kilvington Oct 22, 2024

Granted, it can be harder for a player to shine as a substitute, and if they’re not enjoying a sustained run in the team, but there is a reason why the former Arsenal man is a squad player currently, and he needs to stave off injuries and go up a level for that to change.
