To be fair, Richard Hughes did claim that Liverpool’s summer transfer window would lead toward a “crescendo”, and the Merseysiders are raising the volume at this late stage.
Liverpool have started the Arne Slot era off impressively, winning both their opening Premier League matches without conceding, but it’s a long ol’ season ahead, and reinforcements have been in nonexistent supply this summer.
Opportunistic is the word that’s being bandied about, with the Reds satisfied with the team that Slot inherited from Jurgen Klopp but accepting of the fact that improvements could be made.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot
Liverpool aren’t a side to spend with a scattergun approach, however, and though most fans feel that central defence and no. 6 are the priority positions, Hughes and co are focussing elsewhere.
Liverpool’s late-stage transfer plans
FSG love a surprise swoop and have certainly shocked a few with the news that signing Federico Chiesa is being weighed up.
The Juventus forward has an undesirable injury record but also operates across a range of positions and would add depth and dynamism.
Right-footed, he might not be the perfect successor to Mohamed Salah’s throne. But he appears to embody that ‘opportunistic’ mantra, with a reported €15m (£13m) outlay very good business for a player about to turn 27 with demonstrable prowess at the highest level.
Federico Chiesa in Italy training
Might Liverpool be better off dipping down a different route, however? Chiesa's arrival would not be without its caveats, and there's clearly money to spend, on the right player, of course.
Liverpool eyeing Federico Chiesa alternative
Chiesa enjoyed a largely injury-free campaign last year but his track record leaves nothing to be desired in that regard, and Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo could be a brilliant alternative.
Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo
Liverpool don't have fond memories of dealings with the Basque club for reasons we need not delve into, but according to Caught Offside, Kubo could be an attainable player and is said to be at the top of Hughes' list.
The 23-year-old's La Liga outfit value him at £55m, significantly higher than Juventus value Chiesa, but Liverpool could find a lasting bond through the Japanese's talents, given that he performs at a higher all-round level than the Old Lady forward.

As you can see, Kubo might add more of a complete package than his Italian counterpart, whose wretched injury record could prove to dissuade the Reds, even if he's available for a bargain figure.
Kubo, a 35-cap international for Japan, ranks among the top 10% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries, the top 19% for successful take-ons and the top 17% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref. Playmaker.
Hmm, not quite the all-scoring talisman. But that's okay. Kubo has scored 0.24 goals per 90 over the past year while chalking an xG (expected goals) rate of 0.13 per 90, highlighting a preciseness to his finishing that could see him thrive in a bouncing team such as Liverpool's
The Redmen created 102 big chances in the Premier League last season, and no team placed more. This term, just two matches in, Liverpool have created nine, top again. Running on that limited pool, the trajectory points toward an unsustainable 171 big chances come the end of the year, but it's promising nonetheless.
Back to Kubo. The diminutive winger has proven himself a deceptive marksman, now just imagine how his fruits could bloom in a rich profusion on Merseyside – he'd surely be the better pick than Chiesa; he might even live up to be the perfect Salah successor.
Why Liverpool should sign Takefusa Kubo
It's early days yet, but Slot's insistence on starting Diogo Jota as Liverpool's leading centre-forward illuminates the Dutchman's tactical thinking, expecting his system to be headed by a refined and dynamic goalscorer.
At Feyenoord, his attacking line was carried by the free-scoring success of Santiago Gimenez, who plundered 53 goals and 13 assists over 93 matches for the Eredivisie side.

Jota ranks among the top 2% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored per 90, as per FBref, so he's clearly capable of playing that part – but then we all know that, don't we?
That's a roundabout way of alluding to life without Salah. We all want the decorated Egyptian to pen an extension to his £350k-per-week contract, but he's 33 in July and will need completion on the wing even if he does stay on for another year or two.
Salah's currency is goals, and with 213 over 351 appearances for the Merseysiders, it would be an onerous task to find someone to fill a Salah-shaped hole just so.
So how about Liverpool just… don't. Kubo is not a high-class goalscorer but he is an exceptional footballer, highly effective down the flank; creative in possession, and combative out of it.
Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo
His numbers leave something to be desired but Kubo is still only in the early-ish stage of his career and could whet his tools to a sharp point under Slot's management at Liverpool.
Hailed as a "special talent" by journalist John Bunting, Kubo would be the perfect addition to a Liverpool side craving silverware and success at the start of a new era. Kubo would help, serving initially as Salah's foil before growing into his skin and succeeding the Egyptian, starring for the Merseysiders, starring for Liverpool.

Sunrisers captain says, “there was plenty of time to chase the total down and that too comfortably”

David Warner’s wicket started the collapse for Sunrisers Hyderabad•BCCI
Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner has criticised his batters for playing cross-batted shots to left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed in the six-run defeat against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai. Ahmed took the wickets of Jonny Bairstow, Manish Pandey and Abdul Samad in the 17th over, which derailed the Sunrisers’ chase.”A very big [bitter pill to swallow],” Warner said on Star Sports after the Sunrisers lost their second consecutive game. “Quite disappointing how we approached it towards the middle. Against the left-arm orthodox bowler coming in, cross-batted shots and hitting them in the air is not the way to go over here. You have to try and assess that when you come in, and there was plenty of time to chase the total down and that too comfortably. It hurts.”With nine wickets in hand, the Sunrisers needed 54 runs in 41 balls to get their first win this season. But from there on, they lost eight wickets for just 46 runs in the remaining overs. Warner, who top-scored for them with 54, compared the defeat to the one suffered by the Kolkata Knight Riders against the Mumbai Indians on Tuesday. Although he had chosen to chase at the toss, Warner did not necessarily agree with the suggestion that batting first on the slow Chepauk surface is a better option for teams.”At the end of the day, you look at the last four games here, the batting team second should’ve won each game,” Warner said. “If you have people at the end, you should be winning the game. Last night’s game was the perfect example; we almost played the identical game. There’s no excuses.”While praising Glenn Maxwell’s 41-ball 59 for the Royal Challengers, Warner also lauded his bowling unit, calling their performance “fantastic” to restrict the opposition to 149 for 8. With the Sunrisers set to play their next three games also at Chepauk, Warner laid the game plan for what his team needs to do to not falter again; their next game will be against Mumbai on April 17.”We have three [more] games in this surface, we need to know how to approach it,” Warner said. “The wickets aren’t going to get better here. The key is to execute through the middle, try and take early wickets in the powerplay and when batting it’s just to consolidate in the first six with minimal damage. We just [need to] make sure we have a big partnership with one guy at the back end. It’s simple cricket.”

Sri Lanka’s captain also had words of praise for Ramesh Mendis, though he felt he could improve his lines and lengths

Praveen Jayawickrama was on Test debut, and had played only ten first-class matches before that. Ramesh Mendis was playing just his second Test. The pair combined to take 17 wickets in the match, against Bangladesh, bowling Sri Lanka to a commanding victory in Pallekele – the team’s first win against World Test Championship opposition since August 2019.Jayawickrama, 22, was especially impressive, claiming match figures of 11 for 178, which are not only a record for a Sri Lanka debutant, but the tenth-best by any Test debutant. It was his accuracy that his captain Dimuth Karunaratne was especially impressed with.”Praveen does the simple things well,” Karunaratne said after the match. “He pitches the ball in the right spot. That’s something we saw from Rangana Herath as well. He makes the batsman play, and gives the ball a chance to do something. When you play at this level, you have to have that consistency in line and length. He did his job 100%, and played like a bowler who had more than his ten first-class matches. It’s a great sign for the future of our Test cricket.”The seniors just gave both bowlers confidence. Some players can panic at times when they come into the Test arena, because they try a lot of things. What we tried to tell them was to play as if they would a regular first-class game, and to handle the pressure that way. Praveen absorbed pressure really well.”Dimuth Karunaratne made a double-century in the first Test, and followed it up with scores of 118 and 66 in the second•AFP/Getty Images
Mendis’ match haul was 6 for 189, and he was particularly effective in the second innings, claiming the wickets of Bangladesh’s most senior batters – Tamim Iqbal (caught behind), Mominul Haque (bowled off an inside edge), and Mushfiqur Rahim (caught at leg slip). While Mendis has been a batting allrounder at the lower levels, Sri Lanka coach Mickey Arthur even before this series had identified his bowling as a potential asset to the Test side.”At a time when we didn’t have anyone experienced, both bowlers came and bowled like experienced players,” Karunaratne said. “I think Ramesh also gave Praveen a lot of help from the other end, in terms of building pressure. That bowling partnership was good, and they had an understanding because they also play for the same club [Moors Sports Club].”Ramesh can improve a little bit more in terms of his lines and lengths, but it’s also his second Test, and when he gets to 15-20 Tests, he’ll be able to get the hang of all that.”Karunaratne also praised Sri Lanka’s batting line-up, which put up an imposing 493 for 7 in the first innings, with Karunaratne himself and Lahiru Thirimanne hitting hundreds, before Oshada Fernando made 81 and Niroshan Dickwella produced 77 not out. For Karunaratne, this was a continuation of the progress the batters had made in the West Indies, where Sri Lanka played out two draws.”In the West Indies we did a lot of good things. It’s not an easy place to bat, with the Dukes ball being used. But we fixed our mindset and worked on our temperament and patience. I think that’s why we were able to make big scores in this series – Dhananjaya de Silva’s 166 [in the first Test], and Thiri’s 140. We knew that we needed a big score on the board in the first innings to win a match, so that was playing on our minds. We took responsibility.”
After an excellent summer transfer window, Manchester United are already reportedly targeting further incomings, with a long-term replacement for Luke Shaw now in their sights.
Man Utd transfer news
The Red Devils ended the window with the arrival of Manuel Ugarte to ensure that they welcomed additions all across Erik ten Hag's side, from the backline to his attacking options. Ugarte may well prove to be the most important incoming of the lot. The former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder should replace Casemiro and put an end to United's woes in the middle of the park.
Ugarte was a fan of the deal himself, expressing his delight by telling the club's official website: "It is an incredible feeling to join a club of this magnitude; one that is admired all around the world. The project that the football leadership discussed with me is extremely exciting; Manchester United is an ambitious club and I am an ambitious player."
However, those at Old Trafford haven't taken time to admire their summer business, as they have already shifted their attention towards further incomings. According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are now targeting a long-term deal to sign Antonee Robinson to replace the injury-prone Luke Shaw. The 27-year-old is reportedly valued at £30m by Fulham and could help solve another problem in Ten Hag's side.
Fulham defenderAntonee Robinson.
No one's doubting Shaw's ability, of course, but his injury record speaks for itself, with the left-back having already missed the start of the campaign. Robinson, meanwhile, missed just one Premier League game last season and has enjoyed a flying start to the season at Craven Cottage.
"Great" Robinson has picked up where he left off
Arguably one of the Premier League's best left-backs last season, Robinson has simply picked up where he left off since the summer, assisting twice in three games to maintain his place as one of Fulham's most important players.
Fulham boss Marco Silva is well aware of just how talented the American is too, having said via The Athletic last weekend: "The way he started last week, he’s a great, great athlete. He’s a crucial, crucial player for us. If he keeps improving, then it will be another big season ahead for him. A great assist, great decision to do it first-time for Iwobi. He has to really like his performance."
As Robinson continues to steal the headlines, Manchester United could close in to land the ultimate replacement for the unreliable Shaw.

Shaw's lack of minutes last season highlights just how unreliable an option he has become under Ten Hag. By contrast, Robinson's ability to create and his consistency stand out as traits that the Red Devils should be chasing sooner rather than later.

Olha a qualidade.

Manchester United sent officials to watch a 20-year-old new target in action for his country's youth side during the current international break. The Red Devils were an extremely busy side during the summer transfer window, but it could be said that the club didn’t do all the business that they may have wished to do at the start, as some outcasts still remain at the club and certain positions were not strengthened.

The Premier League side have been linked with a move for Brighton & Hove Albion defender Lewis Dunk in recent days. The report states that the defender’s “experience and leadership” qualities are standing out for them. However, this would be a surprising move, given that United have just added Leny Yoro and Matthijs De Ligt to their squad; signing a new centre-back might not be on the agenda.
As well as possibly looking to sign Dunk, United are also said to have made contact with Sevilla over signing youngster Juanlu Sanchez. A representative from Old Trafford is believed to have held talks with colleagues of the Spanish side's sporting director, Victor Ora, over signing Sanchez. The youngster is very versatile, as he’s shown he can operate down the right-hand side as well as being able to play in midfield, meaning his addition would provide competition in numerous positions.
Manchester United officials travel to see 20 y/o defender
According to Turkish outlet Milliyet.com, Manchester United sent officials to watch young defender Ali Şahin Yılmaz in action for Turkey’s under-20s against England during this international break.
The 20-year-old is a product of Trabzonspor’s academy and has been promoted to the club’s first team this season. Sahin Yilmaz has yet to play for Trabzonspor, but he has featured 48 times for the club’s under-19s and four times for their reserve team.
Erik ten Hag
The defender featured in Turkey’s under-20s recent game against England, and he is said to have impressed, with Man United officials there in person to watch and sending back positive reports. That was Sahin Yilmaz’s first appearance in Turkey’s under-20s, but given that he impressed United officials, it is likely that he will be adding to that single appearance in the weeks and months to come.
For United, Sahin Yilmaz’s arrival would provide more competition at centre-back, which the club is already well gifted in after the summer transfer window, but could be a player that is given time to grow and become a future star for the Premier League side.
