Spurs hit the jackpot with a star who’s worth more than Maddison & Son

Almost every single player in the Tottenham Hotspur squad has had a role to play this season, with Ange Postecoglou putting trust in each individual to perform.

When looking at the current Spurs side, almost all of the players will stay with the Australian as the club begins their new era, which just shows how impressive their start to the rebuild has been.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

All of the summer incomings have adapted instantly, while the seasoned squad members have also stepped up, helping the side be in a brilliant position to achieve Champions League football.

But there’s one player in particular who deserves a lot of credit for his start to life in England, with his performances causing his market value to explode.

What Spurs paid for Destiny Udogie

During the 2021/22 Serie A campaign, Destiny Udogie announced himself to Italy as one of the most talented prospects in the country.

Playing as a left-wing back with the freedom to express himself, the confident teenager starred in his first real campaign, showcasing his ability to affect the game in the final third with five goals and three assists in 35 matches.

After his breakthrough season, plenty of clubs across Europe were interested in signing the Italian, even Manchester City, but it was Spurs who eventually got the deal done, spending £15m on Udogie in the summer of 2022.

However, he didn’t join the Lilywhites instantly, instead returning to Udinese on a season-long loan, where he continued to impress, but he’s only gone to another level under Postecoglou this season.

Tottenham eyeing "brilliant" star with more assists than Udogie this season

He’s a wanted man.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 4, 2024 What Udogie is worth in 2024

Going into the campaign, the “quality” defender, as dubbed by scout Jacek Kulig, was always going to be the first-choice left back.

Udogie had proven to be more than capable of performing amongst the very best in Italy, and despite being just 21 years of age, he was definitely more than ready to be handed an opportunity to shine.

Destiny Udogie

Luckily, the defender has taken it with both hands, becoming one of Spurs’ most reliable and consistent players across his 27 Premier League starts.

Over these matches, Udogie has impressed at both ends of the field, picking up five goal contributions and making 2.5 tackles per game, with his well-rounded profile making his value increase dramatically.

Udogie is now the joint-highest valued player in the entire Spurs squad alongside Dejan Kulusevski, with an estimated worth of £68m.

This also makes him the most valuable left back in the entire Premier League and the joint-highest valued across all of Europe’s top five leagues, as per CIES' Football Observatory.

Tottenham star Destiny Udogie.

Incredibly, his value is even greater than both James Maddison’s (£34m) and Heung-min Son’s (£26m) combined, who have 11 and 24 league goal contributions between them, respectively, this campaign, which just further highlights how special Udogie truly is.

Spurs certainly hit the jackpot by signing Udogie for such a cheap fee, but what’s arguably just as impressive is their management of the youngster, with last season’s loan at Udinese playing a vital role in his progress this season.

Wow: “Special” Liverpool ace wanted by Galatasaray this summer

Turkish outfit Galatasaray are reportedly after a "special" Liverpool player in the summer transfer window, in what could be a shock development.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds have six mammoth Premier League matches remaining this season before the Jurgen Klopp era at Anfield comes to an end. Once the new manager is brought in during the summer, he will no doubt want to bring in players who suit his style of play, so plenty of business can be expected.

One player who has been linked with a switch to Liverpool in the coming months is Bayern Munich superstar Jamal Musiala, who could be weighing up his options. Manchester City are also showing strong interest in the attacker, with a return to England far from out of the question.

Jamal Musiala for Bayern Munich.

Last summer, the Reds showed interest in signing Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill, and a recent report has suggested that they could be back in for him during the summer. Young Senegal defender Mikayil Faye is another individual who has been backed to seal a move to Merseyside, with additions to the backline potentially needed if Joel Matip departs when his contract expires at the end of the campaign, as is expected.

There could be others who leave Liverpool, however, and a surprise exit claim has now emerged.

"Special" Liverpool player linked with exit

According to Turkish outlet Fotomac, Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch is wanted by Galatasaray this summer, with the Super Lig giants seeing him as a strong option to bring in. He is looked at as an ideal midfield partner for Lucas Torreira.

This is a rumour that has seemingly come from nowhere, and it would be an undoubted surprise to see the 21-year-old depart so soon into his Reds career.

Gravenberch only joined from Bayern last summer, and while he has struggled to impress as much as fellow new signings Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo, he has undoubted talent, with assistant manager Pep Lijnders calling him "special" and also saying of him:

"Ryan in the final third, as an eight, is the one who slides, the one who still has [an] overview, the one who has a first touch with his left or right to get out of a situation, out of proper pressure. He can keep the ball under high pressure and still find the passing option forward. He is a complete, complete eight with scoring and with attitude. It is the eight we searched for and the eight we got. We are thankful to our owners and our scouting and everyone who made it happen."

Romano confirms Liverpool interest in £100m Szoboszlai upgrade

This star could be the perfect player to lead the post-Klopp era.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 20, 2024

Granted, more is needed from Gravenberch moving forward, with the Dutchman struggling with consistency across his 21 Premier League appearances this season, but he has been compared to Jude Bellingham in the past, and he is worth persevering with, assuming the new manager wants him.

Depleted New Zealand face stiff opposition in India to bounce back

The series will also be the first big one for both teams in the year of the T20 World Cup later this year, with over 20 matches to go for each

The Preview by Vishal Dikshit23-Jan-20205:39

Bangar: Understanding ground dimensions key in NZ

Big PictureNew Zealand must be hurting and how. The last time they took the field they had been thrashed 3-0 in the Tests in Australia, and the last time they played a T20I, it ended in, well, a Super Over loss to England. New Zealand were leading that five-match T20I series 2-1 and even though they handed England an innings loss in the Test series later, crossing the Tasman Sea after that dented their confidence considerably. Now, New Zealand face a stiff opposition in India to end their home summer before landing in Australia again for three ODIs.ALSO READ: Tim Southee backs New Zealand to bounce back after Australia setbackThe India series will be “huge” for them, as selector Gavin Larsen said, to work out a few things: a best XI with several players injured and how to restore their reputation. First, they will draw confidence from the fact that they had beaten India 2-1 in the T20Is last year, with a similar bowling attack that is to play in the coming series. The hosts have recalled Hamish Bennett, who last played an international in 2017, to join Tim Southee, Blair Tickner and Scott Kuggeleijn in the pace attack, with Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi making up the spin department. Where are the rest? Well, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry are all injured. Another worry for them will be Santner’s form, as he picked only one wicket in four Test innings in Australia. A different format, though, could do it for the left-arm spinner who took his best T20I figures – 4 for 11 – against India, in 2016.There’s more experience to fall back on in the batting department, with Kane Williamson, who returns after missing the T20Is against England, Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor and Colin Munro making the top and middle order. The series will also be the first big one for both teams in the year of the T20 World Cup later this year, with over 20 matches to go for each.India are also without a few injured players – Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Deepak Chahar – but their depth in reserves has hardly ever been stronger. They will have their tails up after drubbing Sri Lanka 2-0 in T20Is and fighting back formidably against a full-strength Australia to win 2-1 in the ODIs. They have a settled bowling line-up with four quicks, two spinners and three allrounders to choose from. With Samson replacing Dhawan in the 16-man squad, it remains to be seen if he and Pandey will get a chance if Rishabh Pant gets to play as wicketkeeper and KL Rahul plays purely as a batsman.Form guideNew Zealand TLWWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
India WWWLWIn the spotlightHamish Bennett will be in line to make his T20I debut with 17 international games to his name already. In the absence of New Zealand’s main frontline quicks, Bennett now has a big task ahead against India’s batting line-up that doesn’t have as much experience in the lower-middle order. Bennett could use his pace, bounce and variations in the middle or end overs to dent India’s progress towards a big total. Bennett comes on the back of figures of 3 for 34 against Auckland in the Super Smash final, New Zealand’s domestic T20 tournament, in which he finished as the leading wicket-taker with 17 scalps from 11 games, and an economy rate of 7.20.ALSO READ: Firebird Hamish Bennett ready for his New Zealand rebirthVirat Kohli and Kane Williamson pose with the T20I series trophy•Blackcapsnz/Instagram

With Pandya not returning to international cricket anytime soon, India need to have his solid back-up for the T20 World Cup. They are carrying three allrounders – Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar – and it will be a good trial for both Dube and Washington in New Zealand conditions after India played their recent games at home. Both Dube and Washington could play in the XI and India need to assess if they will need a batting or a bowling allrounder more in Australia later this year.ALSO READ: India have missed a trick with their allrounder strategy, writes Aakash ChopraTeam newsRoss Taylor said on Tuesday the injuries in their camp has given the fringe players a chance to stake a claim for spots. Virat Kohli said on the eve of the match that making KL Rahul keep in T20Is too will give them “a lot more balance” to play another batsman. In that case, they can accommodate Manish Pandey at No. 5 and two allrounders at Nos. 6 and 7 out of Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 KL Rahul (wk), 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Manish Pandey, 6 Shivam Dube 7 Washinton Sundar/Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Kuldeep Yadav/Yuzvendra Chahal, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Navdeep Saini, 11 Jasprit BumrahPitch and conditionsAuckland is where the Super Over was played against England recently, with both teams scoring at over 13 an over in a rain-curtailed match. A cloud cover and some drizzle is expected in the morning and evening which could affect the 7.50pm local time start. With no heavy rain expected, we should get a game even if with reduced overs.Stats and triviaWith legspinner Adam Zampa coming into focus against Kohli in the recent ODIs, New Zealand will probably want to bowl Ish Sodhi to him early. Sodhi has a decent record against India, having dismissed Kohli and Rohit once each: he has taken 11 wickets in seven innings, averaging 16.18 with an economy rate of 7.73Ross Taylor is batting too low to play an anchor role in this format. He has primarily batted at No. 5 for New Zealand since 2018, but at a strike rate of just 119.40, he is scoring slow for that position. Among 31 batsmen to score 100 or more runs batting at No. 5 or lower in T20Is since 2018, Taylor’s strike rate of 125.80 is 10th worst (there are 21 other batsmen that score faster than he does).Quotes”Honestly, even if you think of revenge, these guys are so nice you can’t get into that. South Africa coach admits the management are still searching for their best XI in T20

South Africa players who want to be considered for the T20 World Cup have the chance to stake a claim in the next week, with several spots in need of filling, according to coach Mark Boucher. Despite the disappointment of his team’s biggest T20 defeat in the opening match against Australia, Boucher sought to “take the emotion out of the whole scenario” and look at the bigger picture, with seven months to go before a major tournament.”There are certain places up for grabs and with guys getting opportunities, it’s important that they take them now,” Boucher said. “A month or so before the World Cup we want to have our minds on who we want to take as a 15-man squad but it’s difficult for players to make a name for themselves a month before the tournament. Now is the time that players need to put their hands up and stake a claim for positions and there are still position up for grabs. We don’t quite know what our combinations are going to be and we are waiting for guys to step up.”After their performance on Friday night, which included their lowest T20I score, and Boucher’s criticism of the bowling as “poor”, it would appear that South Africa have plenty of positions to fill but the man in charge did not want to be overly dramatic. “It’s not the end of the world – losing one game of T20 cricket,” Boucher said. “Yes, we are going to have to shape up quite a bit in the next week but there is also a plan going through to the next World Cup.”ALSO READ: Jadeja-inspired Agar felt ‘horrible’ in trainingPart of that plan was trialing Temba Bavuma in the opening role, which was a success against England before he got injured, using Heinrich Klaasen – who was also forced out with a niggle – in the middle order and experimenting with Rassie van der Dussen and Jon-Jon Smuts. All those options paid off during the England series and are likely to do so again.A bigger concern is the inconsistency of the attack, who had the experience of Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada but still conceded heavily. Steyn, Lungi Ngidi, Rabada and Andile Phehlulwayo, who have 107 T20 caps between them, gave away 70 runs in the first six overs and failed to pitch the ball up, something bowling coach Charl Langeveldt discussed in the lead-up to the match. Both Boucher and Langeveldt have spoken about the importance of specialised skills training, but stressed that during a series, South Africa don’t have the time to do that.Boucher made the same point after the Wanderers defeat. “It’s not something we can change overnight. We’ve tried to work on things like yorkers but our lines and length were really bad,” Boucher said. “It’s not like they were running down the wicket and taking us on. We were giving them boundary options.”Rabada, South Africa’s “poster boy”, as acting director of cricket Graeme Smith called him, was the most guilty and had six fours and two sixes scored off him to finish as the most expensive bowler on the night. Boucher put Rabada’s showing down to a lack of game time, presenting an interesting conundrum between getting the balance between overbowling and keeping him fresh. “KG has come back from a long rest so it’s no use making an emotional decision and saying we are going to leave him out for the next game,” Boucher said. “We need guys like him and Anrich [Nortje] to come back but we also needed to rest them and that was the right decision because we want them fresh.”But how long does it take players to find their groove again? The answer might come on Sunday, when South Africa face a must-win situation to stay in the series or face further scrutiny over their progress in what has been a lean summer. As he done since he took over in December, Boucher pleaded for patience, even as he admitted that progress needs to come.”We are working really hard off the field. We understand the areas we need to work on. We’ve got to get back on the horse,” he said. “If we rock up and play 40% cricket we are going to get beaten and beaten badly, like we were today.”

Celtic lining up move for in "prime" star who’s a dream Begovic alternative

Celtic still have plenty to play for in the Scottish Premiership and the SFA Cup as they bid to end the season without going trophyless across all competitions.

Brendan Rodgers should be keen to win at least one piece of silverware in his first year back at Parkhead, having re-joined the club to replace Ange Postecoglou last summer.

Whilst the bulk of their focus will be on the rest of the 2023/24 campaign and their performances on the pitch, one eye will also be on the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Hoops already know that they will have to dip into the market to replace one of their current star performers, as Joe Hart is poised to move on from Glasgow at the end of the season.

Joe Hart

Earlier this year, the 37-year-old colossus confirmed that he is going to retire from professional football when his contract at Parkhead expires at the end of May.

This means that the club will be left without a first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, which is why they reportedly already have targets in mind to join the Scottish giants over the coming months.

Celtic’s interest in Bayer Leverkusen titan

According to Monday's edition of the Salzburger Nachrichten, as relayed by Sport Witness, Celtic are one of the teams interested in a swoop to sign Bayer Leverkusen shot-stopper Peter Pentz ahead of next season.

The report claims that the Hoops and Dutch giants PSV are lining up swoops to sign the talented titan, who has been on loan with Brondby this term, to bolster their respective teams in the summer transfer window.

It does not reveal, however, how much the German side are set to demand for his services, with his current contract due to expire in the summer of 2025.

Football Insider previously reported that Celtic, PSV, and Southampton were all keen on the 27-year-old star, which means that there could be plenty of competition for his signature.

Rodgers could land Pentz as a dream alternative to veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who Football Insider have claimed is unlikely to be targeted by the club this summer.

Their latest report on the QPR colossus' situation claims that Celtic want to bring in a long-term number one option to succeed Hart between the sticks, which does not suit the 36-year-old Championship stopper.

Football Insider stated that the Scottish giants want to land a top-quality goalkeeper to hold the fort down from next season onwards, and Pentz could be a fantastic addition instead of the experienced Begovic.

Why Celtic are right to avoid Asmir Begovic

Firstly, as that report pointed out, the Bosnia international is not at an age where he is likely to be the long-term number one for Celtic moving forward.

He turns 37 in June, shortly before his contract with QPR expires, and the veteran may not have many years left before hanging up his gloves, as Hart is set to do at a similar age this year.

This means that Begovic does not fit the style of signing the Hoops are looking to make to replace the former England international this summer, which immediately rules him out as a suitable candidate before you even get to his performances on the pitch.

Speaking of which, his worrying displays in the Championship for the English side this season suggest that he would not have been a good target for the club even if they were looking for an experienced option.

As you can see in the table above, the 36-year-old dud has significantly underperformed as a shot-stopper in the second tier, with 7.72 more goals conceded than the xG of the shots on his goal suggests he should have let in.

Begovic, who made 256 appearances in the Premier League earlier in his career, ranks 46th out of 48 goalkeepers in the Championship in that metric, with only Ryan Allsop (-9.39) and Gavin Bazunu (-11.52) below him.

Therefore, Celtic must also avoid the QPR dud due to his poor performances on the pitch, alongside his age profile not suiting what they are looking for.

Why Celtic should swoop for Patrick Pentz

The Scottish giants must now ensure that they win the race, ahead of PSV and Southampton, to secure a deal to sign Pentz from Leverkusen in the summer.

Last season, the Austria international spent the first half of the campaign with Reims in Ligue 1 before completing a move to the German side in January 2023.

During his time in the French top-flight, the Hoops target slightly underperformed as a shot-stopper, letting in 2.15 more goals than expected, but did not make a single error leading to a goal for the opposition and won 100% of his duels.

After failing to make an appearance for Leverkusen, Pentz was sent out on loan to Brondby in Denmark for the 2023/24 campaign and he has enjoyed a terrific season so far.

As you can see in the table above, the Austrian colossus has been in fantastic form in comparison to both Begovic and Hart at league level this term, with a significantly higher save success rate and Sofascore rating, along with being faultless in duels.

Last summer, Leverkusen's managing director Simon Rolfes claimed that the Celtic target is "in his prime", and his superb statistics in the Superliga so far this term back up that claim.

Therefore, from a performance perspective, Pentz could be a phenomenal addition to the squad to potentially come in as an upgrade on Hart, whilst being a better option than Begovic.

The 27-year-old, who does not turn 28 until January of next year, is also almost ten years younger than the two veteran shot-stoppers, which suggests that he has the time ahead of him to be the long-term number one for Rodgers at Parkhead – making him a dream signing overall.

Bad news for Oh as Celtic prepare bid to sign "sensational" £5m star

Celtic still have plenty to play for between now and the end of the current season as they bid to avoid enduring a trophyless year with Brendan Rodgers at the helm.

The Hoops are currently three points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with three matches left to play, and have a big Old Firm clash coming this weekend.

They also have the SFA Cup final to come at Hampden Park against their closest rivals, which means that they could still win two pieces of silverware this month.

Despite there still being plenty to play for on the pitch, some attention has already turned to the upcoming summer transfer window and what they could do to bolster the squad for the 2024/25 campaign.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers watches on.

That, however, is not limited to bringing new players in from elsewhere, as Celtic are reportedly looking to make one of their current loan deals a permanent one.

Celtic preparing bid to sign £5m star

The Hoops are hoping to sign loanee Adam Idah on a long-term contract at the end of the season, when his loan deal expires later this year.

According to Football Insider, the Bhoys are keen to sign him permanently after an impressive stint on loan from Norwich City in Glasgow thus far.

The report claims that Rodgers and Celtic are ready to submit an official offer to secure his services in the off-season, which shows how serious they are about getting a deal over the line.

However, it does not reveal how much the Scottish giants are prepared to put on the table to bring him back to Parkhead for the 2024/25 campaign.

Adam Idah

Earlier this month, The Scottish Sun reported that the Canaries have set a minimum fee of £5m on the centre-forward ahead of the summer window.

The outlet stated that his price could also depend on the level of interest in his services, as competition for his signature could drive it up beyond £5m, as English Championship sides and Hellas Verona have been keen on the attacker.

It, therefore, remains to be seen whether or not the Hoops can land him on a permanent deal as Football Insider's report does not state how much they are willing to pay.

If Celtic are able and prepared to submit an offer of £5m for Idah then they could win the race for the Ireland international and ensure that his future remains in Glasgow.

Signing the 6 foot 3 forward on a permanent deal would, however, represent a piece of bad news for current Bhoys number nine Hyeon-gyu Oh.

Why this is bad news for Hyeon-gyu Oh

Celtic's desire to bring Idah back to Parkhead this summer is bad news for the South Korea international as it does not bode well for his future prospects.

He has made three appearances for Celtic in all competitions since the turn of the year, all three of which came as a substitute and two of them came against St Mirren.

Oh, who spent the bulk of January at the AFC Asian Cup with South Korea, has played more games for his country in 2024 (four) than he has for the Scottish giants.

Celtic striker Hyeon-gyu Oh.

The 23-year-old striker has made two appearances in the Scottish Premiership in 2024, after 18 outings and three starts during the first half of the campaign in the division.

He racked up five goals and zero assists in those 18 matches as the young forward found himself as the second choice behind Kyogo Furuhashi in the pecking order.

These statistics show that the signing of Idah has severely restricted his minutes on the pitch, as the young attacker has rarely got his feet on the field in a competitive setting since the Irishman's arrival.

Signed from Suwon Bluewings for a reported fee of £2.5m in January of last year, Oh produced six goals and zero assists in 16 league outings for Celtic during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign.

In almost 18 months at Parkhead, the South Korean marksman has plundered 12 goals in 47 matches and only started six Premiership games in total.

The desire to sign Idah is, therefore, bad news for Oh as it does not suggest that his lack of game time in Glasgow is likely to change any time soon, and it could force him to consider his future ahead of next season.

Why Celtic should sign Adam Idah permanently

The Scottish giants should swoop to sign the Norwich City loanee on a permanent deal as he is a better option than the South Korea international to provide competition to Kyogo in the number nine position.

Since his move to Paradise on a temporary basis on deadline day at the start of February, Idah has caught the eye with his impressive finishing in Scotland.

The 23-year-old star, who was lauded as "sensational" by Chris Sutton earlier this term, has racked up seven goals in 12 Premiership appearances so far for the Hoops.

As you can see in the table above, his form in the Scottish top-flight has been more impressive than Oh's for Celtic so far this season, with two more goals and two more assists in eight fewer games.

The Norwich academy graduate has scored seven goals from an xG of 5.24, which is an overperformance of 1.76 – the highest in the entire Hoops squad.

Adam Idah

Whereas, Oh has scored five goals from an xG of 6.35 in the Premiership and only three players in the squad have underperformed by more than his -1.35.

This suggests that Idah has been the best and most efficient finisher in the group in the top-flight this term, whilst the former K League 1 star has been among the worst.

Therefore, Rodgers would be making the right decision, on paper, to sign the Ireland international permanently to further restrict Oh's involvement in the first-team.
