Leeds United just about crept over the line against Stoke City last night to pick up their 23rd Championship win of the season to date, overcoming Steven Schumacher's tricky visitors 1-0 on a cagey evening in West Yorkshire.
In truth, the performance wasn't Daniel Farke's high-flying side at their free-flowing best with the goal-shy Whites bailed out by Daniel James scoring a belter in the first half.
The silky Leeds number 20 was reintroduced into the first team fold after battling to be back in his manager's plans following recent injury woes, proving his worth for the promotion chasers once more on their own turf – the ex-Manchester United winger onto 11 goals for the season now.
Leeds were thankful that James stepped up to the mark owing to the off-day experienced by Patrick Bamford leading the line for the hosts, who was quiet throughout in contrast.
Daniel James' stunning performance vs Stoke
Away from the lacklustre showing by the Leeds number nine, James starred again for Farke's men from down the right-hand channel.
The electric winger was constantly wanting to make things happen at Elland Road whilst the likes of Bamford and even Georginio Rutter failed to get going, with the Welshman amassing four shots on target in the contest.
Dan James
Moreover, the slick 5 foot 7 attacker would muster up four key passes to show his unselfish side away from firing constant shots at Daniel Iversen's net on top of winning five duels in total as a high-energy menace.
This should see James be retained for Leeds' next match away at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night, shrugging off any lingering injury concerns with a fantastic display against the Potters.
Bamford won't rest so easy about his first-team spot, however, off the back of his no-show up top in the 1-0 win, coming away from the game with fewer touches than Whites goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
Why Patrick Bamford must be dropped after dismal Stoke showing
It could well be time for Farke to reevaluate who his main centre forward is as Leeds enter a number of crunch games in the automatic promotion race, with Bamford in danger of falling down his manager's striker pecking order after a second-rate display on Tuesday night.
Bamford would only accumulate a dire 32 touches of the ball to Meslier's superior 63, during a match that simply passed him by from start to finish.
Only registering two shots on Iversen's goal, alongside only completing 18 accurate passes from his 72 minutes on the Elland Road turf, Farke could well look to other members of his squad to come in and do a job against the Owls up top in place of a poor Bamford.
It would result in Bamford picking up a 5/10 rating from LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross after the game was over, with Cross stating that the 30-year-old offered 'very little.'

Whites hotshot Mateo Joseph could well fancy his chances in the first team off the back of Bamford's dire showing, whilst Joe Gelhardt will be waiting in the wings patiently for opportunities to impress after finding himself stuck on the Leeds periphery.
Before either of those reserve figures get the spotlight shone on them however, the most logical reshuffle would see Joel Piroe re-enter the Leeds first-team fold as a number ten – with the former Swansea City man creating one big chance against Stoke from off the bench – and then Rutter would slot back in as the lone striker again.
Patrick Bamford
Leeds will just keep wanting to add more wins to their season tally away from Bamford's off-day troubling them, with James desperate to continue being a hero for Farke's men in the crucial weeks to follow in the promotion hunt.
Seamer hopes blend of young stars and T20 know-how can help Nottinghamshire to second Blast win in three years

Harry Gurney has been crucial to Nottinghamshire’s sustained success•Getty Images
Only a handful of teams have managed to string together something approaching sustained success in the 17-year history of English domestic T20: Leicestershire (2004 and 2006), Hampshire (2010 and 2012), and Northamptonshire (2013 and 2016) are the only teams to have won multiple titles within a short period. But Nottinghamshire are well-placed to add their name to those that have gone before. After charging to the title in 2017, they have regenerated over the course of the next two years, losing the experience of Riki Wessels, Chris Read and Michael Lumb while bringing through Matt Carter, Ben Duckett and Luke Wood.On Saturday, they go into Finals Day as firm favourites. And while personnel has changed considerably since 2017, several constants remain. Dan Christian remains in situ as captain and overseas player; Alex Hales will hope to use the day as a platform to stake his claim for England re-integration; and Harry Gurney remains among the competition’s premier death bowlers.”It’s difficult to compare it to the 2017 white-ball teams,” Gurney tells ESPNcricinfo. “We probably had a little bit more experience then, with Brendan Taylor, Read, Lumb, those kind of guys. But this is certainly a very exciting group.”Never has a squad had as much depth as Nottinghamshire’s in the history of English domestic T20 cricket, and that much was evident in their quarter-final against Middlesex. They thrashed a side containing Eoin Morgan and AB de Villiers by ten wickets, with Steven Mullaney injured and Joe Clarke, Zak Chappell, Jake Ball, Luke Fletcher, Paul Coughlin and Ben Slater all left out. Even with Imad Wasim absent on Saturday due to a Pakistan training camp, they will still have a level of bench strength that only IPL sides can rival.”In our quarter-final we were back to batting how I’ve become accustomed to seeing Nottinghamshire bat over the years,” says Gurney. “We were so fortunate for a number of years to have so many destructive players, but with Nashy [Chris Nash] going in and hitting his first ball for four and really setting the tone – it felt sat on the balcony watching – a lot more like those years.””That depth is so important. To have someone like Nashy, who is in the top three run-scorers in the history of the competition, coming into the team and having the impact that he did is amazing.”And then having bowlers of the calibre of Luke Fletcher, Jake Ball sat on the bench, and Coggers [Coughlin] who was captain of Durham a couple of years ago – all of those guys would play in most teams around the country. It’s so valuable.”Dan [Christian] made a point about it in the changing room after the game – the way those guys have behaved despite not being in the starting XI has been really world-class, and that’s part of the reason that we’ve come together so well as a team and as a squad.”In that quarter-final, Gurney’s return of 2 for 44 from his four overs was unspectacular, but by dismissing Morgan in his penultimate over, he may well have saved his side 15 runs.”I’ve been slightly more expensive than I’d have liked this year,” he says, “but I’ve been picking up quite a lot of wickets. That is the key to reducing an opposition score, really – and that wicket was a good example of it.”He remains one of the more sought-after death bowlers on the T20 circuit, and it was no surprise to see him re-sign with the analytics-driven Melbourne Renegades for the 2019-20 Big Bash.Another similarity with the 2017 vintage is the presence in the side of a moving, living insurance policy. That year, Billy Root played ten games as a batsman, but only got to the crease four times; this season, Jake Libby has been picked nine times, but batted in only three of those matches. The logic is simple: with Christian and Samit Patel offering genuine all-round options, the presence of an extra batsman means that the explosive players in the side have less to fear about getting out, safe in the knowledge that there is a proper player behind them.”He’s been a massively underrated T20 cricketer in my view,” says Gurney of Libby. “If you look at his numbers, his average [33.54 over his career] and strike-rate [134.18] are very impressive. He bowls handy offspin, he’s a hell of a fielder, and his versatility with the bat is invaluable to a T20 team.””If you’re 10 for 3, having someone like Libbs to go in and knock it around and rebuild is incredibly useful, and at the same time he can also go in down the order and clear the ropes, or play spin very well.”Jake Libby plays a more important role for Notts than his one innings suggests•Getty Images
Libby’s role in the side is almost unique across sports; he is a player whose failure to exert any influence on a game demonstrates that his team-mates have been at their best.”He’s very versatile, a very handy cricketer,” says Gurney. “It’s frustrating for him fulfilling that role at times, because when things are going well he gets shoved down the order, but I’m sure he won’t complain if he’s got a medal round his neck on Saturday night.”On Finals Day, Nottinghamshire will play in the first semi-final against Worcestershire, who turned them over at Trent Bridge both this year and last, but Gurney is convinced that will count for little. “It can work the other way,” he says. “If you play against a team who you’ve had the wood over, you can start to overthink it, and wonder if they’re due to beat you. From a psychological perspective they might feel like it gives them a little bit of confidence, but I don’t think we’ll be short of that.”The other consideration for Gurney is that he has a poor record against two Worcestershire batsmen. In the past three seasons, he has bowled 16 balls at both Ross Whiteley and Ed Barnard; they have hit him for 39 and 34 runs respectively.”I’ll definitely trust my method against them,” Gurney says, “and the positive to take from a match-up like that is that you don’t go into a game taking anyone lightly. Maybe sometimes if you’ve got a good record against someone you can become complacent – there are games where you haven’t done your homework and think ‘I probably should have done’. That won’t be the case on Saturday.”And while the young players have caught the eye at times this year, Notts will rely on the experienced heads on Saturday. “There’s a bit of an adage that goes around in cricket: young players win you games, but experience wins you titles,” Gurney notes. If he is somewhere near his best at Edgbaston, that adage will be rooted in reality.

Our guide to Sunday’s main player draft for the new competition’s first season

What is it?The Hundred is the ECB’s new 100-ball tournament, which will be played in July-August 2020. It will be played by eight new teams, based in seven different cities (there are two London teams).Who are the new teams?Birmingham Phoenix (Edgbaston) London Spirit (Lord’s) Manchester Originals (Old Trafford) Northern Superchargers (Leeds) Oval Invincibles (The Oval) Southern Brave (Ageas Bowl) Trent Rockets (Trent Bridge) Welsh Fire (Cardiff)Who’s making the picks? All the teams are owned by the ECB, so unlike in plenty of other leagues there will be no owners on the draft tables. Picks will be made by head coaches, but with plenty of behind-the-scenes inputs from the rest of their staff and their analysts. The head coaches are as follows:Birmingham Phoenix – Andrew McDonald London Spirit – Shane Warne Manchester Originals – Simon Katich Northern Superchargers – Darren Lehmann Oval Invincibles – Tom Moody Southern Brave – Mahela Jayawardene Trent Rockets – Stephen Fleming Welsh Fire – Gary KirstenDo they have any players already?Yes. Each of the men’s sides has picked one England player. Teams could choose one Test-contracted player from their ‘catchment area’, meaning Northern Superchargers faced the choice between Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, and Joe Root (they went for Stokes), while those players left over were allocated to a team without a Test player.Joe Root of Trent Rockets, one of the eight new teams that competing in The Hundred•Getty Images
Each team then picked two ‘local icons’, each of whom spent the 2019 season at a county in the new team’s catchment area. They were able to negotiate a salary with their new team, and ESPNcricinfo understands that some players were convinced to take lower salaries due to the security of being picked up before the main draft. That means that the majority of England’s one-day players have been picked already, though a handful – Joe Denly, Sam Billings, and Mark Wood, for example – will be available in the draft. How does the draft work? After a random draw, the order of picks for the first round was decided, with Stephen Fleming’s Trent Rockets set to pick the first player. The order of picks will then be reversed for the second round, and so on. Where a local icon has been picked, the team will skip that turn in the draft. Each team has 100 seconds to make their pick in each round. Salaries are pre-decided, and depend on how early a player is picked. First and second-round picks will earn £125,000 each, while round 13 or 14 picks earn £30,000.What about overseas players? As revealed by ESPNcricinfo, some 240 overseas players have registered for the draft, and with the exception of India’s white-ball stars and AB de Villiers, most of the big names are available. Each team will be permitted three overseas players, in both their squad and their XI.Can they sign anyone after the draft?Yes – each team will also be able to make a ‘wildcard’ pick after the conclusion of next season’s Vitality Blast, who will receive a £30,000 contract. What happens next season?Teams will be able to retain up to ten players in their squad for the 2021 edition of the tournament, and will mutually agree the salary band with the relevant player. What about the women’s competition? There’s no draft for the women’s competition, with players instead negotiating deals directly with head coaches. Each team has already signed two England-contracted players, and has until the end of May 2020 to complete their squad. When is the draft? The draft starts at 7pm local time in Sky’s London studios, and ESPNcricinfo will bring you live coverage throughout the evening to see who ends up where.

Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement and head of recruitment Nils Koppen enjoyed a successful January transfer window as they made three additions to the first-team squad.
Mohammed Diomande, Oscar Cortes, and Fabio Silva were all brought in on initial loan deals to bolster the Belgian head coach's options across the pitch.
Diomande has already produced two goals and one assist, Cortes racked up one goal and two assists before his injury, and Silva has found the back of the net four times.
Mohammed Diomande
Clement will now be hoping that they continue to fire in goals and assists to help the Scottish giants to secure more silverware before the end of the season, which could result in them being viewed as successful signings.
Whilst it is easy to look at signings as successes and failures over the years, you can also look at players the club wanted to sign but failed to, and wonder what could have been.
Rangers' interest in Xavi Simons
TEAMtalk reported in December 2021 that Rangers were one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign attacking midfielder Xavi Simons from French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
His contract with the Ligue 1 side was due to expire at the end of the season and the Light Blues were seemingly looking to snap him up on a free transfer in the summer.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst – the Gers manager at the time – was 'well aware' of the young whiz due to his connections in the Netherlands, which could have given them an edge over their rivals outside of Holland in negotiations, had it got to that stage.
PSV's Xavi Simons
However, Simons opted to move back to his home country as he signed for Dutch giants PSV on a five-year deal. However, PSG were able to negotiate a buy-back clause as part of their compensation, given that his age meant it could not be a straightforward free transfer.
The Netherlands international hit the ground running with his new club, as he plundered an outstanding 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 appearances in all competitions.
PSV lost to Rangers in the Champions League play-off tie to qualify for the group stages in August but Simons only played 45 minutes over the two legs.
The 20-year-old was on fire in the Eredivisie with a sensational return of 19 goals, eight assists, and 11 'big chances' created in 34 appearances.
Rangers must now wish that they had signed him under van Bronckhorst in 2022 as the Dutch star's value has soared, and he is currently worth more than first-team star Todd Cantwell.
Todd Cantwell's current market valuation
At the time of writing (13/03/2024), Football Transfers has the English attacking midfielder's Expected Transfer Value (xTV) at €4.2m (£3.6m), which is the exact same xTV that Simons had in May 2022 before his move to PSV.
Michael Beale swooped to sign the mercurial talent from English Championship side Norwich City on a permanent deal at the start of last year, and he has been a terrific operator in the final third for the Scottish giants.
As you can see in the table below, Cantwell has provided quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals for the Light Blues in his two seasons at the club so far.

The 26-year-old playmaker has directly contributed with 11 goals and seven assists in 38 Scottish Premiership matches for the Light Blues, which shows that he has the ability to be a difference-maker for the team in the final third.
At the age of 26, Cantwell also has plenty of years left ahead of him to develop and improve as a player to increase his output at the top end of the pitch even further.
Whilst, in isolation, the former Norwich star has been a successful, and impressive, signing by Rangers, some may look at Simons and wonder what could have been had van Bronckhorst snapped him up six months before the Gers signed Cantwell.
Xavi Simons' current market value
At the time of writing (13/03/2024), the Dutch international currently has an xTV of a staggering €43.1m (£36.8m), which means that his value is significantly higher than the current Light Blues attacking midfielder's (£3.6m).
His market value has soared alongside his terrific performances for PSV last season, and his outstanding displays on loan with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga this term, having been re-signed by PSG and sent to Germany on a temporary basis last summer.
The 20-year-old dynamo has been in fantastic form for Leipzig throughout the 2023/24 campaign, and his current statistics suggest that he would be a big upgrade on Cantwell.

As you can see in the table above, Simons has outperformed the Rangers star in a number of key attacking statistics, whilst playing in one of Europe's major leagues, with far more key passes, big chances created, and assists, in only two more appearances.
The Leipzig loanee has also showcased his quality in the Champions League this term with a return of two goals, two assists, and three 'big chances' created in eight outings in the competition. This shows that he has the ability to compete and play at the highest level.
These statistics show why Simons' value has skyrocketed since Rangers failed to sign him under van Bronckhorst, as the talented whiz has excelled in the Netherlands and Germany over the last two seasons.
He has scored and assisted goals at an exceptional rate as an attacking midfielder and is currently worth more than any player within the Gers squad – including Cantwell – at this time.
This suggests that the Glasgow giants had a howler when they were unable to convince the talented dynamo to make the move to Ibrox back in the summer of 2022, when he left PSG, as they must now wish that they had snapped him up.
