Alex Blake haunts Hampshire again as Kent seal two-wicket victory

Coming in at 41 for 4, left-hander smashes Chris Wood for two final-over sixes to seal consecutive wins for Kent

ECB Reporters Network21-Jul-2019

Alex Blake gave Kent the impetus they needed•Getty Images

Alex Blake dragged Kent Spitfires to an incredible two-wicket Vitality Blast victory over Hampshire to replicate his 2015 heroics.Big-hitting Blake powered 57 off 38 balls to maintain the Spitfires’ 100 per cent record in the competition, having come to the crease with his side in dire straits.Four years ago, Blake left the Ageas Bowl open-mouthed as he crashed 71 in 30 balls, having arrived at the crease at 70 for 5 chasing 178.On this occasion, the 30-year-old walked out at 41 for 4, still requiring 105, and took Kent over the line by striking back-to-back sixes from the final Chris Wood over to secure two points from a tight encounter with a ball to spare.”I obviously have good memories here like that game in 2015 and like playing here,” said Blake. “David Griffiths, who was a Kent and Hampshire player, sent me a [photo] of after the 2015 game when we were in the changing room with champagne earlier, and said ‘same again today’ which jogged my memory.”I was struggling against the spin but we were saying out there that if we could set it up towards the end then you never know if you could sneak over the line. You are never out of the game, and I have the confidence that I can clear the ropes.”After Hampshire had scored a par 145 from their overs, Kent lost stand-in captain Daniel Bell-Drummond to the fifth ball of the reply when he chopped Chris Wood behind.Ollie Robinson clubbed Liam Dawson, returning after being unused in England’s World Cup campaign, over the midwicket boundary but only picked out Aneurin Donald when attempting an action replay. The Spitfires were then stunned to 32 for three when overseas star Mohammad Nabi mistimed a pull off Kyle Abbott to Vince at mid-off.Abbott, who only played three times in last season’s Blast, picked up a quick-fire second when Zak Crawley leading edged to mid-on.The slide continued when Sean Dickson was stumped off Mason Crane, although Blake powered the legspinner to two straight sixes to keep the run-rate manageable. At the other end, Dawson pinned Jordan Cox lbw, Abbott bowled Adam Milne, Chris Morris caught and bowled Hardus Vijoen but Blake was still there. And with 16 needed from the last over Hampshire were still favourites. But two twos and a pair of enormous straight sixes sent Blake running around in delight.Earlier, Hampshire elected to bat first in front of the Ageas Bowl’s highest domestic crowd for two years, with around 10,000 packing the ground including thousands of youngsters on All Stars Day.They weren’t treated to an electric start from Rilee Rossouw and Aneurin Donald as the former was dropped at midwicket.Donald did smash Hampshire’s first maximum of the competition, over fine leg, but departed next ball when he skied straight up in the air, before Rossouw nicked off.James Vince proved his hangover had abated a week after the thrilling World Cup final at Lord’s when he drove and then cut his first two deliveries the boundary. The Hampshire skipper then dispatched two sixes off an Imran Qayyum over as he reached 29th T20 fifty in 33 balls. But two balls later he handed Nabi a caught and bowled which the hosts failed to recover from.Fred Klaassen, who dismissed James Fuller and Sam Northeast in consecutive balls, and Viljoen ended with figures of two for 27 and two for 20 respectively as Kent strangled Hampshire – with only 42 runs coming in the last six-and-a-half overs.

The Leeds star who has been Farke’s real hero instead of Summerville

Leeds United extended their winning run in the Championship to eight matches as they Plymouth Argyle 2-0 at Home Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Whites are currently sat in second place in the division – in the automatic promotion places – but have played a game more than Southampton in third.

Current Championship top six (18/02/2024)

The race for automatic promotion back to the Premier League is hotting up and Daniel Farke's side are positioned well at this moment in time.

Leeds are looking to return to the top-flight at the first time of asking and the German head coach, who was brought in last summer to lead the charge, is on course to achieve the club's goal.

He has been blessed with some star performers throughout the season. Crysencio Summerville has grabbed the headlines with his attacking output at the top end of the pitch but the real hero of the campaign for Farke has been versatile enforcer Ethan Ampadu.

Crysencio Summerville's Championship dominance

The 22-year-old winger has been in phenomenal form for the Whites with his outstanding contributions as both a scorer and a creator of goals on the flank.

He produced four goals and two assists in 28 Premier League appearances during the 2022/23 campaign as Leeds were relegated down to the Championship.

Leeds duo Daniel Farke and Crysencio Summerville.

The drop to the second tier has allowed the Dutch sensation to flourish as Summerville is currently on a return of 15 goals and eight assists in 30 league matches this term.

His finishing has been extraordinary as he has scored those 15 goals from an xG of 11.62, which means that the talented whiz has more than made the most of the chances that have been created for him throughout the season.

Whereas, Summerville only has eight assists from an xA of 9.33. He has created 16 'big chances' for his teammates but they have not been clinical enough with the opportunities that the young maestro has provided them with.

The former Feyenoord prospect has also got supporters off their seats with his exciting and direct play on the wing as he has completed 2.3 dribbles per match, which highlights his desire to run and get past opposition defenders on a regular basis.

He currently ranks within the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Championship this season for shot-creating actions (6.65) per 90, and the top 2% for Expected Assisted Goals (0.37) per 90.

Summerville has been one of the best forwards in the division, as illustrated by his outstanding rank among his positional peers as a creator to go along with his 15 goals, and has been key to Leeds' assault on the top two.

He had a quiet match against Plymouth on Saturday, with zero goals and zero key passes, whilst Ampadu produced yet another fantastic display at the heart of the defence alongside Joe Rodon.

Ethan Ampadu's performance against Plymouth in numbers

The Wales international lined up at the back for Leeds and helped to keep the likes of Alfie Devine and Morgan Whittaker from causing too many problems, as the hosts only managed one shot on target all match.

Ampadu's strong performance played a pivotal role in his side keeping a clean sheet at Home Park, which provided the attacking players with the opportunity to go and win the match with their play at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, the former Chelsea prospect was a dominant force at centre-back for Leeds as he won five of his duels, which means that Plymouth's players found it incredibly difficult to get the better of him in physical contests.

Ampadu was also composed and reliable in possession when passing the ball out from the back as he completed 91% of his attempted passes (74/81) throughout the game.

This was far from a one-off performance from the Welsh enforcer as he has been consistently impressive as both a defensive midfielder and a centre-back this season.

Ethan Ampadu's star role for Leeds

The £7m signing from Chelsea started the campaign in midfield alongside Glen Kamara and caught the eye with his defensive prowess in the middle of the park.

He currently ranks within the top 19% of midfielders for interceptions (1.43) and blocks (1.55) per 90 respectively, and the top 6% for clearances (2.21) per 90 in the Championship this season.

No midfielder within the Leeds squad has averaged more tackles (1.8) or interceptions (1.4) per match than Ampadu so far this term, which illustrates his importance to the side out of possession.

In 33 Championship appearances, the Welsh star has made 59 tackles, 46 interceptions, and a staggering 221 ball recoveries. He has also won an eye-catching 125 duels with a success rate of 57%.

Ampadu's defensive quality has been particularly eye-catching since Farke moved him to centre-back in reaction to Pascal Struijk's injury issue. He has started in the heart of the defence in eight of the club's last nine matches in all competitions, which has resulted in eight wins, seven clean sheets, and one goal conceded.

The 23-year-old tank has been a monster at the back alongside his international teammate Rodon, as they have only allowed one goal to be scored past them in seven league appearances as a centre-back pairing.

Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu.

His passing quality in that position has also been impressive, as Ampadu currently ranks within the top 13% of central defenders in the division for progressive passes (4.58) per 90.

This shows that the Leeds gem is a forward-thinking player who wants to progress the play for his team by breaking lines and finding teammates in dangerous positions, which is backed up by his rank within the top 4% of centre-backs for shot-creating actions (2.03) per 90.

The Welsh colossus has been Farke's real hero of the campaign as he has provided quality in possession, with his progressive and reliable passing, and out of possession, with his dominant and aggressive defending.

He has also offered outstanding versatility with superb performances as both a midfielder and a centre-back, along with his leadership qualities as the head coach has handed him the armband in the absence of Liam Cooper and Struijk.

Therefore, Ampadu has been the true star of the season over Summerville due to the complete nature of his performances and the platform that his play has provided the Dutch winger, and his fellow attackers, to go and work his magic in the final third.

'Why not try it a fourth time?' – how Malinga swung and yorked his way to history, again

The four-in-four – for a second time in his career – aside, the Sri Lanka paceman also became the first to 100 T20I wickets during the game

Andrew Fidel Fernando07-Sep-2019

Lasith Malinga celebrates the feat with fans in Pallekele•Getty Images

Twice now in international cricket, he has taken four wickets in four balls. Of the 100 hat-tricks in international cricket, he has a 5% share. And if Lasith Malinga had not produced his searing spell on Friday, which in addition to the four-in-four reaped him a match analysis of five wickets for six runs, Sri Lanka stood little chance of defending their modest 125 for 8. They would have been whitewashed.”I always come to every match thinking I can turn the game around,” Malinga, who moved up 20 spots to No. 21 in the T20I bowlers’ rankings after the performance, said. “The skill that I have in taking wickets, considering the experience, is more than any other player on the field. I don’t care who believes that or not, but I believe that. So I want to control the game as soon as I get the ball in hand.”The hat-trick, though, was not the only milestone Malinga ticked during his spell. His first wicket had been his 100th in T20Is – a tally no other bowler has achieved. In moving into triple figures in the shortest format, Malinga also became the first bowler in history to have 100 wickets in all three international formats.TAKE THE QUIZ: Has Malinga dismissed him in a hat-trick sequence?”It’s just another achievement for me. It happened today and it’s history now, but if I was hit badly tomorrow, these four wickets and the other achievements are all forgotten,” he said. “But then, I am really happy that I could take four wickets in four balls in T20s as well, because I am playing in the latter part of my career.”All the younger players who played with me, could see it with their own eyes. I think that could have been an inspiration to them and maybe they also think that they can something like this. That’s what an up-and-coming player needs – to see something happen, and train towards that.”ALSO READ: Malinga’s fifth hat-trick and 100 T20I wicketsMalinga also spoke in detail about his thinking during the four-wicket sequence, during which he dismissed Colin Munro, Hamish Rutherford, Colin de Grandhomme and Ross Taylor.”After taking the first wicket [of Munro], the newcomer [Rutherford] was an inexperienced left hander. I thought of getting him out in the first ball. My best weapon is the inswinging yorker, so I thought of using that and he got out,” he explained.”Then came de Grandhome and Taylor. These two guys have been a real headache for us throughout the series. The other bowlers failed to get them in the other match. I was thinking how to get these two guys, and I knew we could win the game if we get them. I thought that if I could bowl two yorkers, then why not the third? So I got back to my mental preparation that I do before I bowl a yorker, and walked back to my run-up.”The timing and accuracy was there and I got the third wicket. When I got the third, I was thinking again: ‘Why not try it a fourth time?’ It was all the same preparation again and I did it.”

Leeds already had a Connor Roberts upgrade but now he’s not at the club

Leeds United decided to bring in German head coach Daniel Farke last summer as they looked to secure an instant return to the Premier League.

The Whites then backed the former Norwich City boss, who won two Championship titles during his time with the Canaries, in the transfer market.

Ilia Gruev, Joel Piroe, Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow, Djed Spence, Jaidon Anthony, Sam Byram, and Glen Kamara were all brought in, either on loan or permanently.

Leeds duo Ethan Ampadu and Joel Piroe.

The Leeds boss also allowed a host of senior players to move on following the club's relegation from the Premier League, as the likes of Tyler Adams, Rodrigo, Jack Harrison, and Robin Koch, among many others, left either on loan or permanently.

One departure that, perhaps, went under the radar amidst so many senior exits was Cody Drameh's move to Birmingham on loan, with an option for them to make it permanent.

He is out of contract in the summer but Leeds would be due compensation from his next club and Tony Mowbray's side have the first option to snap him up for an agreed fee.

Cody Drameh's 2022/23 season in numbers

The decision to part ways with the 22-year-old dynamo appears to have been an early blunder from Farke as the English ace has been in fantastic form in the Championship over the past 18 months and is a better option than recent loan signing Connor Roberts.

Drameh, who played once in the Premier League last season, joined Luton Town on loan for the second half of the 2022/23 campaign and caught the eye with his superb performances.

Former Luton loanee Cody Drameh.

The former Fulham youngster quickly established himself as a regular starter for Rob Edwards and played a pivotal role in their promotion to the top-flight.

He started 16 league matches for the Hatters and made a big impact with his contributions both in and out of possession from a right-back position.

As you can see in the table above, the Leeds loanee chipped in at the top end of the pitch by creating chances for his teammates and was difficult for opposition players to get past with 4.2 tackles and interceptions combined per match.

No Luton defender made more tackles per outing and only Tom Lockyer (1.6) made more interceptions per game for Edwards' side than Drameh in the second tier last season.

His defensive attributes were on full display in the play-off final at Wembely as he won 100% (5/5) of his duels and made two clearances as the match finished 1-1 after extra-time before Luton won on penalties.

Overall, the young enforcer proved his quality in the Championship with consistently impressive performances at right-back for the Hatters, which helped them to win promotion to the Premier League.

Cody Drameh's form with Birmingham

His displays for Luton were seemingly not enough to convince Farke that he was ready to play week-in-week-out for Leeds, and the German boss sent him on loan to Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Spence was brought in on loan from Tottenham Hotspur and was sent back to the Premier League side in January, as the Whites exercised their option to terminate the deal.

Leeds United's loan defender Djed Spence.

This allowed the club to swoop in to sign Roberts on loan from Burnley until the end of the season, which appears to be a solid signing on paper.

However, it could be looked at as a blunder by Leeds as they already fumbled a better option in the form of Drameh, who has been in fine form for Birmingham.

As you can see in the table above, the 5 foot 9 star has offered quality at both ends of the pitch in the Championship once again with creativity on the ball and solid defensive work out of possession.

Drameh, who was described as a "Duracell Bunny" by ex-boss Steve Morison, has also provided an outlet in transition with 1.1 dribbles completed per match, with a success rate of 64%.

These statistics show that the Birmingham ace has been an excellent performer in all three thirds this season, as well as last term for Luton.

Why Drameh is a better option than Roberts

His outstanding form for the Blues and the Hatters also suggests that he is a better option than deadline day Leeds signing Roberts, who won promotion to the Premier League with Burnley last term.

Both players were key performers for teams who made their way up to the top-flight but Drameh produced more quality as an attacking threat and as a defender.

As you can see in the table above, the Luton loanee outperformed the Wales international in a host of key statistics in and out of possession last term.

He made 2.5 more tackles and interceptions combined per game, whilst winning a similar percentage of his duels, and created 0.6 more chances per match for his teammates in the second tier.

Impressively the talented battler has maintained similar averages, particularly defensively, during his loan spell with Birmingham in the Championship this season, which shows that he can be a consistent performer at that level.

Overall, these statistics suggest that Farke had a blunder by allowing the right-back to join the Blues on loan when he needed a right-back in his squad, as the deal for Spence did not work out and Drameh has already outperformed Roberts in the same division.

Cody Drameh

At the age of 22, the former Cardiff loanee is also six years younger than the experienced Burnley defender and, therefore, has more room to grow and develop over the years to come.

This means that Drameh could have been a long-term option for Leeds as a player who could have improved with more game time in Yorkshire. Instead, they may end up watching on as he goes on to enjoy a great career, whether that ends up being in the Championship, the Premier League, or elsewhere.

Tottenham eyeing defender likened to Destiny Udogie with exit on the cards

Tottenham are said to be eyeing a defender likened to Destiny Udogie, and this could push a "relentless" player out the exit door.

Spurs chasing new full-back as Ange wants alternatives

According to recent reports, Spurs are now keen to sign a new full-back this summer to provide back-up alternatives for both Udogie and Pedro Porro.

What Tottenham staff are now thinking about Timo Werner behind-the-scenes

The German’s deal contains a buy-option.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 29, 2024

The defensive duo are key mainstays in Ange Postecoglou's starting eleven, thriving as the Australian's inverted full-back first choices, and an extended absence for either of the pair would arguably spell trouble for Spurs.

"The way Tottenham play this season, everybody talks about the spine of the team, but it’s actually the fullbacks who are the most important players,” said pundit Stephen Warnock on The Sky Sports Football Show this season.

“And I am made up to say that. It makes me very happy. They change the way that they play. Udogie doesn’t play as a conventional fullback or as an overlapping fullback.

“Incredibly, I saw an article on this a few weeks ago where he has actually completed the most dribbles in midfield. That tells you everything about the type of player he is and where he is playing on the pitch, so often, you see him and Porro in centre-forward positions or number 10 positions.

Only Emerson Royal, Ben Davies and the consistently injured Ryan Sessegnon stand out as Postecoglou's alternatives, and that is something the club apparently wish to rectify this summer.

Indeed, both Southampton star Kyle Walker-Peters and Udinese's Festy Ebosele have been mentioned as options recently, but another one who appears to be in contention now is Fiorentina starlet Michael Kayode.

Spurs eyeing Kayode who's "in the mould" of Udogie

According to HITC and journalist Graeme Bailey, Tottenham are eyeing Kayode and have been keeping tabs on the 19-year-old's performances in Serie A.

He's described as being in the "Udogie mould" by this report, with Italian agent Pino Vitale singing his praises after the defender kept a lid on Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

“This one is really strong,” Pino Vitale told Radio Firenze Viola.

Michael-kayode-fiorentina

“Incredible. He forced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to chase him. Kvaratskhelia had to change wings due to the way Kayode controlled him! There is no need to worry about him. He is only 19 years old, but he is a ‘player’.”

It's added that Kayode's potential arrival at Spurs would "pave the way" for Emerson to leave. The Brazilian would be pushed further down the Tottenham pecking order by his signing, so the his exit could well be on the cards.

“Let me tell you, this guy is very, very good. He is all action. He is up and down, very quick and loves to attack," said former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell when Emerson arrived.

“The way Spurs play, with the full-backs bombing on, he is perfect. He is relentless down the flank because he is an incredibly fit guy. He also has good quality on the ball so I expect him to quickly become a fan favourite there."

Steve Waugh rejoins Australia squad in hour of need

Originally set to be a part of the touring party only for the first two Tests, the former captain has flown back to help the Australians bounce back from the Headingley loss

As they fight to recover from the setback at Headingley and seal the Ashes with victory at Old Trafford, Australia’s tourists have called back Steve Waugh to help mentor the team after he was conspicuously absent during the Leeds Test.Originally scheduled to be with the team for only the first two Tests of the series, Waugh toyed with rushing back from a prior commitment in Australia to be around for Headingley, but in his absence the touring team got to the brink of an Ashes victory before throwing it away in a mad hour up against a rampant Ben Stokes. It is a measure of how much Waugh’s presence was valued, but also how desperate Australia are to finish this Ashes series on the winning side, that he has been flown back into camp, arriving late on Sunday night in Manchester to help oversee the team’s preparations for the fourth Test. He will also stay on for the final match at The Oval.ALSO READ: Ian Chappell – How do the 2019 Ashes compare to 2005?”He was supposed to come until the end of the second Test but he enjoyed it so much and we saw such great value in having him here,” coach Justin Langer said. “Guys like Punter [Ricky Ponting] and Steve Waugh, not only do they have a great presence in the group, but they are great psychologists. They’ve been in the cauldron before, they’ve seen it all, so to have that those type of guys, we are talking about developing leadership in Australian cricket, to have our guys to learn from people of that calibre is very important short term.”Longer term there is huge value in that (too). He’s been like a kid at Christmas, to come back after such a long time away from the game, his passion and enthusiasm for the game has been brilliant. We asked him to stay for the third Test but he had to go back for a function, he was actually going to fly there, do the function and fly back the next day. That’s how much he is enjoying it and we see great value.”Asked whether or not Waugh’s presence had been missed at Headingley, Langer said that while it was hard to quantify, he was in little doubt that the presence of great former players alongside the current group was a significant encouragement to the team.”You can’t measure it. Would it have made any difference in those last 60 or 70 runs? Who knows,” Langer said. “These things I’ve always felt throughout my whole time in Australian cricket to learn from the Dennis Lillees and the Allan Borders and the David Boons and the Ian Chappells and the Greg Chappells, the list goes on. So any chance we have for our guys to rub shoulders with them is a huge benefit short and long term, but whether that’s the difference between us winning or losing a Test match like the other day, you can never tell.”Certainly the way we have gone about our business for the first three Tests, there’s a bit of steel there and having those sort of people around helps. I don’t think he’d do it full time, a bit like Punter, they have got so many other things in their life, but anytime we can have them with the group… If you could have Punter one day a year you would have him because he has such an impact on the group, same with Tugga.”Having Waugh involved, much like Ponting fulfilled an assistant coaching role during the World Cup, was a priority for Langer after he faced many testing moments during his first home summer as coach. Neither Waugh nor Ponting have come cheaply for Cricket Australia, but there is clearly a desire to have them involved in a semi-regular capacity, especially around major assignments such as the World Cup, the Ashes, or next year’s Twenty20 World Cup in Australia.Justin Langer chats to Steven Smith at Australia’s training session•Getty Images

“We are setting up this mentoring system where we have these great players coming in and being with the guys,” Langer said. “It’s unsustainable doing it full time, we are seeing that throughout coaching around the world really, but when we can have them we will have them as much as we can.”This is my chosen profession, you feel it as journalists, it’s hard work being on the road all the time but that is our profession, Steve Waugh or Ricky Ponting haven’t chosen to become career coaches whereas this is my job. You ride the highs and lows of that and you learn along the way, that’s why it’s important from a personal point of view to have great friends like Steve Waugh or Ricky Ponting or any of my old team mates, like the other assistant coaches, they share the load if you like.”Waugh inspired part of how Australia tackled the aftermath of Headingley, as Langer insisted upon a ruthless approach to the tour match against Derbyshire while also keeping the whole squad together rather than allowing for those not playing in Derby to take brief breaks elsewhere.”Steve Waugh’s talked about, we’ve talked about the great Australian teams have been pretty ruthless in winning games of cricket,” Langer said. “Before the toss, we said, ‘it’s not a practice game, it’s not a centre wicket hit out, we’re going to play a proper game of cricket; we’re going to try and win the game no matter what’. They won the toss and batted, usually it’s a bigger challenge to do that (win) in a three-day game. The way our guys won the game in two-and-a-bit days was that’s a guide to me they’re up.”They were all together, they trained together, sometimes it can become a bit fractured. It’s not going to be fractured here for the next few weeks. I thought the attitude of the last few days was really good. Because on the back of a World Cup, you’ve got to try and give guys as much mental rest as possible. The physical rest is fine; they’re all fit now except for some of the fast bowlers at stages. It’s always been a philosophy and theme of my coaching is we’ve got to do things together as much as we possibly can.”It might be right, it might be wrong, that’s just a strong belief I have. Everyone was in Nottingham. They were all together, we’ll stick together. There’s only a few more weeks of this tour. It’s been a long hard tour, we’ll stick together as much as we can. Hopefully it’ll give us the right outcome.”The Australians will be without one member of their support staff, though, with assistant coach Brad Haddin returning home to Sydney for personal reasons.
