Sheffield Wednesday eyeing Cadamarteri upgrade who’s been “a joy to watch”

Sheffield Wednesday will just be pleased that they're not the laughing stock in the Championship anymore, rooted to the bottom of the division before Danny Rohl's arrival to Hillsborough with a miracle needed to stay up.

Now, before going into today's game with Mark Robins' in-form Coventry City, the Owls find themselves within touching distance of escaping the drop-zone – four points shy of 21st in the league, that spot occupied coincidentally by a Huddersfield Town side managed by ex-Wednesday boss Darren Moore.

Still, the Owls will need more positive reinforcements through the door this month to help the South Yorkshire giants pull off an unbelievable relegation escape.

One player in particular has been catching Rohl's eye, according to reports, signing a possible upgrade on breakout star Bailey Cadamarteri up top in the process.

Sheffield Wednesday's striker search

Already signing Ike Ugbo on a loan deal this January who can play as a striker, alongside recruiting a new goalkeeper in James Beadle also on loan, the Owls could make it a hat-trick of temporary swoops with a deal for Arsenal youngster Mika Biereth.

First reported by Alex Miller of the Sheffield Star, who described the Danish starlet as 'direct and goal-minded' in the report, the Championship relegation candidates are keen on bringing Biereth on loan to Hillsborough after a prolific spell up in Scotland with Motherwell.

A further update from Miller did suggest that Wednesday might be facing a losing battle to sign the youthful Gunners attacker ahead of other suitors – with Austrian outfit Sturm Graz heading straight to the front of the queue for his services – but the Owls should still persist with this deal.

With Anthony Musaba the top scorer at the moment for Rohl's lowly second-tier side, despite only registering five strikes for the season, Wednesday could well do with the addition of Biereth this January to show they mean business in the fight against the drop.

Rohl could even have to be cut-throat and limit Cadamarteri's first team minutes if a deal was secured for the former Motherwell man, the German boss needing every one of his players to be firing on all cylinders between now and the end of the gruelling Championship campaign.

How Mika Biereth compares to Bailey Cadamarteri

Biereth has made scoring goals look easy ever since bursting onto the scene at youth level with Fulham before moving across to north London, netting a remarkable 21 goals from just 21 games in the U18 Premier League during the 2018-19 season.

The Denmark U21 international took to the pressure of playing for Arsenal like a duck to water after leaving the Cottagers, bagging 11 goals during his first Premier League 2 season before a loan switch to Scotland came calling.

This deadly ability to finish off chances at youth level translated to men's football whilst with Motherwell, helping himself to 11 goal contributions from just 14 games at Fir Park.

His exceptional displays in Scotland saw Daily Record journalist Ben Banks describe him as a "joy to watch", with Motherwell losing the ice-cold attacker branded as a "nightmare."

In stark contrast, Cadamarteri – back in South Yorkshire – only has four goal contributions next to his name this season with the teenage sensation now goalless in his last five Championship games.

Loaning Biereth out to the Championship could see the towering 6 foot 2 striker grow even more and perfect his craft, with the Owls arguably in need of another striker into the building if 32-year-old Michael Smith does leave this month for Derby County.

With Rohl preferring to give raw and unfinished gems chances in his starting lineup since moving to South Yorkshire, over players who have been there and done that, Biereth could well be the next up-and-coming star he fancies this transfer window with Cadamarteri falling down the pecking order as a result.

Nottingham Forest could land "monster" £25m Murillo partner

Since arriving in December, Nuno Espirito Santo has identified the striker role as a position to upgrade on at Nottingham Forest, but he is now also on the lookout for a new defender.

However, their search could be put on hold after the club has been charged with a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Nevertheless, let’s take a look at the defender who could become the perfect partner for Murillo.

Forest’s search for a centre-back

According to reports from TEAMtalk earlier this week, Forest are interested in signing Trevoh Chalobah this month.

The Chelsea defender rejected a move to the Tricky Trees in the summer, but it is believed he could make the switch due to his desire to remain in England.

The Blues will reportedly accept a bid of £25m for the defender, but Forest will face competition from a couple of Italian clubs, notably Napoli.

How Chalobah would fit in the Forest team

Since moving to Forest in the summer for around £15m, Murillo has been a rock at the heart of the backline. The left-footed star has featured as the left centre-back in 15 Premier League matches this season, and since entering the starting XI, he has yet to be displaced.

Furthermore, before this weekend, the Brazilian ranked first for the most clearances per ninety minutes (6) for players aged 21 or less throughout the entirety of Europe's top five leagues.

However, for the side to really develop into a top-half team, they must sign a right centre-back to partner Murillo, and Chalobah would be perfect for the role.

The Chelsea defender hasn’t played a single game of football all season, with the club’s never-ending recruitment and Chalobah’s need for minutes pushing him further down the pecking order. However, prior to the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, the 24-year-old was a frequent starter for the Blues, playing 25 times in the Premier League last season.

Nonetheless, the table below shows a handful of Chalobah’s statistics from the last year across the top European leagues.

Chalobah has been described as a “monster” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig for his ability to dominate both with and without the ball, with the ex-Huddersfield loanee extremely comfortable dealing with attackers who are direct, due to his athletic frame That makes him dynamic, as shown by his impressive tackling numbers.

The Chelsea star’s biggest attribute is his ability on the ball and confidence to receive it under any circumstance, highlighted by his high touches, successful take-ons, and passes completed. However, he also has the bravery to progress the ball quickly, which is vital when playing for a side that operates on the break.

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.

Therefore, Chalobah would add a nice balance next to Murillo, who tends to progress play via dribbling, as shown by the fact he is in the top 1% for successful take-ons in the Premier League, as per FBref.

Overall, Chalobah is an extremely talented defender who needs the right environment to flourish, and he could do just that next to Murillo at Forest.

Durham battled to 273 thanks to a partnership between captain Cameron Bancroft and 21-year-old Jack Burnham

As curators of the county circuit’s most aesthetically appealing backdrop, Worcestershire have an onerous responsibility. Having upset enough traditionalists by allowing a monstrous (to some critics) four-storey hotel to be built in one corner of the New Road ground, the decision to erect a new electronic scoreboard next to it cannot have been taken lightly. The one it replaces was so small as to be barely visible, particularly now that the banks of seats obscure half of it anyway. Make it too large, though, and there is danger of encroaching on The View. Happily, the chosen dimensions have avoided that, although the grey open metalwork surrounding it is not a masterstroke of urban minimalism: it just isn’t finished yet.The numbers on the scorecard showed both sides in the ascendancy at different times on a sunblessed day of the kind that shows off the cathedral at its best, set against a crisp blue backcloth, framed by vibrant spring green.Durham rejected the chance to bowl first and won the right to bat, which did not seem too smart as openers Alex Lees and Cameron Steel were being dismissed with just 10 on the board. Lees drove ambitiously at a ball from Charlie Morris and a thick inside edge clattered into his stumps, then Steel followed one outside off stump and Riki Wessels took a sharp low catch at first slip. It was a wicket for Joe Leach, the captain, significant because he had not played competitive senior cricket for 11 months after suffering a stress fracture in the back.Leach struck another blow in his next over as Gareth Harte was leg before and at 14 for 3 Durham were in a spot of early bother. Leach finished his opening spell with 2 for 12 from six overs.Once the shine began to wear off the new ball, however, the story began to change. Cameron Bancroft, the Durham captain, applied himself judiciously, as too did Jack Burnham, the former England Under-19 batsman. They negotiated a steady and for the most part untroubled path to lunch at 77 for 3.The day became a significant one for Burnham, too, as he seeks to rebuild his career after a year of enforced absence, the consequence of three failed tests for recreational drug use. There are some who advocate life bans for any form of drug abuse but 12 months is a long time for a 21-year-old for whom it must have once seemed he had the world at his feet.He took himself off to labour on a road gang for part of his time away, reacquainting himself with a world in which money is too sparse to throw away on the empty self-gratification that tempted him before. Durham, who need talented young players more than ever, will hope it is all in the past. When Burnham passed fifty off 109 balls it was his first since July 2017. He and Bancroft added 149 in 46 overs. But then the balance of the day shifted again as both fell in consecutive overs towards the end of the middle session. Josh Tongue, with the second ball of a new spell, removed Bancroft, trapped in front for 70 trying to work to leg, then Morris, who was to be the bowler of the day, had Burnham caught behind for 76. When Leach then bowled Liam Trevaskis, Durham had slipped from 163 for 3 to 177 for 6.More rebuilding followed as Ben Raine and Ned Eckersley, reprising old Leicestershire partnerships, added 60 for the seventh wicket, but then, with the new ball taken, it became a Morris dance through the tail, the right-arm seamer dismissing both in consecutive overs and taking the last four wickets in the space of five overs as Durham were out for 273.Morris spent much of last season away from the first team remodelling a once-suspect action. His 6 for 53 followed his 7 for 45 in Worcestershire’s opening win over Leicestershire, so whatever remedial work he undertook seems to have worked.Chris Rushworth’s action could hardly be better honed. As if to demonstrate that fact, as Worcestershire began their reply, the Durham stalwart struck with his second ball to remove Daryl Mitchell.

Arsenal star with 0 starts since November could start over Smith Rowe

If Arsenal lose to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, they can surely wave farewell to any chance of winning the Premier League title.

Before the start of today's fixtures, the Gunners sit in third place, five points behind Jurgen Klopp's men.

A win, therefore, could see Mikel Arteta's side leapfrog Manchester City into second and move to within two points of the league leaders. We don't need to tell you just how big this clash is.

In the reverse fixture, Arsenal did well to negate the threat of Liverpool and with no Mohamed Salah on this occasion, they should be feeling confident. That said, this is a team who have looked inspired this season. Life will not be easy at the Emirates Stadium.

It will be interesting to see what sort of lineup Arteta fields this afternoon. It's unlikely we'll see widespread changes but one man that could see his place under threat is Emile Smith Rowe.

Smith Rowe's performance in numbers v Forest

During the January transfer window it looked as though Smith Rowe's days were perhaps numbered in north London.

A move to West Ham was being touted but that was batted away by Arsenal amid claims that the Englishman had allegedly seriously impressed the coaching staff during the club's warm-weather training camp in Dubai this winter.

It felt as though a start was imminent and against Nottingham Forest, he was handed a rare opportunity from the off. Did he take it? Yes, but not with great aplomb.

That has been the story of most players to feature in that number 8 role this season, but the 23-year-old did show strong flashes of what he's capable of. He picked up neat pockets of space and linked up well with teammates, ultimately finishing the 2-1 win at the City Ground with a 93% pass success rate.

Starting the Hale End graduate in a game where you're expected to dominate possession is all well and good and truth be told, Smith Rowe probably deserves a run of games.

However, with Liverpool coming to town, Arteta requires a different type of midfielder next to Declan Rice.

Arteta must unleash Arsenal's £90k-p/w "wizard" over Martinelli

The dynamic winger has been impressive in short spells this season.

Earlier in the week Thomas Partey was ruled out through injury again. The Ghanaian hasn't been seen since the 1-0 win over Manchester City back in October.

Detailing a fresh setback, Arteta noted: "With Thomas unfortunately we had a little setback a few days ago. He’s not going to be available in the squad. We’ll see if it’s a matter of days of weeks. But he had a little thing. I’m not a doctor, but he felt something in a very similar area and he wasn’t able to train the last few days."

Partey feels tailormade for this sort of game but with no threat of the former Atletico Madrid man being named on the teamsheet this time, Jorginho is the man the club should entrust alongside Rice.

The Italian last started the FA Cup tie with Liverpool a few weeks ago but due to injury and general preference, hasn't started a league match since a 3-1 win against Burnley in early November, nearly three months ago.

So why should the veteran start against Liverpool? Well, he offers a calming influence in games that often bring about chaos. After starring against Newcastle at St James' Park last term, Gary Neville said of Jorginho:

"The reason why Manchester United players and Pep Guardiola have said Paul Scholes is their favourite player was because in moments in the hardest atmosphere in a difficult away game those players are unique. They have the composure, the balance to get the team playing.

"That’s what Jorginho reminded me of – he was fantastic. Arsenal have gone up a lot in my estimation as I didn’t expect that [2-0 win v Newcastle]. I expected them to fall."

When Arsenal take on the big boys more often than not Jorginho has been trusted by Arteta and his coaching staff to deliver exactly what Neville described there.

Described as a "mental monster" by Dr Rajpal Brar – a notable character on social media – the Euros winner has already started against Man City, Chelsea, Newcastle and Liverpool this term. Last season, he also started against those three of those four teams. But how did he fare the last time the Reds played the Gunners? Pretty well as it happens.

Not only was the former Chelsea star metronomic but he was also combative in the middle of the park. Jorginho isn't just capable of dictating the play but a whopping eight duels won suggests he can also get stuck in.

Smith Rowe's time for more starts will no doubt come but on a massive occasion such as this, the midfield veteran is the man you need.

James Anderson defies glum forecasts to brighten Lancashire prospects

England seamer claims five-for despite delayed start as Derbyshire succumb to 153 all out

Jon Culley at Derby17-Jun-2019

James Anderson of Lancashire appeals•Getty Images

Unlike Worcester, which pays a heavy price for its glorious proximity to the Severn, Derbyshire’s home ground can normally handle a deluge with few far-reaching effects. Last week’s downpours were exceptional, though. Spectators encouraged by a warm, drying wind to anticipate a prompt start arrived to see a huddle of Lancashire bowlers toeing dark patches of turf at the Racecourse End, exchanging shrugs and shakes of the head.No one looked less enthused at the idea of running in than James Anderson, although England’s finest fast bowler seldom looks enthused even when he is. He bent down and touched the ground with the palm of his hand, warily examining the droplets of water that attached themselves. Six weeks away from what may be his last Ashes series, by which time he will have turned 37, you can imagine what thoughts were in his mind. Having made his senior Lancashire debut here in 2001, he may well have a soft spot for this ground but he had no wish to jeopardise his summer by turning his ankle in one. Yet his captain had already determined that, if there were to be any play, Lancashire would bowl first. There was no play before lunch. Showers were forecast for later. Yet by 1.40pm the groundstaff had squeezed out enough moisture for umpires Nick Cook and Ian Blackwell to determine that even limbs as vital to the national interest as Anderson’s would be no more than normally at risk. Under an overcast sky, the air nicely humid, Derbyshire batsmen were now wishing the officials had decided on a longer delay.Opening at the City End, Anderson’s line was not perfect at the start, although twice he thought he had Luis Reece, his one-time county team-mate, caught off the glove. His appeals were well supported by keeper and slips but Blackwell was unmoved.Anderson’s new-ball partner, that other evergreen, Graham Onions, was more on the money. Billy Godleman survived a confident shout for caught behind as the ball whistled close to the outside edge but was reprieved only momentarily, edging the next one to gully with a rather loose drive. It was not the Derbyshire captain’s first mistake of the day, having earlier signed off a teamsheet that included a player he had actually left out. Despite the late start, play was under way before the error was spotted. Informed over his earpiece, umpire Cook had to halt proceedings before informing his colleague and asking Dane Vilas, Godleman’s opposite number, if he was happy with Sam Conners playing instead of Tony Palladino.Having drawn first blood in this mini-contest with Anderson, his senior by just a couple of months, Onions surged ahead. Wayne Madsen, also tempted to drive, was taken at first slip by Keaton Jennings, whose height made a difficult catch look deceptively easy. Then Tom Lace, playing across a full length swinging delivery, was leg before.Derbyshire were 14 for 3. It was the kind of fragility their followers had easily envisaged against the Division Two leaders and Anderson was not even started. Onions took a breather with 3 for 9 off six but Anderson kept going, no hint of reluctance now. Reece, after his early survival, was beaten for pace and bowled; Harvey Hosein was trapped in his crease, trying to work away a full delivery. Now Anderson did rest and, for a while, it seemed a different game. Richard Gleeson, Lancashire’s leading wicket-taker before this match, was not selected, which says something about the strength of the Red Rose’s bowling resources. Yet neither Josh Bohannon, a skiddy seamer who adds also to the depth of batting, nor Saqib Mahmood could duplicate the control exerted by the new ball pair. Alex Hughes and Matt Critchley added 62 in 14 overs and, from 24 for 5, Derbyshire went to tea at 86 for 5.All changed again, however, as Anderson returned, refreshed, immediately afterwards. The fifth ball of his new spell accounted for Critchley, caught behind jousting outside off stump; the third over saw Hughes beaten by one that clipped off stump and Logan van Beek leg before to one that clipped his pad. Suddenly, for all his earlier foreboding, Anderson had his second five-for of the season, his 17th in first-class cricket for the county.”We did well to get out there are play,” Anderson said afterwards. “It was very wet and there were a few issues with the ground but once we did get out there it was not too bad under foot.”I thought we bowled really well to start with and having had them 25 for five I felt we could have pressed home that advantage a bit more than we did.”We felt we let them off the hook a little bit. You need all four bowlers to be on it to bowl sides out and maybe we did not have that today. But we are relatively happy with where we are.”It might have been worse for Derbyshire had Leus du Plooy’s unbeaten 39 not been supported with late-order runs from 20-year-old Conners on debut and Ravi Rampaul, the last two wickets adding 62. All out for 153 hardly felt like grounds for optimism, however.More rain, perhaps torrential, is on the radar for Tuesday into Wednesday, another test for the groundstaff. The local forecast is that Lancashire may not need much playing time to register a fourth win of the season, although Reece landed a late counter-punch with the wicket of Jennings.
