Spurs: Lilywhites missed out on £12m phenomenon who became better than Bale

There isn't really any doubt, Tottenham Hotspur have been embroiled in the dog days over the past several years, not quite sinking into the murky abyss but definitely in decline after the enthralling chapter with Mauricio Pochettino in the dugout.

But the mouldering mess left by Antonio Conte last season – sacked in March; the fourth managerial dismissal in as many years – has been wiped away by Ange Postecoglou, who really has had something of a transformative effect.

Tottenham's interminable wait for silverware has not yet ended but the mood has been completely restyled, with all of the summer acquisitions promising and hinting at prosperity, and the position at the top of the Premier League table reflective of that.

Harry Kane was sold to German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the summer in a move that appeared to hammer home the despondency at Spurs, but his sale has not hindered the fluidity that Postecoglou has been seeking to instil and there is every possibility that the club could be in for a truly remarkable season.

The last time Spurs lost a figurehead, it took two years to reclaim a place in the Champions League, with Gareth Bale's departure a poignant day for all affiliated with Tottenham.

How good was Gareth Bale?

Bale was signed for the Lilywhites from English rivals Southampton for a £10m fee in 2007; originally a left-back, he was always blessed with blistering pace and notable dribbling skills, and while he made a slow start with Spurs – failing to win in his opening 24 Premier League games – he was converted into a more offensive role and the rest was history.

Bale plundered 71 goals and 58 assists across 236 appearances over two spells for the former White Hart Lane side, with the 111-cap Wales icon's exploits catching the attention of Real Madrid, who fiercely pursued his signature and completed a deal in 2013 worth a world record £85m.

His feats in the Spanish capital saw him play a major role in one of the most remarkable periods of Los Blancos' history, notably winning five Champions League trophies and three La Liga titles.

He is very much a sensation and will forever hold a place in the hearts of Tottenham supporters near and far, but just a few years before he was signed, Spurs could have secured the services of an even better player: Cristiano Ronaldo.

Were Tottenham interested in Cristiano Ronaldo?

According to former Tottenham striker and talent scout Ronny Rosenthal, Ronaldo was suggested for transfer before he kickstarted his unbelievable career with Manchester United.

He said that he recommended the signing but that Spurs "didn't follow it up", with the Portugal phenom ultimately completing a £12m move to Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon as an 18-year-old.

How good is Cristiano Ronaldo?

Ronaldo is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of sporting talent. A prodigy. His feats will be remembered for centuries, and he will endure eternally in the history of the great game.

Having notably won five Ballon d'Ors, five Champions Leagues, three Premier League titles, three La Liga titles and the European Championships with his nation, 'CR7' has enjoyed quite the career, scoring 736 goals and supplying 231 assists at club level.

At Manchester United, he cemented himself as one of the world's finest talents and enjoyed prolific success before transferring to Real Madrid for a world-record £80m transfer.

There are many parallels between Ronaldo's and Bale's career paths but, undoubtedly, the 38-year-old, dubbed a "genius" by FIFA member Sunday Oliseh, has eclipsed Bale's commendable career.

In the Premier League alone the 201-cap, 123-goal Portugal sensation clinched 103 goals – including a 31-goal season that won him his first Ballon d'Or, though in Spain he has obliterated standards with 450 goals and 131 assists from 438 matches for the Santiago Bernabeu side.

Clearly, Ronaldo was on another level even to a star of Bale's distinction, with the one-time Southampton academy graduate even dubbed a "legend of the game" by journalist Zach Lowy for his incredible contribution to one of the most glittering periods in Real Madrid's distinguished history.

Quite simply, Ronaldo's just better. A diminutive ace known as Lionel Messi is the only rival for the prodigious talent, who may be 38 years old now but remains a prolific figure with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, having scored 25 goals and provided five assists from 30 matches for the club.

One of the most deadly and destructive goal threats and an intractable force for helpless defenders, the Portuguese machine has shattered records by the score and is probably the most talented footballer to ever play in the Premier League.

Had Tottenham only followed up on that intrigue and convinced a teenage prospect of the worth in joining the Lilywhites fold down the N17, it all could have been so different.

The awe that Bale struck into the hearts of the Tottenham faithful should be evidence enough of the kind of effect Ronaldo would've made, having been called “incredible” by erstwhile Red Devils teammate Gary Neville.

It's entirely conceivable that this intrinsic winner's presence at White Hart Lane would've provided the side with the fizz needed to secure silverware, with the 2008 League Cup the only major honour Tottenham have won since the turn of the millennia.

It's one to rue alright, and while the ship has steadied and actually charted a course to newfound heights under Postecoglou, that interminable wait for Spurs' silver-laden spurt could have been realised, had Cristiano Ronaldo's signature been signed.

Scotland coach Grant Bradburn: 'No surprise' we could compete

Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer said they had “two opportunities to make more statements” ahead of the T20Is against Pakistan

Peter Della Penna in Edinburgh11-Jun-20181:26

More eyes on Scotland after England win – Coetzer

Scotland’s win over England at the Grange was not just their first ever over the “Auld Enemy”. It was also the first time an Associate country had ever beaten a No. 1-ranked side, and predictably it has reignited a debate which continues to lurk around such encounters: whether or not more teams, specifically Associates, deserve to be included in the World Cup.For a country like Scotland, the question has a double-edged sword. Yes, they want to keep hammering home the point with performances like that on Sunday to prove they belong. But the continued ignorance of global cricket administrators that results in the question constantly being asked can be exhausting. It was a hot topic after Scotland’s win, but rather than dwell on their absence from next summer’s showpiece event, Scotland coach Grant Bradburn indicated that such victories aren’t introducing much into the debate that hasn’t already been said, considering his side has also beaten Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in the last 13 months.”It sends a message and now maybe confirms that there’s not only ten teams in the world that are reasonable cricket teams, but I think the world knew that looking at the way these guys played and the other Associate nations played in Zimbabwe [at the World Cup Qualifier],” Bradburn told ESPNcricinfo after Scotland’s six-run win. “There’s some fantastic Associate teams out there and hopefully today, if it helps the Associate cause then that’s fantastic.”I don’t think it’ll be any surprise to a lot of teams that we’ve competed well enough to stay in the game long enough and we’ve actually found a way to win the game. I don’t think it will come as any surprise because those who watched [the qualifier] have seen this team progress and personally I feel that the team were just bubbling away for a performance like that for quite some time. We got the conditions today and all of our batsmen appreciate conditions like that.”In past matches in which Associates have caused great upsets over Full Members, a constant theme has been that the underdog seized upon a good toss, bowler friendly conditions to skittle an unsuspecting opposition. Not so for Scotland. Their wins over Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in particular came on similarly flat batting tracks, where bowlers had to work hard for wickets while a stream of runs flowed.Against England, just as impressive as Scotland’s record-breaking total of 371, the highest ever by an Associate country, was the way their bowlers defended it. After Jonny Bairstow’s 54-ball ton got England off to a rip-roaring start, Mark Watt and Alasdair Evans built the pressure that eventually sparked a collapse for England to fall from 220 for 2 in the 27th over to 365 all out.Kyle Coetzer helped Scotland to a terrific start•Getty Images

“[Our batsmen] are all free-flowing shot-makers and they have the encouragement from us and they know their skills,” Bradburn said. “You put them on a good surface like that, it doesn’t really matter who is bowling and it happened to be the No. 1 team in the world. They’re a good team and it actually makes it sweeter that they played so well too.”You mentioned Jonny Bairstow, but there’s a number of players in their order that played magnificent contributions. Moeen Ali, I didn’t think the game was in our pocket until that wicket. It was a key wicket for me. I think our guys have been brewing for awhile.”Since the match, captain Kyle Coetzer has been inundated with messages from other players and captains across the Associate world, a typical example of the bond shared by players across emerging nations. Coetzer is mindful of the fact that when they perform the way they did Sunday, they are scoring a victory not just for themselves but enhancing the reputation of all other Associates by extension.”Prior to the game various other Associate players were messaging their messages of support and good luck and then afterwards they came flooding in even more after the game,” Coetzer said during the pre-series press conference ahead of the two T20Is against Pakistan starting on Tuesday. “I think that just shows how supportive every Associate member is of each other. In actual fact there’s been plenty of members of the English team messaging well done and good luck for the future and that will show the development of the game.”The messages of support and what’s come around from everyone, I think it’s been exceptional. We always want to support the Associate game but most importantly promote cricket as a special sport.”Whatever we do is great for Cricket Scotland but it’s great for the Associate world and there’s another two opportunities to make more statements. We’ve had messages flooding in from all around the world. Yeah it’s going to do wonders for the game in Scotland but it’s going to do wonders for the Associate game. It’s going to do wonders for the world game.”As for Calum MacLeod, Sunday’s Man of the Match after becoming the first Scotsman to score an ODI century against England, the win will go down as “one of the great days for Scottish cricket”. But he wants to make sure it’s not the end of the story.”Hopefully we use it as a springboard to kick Scottish cricket on,” MacLeod said. “Hopefully it’s a clear message to everyone watching that Associate cricket is strong and Scottish cricket is strong.”You just don’t know how it’s going to pan out. We’ve been crying out for more cricket and hopefully you always got the sense before that teams might add this game on. Now I hope it can be a catalyst that teams want to come and play us when they’re over in the UK and we can have more weeks and series like we do this week.”

Rachael Haynes and Elyse Villani hold nerve to dash Vipers' hopes

Loughborough marched onto their fifth win in sixth matches as their overseas stars took command of a stiff run-chase

Loughborough Lightning 174 for 7 (Villani 61*, Haynes 53) beat Southern Vipers 172 for 6 (McGlashan 55*) by three wickets
ScorecardAussie stars Rachael Haynes and Elyse Villani powered Loughborough Lightning to a fifth win in six matches to stretch their lead at the top of the Women’s Kia Super League and make their qualification for Finals Day look almost a formality.Haynes posted her second half-century of the competition before, in a dramatic finish, Villani crashed four and six off New Zealand all-rounder Suzie Bates after Lightning, chasing a challenging 173 to win, had gone into the last over still needing 11 more runs.Lightning had lost two wickets in the penultimate over as Jenny Gunn holed out to long-off and Lucy Higham was run out, but Villani kept her nerve to finish unbeaten on 61 after lofting Bates for a towering maximum backward of square to complete victory with two balls to spare. It was tough luck on Vipers, last year’s runners-up and the 2016 champions, who produced their best batting performance of the series in a bid to end a run of four straight defeats and keep alive their hopes of reviving their season.Vipers veteran Sara McGlashan posted her highest KSL score with some powerful striking in an unbeaten 55 off just 28 deliveries, including six fours and three sixes, with England’s Danni Wyatt weighing in with 34 as Vipers justified skipper Bates’s decision to bat first by recording their biggest score of the season.Lightning’s hopes of limiting their opponents to a much lower total were high after Vipers lost their two most dangerous batters for single-figure scores inside the powerplay were dismissed both Bates and Tammy Beaumont for single-figure scores inside the powerplay overs.Bates was caught on the mid-wicket boundary when she tried to go after Gunn, then Beaumont, back in the Vipers side after missing two matches because of a concussion injury, top-edged a pull-shot against Sophie Devine, Sarah Glenn safely pouching the catch.Wyatt and Mignon du Preez added 39 for the third wicket yet after Wyatt had holed out off a Glenn full toss in the 10th over and Du Preez had pulled a short ball from Georgia Elwiss straight to mid-wicket in the 13th, Vipers had lost their top-four batters for 83.But McGlashan took charge immediately, punishing former teammate Linsey Smith with four boundaries in an over as the left-arm spinner’s customary control deserted her.A nightmare over from Gunn cost 16 runs as the England seamer conceded 11 in wides, including five from each of two consecutive deliveries.Smith was on the receiving end again as Arran Brindle struck three fours in an over and though Elwiss broke the partnership when she trapped Brindle in front for 26 in the penultimate over, the pair had added 71 in 7.2 overs.McGlashan, the former New Zealand batter and wicket-keeper who retired from international cricket in 2016, finished with a flourish, smiting three huge sixes and a four off the last seven balls she faced, her second maximum off Devine’s last over completing her half-century from the final ball of the innings.Devine was an early casualty as Lightning began their reply but Haynes out on a display of high quality strokeplay and controlled power at the top of the innings.Haynes made 53 off 34 balls and shared a partnership with Amy Jones that helped Lightning to 55 for 1 in the powerplay, laying the foundation for victory.Jones fell for 31 from 18 balls, after which the onus rested on Villani’s shoulders to put her experience to good use.But she was well supported by her partners, who thwarted Vipers’ best efforts to keep Villani off strike and in the end her aggressive hitting, which brought her seven fours and two sixes, made sure her compatriot Haynes’ efforts did not go to waste as Lightning celebrated a third win in five days at the Haslegrave Ground.

Set for a scan: West Brom’s “fantastic” regular facing long spell out

West Bromwich Albion have been handed another injury blow to one of their most regular features, with a reliable journalist delivering an update on the player's fitness based on what he's heard from the Hawthorns.

What's the latest injury news at West Brom?

As it stands, Carlos Corberan has Semi Ajayi, John Swift, Daryl Dike, Jeremy Sarmiento, Josh Maja, Adam Reach and Martin Kelly all out on the sidelines with their own respective problems, and another casualty has now joined them in the treatment room.

The Baggies secured a much-needed 2-0 home victory over Queens Park Rangers in the Championship on Tuesday evening, but despite the positive result, there was a negative to occur for the boss in the form of losing one of his stars to injury.

Cedric Kipre was forced off the pitch after 86 minutes and was replaced by Caleb Taylor after contesting a high ball, which will cause a real concern among supporters because he’s been one of their most utilised players this season.

The Ivory Coast centre-back has started 12 out of the 13 games in the second tier since the start of the campaign (WhoScored – Kipre statistics), though if the following update is to be believed, the 26-year-old will have to wait a while longer before he’s making his next appearance.

Cedric Kipre injury update

Taking to X, Darren Witcoop shared an injury update on Cedric Kipre and confirmed that West Brom's defender is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines and that he will learn the extent of his problem when he travels for a scan in the near future.

"West Brom fear Cedric Kipre faces a long lay off with a serious knee injury. Kipre went against QPR tonight and the defender, who has been in good form with the Baggies, faces a scan to determine the extent of the injury."

West Bromwich Albion defender Cedric Kipre.

How good is Cedric Kipre?

According to journalist Josh Bunting, Kipre is a “fantastic” defender at this level, which he’s proven so far this season by averaging 3.6 clearances per game in the Championship (WhoScored – Kipre statistics), but that’s not all that he's capable of at the heart of the backline.

Standing at 6 foot 3, Corberan’s colossus has also won 14 out of his 23 tackles made since the start of the current term, which is not only the most but also the joint best success rate throughout the whole of the squad in the Midlands (FBRef – West Brom statistics).

Therefore, West Brom will know that losing the services of Kipre for the foreseeable future would be a huge blow if the worst possible news is confirmed following his scan, so there’s a chance that the boss may need to enter the market to find a replacement at centre-back during the upcoming transfer window in January.

Rangers: £4k-p/w "Rolls Royce" has seen his value soar at Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers ended a turbulent few weeks by finally replacing Michael Beale as the Ibrox side announced Philippe Clement as their new manager.

The Belgian arrives with a solid reputation having won three league titles in his homeland managing Genk and Club Brugge, while his latest spell saw him spend 18 months at AS Monaco, before being sacked a few months ago.

The Gers need some new ideas, and they need them fast if they have any ambitions of catching Celtic at the top of the Premiership table.

Clement will need to use all his tactical nous to get a tune out of the current crop of players, especially as confidence has hit an all-time low after winning just nine of their opening 16 matches of the 2023/24 campaign.

Beale failed to showcase any ready style of play or tactical identity and his summer signings failed to really hit the ground running, despite spending big money on the likes of Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers.

Clement has worked with some of the brightest young talent in Europe during his spell at Monaco, including Axel Disasi, Aurelien Tchouameni and Benoit Badiashile and this could give some of the academy stars at the Light Blues the confidence boost they need.

Indeed, several youngsters were given a chance by interim manager Steven Davis, most notably Zak Lovelace, Ross McCausland and Bailey Rice and these players could be future stars if they carry on their excellent progress.

It is perhaps another teenager who the Belgian may be most interested in, however, as Leon King remains one of the brightest products to emerge from the Gers youth system in the previous few years.

How much did Leon King cost Rangers?

The 19-year-old cost the club nothing having worked his way through the youth ranks at the Ibrox side, and he signed his first professional contract at the age of 16 back in March 2020.

Then sporting director Ross Wilson lavished praise on the teen, saying: “I am delighted we have an agreement with Leon King.

“Leon has been a priority for us and we are excited about his potential. He has been demonstrating that potential both for Rangers and Scotland and we are excited about his future.”

Glasgow Rangers defender Leon King.

Head of the academy Craig Mulholland even described King as “one of the UK’s most sought after young talents” once he signed his new deal, and it appeared as though the Gers had a stunning prospect.

How many appearances has Leon King made for Rangers?

Still only 16, King finally made his senior debut for the Gers as Steven Gerrard handed brought him on for James Tavernier with just 20 minutes to go against Falkirk in the League Cup back in November 2020.

His first Premiership appearances came during the end of the same season as the club cruised to their first league title in a decade and he finally made his first start against Dundee United towards the end of the season, while also even making the bench for the Europa League final and Scottish Cup final, claiming a winners medal in the latter competition.

Due to an injury crisis at the start of the 2022/23 season, King was given a chance to impress by Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and he featured 19 times until the winter break, gaining a wealth of experience in the process.

The youngster even ranked fourth for clearances per game (1.9) across the whole squad last term while also winning 58% of his total duels and averaging 48.4 touches per game, indicating that his physical presence was impressive, and he was always keen on getting on the ball.

Overall, King has made a grand total of 31 appearances for the Glasgow side and this should rise further this term.

These displays have seen his value skyrocket, and he has yet to turn 20.

How much is Leon King worth?

His impact in the first team last season led King to be valued as high as €4.2m (£3.6m) according to Football Transfers in March this year, and although this has dipped to a current valuation of €2.5m (£2.2m), it still represents a wonderful figure for someone so young.

Having emerged through the academy, thus being developed at the club, the Gers haven’t had to pay a fee for the defender, and he could well secure them a solid profit one day in the future.

Indeed, the centre-back has even been linked to clubs such as Manchester United and Newcastle United in the previous 12 months, with the two Premier League giants even sending scouts to watch him in action for the Light Blues.

This is a further indication of just how talented he is and that if he continues to be patient and work hard, he should soon get further opportunities under Clement, having failed to make an impression under Beale.

The £4k-per-week starlet was hailed by former Ibrox defender Alan Hutton before the start of the 2022/23 season, who said: “I think when I did watch him last season, he was like a big Rolls-Royce, very elegant on the ball. He came out, kept possession and looked very comfortable for someone of such a young age.

“With the likes of [Leon] Balogun leaving, Goldson signing a new contract, we know Souttar’s coming in, you need that competition for places to drive you on.

“So I’d like to see him try and break through, stamp his authority in this team, in his own way. I think he’s got all the potential and he ticks all the boxes for a modern-day centre-back.“

He has certainly faced plenty of competition this season and has yet to make a single first-team appearance so far, but this could all change under Clement.

The former Brugge manager has placed his trust in youth before and will surely do so again, especially with the sheer volume of talent he has to work with at Ibrox.

King has bided his time well this campaign and could well be rewarded sooner rather than later, especially with Clement’s penchant for developing young talent at his previous clubs.

Pakistan’s international players are set for a significant earnings rise after a fresh three-year remuneration agreement saw salary increases between 25% and 30% for players across the central contract spectrum. The earnings ratio will apply to centrally-contracted players in each of the four traditional categories, A to D. Players’ match fees will also go up by 20%.In addition, a new category ‘E’ has also been introduced, which a PCB media release said was to “recognise performers on the domestic circuit as well as to encourage the continuing development of emerging cricketers from the junior cricket level”.The central contracts list

The PCB also announced the list of 33 players who had been awarded central contracts – down from 35 last year. It sees very little change in terms of personnel from 2017’s list of the players with category A contracts. Babar Azam, who was in category B last year, has been promoted to the top bracket, while Mohammad Hafeez, who didn’t feature in any of Pakistan’s five ODIs against Zimbabwe despite being part of a much-rotated squad, drops down to category B. Azhar Ali, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed, Yasir Shah and Mohammad Amir retain their places as category A players. Most of Pakistan’s young crop of players, arguably pivotal to their resurgence in the shorter formats over the past year or so, find themselves in category B. Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan were both promoted from category C, while Faheem Ashraf jumped two places, getting into category B after being in the category D list last year. Hasan Ali retained his category B slot, with Asad Shafiq and Hafeez rounding off the category for 2018.Three players who were in category C the previous year were omitted from the centrally-contracted list of players altogether. The biggest casualty was Ahmed Shehzad, who is currently suspended for a doping violation and awaits a hearing. Sami Aslam, who found his Test place usurped by Imam-ul-Haq in Ireland and England earlier this year, is also out of a central contract. The same fate befell Sohail Khan, who has dropped significantly down the pecking order over the past year or so.Mohammad Rizwan, who was named in category D last year as Sarfraz’s deputy behind the stumps, drops down to the newly-introduced category E. He is the only wicketkeeper in the list of 33 players besides the captain. It serves to reinforce Pakistan’s lack of options in that department; Sarfraz has played every single Pakistan game in all formats since being rested for the limited-overs leg of Pakistan’s tour of Australia over 18 months ago.
