Scorchers bow out after Hurricanes pile up 210

The Hurricanes had lost their last three matches, lost their leading scorer D’Arcy Short to international duty, dropped Tymal Mills, but they still managed to dethrone the defending champions

The Report by Alex Malcolm01-Feb-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsHobart Hurricanes became the first team in BBL history to score more than 200 against Perth Scorchers, and thus the first team into this year’s BBL final. They dethroned the defending champions in staggering fashion. Before today, The Hurricanes had lost their last three matches, lost their leading scorer D’Arcy Short to international duty, dropped their highly touted import Tymal Mills. But they dismantled the Scorchers infront of 52,960 hostile fans at the new Optus Stadium in Perth.Matthew Wade made a sensational 71 off 45 balls at the top of the order to set up a record score in BBL knockouts, outshining Australia wicketkeeper Tim Paine in the process. Ben McDermott and Dan Christian clubbed 87 runs off the last six overs to pound the Scorchers into submission.Mills’ replacement Tom Rogers knocked over the Scorchers’ top three with extra pace and bounce. The Scorchers’ deep batting line-up folded under the weight of the enormous chase. The Hurricanes now wait to see whether they will travel to Adelaide or Melbourne for Sunday’s final.Agar’s absence one too many
The Scorchers have been able to absorb the loss of Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Andrew Tye, Jhye Richardson and David Willey at different stages throughout the tournament. But Ashton Agar’s loss was the straw that broke the camel’s back. He has been the Scorchers’ most economical bowler this season, conceding just 5.74 per over, but more than that he balances their pace-heavy attack. The Scorchers opted to use Mitchell Marsh as their fifth bowler and paid a heavy price. Firstly, he took the new ball to try and get through an easy over first up. He was wayward and got hammered for two boundaries by Wade. Secondly, it gave Wade a start before facing Mitchell Johnson and he capitalised. He smashed six more boundaries to all corners in 12 balls, including four off Johnson. While his team-mates struggled to adjust to the pace and bounce of the pitch, Wade batted with incredible fluency. Agar’s absence hurt the most in the four overs post the Powerplay. Wade and George Bailey struck a boundary an over and scored at 9.5 for four overs in a period where Agar normally concedes less than a run a ball.McDermott mauls the Scorchers
Wade’s innings set the game up but at one stage he appeared to need to go very deep to ensure a competitive total. At the end of 12 overs he had scored 69 of the Hurricanes’ 105 runs. He needed help, and McDermott provided it. McDermott got going with a six over mid-off off his ninth delivery. Wade fell in the 14th over but McDermott upped the ante. He launched Marsh, Johnson and Richardson into the stands five more times. Marsh ended up conceding 53 from his four overs. The power of the striking against such velocity stunned the Scorchers’ fans into silence. McDermott made 67 from just 30 balls. Christian continued his outstanding form with another superb cameo to set the Scorchers a mammoth target.Getty Images

Rogers the replacement
Rogers had only played two T20s prior to this semi-final. He gave up 50 runs in three overs on debut against Sydney Thunder and then took 1 for 29 in four overs against the Scorchers at the WACA. But Mills had bowled himself out of the team on form and Rogers was the first cab off the rank. He bowled the right lengths on a surface where anything slightly astray got punished. He hurried Michael Klinger into pulling to short fine leg after bowling four dots to him. He forced Cameron Bancroft and Shaun Marsh to pull to the long boundary and both men picked out a deliberately placed deep square leg. Rogers had 3 for 17 in three overs in the Powerplay and the Scorchers were 3 for 51.Bailey and Archer atone
Bailey and Jofra Archer were two of the chief architects of the calamitous loss to Melbourne Stars last Sunday that had nearly cost the Hurricanes a semi-final berth. During the eighth over of the Scorchers’ chase, two brilliant pieces of fielding all but sealed the Hurricanes place in a BBL final for the first time. Mitchell Marsh hooked Christian towards fine leg, where Archer charged in from the rope and dived forward at full stretch to take an incredible catch inches above the turf. Two balls later Ashton Turner hit a ball to Bailey at mid-off and took him on. Bailey accepted the challenge and produced a direct hit that ran Turner out by miles. Adam Voges and Hilton Cartwright never got going and both men fell before the end of the 10th over ,leaving the Scorchers at 7 for 68. They would never recover. Christian finished with 4 for 17 to cap another excellent all-round display.

Man City vs Nottingham Forest: Head-to-head, key stats & more

Manchester City play host to Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League. The two sides are rich in history and were both founded in the 18th century, so naturally, they've played each other a fair few times…

Today at Football FanCast, we've decided to take a look at the history of this fixture and any key stats that stand out heading into this weekend's clash.

Man City v Nottingham Forest: What's their head-to-head record?

Unsurprisingly, the reigning Premier League champions have racked up more wins in this fixture than their opposition, but it's perhaps closer than you'd imagine.

It's easy to forget, prior to City's 2008 takeover, the club wasn't regarded as one of the big boys like they are today, so they haven't dominated this fixture like you'd imagine.

Forest have had their fair share of victories against the Citizens and based on the overall head-to-head data, this weekend's clash shouldn't be seen as a complete shutout for Pep Guardiola's side.

Man City v Nottingham Forest: Who has more wins at the Etihad Stadium?

City's record against the East Midlanders, at home, paints a far more dominant picture, having only conceded defeat on ten occasions across 52 meetings.

Forest have found it tricky on their away travels in Manchester and Saturday's fixture will be expected to produce another defeat to add to the tally.

Guardiola will be hopeful of picking up the club's 25th home victory against Forest to extend their 100% record this season. City are the only club in the professional English pyramid to have not dropped points.

Man City v Nottingham Forest: Who has the more wins at the City Ground?

Nottingham Forest win this head-to-head battle. These two sides have produced a much more even affair at the City Ground but it is the Tricky Trees who have reigned victorious over their opposition on 22 occasions.

Interestingly, this fixture has played out far fewer draws.

Man City v Nottingham Forest: Who has the better cup record?

Again, it's the East Midlanders who win a second successive head-to-head battle, yet this time it's in cup competitions. Four of Forest's five wins against the Citizens have come in the FA Cup.

On the other hand, City have had much more fortuitous times against Saturday's opposition in the League Cup, a competition they've won eight times, with six of those coming in the last nine years.

The pair haven't met in a cup competition since January 2009, when Forest, who were in the Championship, defeated City 3-0 at the Etihad.

Man City v Nottingham Forest: What were the match results in the last five meetings?

18th February 2023 – Nottingham Forest 1-1 Manchester City: The last fixture between the pair produced a shock score draw at the City Ground as Man City's title charge was dealt a knock.

Bernardo Silva scored the opener in the first half and it looked set to be the winner until Chris Wood scored an equaliser with six minutes of the scheduled 90 left to play.

The crucial points for the hosts moved them five points clear of the relegation zone.

31st August 2022 – Manchester City 6-0 Nottingham Forest: The reverse fixture last season produced a completely different outcome as the Citizens thrashed the division's new boys.

Steve Cooper's side were dealt a harsh welcome to the Premier League in their first month back in the top-flight since 1999. Summer signing Erling Haaland netted a hattrick, Julián Álvarez scored a brace and full-back João Cancelo found himself on the scoresheet

3rd January 2009 – Manchester City 0-3 Nottingham Forest: The last meeting prior to the fixture in August 2022 came all the way back in 2009 in the third round of the FA Cup.

Forest were hovering above the Championship relegation zone heading into this clash against Premier League opposition and were huge underdogs.

But Nathan Tyson, Robert Earnshaw and Joe Garner all scored for the away side to complete a memorable 3-0 victory away at the Etihad.

30th March 2002 – Manchester City 3-0 Nottingham Forest: This meeting came in the second tier of English Football which is remarkable when you think about how far City have come.

Darren Huckerby, the Nottingham-born winger, scored a hattrick to seal a comfortable three points for the hosts, who gained promotion that year as champions under the stewardship of Kevin Keegan.

Forest, on the other hand, finished in 16th under Paul Hart.

28th October 2001 – Nottingham Forest 1-1 Manchester City: The reverse fixture saw the eventual title-winners held to a draw at the City Ground.

Chris Bart-Williams put the home side 1-0 up before Shaun Goater levelled the score just a minute later after a goalkeeping howler from Darren Ward.

Who has played for both Man City and Nottingham Forest?

Stuart Pearce (Forest 1985-1997; City 2001-2002): 78-cap England international Pearce was a 12-year servant for the East Midlanders. He made a whopping 327 appearances and scored 54 goals despite playing as a defender.

Pearce's one-season stay at City saw him make 43 appearances, helping the club gain promotion to the Premier League. He retired at the end of the campaign.

Ishmael Miller (City 2006-2007; Forest 2011-2014): Miller graduated through the Manchester City youth set-up but only went on to make 20 appearances for the club before being sold on a permanent deal to West Bromwich Albion.Four years after making the move to the West Midlands, Miller was picked up by Forest, who signed him for £1.2m as a 24-year-old. The forward only made 30 appearances for the club, despite being on their books for four years, scoring four goals. He spent time away on loan with Middlesbrough and Yeovil Town during that period before Blackpool signed him on a free transfer.Darren Huckerby (City 2001-2003; Forest 2003): Huckerby was a vital part of City's promotion-winning campaign to the top-flight in 2001/02, scoring 20 league goals in 40 appearances. His time at Forest was short, but sweet, making nine appearances and scoring five goals, on loan from the Citizens. Huckerby was set to join the East Midlands club on a permanent deal in the summer, had they gained promotion to the Premier League, but a playoff final defeat to Sheffield United scuppered those plans. What is Man City's biggest win over Nottingham Forest?

31st August 2022 – Manchester City 6-0 Nottingham Forest: Manchester City's biggest win over Forest was the aforementioned 6-0 drubbing at the Etihad last August.

Haaland scored a hat-trick, his second in as many games.

What is Nottingham Forest's biggest win over Manchester City?

23rd February 1980 – Nottingham Forest 4-0 Manchester City: Forest's biggest win over City came over 40 years ago in the top flight. In February 1958, they also recorded a 4-0 home victory.

Though, it's unlikely they'll record a result similar to that over Saturday's opposition whilst Pep Guardiola is at the reigns.

Man City v Nottingham Forest: When is it?

Manchester City host Nottinham Forest on Saturday 23rd September at 3pm UK time. City will head into this fixture as the favourites, as they do in almost every game.

After all, they are trebble-winners and are currently at the summit of the Premier League table. They are being widely tipped to win yet another league title and it's hard to disagree.

The Citzens have scored 14 goals and only conceded three which is a remarkable return but something we've come to expect from Pep Guardiola's men.

Erling Haaland has already netted seven goals and sits top of the goal scoring charts whilst summer signing Jeremy Doku got off the mark in a 3-1 away victory against West Ham United last weekend.

Forest, meanwhile, have enjoyed a steady start to their campaign. Two wins, one draw and two losses leave them in eighth place which is certainly a position they'd love to be in come May.

The East Midlanders narrowly avoided the drop last season and will be eager to avoid a second successive relegation battle this time around. With the exciting additions of young forwards Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudon-Odoi, they look well-placed to do so.

City will head into this fixture coming off the back of a midweek clash against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League and could suffer the typical European hangover. They'll need to be wary of the Forest's pace in transition that they used to exploit Arsenal last month.

The away side will need to be defensively resilient throughout the entirety of the match in order to keep the plethora of attacking talent at bay. Keeping Haaland quiet is something not a lot of sides have been able to do, so the centre-back pairing will certainly have their work cut out.

'Stanlake could be one of the all-time great fast bowlers' – Ponting

The former Australia captain, who had worked with Billy Stanlake as the team’s assistant coach in the Trans-Tasman T20 tri-series, was impressed with the 23-year old’s pace and bounce

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who had worked with Billy Stanlake as the team’s assistant coach in the Trans-Tasman T20 tri-series, believes that the 23-year old could be one of the “all-time great fast bowlers.””I just love the look of what he’s got,” Ponting told the Cricket Australia website. “He’s almost seven feet tall, bowls close to 150 kilometres an hour, he can swing the new ball. He’s got a little nasty streak in him as well – he likes bowling bouncers.”When we see him get a bit more of a tank and grow into his body a bit more and put on a little bit of weight, I think he’s someone that could be one of the all-time great fast bowlers. That’s all there ahead of him, we just hope he stays in one piece and becomes the kind of cricketer we all think he can be.”Stanlake had played only two first-class matches – the last of them in 2015 – and four List A games when he received his maiden call-up to the Australia squad, for the home ODIs against Pakistan in 2017. More recently in the T20I series against England and New Zealand, Stanlake impressed with his rapid pace and bounce. In all, he claimed eight wickets in five matches at an economy rate of 8.30.Having taken 19 wickets in 17 matches for Adelaide Strikers in the past two BBL seasons at an economy rate of 6.77, he has established himself as a key bowler in T20 cricket. After playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL in 2017, he was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad for USD 78000 (INR 50 lakh) in the auction last month. And last week, he was signed by Yorkshire for the T20 Blast.Injuries – notably a succession of stress fractures and a toe infection that led to talk of an amputation – have limited Stanlake’s chances in red-ball cricket. But Ponting felt the fast bowler has what it takes to excel in all formats. “Billy’s in his early 20s now, just starting to fill into his body. I know Cricket Australia have got every intention of looking after him as well as they can and making sure they do bulk him up and don’t break him too soon.”I know coming out of the Big Bash and even being around this group, we’ve been trying to pump his loads up to get him to bowl seven or eight overs a day.”But I’m sure if there’s an opportunity for Billy to play a Shield game at the back end of the season, I think we’d all be silly not to let him have that opportunity.”

Arsenal: "Exceptional" player now willing to leave in January

Arsenal could be rocked by the departure of a first-team star in the January transfer window, with one of Mikel Arteta's key players now willing to leave the club.

Which Arsenal players could leave in January?

In the summer transfer window, Arsenal managed to trim down their squad significantly, sanctioning the sales of Granit Xhaka, Folarin Balogun and Matt Turner, amongst a number of other players, but there were a few they did not manage to get off their books.

Cedric Soares remains at the Emirates Stadium, despite the Gunners being willing to sell him in the summer, which indicates the 32-year-old could be on the move in January, should he fail to prove himself to Arteta over the next few months.

At one stage, it appeared likely that Thomas Partey was going to follow midfield partner Xhaka out the exit door, amid widespread interest from elsewhere, with a Saudi side making an offer of personal terms, while Juventus were also named as potential suitors.

However, Arteta quashed the rumours linking Partey with a move away, saying. When asked whether the midfielder was still in his plans, the manager said: "Without a question of a doubt. Thomas is a super important player for us and for me. I want him to be part of the team. That’s for sure."

Although the Ghanaian ultimately remained at Arsenal in the summer, there have been recent indications he could push for a move in the January transfer window, with Football Insider reporting he is willing to leave the club on one condition.

If the central midfielder is no longer part of Arteta's first-choice XI, he is ready to seek pastures new this winter, as he fears he is no longer part of the Gunners' best side for the first time since he arrived at the club three years ago.

If the 30-year-old, who has featured at right-back this season, falls out of favour with Arteta, he would consider a move away in the next window, and Juventus could be waiting in the wings, considering they are long-term admirers.

Is Thomas Partey leaving Arsenal?

Football Transfers report that Arteta and Partey have reached a mutual agreement that the club will listen to bids in the January transfer window, which indicates the Ghana international's time in north London could be coming to an end.

The "exceptional" midfielder has been a good servant to Arsenal, being ranked by Sofascore as the club's fourth-best performing player in the Premier League last season, but they should not stand in his way if he makes it clear he wants to leave.

At 30-years-old, the former Atletico Madrid man is about to enter the latter stages of his career, and it could be wise to cash-in on him in January, particularly considering Arteta is already blessed with a number of solid midfield options.

Declan Rice's arrival means Partey has been shifted to an unfamiliar right-back role this season, featuring in that position on three occasions, so it is no wonder he is thinking about leaving, and the Gunners should let him leave if a suitable bid arrives.

Root to discuss Stokes' Test vice-captaincy

James Anderson took over the role for the Ashes in Stokes’ absence, but the allrounder’s return to the fold for the New Zealand tour means it is a situation that needs to be addressed

Ben Stokes’ position as England’s Test vice-captain will be discussed in the next couple of weeks, following his return to international cricket.Stokes was not stripped of the title in the wake of the incident in Bristol last September that led to him being charged with affray to which he pleaded not-guilty last month.James Anderson took over the role for the Ashes in Stokes’ absence, but the allrounder’s return to the fold for the New Zealand tour means it is a situation that needs to be addressed by Test captain Joe Root and coach Trevor Bayliss ahead of the two matches against New Zealand at the end of the March.Stokes was not the vice-captain of the one-day side – that role belongs to Jos Buttler as Eoin Morgan’s deputy – so a decision was not needed when Stokes made his England comeback in Hamilton.”That’s a decision we’ve not agreed yet,” Root said of the vice-captaincy role. “I think when we get together as a group me and Trevor will discuss a few things but that’s not been discussed [yet].”It could be a tricky balancing act to strike given Stokes’ case is still moving through the legal system, with the first Crown Court date on March 12 – which Stokes won’t attend while he stays on tour in New Zealand. On the field, the early stages of Stokes’ return have been a success. Following an encouraging first outing with the ball in Hamilton, where two wickets almost turned the game for England, he produced a Man-of-the-Match all-round display in Mount Maunganui with an unbeaten 63 to seal victory, alongside two wickets and a brace run outs.Stokes spoke of the emotion he felt after his five-month absence and the privilege of playing for England. He has quickly slotted back into the set-up with team-mates unaware of him being distracted by the lingering off-field issues.”All I can say is what I’ve seen of him coming back into the environment and he’s worked his nuts off as we expected him to,” Root said. “He’s gone about things exactly how you’d expect a really good professional to do and that sort of standard in training is why you get the performances on the field.”He worked really hard back home in Durham to make sure when he did get his opportunity to come back and play he was ready. He loves playing for England and you can see that in the way he plays. He leaves nothing out there on the field, he’s really dedicated to this sport and it’s really nice to be able to look back on the last game and see him have such an influence on the result.”In the build-up to the one-day series the talk had been about how confident Stokes was looking in the nets, but no amount of training can replicate match situations. His first knock of 12 was scratchy but in the second match he showed off some trademark shots, including a straight drive for six off Trent Boult. He has yet to be used for his full 10 overs – sending down two spells of four overs in each match – but he has pushed into the 140kph bracket on occasions.”It’s testament to just how good a player he actually is, to have such a period out of the game and come straight back and perform how he has shows the skill level of the individual really,” Root said. “It’s good to see him back playing, it really is.”
