Leicester Can Land Mavididi Heir With £7.9m Transfer Swoop

Leicester City have enjoyed a strong start to the 2023/24 campaign as some of their new signings have helped them to win all three of their Championship fixtures so far.

Who have Leicester signed this summer?

Enzo Maresca has been able to bolster his playing squad with six additions since his appointment as head coach after a spell with Manchester City's coaching staff.

Stephy Mavididi, Harry Winks, Mads Hermansen, and Conor Coady have all come through the door on permanent deals, whilst Callum Doyle and Cesare Casadei have joined on loan.

That may not be the end of their business, though, as they were recently touted with an interest in Newell's Old Boys winger Brian Aguirre, who has reportedly been valued at $10m (£7.9m).

How good is Brian Aguirre?

The 20-year-old whiz is a talented young prospect who should not be brought in with the expectation of being able to make an immediate and significant impact on the pitch.

Instead, he should be viewed as a long-term project who could be the eventual heir to Mavididi's position on the left flank as he is five years younger than the summer signing from Montpellier.

Aguirre has only played 42 senior club career games and is yet to play outside of his home country, Argentina, which means that it could take him time to adapt to football and life in England.

Leicester winger Stephy Mavididi.

Therefore, the exciting gem could be ideally suited to be a back-up to Mavididi initially as it would afford him time to adjust to his new surroundings without the pressure of being required to hit the ground running on the pitch.

The English forward has enjoyed a terrific start to life at the King Power and his performances suggest that there will be no immediate need for Aguirre to step up.

He has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.47 across three Championship matches this season and produced one goal and one assist, to go along with 1.7 key passes per game for his teammates.

Only Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (8.23) has averaged a higher Sofascore rating for Leicester so far and this shows that the former Arsenal prospect has been one of Maresca's outstanding performers.

This could also make him the dream mentor for Aguirre as Mavididi is proving himself to be a fantastic winger at this level who could impart his wisdom to the 20-year-old ace to help him develop his own skills over the coming years.

The Old Boys forward, who scout Antonio Mango described as "compelling viewing", showcased his potential during the U20 World Cup earlier this year as he averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.13 and contributed with one goal and two 'big chances' created in three appearances for Argentina.

Aguirre, who has assisted five goals in 42 games for his club, seemingly has the capability to score and create chances from a left wing position but would need to translate that over to first-team football in England on a regular basis in order to be a huge success at the King Power.

Training alongside and learning from Mavididi could play a crucial role in his development, given how impressive the 25-year-old hotshot has been this season, and allow him to become the long-term heir to that position in the team if Maresca can secure his services.

Leeds: Farke Can Find Dream Piroe Partner With Swoop For 6 ft 1 "Phenomenal Talent"

Leeds United officially completed their fifth signing of the summer transfer window on Thursday as they announced the arrival of Joel Piroe from Championship rivals Swansea.

Who have Leeds signed this summer?

Whites boss Daniel Farke had already bolstered his side with the additions of Joe Rodon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, and Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow, and Sam Byram on permanent deals.

Piroe has now joined that list for a reported fee of £10m from the Swans to improve the German head coach's options at the top end of the pitch this season.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

That may not be the end of their business, however, and another player who could be on his way to Elland Road if the club opt to follow up on their interest in him is USMNT star Josh Sargent.

How good is Josh Sargent?

The 23-year-old striker has proven to be a consistent Championship performer so far this season and one that could come in and strike up an exciting partnership with Piroe at the top end of the pitch.

Sargent is adept at playing out wide on the right or as a centre-forward, and this means that Farke could utilise him in tandem with the Dutch marksman, or as competition for him throughout the year.

The Norwich City star, who was signed by the German boss in 2021, has enjoyed a terrific start to the season as he has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.27 and chipped in with two goals alongside one assist in three appearances.

This comes after the former Werder Bremen hotshot racked up 13 goals and five ‘big chances’ created in 37 Championship starts for the Canaries throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

Norwich striker Josh Sargent.

These statistics show that the American international has the quality to provide goals and assists at an impressive rate at this level, which could provide Farke's team with a significant boost as Leeds struggled for goals in the Premier League last term.

No current Whites forward managed more than five top-flight strikes and having Piroe and Sargent up front could allow supporters to leave any worries about a lack of a goal threat behind as they are both proven Championship scorers.

The £10m-rated Dutchman plundered an outstanding 19 goals for Swansea during the 2022/23 campaign and that came after he racked up 22 league goals during the previous season.

Piroe knows how to find the back of the net on a regular basis from a centre-forward position and has the quality to be Farke's outstanding goalscoring option at the top end of the pitch, if he is able to translate his form for the Swans over to Yorkshire.

Sargent's versatility means that he could slot in alongside the 24-year-old hotshot and this could provide Leeds with a fearsome duo in the final third, as opposition defences would have two huge goal threats to worry about each match, which was far from the case for the club last term with their lack of consistent goalscorers.

Therefore, the 6 foot 1 finisher, who was recently described as a "phenomenal talent" by teammate Ashley Barnes, could be a fantastic signing for the Whites and Farke should pursue a deal for his former striker in spite of the signing of Piroe.

GALO ON FIRE

O time variava taticamente o jogo inteiro.

GALO DIMINUI A PRESSÃO

No segundo tempo, o Santos voltou melhor. Controlando a bola no meio-campo e fazendo valer a superioridade numérica.

Hodge named Kings XI Punjab's head coach

Australia’s T20 veteran signs three-year deal, will report to Virender Sehwag

Nagraj Gollapudi13-Dec-2017

Cricket Australia

Kings XI Punjab have appointed Brad Hodge, the former Australia batsman, as their new head coach. Hodge, who held a similar role with Gujarat Lions for the last two seasons, will report to Virender Sehwag, the franchise’s mentor-cum director of cricket. The head coach’s job was informally held by Sehwag after Sanjay Bangar resigned in December 2016. Kings XI had a mixed 2017 season, where they were in the reckoning for the play-offs until they lost to Rising Pune Supergiant, the runners-up, in their final league match. At 42, Hodge continues to feature as an active player and will be playing for Melbourne Renegades in the 2017-18 Big Bash League. A current Twenty20 player with an impressive body of work, Hodge is also known for his tactical nous and has consistently been sought after in domestic T20 tournaments around the world. In his first year as coach at Gujarat Lions, in 2016, Hodge helped the franchise finish with the most number of wins at the end of the group phase. However, Gujarat were knocked out of the Qualifier 2 by eventual champions Sunrisers Hyderabad. Hodge was left frustrated in IPL 2017 as injuries to marquee players like Dwayne Bravo and lack of quality replacements meant Gujarat finished second from bottom. However, a new franchise now presents him with a new challenge with Ness Wadia, one of the co-owners of Kings XI, wanting him to build the team. “We have signed a three-year agreement with Brad, who will be our head coach,” Wadia said. “Viru [Sehwag] will be actively involved, too, as our director of cricket.”Wadia also said the franchise would invest in creating a stable set-up now that the team had started to make operational profits. “We really see that after 10 [the tenth season], now that more money is coming, now that the model is bringing in operational income and profit, we can build a proper franchise. We are hopeful of taking things forward and get the best team possible.”

Leicester team news: Maresca has outstanding Ndidi replacement

While relegation from the Premier League can result in a hangover, especially at the start of the season, Leicester City have got over theirs pretty quickly.

The Foxes are enjoying life back in the Championship and are the only club in the division to have a 100% record intact following victories over Coventry City, Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City and Rotherham United.

A key pattern has formed across their opening four matches and that is their ability to grind out results despite not being at their best.

Leicester have won each of their matches so far by a one-goal margin but given the quality at their disposal, perhaps it's only a matter of time before their attack explodes into life, and Hull City will be hoping it isn't against them on Saturday.

What's the latest Leicester team news?

Having made an impact in City's last two wins as a substitute, on loan Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei was rewarded with his first start of the season against Tranmere in the cup, and he certainly stamped his mark on proceedings.

The 20-year-old put in an impressive display, showcasing his ability to unlock defences by providing the assist for Wilfred Ndidi's second-half strike.

Leicester manager Enzo Maresca.

This performance has earmarked him as a potential starter against Hull as Leicester rested a whole host of key personnel on Tuesday night, including Kasey McAteer, Jannik Vestegaard, Mads Hermansen and Kelechi Iheanacho.

While Enzo Maresca is likely to shuffle that quartet back into the starting XI against Hull, the performance of defensive midfielder Hamza Choudhury has provided Maresca with a selection headache.

After anchoring the midfield with Harry Winks for the most part and excelling in the areas he is known for, making slide tackles, intercepting play between the lines and blocking shots, Choudhury could have forced his way into Maresca's reckoning.

Will Hamza Choudhury start against Hull City?

During Leicester's final three campaigns in the Premier League, Choudhury only managed 16 appearances and last season he enjoyed a productive loan spell at Watford, featuring 36 times in the Championship.

The 25-year-old, who was once described as "outstanding" by former manager Brendan Rodgers, still has a lot to give at this level and under the guidance of the Italian, can quickly become an important figure at the heart of the Foxes midfield.

With regular opportunities, the tackling machine and excellent interceptor can offer Leicester something different to the technically astute Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Harry Winks and Casadei.

Former Watford loanee Hamza Choudhury.

More importantly, however, he could come into the team at the expense of the aforementioned Ndidi, who would no doubt have been distracted by recent speculation surrounding a potential move to Nottingham Forest before the transfer deadline last night.

During his spell at the Hornets last season, Choudhury excelled at the base of their midfield, as Ndidi has throughout the years for the Foxes, and he reined in the plaudits for his ability to sniff out danger, stop the opposition in their tracks and manoeuvre possession to the explosive Joao Pedro and Ismaila Sarr.

When compared to his positional peers in the 2022/23 Championship season, Choudhury excelled defensively, ranking in the top 1% for interceptions per 90 (2.40), top 3% for tackles per 90 (3.20) and the top 11% for shots blocked (0.53) while his ability to progress possession shouldn't be understated, finishing in the top 13% for pass completion (82.9%), as per FBref.

While these stats are perhaps an inclination that Watford faced more attacks than Leicester would, there is no doubt that Maresca's side have been missing the bite of Choudhury in their midfield.

The former England U21 international would help reinforce their engine room with more steel and provide the Foxes with an opportunity to keep more clean sheets, having conceded in three of their four league matches so far.

For all of their technicians and attacking flair, it's just as important to have a player who can complement their attacking prowess with an ability to win the ball back and give it to those players higher up the pitch.

This was a point that has been echoed previously by current Hull manager Liam Rosenior. During his time working as a pundit for Sky Sports, he covered the England U21's European Championships in 2019 and heaped praise on Choudhury during this tournament.

He said: "He's been absolutely outstanding at this all season, he's someone who I first really enjoyed watching at Burton on loan and I didn't know if he was going to break into Leicester's team but credit to Claude Peul, credit Brendan Rodgers, I love seeing young players get chances and he is so important to this England team because they have nobody else there to win the ball back."

"You look at Manchester City when Fernandinho is out of the team, they're not the same team. Those ball-winning midfield players who can dictate the ball and make passes into forward areas are crucial. Choudhury has that role."

If Choudhury can reach the ceiling that his formative years promised, then Leicester can quickly forget about Ndidi and unleash their midfield beast onto the rest of the Championship.

Format switch helps revive Moeen

After losing confidence during the Ashes, Moeen Ali has found some release with England’s return to their freewheeling one-day cricket

Daniel Brettig15-Jan-2018

Among all the members of England’s touring party, no one was looking more eagerly for a way out of his Ashes rut than Moeen Ali. Outbowled by Nathan Lyon, who also became his nemesis at the batting crease, Moeen was almost completely ineffectual after starting the series well enough in Brisbane. In the weeks that followed, Moeen admitted losing confidence in himself as a cricketer, but he was part of the ODI team’s collective surge in the opening match at the MCG on Sunday, bowling 10 economical overs and then walking out to hit the winning runs from the bowling of a more modest offspinner in Travis Head.Moeen eager for IPL experience

As the ECB has gradually relaxed the restrictions on contracted players going to the IPL, so too has Moeen Ali’s interest increased. This year all players are permitted to go to the Twenty20 tournament for seven weeks, with limited-overs specialists allowed to stay for the duration, and Moeen has joined the likes of Joe Root in nominating for the auction.
“I have never put my name in before and heard so much about it,” he said. “It’s a good opportunity to play with other players from around the world and learn from them. I just want to experience it and improve my cricket. I think it makes players better. People have come back with a lot of confidence from the experience. I think it’s a must we do that. Personally, if I don’t go it won’t be the end of the world. I would love to play but if I don’t, no problem.”
Should he be picked up, Moeen said he was not overly concerned by the potential for burnout. “If I feel like I have done too much I will speak up,” he said. “I will see how I am going. But I am going home after this international series and having a break for a couple of weeks which will be nice. So let’s see how I feel.”

Lyon’s absence reflects his current status as a Test match specialist, and Moeen said he had revelled in the change-up as part of a team with clear roles and burgeoning confidence that their best, epitomised by Jason Roy’s England ODI record score, is world-class.”It was nice to move to a different format of the game because the pressure was less, if that makes sense. Bowling to someone like [Aaron] Finch is a great challenge and I felt that having five bowlers meant it was a key role for me,” Moeen said as England travelled up to Brisbane for Friday’s second match. “Something I pride myself on is to go for less boundaries than everybody else. And I did. My confidence from yesterday has gone up a little bit. Hopefully it can keep climbing.”As a team we know we can beat anybody anywhere, whereas in Test cricket all round the world playing away is very difficult. Even if you believe it’s possible it is difficult to go away and win. The way Australia played throughout the whole five Test matches. They had pace we didn’t have, they had a gun spinner bowling brilliantly – we didn’t – they had batters who scored hundreds and double-hundreds regularly. Again, we didn’t. They were too good for us whereas in the one-day stuff we have players who can break records, as we saw yesterday.”It just feels like we can genuinely beat anybody anywhere. The attitude is obviously different because it’s a different sort of cricket, so it’s been refreshing. When J-Roy was batting yesterday we were egging him on to beat the record. When he was on about 120 everyone thought he was going to do it. In the back of our heads we have these records but the first focus is to win the game and we know if someone like J-Roy bats the way he does we can beat anybody in the world. And we have players like that all throughout the line-up.”Reflecting on his Ashes series, which began with a finger problem that restricted his ability to prepare, Moeen said things had seemed more difficult and success more elusive the harder he tried to strive for it. And as much as those close to him tried to help, any genuine progress needed to come from within, and that was an escalating struggle over the course of the five Tests while he wrestled with the unmistakable sense of letting down Joe Root’s team.”That was the most disappointing thing for me. I feel like I was letting the team down, the fans down,” Moeen said. “The Barmy Army was singing the whole time. When your confidence is low, and you are trying to perform the best you can but it’s not happening it is most disappointing. It’s not that you are not scoring runs or not getting wickets. It’s just that you feel as an individual you are letting your team-mates down. I am sure a few of the guys felt the same thing but that was my biggest fear.”When you lose a bit of confidence in your own game sometimes you try harder and it can be that the harder you try the worse it gets. That’s what was happening. You try everything – different approaches going into bat, be positive, but nothing really came off and like I said the harder I tried the worse it was getting. These things happen, and you can learn from them.”When you are losing and not playing well, once it’s done it’s not like a burden [lifted] but you can relax a bit. The intensity is quite high and people talking about you all the time gets to you, even though I am somebody that doesn’t listen too much or read too much. It’s pretty difficult to get away from it and you start doubting yourself as a player. The thing that you have to realise though is that bad performances don’t make you a bad player. So you just have to somehow believe in yourself and keep trying to get back to where you know you can be.”The mental release of the end of the Ashes coincided with the endorphins released by training with a limited-overs team that has gained plenty of respect around the world, notably from Australia’s captain Steven Smith after the MCG match. Moeen said that the notion of learning from opponents ran both ways, for England in the Tests as much as for Australia in ODIs, and that a key to limited-overs success had been a sense of fun running through the whole squad.”It’s fun. Very enjoyable,” Moeen said. “There have been times when we have had disappointments as well, but we have had less of those in the last few years and it’s a great environment to be around.”We watched them and we can learn from the way they played. Australia in the Ashes was a fantastic team. In all departments they outplayed us and we struggled big time and so for us to play the way we played yesterday and beat them was brilliant. We are 1-0 up after one game and our challenge is to do what they did to us in the Test matches now. We’ve got to be a little bit better at that as a team. We know that but the main thing is to win the series, learn and improve from here going forward.”

Michael Beale replacement: Rangers could hire their very own Postecoglou

Glasgow Rangers head coach Michael Beale appears to be walking on thin ice after two disappointing results ahead of the first international break of the 2023/24 campaign.

What's the latest on Michael Beale's future?

The Daily Record recently reported that chairman John Bennett will resist calls to sack the English manager before the Gers return to action against St. Johnstone this weekend.

It was stated that the Light Blues chief would like to offer Steven Gerrard's former assistant the chance to put things right over the coming weeks.

Rangers boss Michael Beale.

However, it was also written that Bennett's backing is unlikely to last too long if results do not improve after damaging defeats to PSV and Celtic in their last two outings, the former of which knocked the side out of this season's Champions League.

Who could replace Michael Beale at Rangers?

The Rangers chairman could find the club's own version of former Celtic head coach Ange Postecoglou in a swoop for Yokohama manager Kevin Muscat.

Amid uncertainty over Beale's future at Ibrox, the Scottish giants have been linked with an interest in Muscat, who is currently managing in Japan.

Ange Postecoglou

The Hoops snapped up Postecoglou from Yokohama after the experienced boss won one J1 League title in three-and-a-half years in charge of the club.

His spell in Japan came after the Greek-born mastermind, who typically deploys a 4-3-3 formation, failed to win a title in little over one season with Melbourne in his home country.

Celtic gambled on him being able to adapt to life in Scotland and it worked out brilliantly as the 58-year-old won five domestic trophies in two seasons, which included a treble during the 2022/23 campaign that led to a move to Premier League side Tottenham this summer.

Bennett could now repeat the masterclass that their Old Firm rivals played with Postecoglou by securing a move for his compatriot Muscat.

Yokohama F. Marinos manager Kevin Muscat.

Interestingly, the 50-year-old manager has followed a similar path to the former Bhoys chief as he has also managed Melbourne and Yokohama in his career to date.

Muscat lifted one A-League title in just under six years with Melbourne and endured a short stint with Sint-Truiden in Belgium before he made the move to Japan, where he has won one title in less than three years.

This shows that the former Rangers and Wolves defender is capable of leading a team to league success, as he has proven himself in multiple countries. On the other hand, Beale is yet to win a single trophy in any country in his short managerial career to date.

Analyst Petar Petrov described him as an "evolving" boss and suggested that the former Australia international's attacking style of play and coaching ability would make him a "perfect" hire for the Light Blues.

Muscat, who also prefers to use a 4-3-3 formation, could, therefore, be an excellent appointment for Rangers if they decide to part ways with Beale if results do not turn around.

He could be the Gers' own version of Postecoglou by coming into Ibrox to turn the tide in Glasgow and get the club back to winning titles and trophies whilst playing an attacking brand of football.
