Everton Closing On Deal For "Special" £30m Dynamo

Everton are homing in on a deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Hugo Ekitike this summer, with recent reports hinting that an official transfer bid could be forthcoming.

What's the latest on Hugo Ekitike to Everton?

That's according to Fabrizio Romano, who has revealed that the Premier League side are hoping to lure the 21-year-old to Goodison Park with a loan deal that can become mandatory.

The Frenchman has reportedly been informed that he is free to leave by the Ligue 1 champions, though they will demand €35m (£30m) for the dynamic striker and have made it known that Sean Dyche's side will have a wave of competition for his signature.

"Everton have concrete interest in Hugo Ekitike. Told negotiation will take place over loan deal with buy option clause that can become mandatory," he tweeted. "Terms of the deal and numbers not discussed yet, still at early stages with both PSG and player side."

Newcastle United agreed to an initial €30m (£26m) deal to sign Ekitike one year ago only for the player to ultimately reject the Magpies, but offered a starring role on Merseyside, he might be inclined to finally make the leap across the English Channel.

Who is Hugo Ekitike?

Last summer, Ekitike joined PSG from Stade Reims after impressing in his homeland and scored four goals and four assists apiece, starting just 14 times across all competitions.

Before this, he caught the eye with Reims and plundered 11 goals and five assists during the 21/22 campaign, including ten strikes from just 15 starts in Ligue 1.

With a £15m deal for Sporting Lisbon striker Youssef Chermiti, aged 19, also close to being agreed upon, Dyche is clearly looking to bolster the offensive ranks with gems made to last, and Ekitike could spend the next chapter of the club's history growing into a first-rate phenom.

Hailed for having "bags of talent" by Ligue 1 journalist Lee Davey, the £79k-per-week ace has exhibited his cutting edge in the French top-flight and also boasts the rounded skill set to thrive on Merseyside.

Indeed, as per FBref, the forward ranks among the top 4% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 4% for assists, the top 2% for interceptions, the top 19% for tackles and the top 19% for blocks per 90.

Standing at 6 foot 2, Etikite's best offensive attribute is probably his movement in the danger area, finding space in the penalty box and utilising his electric changes of pace to dart away from the opposition.

Given his fluidity and aptitude at finding opportune moments in decisive phases of play, the PSG starlet could find his perfect Goodison Park partner in Dwight McNeil, whose creativity and ball-playing skills from the wing could provide him with a steady stream of support.

McNeil signed for the Toffees from Burnley for £20m last summer and scored seven goals and provided three assists from 28 starting Premier League displays, and given that the 23-year-old has been described "magnificent" by scout Ryan Williams after a brilliant purple patch in the late phase of the season, a continuation of that form this year could pay dividends for him and Ekitike, should he join the fold.

McNeil created an average of 1.4 key passes per game in the Premier League last season and with this consistent output, he could allow Ekitike to flourish.

Likewise, the regularity of Ekitike's assists could benefit McNeil's own game after he enjoyed the most productive goalscoring season of his career to date last term, and a very "special" – as the PSG gem has already been called by former Reims manager Óscar García – could be born to spearhead Dyche's Everton attack.

'Want Herath throughout my career' – Chandimal

Sri Lanka captain “over the moon” after pulling off Abu Dhabi heist

The last time Sri Lanka won an away Test against a side ranked higher than them was in June 2014, so long ago not just in years but in what has passed in between, that it really was – as the past is said to be – another country. This last year in particular has been rotten in so many ways, so it was no surprise that a beaming Dinesh Chandimal, still green as a captain, pronounced himself “over the moon” after a magical, against-the-odds win in Abu Dhabi.Chandimal’s epic, first-innings 155 played a major part in the 21-run win over Pakistan, as did his marshaling of his attack and team on a tense final afternoon. In the process Sri Lanka became the first visiting side to win a Test at Zayed stadium. After a thorough drubbing at home by India, there couldn’t have been a sweeter – and more important – result.”The guys gave hard work before the match started, and finally that hard work paid off,” Chandimal said. “As a team, we were below par in our performances [against India], but we have waited for this win and finally we got it. Credit goes to all the players.”They played some really good cricket and I’m sure this can continue throughout the series. We did more work on our fitness and fielding, and discipline. Everyone put their heart and soul into the practices, and the management put lots of hard work in.”A Sri Lanka win was a distant prospect when the final day began – tottering, effectively, on 66 for 4. They had seemed dazed on the fourth afternoon and nothing from their work over the previous months suggested they could recover. But they knew, with Rangana Herath in their attack and Pakistan against him, they needed desperately to put together any score upwards of three-figures to give themselves a chance.”It was a tough time, especially last evening,” Chandimal said. “We were surprised to be four down for 40, or 35. We were surprised, but we thought before play started today that 160-plus would be a winning total.”[Niroshan] Dickwella was outstanding in the second innings to get us to the 140 mark. We all knew the legend Rangana would come into play, and finally he did his best.”That the legend – or “wily old fox” as Chandimal also called him – did. A six-wicket haul, and 11 for the match, included all manner of landmarks – the last was his 400th Test wicket and the penultimate, his 100th against Pakistan.Asked how long he would like Herath to play in his side, given he is nearing 40, Chandimal made a little wish. “I just want him throughout my career.”I have no idea how long he is going to play, but I am sure he will do what he can for the team. Rangana is a team man. He is supportive to me and the players, with what he has learnt from cricket. Every young player goes to talk to him about his bowling and experiences.”

Rangers Eye Move For "Different Level" Goldson Heir

Glasgow Rangers secured qualification through to the Champions League playoff round, however, it wasn’t a performance which will inspire much hope for the future.

Michael Beale’s side laboured during the 1-1 draw against Servette and repeating last year's aggregate win over PSV Eindhoven looks like a daunting task.

With a mixed start to their 2023/24 Premiership campaign, the Gers need to click into gear as soon as possible and Beale will be aiming to bring in another player or two before the transfer window shuts.

With this in mind, the manager is currently showing interest in a young talent who is shining South of the border…

Who else could Rangers sign?

The Light Blues have been linked with a few defenders as of late, with Harry Souttar and Jake Cooper being touted for potential moves to Scotland.

A new name has emerged recently.

According to Football Scotland, Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards is being eyed by the Gers for a potential swoop before the end of the transfer window.

Premier League outfits West Ham United and Crystal Palace are also keen on securing his services, but with group-stage Champions League football a possibility, this could be all the incentive that he needs to move to Glasgow.

The League One side failed to reach the Championship after playoff semi-final heartbreak last term and this could suggest they would be open to selling Edwards in the next couple of weeks.

Could Ronnie Edwards improve Rangers?

Rangers have seen various players arrive this summer to bolster the midfield and attacking areas, yet just two defenders have arrived.

Dujon Sterling is still developing and isn’t expected to be a starter this term, while Leon Balogun, albeit experienced, isn’t the long-term option Beale requires.

Connor Goldson won't be around forever and Edwards could be the ideal heir for the former Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back.

Having made 264 appearances since arriving at the club in 2018, Goldson has become a mainstay in the heart of the defence, helping the club win a Premiership title and the Scottish Cup in the process.

Peterborough's Ronnie Edwards

Last season, the 30-year-old ranked as the best centre-back in the squad with regard to Sofascore rating, while also making more tackles and clearances per game when compared to the rest of the central defenders, showing how vital he is in the starting XI.

Edwards, while just 20 years of age, has shown immense promise and has been praised by Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony, who said:

"Ronnie is playing at a different level right now and if he goes we will have to decide whether to replace him with a powerful centre-back or with another ball-playing one which will be a decision for the manager."

The young sensation ranked fifth across the Posh squad last term for overall Sofascore rating while also ranking fourth for tackles and second for interceptions and clearances per game, indicating that is already having a positive influence on the team despite his tender years.

Having already amassed 91 senior appearances across both the Championship and League One, there is no doubt he is ready for a step up.

Could he become the perfect long-term heir for Goldson should he join Rangers? Only time will tell.

136 wides in U-19 match underline gap in women's cricket structure

The high number of extras came during an U-19 Women’s North East Championship, the first time the six north-eastern states of India were cleared to participate in the BCCI’s U-19 competition

Shashank Kishore02-Nov-2017As many as 136 wides were conceded in the match between Nagaland and Manipur on the opening day of the BCCI’s Under-19 Women’s North East Championship in Dhanbad on Wednesday. Manipur bowled 94 wides in an extras column that read 112, while Nagaland, a shade better, conceded 42 out of 45 extras in the form of wides. For the record, Nagaland, who were bowled out for 215 in 38 overs, won by 117 runs, with only two batsmen crossing double digits – Muskhan and Pori made 54 and 24 respectively. Manipur were bowled out for 98 in 27.3 overs, with Ronibala Thockhom’s 62-ball 24 being the highest. An official who was present at the match said both teams struggled to bowl on one bounce to the batsmen. “Forget about being accurate, balls were barely reaching the other end as well, which raises questions about the preparedness,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “The gap in standards between the top sides and the rest is huge in women’s cricket. Even at training, you could see coaches working their level best at their bowling and fielding drills. You can’t question them for effort, they were trying hard.”This is the first time six north-eastern states – Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim – have been cleared to participate in the BCCI’s Under-19 women’s tournament, through the addition of a new tournament specifically for the north-east sides and Bihar. This follows a clearance from the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators as part of a move to integrate the sides into the BCCI set-up. Mizoram, however, will not field a team for the tournament due to paperwork issues regarding their affiliation. The addition of the North East zone takes the total number of zonal sides to six – North, South, East, West and Central being the others. The top two sides from each zone qualify for the Super League, with top two sides from each pool of four qualifying for the semi-finals.Mamta Maben, the former India women captain, who coaches at the age-group level, felt the structure had to be strengthened before talks of a robust T20 league on the lines of the Women’s Big Bash League and the Super League came into the picture.”Some teams down south are very competitive, but if you look at the overall picture, there’s still some way to go,” she said. “North East sides have to be given more time. Changes will not happen overnight. They’re just coming into the system now, so to get to the standards of the top teams will need lot of investment and time. Which is why, I don’t think we can aspire for an eight-team T20 league any time soon. Maybe three or four is the most, with foreign players coming in. We’ll be diluting the system if we try and look to make up the numbers.”The Board also officially included a North East zone in the domestic calendar for this year’s men’s U-16 Vinoo Mankad Trophy and the U-23 CK Nayudu Trophy. In 2016-17, the BCCI had instituted a combined associate and affiliate side for Under-19 Vinoo Mankad (inter-state 50-over) Trophy following a selection tournament.

CSA, SACA agree on player payout deal for GLT20

CSA and the SACA have agreed on a 60% payout deal for South African players and a 50% payment to foreign players following the postponement of the T20 Global League

Firdose Moonda05-Dec-2017

T20 Global League

Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) have agreed on a 60% payout deal for South African players and a 50% payment to foreign players following the postponement of the T20 Global League, ESPNcricinfo has learned. The payments will be made in three installments between December 2017 and April 2018.CSA and SACA described the agreement as “amicable,” with acting CSA CEO Thabang Moroe underlining the importance of his organisation maintaining solid relationships with its players. “Our players are key stakeholders in the game and are also CSA’s most valuable assets, which is why we invest heavily in our development programmes to produce our best possible national side,” he said.A payout is particularly important to the players, especially the locally based South African players who were expecting bigger pay-days than ever before, but those dreams were dashed when the tournament was pushed back to 2018. CSA is currently in the process of working on the organisation of next year’s edition but as things stand, the board has yet to secure a broadcaster, which was the major reason the inaugural edition could not take place. The T20 Global League was due to be played in November-December and CSA had anticipated losses of US$ 25million – amounting to half its cash reserves. The financial model was eventually deemed unsustainable and CSA opted to cut its losses, which will still prove substantial. The total player bill, which included signed contracts with 138 players (after six withdrew for injury or unavailability reasons), amounted to US $10.8 million. While CSA has been spared sacrificing the full amount, the agreed figures will still cost the board several million, though the exact amount has been adjusted to accommodate for foreign players. Those who signed on with other leagues, such as the BPL, whose NOCs contained limitations on the amount of time they were able to play in the T20 Global League, and those who did not receive NOCs will all be paid less than 50%.Negotiations have been taking place since late October and the matter was resolved in mediation. “The settlement is both fair and responsible and has been well received by the players,” Tony Irish, SACA CEO, said. Irish had previously noted that though players were disappointed about the money they would lose with the tournament being postponed, they were also mindful of not getting into greater financial distress.Though CSA has cash reserves of over R500 million (approx US$ 37million), the T20 Global League has depleted them severely. CSA has already spent R350 million in stadium upgrades over three years and had designated another R100 million to the organisation and marketing of the GLT20.
